I started surfing around 2 months ago, and at 46 years old I question why I didn't start earlier. I feel so much more connected to the ocean and myself when I'm out there. Thanks for this video.
I just started, at 38 years old and kept asking myself the same question. A local SD surfer legend and friend recently said: you will always wish you started earlier, but you will never be as young as today. 🏄♂️ Go surfing!
As someone who’s been surfing for 15 years, it’s actually very impressive how quickly he picked it up, catching waves on his own, and even going down the line. Most people do not get close to that stage in 4 days.
Four years ago, I decided to learn surfing, i would say rather say it happened along the way. After a week or so, I managed to stand on the board and catch small waves. But there was one day that stood out. Despite many falls and tumbles in the waves, I found myself riding them at least ten times. It was pure joy, and I couldn't stop smiling all day long. And believe it or not, I had never even seen the ocean before that day-I was 28! Watching your surfing journey, Tim, brought all these memories flooding back, and I couldn't help but chuckle and smile along with your adventures with wonderful joyful people. Thank you for sharing such a heartwarming video it's inspired me to revisit those cherished memories once more.
He's spot on that the actual surfing is the easy part. Reading the ocean and swells and positioning yourself is the hard part. It actually does take years for that part before you can surf different spots and adapt.
The fundamentals start with fun,you did awesome. I met Laird and surfed that same place you had your day 4 challenge. A magical experience! Well done sir
The way Laird Hamilton explains the concepts and articulates his ideas so seamlessly shows how much experience he's accumulated and why he was a world champion
Cool video! I finally realised my dream of learning to surf at the age of 40. While it's probably been the most challenging thing I have ever done, at the same time it is the most joyful, beautiful and spiritual thing I've experienced too. The feeling of riding a wave is indescribable and I'm only catching baby green waves at this stage! So cool, I hope you get to keep it up.
I took my first lesson after my birthday. I was walking down a pier in the afternoon over last summer and I saw people surfing. I though , that looks fun! I booked my 1st lesson the following weekend and ever since then I’ve been taking a he lesson twice a month. I am 2 1/2 hr from the beach. It’s been challenging specially on the winter. But I love it! I am impress how quickly you got it! I hope you continue doing it.
....how inspiring and what supporting wonderful coaches.....go on, go out and protect the ocean. Started doing the same @50+. The watermen are right....age is just a common excuse. Thx to the entire crew.
Wonderful, brother, im 40 and starting and its one of the most beautiful and challenging things ive ever done, for 5 days you did amazing, couple of tips that helped me a lot: 1.- Where you see is where you go. 2.- Dont change your board unless you dominate 100% the board you have. 3.- Practice the pop ups on land, but nothing beats the practice in the water, just go surfing. :)
Great challenge, well done. You got up on the SUP in ocean chop very quickly, showed me you’d pick it up quick. Awesome mentors there. Enjoy the stoke.
Surfing is partly an art form or like martial arts. Repetition is key. Like playing an instrument repeat, repeat, repeat. Eventually when your not thinking it comes to you... Feel it and have fun.
Love this format Tim! And really good work on picking up the surfing. I've been struggling with it myself for a couple years with very few opportunities and lots of time in between. This boot camp style is probably the way to go :)
yea the popup was impressive, a big blocker for people learning to surf is they just don't have the hip flexibility, especially if you've been deskbound for a long time. well done tim tim.
Tim - huge fan of your podcast! Thing is laird is almost 60 so I believe this may be from a bit ago (?). But this looks really good for never surfing, but I imagine you have done it before. It will be very hard to advance in surfing if you live in Texas. I surf in SoCal all year so I’ll surf with you if you ever want to surf in la or oc. Also, anytime I take people out who’ve never done it they are usually exhausted after 30 minutes of paddling so you did very well.
the lazy uke music and the wipe outs on the paddle board🤣🤣 it reminded me of my own falls the other day. Every wipeout you're learning what not to do and you're also learning that the discomfort of eating shit is not so bad. What Tim said, "feel more, think less" is what works, you just gotta feel it take you and trust in yourself. Happy surfing!
