    You've installed the plugs incorrectly - the raised rim around the top of the plug is to stop the resin pouring into the tab insert and screw hole, and should be sanded off.

    If you used a marker that was close to the boards color on he top 1/2 inch the resin would show that color through.

    I know the sea. I know how tricky she can be but even so, one day my 1.5 year old nearly washed away in the sea. She (the sea) was calm, she was not pulling but took us by surprise. I was knee deep carrying my kid when suddenly a very normal wave pulled me down and the child fell.That wave had a massive understream. Very lucky she (the child) was grabbed by a man. After that the rescuers called everybody out and raised the red flag. Just saying how tricky she can be and how fast she can change from friendly to a monster. And than there's people who think she will not harm them?! I call that acting by stupidity. Me too I like nothing more than a nice walk in a storm by the sea. But at a safe distance! People really have to be aware she can be very tricky, they risk their life for a bit of sensation. No, the sea is not to play with.

    This is quite interesting, but you could have done it a little differently and saved work for yourself 1. The 2 lugs on the insert are not supposed to go into the board they are just for alignment and get sanded off 2. If you don't have a router you can start the hole and then just remove the drill bit once you have gone through the deck. The drill bit is just to get you started and stops the hole saw skating around the surface of the deck. Apart from that it serves little purpose Hope that helps

    You have to sand down the 2mm plus (guides) on the plug to get a good hold on the camera mount. Just google Rahotu200 how to install a gopro tail mount on a surfboard video. This gives a better camera angle looking forward.

    The reason it fell out is because GoPro attachment wasn't getting put in deep enough for the screw to engage because the top of the plug wasn't sanded down. You're not supposed to drill those little holes for the tabs. They sit on the surface of the fiberglass and make sure the plug is set at the right depth. Once the plug is glued in with the resin you sand down the top of the plug until it is flush with the rest of the board (when the little tabs disappear you know you've sanded far enough).

    Hi mate, thanks for your comments, and your contribution:-) it's good to get some visual help to go with the other comments. I'll try that method on my next board, for sure. You definitely got rinsed for the plug though, 8 bucks!! ;-) Regards, Rich

    Thanks so much for posting and taking out your time to do help people. I found a link to the original FCS guidelines for installing the plugs. It looks like the the plastic arms are def supposed to stay on top and then be ground down. fcs suggest 2mm below the plug to be filled with resin

    @blakus81 Hi mate, sorry to hear you lost your cam, my friend and I have lost 3 between us. Two of them were whilst using the 3m adhesive pads. The one we lost whilst using the fin plug only came out after smacking me on the head during a wipeout. We've managed to use 2 HD cams for the last year with no problems. The sanding down of the fin plug seems a bit much. Is this what shapers do when making their boards? Regards, Crouchy

    some one please show this guy how to place a FCS plug on a board. First you need the right tools. Second you should place the plug on the stringer, for strength. Thats why leash plugs are placed on the stringer rather then the side of it., But thanks for the afford to help anyways.

  • @wavrydrsurfgear

    Go pro now make a floating device that attaches to the camera. Trust me, they sink fast. Use a forstner bit to drill the hole, it will take you 30 secs. The black tabs sit on the deck and are sanded off when your resin dries.

    You can use a router attachment to make a nice clean hole in about 10 seconds. This avoids poking a whole in the bottom . LOL. There are lots of comments about how to put the plug in correctly that you were unaware of. Folks should be aware that certain types of resin need to be measured and mixed accurately or they turn in to goos that are really hard to get out of the surfboard. Personally I would mix my own epoxy putty instead of using strait resin.

    @crouchy2702 it's what i was thinking. if u're not sanding the lip of the plug the screw can't hold well the fin attachment for GoPro. I'm not an expert either just a novice on shaping surfboards. Try to put a mini leash plug near the fin plug like this u'll never lose the camera. Good idea to do the video like this we can improve our inventions. Cheers

  • @crouchy2702
    @crouchy2702 13 років тому

    @IGcolin Hi there, thanks for your comments :-) We made the holes for the lugs just to keep the plug flush with the board. We felt it looked tidier, that's all. The plug didn't get ripped out when we lost the cam. It was the attachment that GoPro provide that's held in by the fcs grub screw that came out. We're no experts at this; we were looking on youtube for help in doing it, but found nothing. Once we'd done a couple of our older boards, we decided to film one to give others some idea.

  • @IGcolin

    @crouchy2702 why did u do those lil holes? the small plastic "things" are just to have the plug on the fiber glass level. u lost the cam coz of the lil lip of the plug, the screw didn't catch it good . i'm building a surfboard now and i was thinking same as sandford6016 but instead of a normal leash plug to put a mini one. good video by the way (sorry my bad english explanation)

    @crouchy2702 No expert here either - if it weren’t for your video, I probably would have installed them upside down!! LOL … but then I wondered how to keep resin from getting into the plug and also why the GoPro mount was not going in deep enough. So I did some digging and found the install guide from FCS themselves.

    @tribalsurfers Hi there, thanks for the feedback; we're by no means experts at this, we just had a crack at it on a couple of older boards first to see how it worked. We'll definitely try your method for the next one. Rich.

  • @tribalsurfers
    @tribalsurfers 13 років тому

    Thanks for taking the time to do this video ... but I think the little arms are not meant to be flush with the deck. They are supposed to be guides that hang over the deck to suspend the FCS plug in the hole. Once the resin has set, you shave off the little arms and the lip around the top of the plug (which is meant to keep resin from getting in in the first place).

    If you used a router, or even a router attachment on your dremel, you wouldn't have had to drill all the way thru the board.

    @sandford6016 Thanks for the comments:-) That's a good idea with the leash plug for extra cover. We have still managed to lose a camera even with the fin plug system. It got ripped out during a wipeout... after colliding with my head! It then sunk like a stone:-/ Still what's a couple of hundred quid on a new Camera?!?!

  • @sandford6016
    @sandford6016 13 років тому

    Thanks man, just done mine! The only difference I did was add a leash plug next to it so the camera has an additional anchor point.
