An Overlanding Role Model: Caroline Van Stralen

Fieldcraft Survival’s Mike Glover is joined by the eldest child of the family behind Epic Family Road Trip, Caroline Van Stralen. Growing up in the overlanding life has afforded Caroline a unique perspective and opportunity to be a different kind of role model for today’s youth.
“The fact that doing what we do can kind of give back to people in some way and especially, for me, to other young women; it's amazing,” she says.
Caroline has been on the road with her family for the past seven years and says she learned so much more by doing things for real with real stakes than she ever could have by just reading and training.
“I would have never imagined getting into [this lifestyle] before we started. Before I always longed for the something that would get me out of my comfort zone because I didn't really like change or doing things that were scary, even though I loved the idea of it,” she said. “I looked up to different explorers my whole life; I read books about them and I loved the idea of doing that. But I was always held back by that uncertainty or that fear of actually going out and doing it. So, kind of getting thrown into it and just doing it was an amazing opportunity and I think the best learning experience possible; getting out of my comfort zone is a continual thing that I'm continually having to do all the time.”