Incredible work Tim! It's so much harder to learn than it looks. Watching others via video makes it look real easy. It took me 3 weeks of going out every single day before I could even stand up on a wave 😢. (Though that was a short board and no help) It would be another 4 months before I finally experienced riding on the face of the wave and getting the sublime feeling you mentioned (that was kinda lucky too. Right place / right time). I felt I was pretty athletic, knew how to skateboard to some extend and snowboard. It's quite the learning curve and I'm still learning each time I go out. I felt the hardest part of surfing is not the actual surfing.. Most of the time you're just waiting. . Unlike snowboarding where you just get off the lift and go. Then paddling for a wave when 4-5+ others are going for it. Really diminishes the amount of waves you actually get. And where I learned to surf and I imagine many other places people who actually know how to surf aren't super enthusiastic for a beginner to come and then not catch a wave.
Besides drugs, surfing is the only thing that really brought me into a state of mind where life feels exciting and good. The rush and being stoked after riding a good wave, the humbled thankfulness after nearly drowning, the weird sense of being on your own but not alone when sitting out there with friends...
Best sport to lose weight, and most fun sport so far. 45 y old. Went from 109 to 94 kg in 4 weeks with 10 days "surfing", i.e. paddling and swimming back to my board. I couldn't really understand my Mexican "teacher", the local fisherman. Was in some bigger waves, trying not to drown, liked it.
When I learned to downhill ski eons and eons ago, I remember that is exactly what my instructor, ski pro taught me. You have to work the mountain and it doesn’t matter at what the altitude you are. If you’re skiing the bunny hill or the mountain top when you get off a gondola. If it’s an easy run or a double black diamond. You work the mountain make sure your skis are tuned up sharpened and waxed for the conditions of the snow. -- I never forgot that, believe I had 3 or four classes. I remembered his words every time I felt the run was challenging. I skied within my skill level and gradually took tougher runs. I cannot ski anymore (I’ve done X- country as well as water skied ) I have wicked osteoarthritis and waiting new hips and knees. I also have a rheumatoid issue that affects my low back/spine and I don’t have a death wish not that way, could be very painful. 🤣
The fuck it does! What part of surfing is the same as being ripped up by a 8m screamer halfway to base and then spat out the back so hard your wing gets thrown beneath you and end up in a cascade of collapses that puts you into your wing or even more fun everythings perfectly find coming into land 50m agl and wind changes direction and a dusty forms and you get slung around like a cat holding onto a ceiling fan. Im only 20 years into my surfing probably chewed thru a dozen boards before i got a nice quiver of js barons even in double overheads 15ft swell etc that ive encountered all i gotto do to survive is dive deep beneath the wave. Its nice and tranquil i calm down instincively when im being held down for ahwhile and the actual rideing of the wave is just enjoyable. Tim ferris if your reading this. People can will and do die just learning to paraglide. In no other sport do i see my friends almost always anyone who is at a world cup level they get into a little adventuresque vol biv sort of expedition after a few seasons of that they end up paralysed or dead. You can see waves. You cant see the air. We can see a fair bit of the air under certain conditions but if youve been airborne for 11 hours shits gonna get squirrelly
Body surfing technique shown in the video of using one arm and the side of your body is the same technique you use for body dragging behind a kite when attempting to go upwind with your body when you fell off your board.
3:29 You have a mistake here. German big wave surfer Sebastian Steudtner has surfed the possibly biggest wave ever measured at 28.57 meters (93.73ft) in Nazaré, Portugal.
Laird is still looking good, this must have been filmed a long time ago. he is still one intense dude. That would be an honour man. you ,must have done a bit of surfing before or your arms would be like noodles by the second day
Its spectacular made video , makes me spend my time and enjoy it , but i feel i didn't get much value, almost nothing about how did you overome your mistakes what techniques
If your in shape you can almost learn to be a beginner level fast. The more out of shape you are the longer it takes or maybe even never learn if you are way out of shape.
Welcome home Tim. Titus if you see this... thanks for the gracious hospitality at your house for your record release party. Laird... thnx for the sushi!

