    The Dead is an excellent Rx for low mood, a go to for me at times. I have steal your face skull tatt on the top of my foot. A reminder to be grateful, even when you're tired and broken with words half spoken and thoughts unclear.

    This is really, really great. Vocals are pretty much beyond amazing from a singer without microphone, just a dude with an acoustic guitar. This guitar work is completely ad-hoc but entirely perfect, the vocals are stunning. I love this song and Ryan Adams just absolutely kills it. This guy loves this song as much as I do and it shows. If this guy would ever join dead and CO I would really appreciate it.

    This is Dead cover to end all Dead covers. This song is a deep Dead cut and tho Ryan recorded Cold Roses very much influenced by the Dead he has never described himself as a Deadhead. This version focuses more on the lyrical content with a compelling melody as a backdrop keeping you in. So many Dead fans are so instrumental focused they overlook the poetry. One of my oldest friends who loves the Dead way more than I do couldn't believe that Wharf Rat was my favorite. He cited Terrapin Station as the most profound Dead song lyrically. He had to think for a minute to even remember Wharf Rat. I do like Terrapin Station, but Wharf Rat makes you pity, empathize, and relate to the sad tramp/bum telling his mistakes and misfortunes. Then, along with young man character listening to the bum, you realize that your lives aren't that different. Well I sure did ramble. To sum it all up: I love this song and I love this version almost as much as the original.

      I love the lyrics to many Dead songs...I would argue that in many of my favorites the lyrics are just as important as the guitar & the different jams that were done with that song.

    • @andyferguson6474
      @andyferguson6474 5 років тому +1

      There are many ways to listen to these lyrics.
      1) The lyrics were written by Robert Hunter but sung by Jerry and it is the story of the old man as told in a first person voice through the narrator (the young man). So, it's like peeling an onion to determine whose words they are - when really they are the words of anyone who has battled addiction.
      2) the badass vulnerability and bravery of Jerry Garcia, the overweight junkie butt of so many jokes, to sing "I know that the life I'm living's no good" on stage.
      3) the contradictions of the old man's stories. The Dead (and I include Hunter here) never let anyone off the hook and they loved to expose the contradictions in all of our lives. Some examples of the old man's contradictions:
      A) August West loves his girlfriend (Pearly Baker) more than his wife and yet, as he tells his story, he blames his downfall on the fact that his girlfriend believed the negative people in his life who said he would come to no good ("Pearly believed them").
      B) He claims that the Lord was never a friend of his ("more than my maker, though he's no friend of mine") but also claims he will turn his life around if the Lord makes it happen ("but I'lll get back on my feet, some day, the good Lord willing, if he says I may").
      I also love how the song transitions from a folk/rock song to gospel.

    It makes perfect sense that the Dead's music resonates with Adams as much as it does. Garcia may be one of the most underrated rock n roll singers of all time and Robert Hunter one of the most underrated song writers of all time. Adams too exists on the periphery of all things mainstream music.

    • @MrFartboy79
      @MrFartboy79 7 років тому

      Yes! Agree on all fronts... but, and just to be fair to ole' Jerry, Hunter wrote the words, Jerry actually wrote the music... at least that is how it's always been put. Hunter is himself a musician but how much input he'd have on the melodies I'm not sure. If I had to guess each song was probably written differently but by and large Jerry probably handled the musical melody and Hunter the words with the lyrical melody in mind.

      I wonder how op feels about his comment 7yrs later after the D n C uprising bringing attention to Jerry n Robert to millions of new people via John Mayer. I don't think Jerry's ever been underrated personally, Hunter just gets overlooked because primarily hes just a songwriter. I know he performs but I think I might have made my point lol.✌

    I just heard Ryan sing Magnolia Mountain last night and thought it was a great tip of the hat to Jerry.
    I always felt this was one of the deeper Grateful Dead tunes that told a clear and compelling story. I don't know what this meant to Jerry but I know it touched him deeply - at one show he actually broke down during the bridge ("The good Lord willing...") and it didn't look like he was going to be able to finish the song. He took a moment, pulled himself together and sang the rest - it was quite a powerful moment.

      My best advice to really get into some great Ryan Adams music is check out the site called archive.org and check out some live shows from Ryan Adams and the Cardinals 2006-2007. they are excellent soundboard quality and that was a period where he was really channeling the Grateful Dead. Some of my favorite and most listened to music are those shows

    Very Good by Ryan Adams. If you've seen & heard Garcia & The Grateful Dead perform Wharf Rat in the early 1970's when they'd kind of perfected it, well then you'd probably agree with me that it was mystic at times. In my opinion 1970 to 1981 was the Grateful Dead heyday.
