Man that version of Midway Park is incredible. It makes me so nostalgic for this time of my life. Just very very lucky to have experienced seeing them and many others live.
Seven new albums in the last year and a sold out tour says that his career is recovering just fine from those false accusations. He got sober too so he really is on the road to recovery.
This guy somehow warranted inheriting my portfolio or running into the source of it, Barbara Way: I don’t have the story yet because they all disappeared from my sphere with the academy award nomination for a sound track for The Horse Whisperer..a storyline I wrote.
First off, I am glad that someone filmed this concert even if it was done on a crude videocam by the standards of 2022 that was not plugged into the soundboard. The pure raw, drunk, high young energy of everyone, Ryan, the band and the audience in some divey place where bands did their thing. This is rock and roll at its best. Just a bunch of very talented kids getting together to jam it out and kick some ass. The world seemed then to be a fucked up place but compared to now, there was still some hope left that pure rock and roll could still save us. Godamn this is some good fucking shit!! Sure as fuck wished I had been there on that night, but at least it got recorded.
Ryan and Phil really had an amazing chemistry even though the two couldn't stand each other. They made their best music while Phil was still in the band. If they could have just recognized what a special thing they had and kept it together longer..
the guy dancing is Beatle Bob! beautiful human who was from the midwest i think , but seemed to be everywhere. he would ask bands if he could come onstage and dance. i feel like he joined us onstage everywhere from tennessee to oregon. not sure if he’s still with us…
Once again I have to thank you for posting. I've been watching this one for quite some time now so this is long overdue. It's one of the few Whiskeytown live shows that I'm aware of and a real treat. Thanks again. xx
Lesley - all that chaos for a few minutes...........and then BANG - they rip into that opening number and KICK SOME ASS! Just an awesome sight and sound - and Ryan all swagger and bursting with talent :) . A classic snapshot of the young Ryan and Whiskeytown at about the time of their first major label album..........Strangers Almanac of course.
@@neilfisher3375 Yep, it's very enjoyable and I love Strangers Almanac. Probably one of the few Whiskeytown shows where nothing dramatic happened! At least not on stage!
@@mapatterson22 Ha ha - you may be right! Had the privilege of seeing Whiskeytown open for John Fogerty back in the last century. Never heard of them at that point. Front row. Could see up Caitlin's dress and Ryan's nose. His nose was a mess and he was pretty messed up. They started weak and out of tune. By the third song, they hit a connective groove and tore the place up. A fan since then. Shame they split up. Too young, too much talent and it might be safe to say too many drugs. Either way, they left their mark. If Ryan would've started out in the early 70's, he'd have been as big as anybody from that era.
tylerclaird I just meant he’d have been Elton John/David Bowie huge. He isn’t on that level. Especially now in light of the latest stories circulating. He is and always will be an incredible talent. I saw him before he was “RYAN ADAMS”. In spite of his F’ed up start, you just knew that he was a special talent.
Stormbringer Coming very true. He definitely nailed down that seventies California rock sound. Shame that his career took a huge Left turn in the last year or two.
richard martinez I don’t condone some of the things that he’s being accused of, but we canonize certain rock icons of the past for the same behavior or much worse. Strange days indeed.

April 1997, this had to be Ryan's absolute worst concert ever. He's amazing as always but there could not have been a sound check because he would have said, hell no, people let's get this right, first of all. It doesn't do any good to get it at right, then go on stage and no one can hear your voice while you song.

I saw Whiskeytown at least 20 times. Got to know Ryan. Saw the ACL taping at his invitation. I agree....this was the best Midway Park.
If that singer keeps it up, he might be something special someday...

Moved to Raleigh in '82. Great music scene birthing. These guys and The Connells were great local talents.
Wow Ryan at his best, this means so much to me, this era of Ryan brings so many great memories ❤️♥️
This was only just seconds prior to Adam’s acquiring from my portfolio almost the entirety of his careers’ storyline..this was the real Ryan Adam’s..