Totally relate! I started a year ago aged 40 and it just feels incredible. Universe never aligned before now.
I have a friend who’s really good . Im 44 , I never done this ever. And looks like I’m going to start. Let’s see.
I just started, at 38 years old and kept asking myself the same question. A local SD surfer legend and friend recently said: you will always wish you started earlier, but you will never be as young as today. 🏄♂️
Go surfing!
@@dennycushing6576 thats right - so whatever skill level you are paddle out and have a shot a mavericks 😂
I just started at 35. Wish I had done it sooner. It's altered my brain chemistry hahaha.

or even 400 days!
What prior things he had down, helped him? Maybe people can do some pre prep?
i did it in 1 day, and on my own (why yes thank you, where's my medal?)
@@AX-fx7ngsurf skating for sure
Not really - It is good, but 5 days with pros helping and on a long board. Do that with a shortboard in 5 days then yes.

Inspirational. My young son has had a couple lessons & I have recently bought a longboard to surf with him at the age of 50+. Great video Tim.
Laird is a beast in every sense
As a lifelong surfer I am so impressed! Amazing! Great job
....how inspiring and what supporting wonderful coaches.....go on, go out and protect the ocean. Started doing the same @50+. The watermen are right....age is just a common excuse. Thx to the entire crew.
Wow! That’s impressive, I’ve seen people struggle for a long ass time to get to that point! I hope you kept on surfing Tim!
this video is underrated. Very well put together

Pretty solid for a few days!

Welcome to the lineup Tim. I just gave my 8-year-old daughter her first board. It's the gift of a lifetime. See ya out there!
Now you’re hooked! Congrats! 🎉
Tim you need to fly a paraglider . Surfing and paragliding have the same incredible spiritual feeling

Tldr you can EASILY die every single flight. Ive had maybe 3 close calls surfing out of thousands of sessions
I've been surfing for 7 years and my progression would have been faster if I started with a longboard, not a high-performance shortboard lol
Noted
Kamalei is a G. Veteran of the surfing world for this generation. True warrior of the Aina 💪🏼
nice! Learning from King Poseidon himself ,,, duuuude not bad. Very Cool.
That was dope thanks Tim !
Wow, what an amazing crew!
Tim, after 15 years great video! 😊
Thank you! This was amazing!
It’s actually amazing how fast you picked it up
Very impressive and inspiring! You're cool, dude!
i enjoy the effort that he puts in maybe he should continue to surf
That level 10 gyat at 10:02 is crazy
You did amazing. Proud
thtas truly extraordinary to be able to do that after just four days surfing - even with those teachers
Look at that smile at end! The stoke is real :)
Body surfing technique shown in the video of using one arm and the side of your body is the same technique you use for body dragging behind a kite when attempting to go upwind with your body when you fell off your board.
Nice. I did about the same actually. What you'll find out next is that to become actually good is an order of magnitude harder. Try going to a lineup.
More of surfing Tim please!
Amazing vid🎉🎉🎉
Good work Tim!
lucky guy ... kook got the dream team...
I loved the Jane Fonda workout reference 😂 incredible documentary here ❤
NIce video man! very inspiring
Amazing progress!

Great video. Thanks for sharing
What is the beach?

Do you think you will continue?
Thanks Tim!!!!
This is insanely impressive, especially considering he started in Hawaii with such hardcore waves!
no soft board?
Love this!
my bucket list
I started when I was 4 so I don't remember how long it took me but all the things he told you surfers definetly do
You're a natural.
Awesome!!
I can't find the long videos
Its spectacular made video , makes me spend my time and enjoy it , but i feel i didn't get much value, almost nothing about how did you overome your mistakes what techniques
Laird is awesome!
Love it!
Awesome!
Hope to visit Kauai again one day.
If I had a dollar for ever time I said “that’s perfect your gonna be a natural” while giving pre surf warmups I’d be a rich man😅
Very enjoyable video
He’s got the bug now!!
If your in shape you can almost learn to be a beginner level fast. The more out of shape you are the longer it takes or maybe even never learn if you are way out of shape.
Sharks 🦈- I can’t 😂
Surfing in San Francisco is an entirely different ballgame. Wonder how that went for him?
Hi Tim! First comment… 🤩
Why not on 4 days?
Welcome home Tim. Titus if you see this... thanks for the gracious hospitality at your house for your record release party. Laird... thnx for the sushi!

Gooood
How can I get Laird to coach me?! 😅
Im watching this from long island and im learning how to surf
Amazing
when it said biggest wave ever i was waiting for ‘maks from sickos, nazare’ 😂 if you know, you know

How to quickly learn to DJ!!
"Hes so haole he doesnt even know hes haole."
LMAO