Ryan Adams. GOAT. No contest.
Love this band! Saw them at the Fillmore in San Francisco in 98 and Ryan Adams hit house security guard with his guitar and full-on brawl broke out!
Beautiful! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Ryan and Phil really had an amazing chemistry even though the two couldn't stand each other. They made their best music while Phil was still in the band. If they could have just recognized what a special thing they had and kept it together longer..
I'm "friends" with Phil on Facebook, and he still talks shit on Ryan. 🤣
THAT GUY RANDOMLY DANCING LOL
And Ryan was definitely halfway drunk but still a damn fine show.
Awesome footage. Watched it several times and they are really in top form. Feisty young Ryan. Hope they reunite someday.
Considering that the Cardinals couldn't even make it through an entire tour I doubt he is capable of performing with any band.
That Would Be Awesome!

Bob danced for my band in Dewey Beach, DE of all places.
Not sure what’s better - the performance or the background bar chatter of the lucky people who saw this live.
had no idea Whiskeytown rocked so hard. Now I Wanna Be Your Dog was an inspired cover.
It’s unbelievable!
Oh wow, found this by accident. What a wonderful set. WT certainly rocked harder than I imagined,
Saw them in Ann Arbor in November that year. By that time they had Jenni on bass and Ed from Ohio on guitar. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
Wow, history, 20 years ago, cheers for this dude!
I think a Whiskeytown reunion may be a nice way to hit the stage again or maybe a secondary role in a band like Mayer is doing in The Dead.
Great era for Ryan
Almost 30 years later. Utterly astonishing.

Wow,I just found this!
This is fantastic - thanks for posting. Sound is pretty good considering it must be from a vhs cassette.
Awesome footage rocking out fun!
This footage looks earlier than 04/97. I saw them in 02/97 in SLC. They all looked a lot older.
love it! anyone catch what his beef with the local reporter was? "[something or other] is not the reason we're in a rock n roll band"
broscosmoline I can only imagine that there was a review that compared them in some way to Uncle Tupelo, as they were from around those parts as well.
right - i couldn't make out what group or person he was referring to, but now that you mention UT it's clear - thx
the reporter clearly pegged him as Jay Farrars doppleganger
24:55 Did Phil just spit beer on Ryan?
Does anyone know about “Smoke Some Crack With Me”? I can’t find info on it anywhere 9:37
gyaaad this is how it was!
OMG...Beatle Bob!!!!!
I love youtube.
Goodness...Poor Ryan gets so hot and sweaty!!
In venues like that, it’s impossible not to. The lights make it dreadfully hot, plus the AC rarely works.
There was another band that was even better at that time: "The Starkweathers"

Who is the girl singing backup with Caitlin at 17:22?
She mentioned the band after 16 Days.
Tonya Lamm from the band Hazeldine
Lol is Caitlyn really smoking a cigarette on stage? God the fucking 90's
Why is Rosanne Barr working the house sound board?
I often wonder why Ryan never had a metal band? Maybe he did when he was in high school?
J Ward he played in a shit ton of punk bands in highschool he also released an album called Orion which is metal and punk idk. Give it a listen
Patty Duke syndrome. They are on you tube
The empty mind is a terrible thing to waste
The version of Kiss And Make Up is way different from the recorded version
And a million times better
What is Mick Jagger doing there??!! 😂 (22:00)
It's the 1967 version of Doug Sahm. At least it's not that naked fat guy on acid from Altamont.
k, that mic was basically broken he's singing into here, lol. I mean, I know its the 90's but cmon

Jay Farrars Doppleganger
I was there the first time Ryan met Jay. Hero worship for sure
I was thinking the same thing, that's probably why RA got rid of them. Two of my cousins played in Son Volt- Drown era.
Where do I find these songs???

Same could be said for AC/DC and ZZ Top, but they still had careers that spanned decades and a devoted fan base just like Ryan.
