Power to weight is perfect. Middle Dwight bikes are the Goldilocks bikes. I love the looks. Some manufacturers are not afraid to try new styling. Most laypeople think all naked bikes are Harley’s. This bike does not look like a regular naked bike

I thought it looked a bit goofy but I went and looked at it in person and thought it actually looked pretty nice. It definitely makes the rider look awesome though and vice versa.
You want the SP the cruise control and suspension is totally worth the price difference and if you ever se it down the road it will be the one people actually want. It will retain its value better.
Can't wait for these to hit the states. Getting one as soon as I can. My local dealer wouldn't take a deposit since they didn't know when they will get one but I'll drive to another state if I have to. Rode the old MT09 on a short demo ride and fell in love. Can't wait to ride this thing!

Good review...I've got a '19 and won't be swapping but when I wear this one out I will be looking at a similar replacement. I hope Yamaha continues with an MT09 "sweet spot" bike.
Great, honest, usable info review. I think, SP especially, is a beautiful bike. Bang for the buck looks hard to beat. Always fun to listen to someone who knows bikes and how to ride them be genuinely impressed. All I can think of would be if I ride in a way to use or need cruise control, which I won't/don't, I'd get a Goldwing or car. However, no problem in paying extra for The SP even if I can't ride like Toad.
The SP looks better with this colour scheme but it still ain't pretty. I think it will look better with a bikini fairing or front screen fitted. Really interested to see how this compares to the 890R Duke, Triumph 765 Street Triple RS and the new Ducati Monster. All are around the same price and are close in weight etc. Hopefully a new XSR 900 will follow shortly as well. Ride safe.
I'm pretty sure it overall beats them all when you consider reliability, ride, suspension, quick shifter, cruise control, lift control, slide control, anti-lock brakes, and 3- cylinder motor.
@@jeffrt3893 That 890R is on a different level, but I’d definitely choose the Yamaha reliability. Have yet to ride a bike as exciting as that KTM. The Duke has everything you listed, expect it has a twin that produces more torque lower in the rev range, with top of the line parts at every turn. It’s the bike that’s making all the other manufacturers step their game up.

@@jeffrt3893 I agree the quick shifter comes locked is BS, but that’s the difference between a Japanese bike and one from Europe. Track pack is another “pay to play” with a feature already on the bike. Either way, until you’ve ridden an 890R, you have no idea what you’re missing. Yamaha has a better warranty as well, with KTM not covering most electronics, which, again, is bs.

yeah thats true. the bike is a beauty in real but ugly on photos. i saw one at the dealer and it looked pretty cool. i took a picture and its was ugly again on the photo. i ordered the SP Version 3 weeks ago and it should arrive at the end of april. i cant wait, its just a perfect bike

MegaTron-09SP looks very cool with his gold and blue accents. A nice addition to the Yamaha and KTM Decepticons. I only wonder if 2021 Ducati Autobot OptiMonster Prime is better than MegaTron-09SP

Can you do a head to head of the Tracer 9 GT's new semi-active suspension vs the '21 MT-09's Ohlin's + KYB setup? Those of us coming from the old FJ09s or Tracer 900s have our own aftermarket luggage are probably going to make a purchase decision based on key differences such as suspension.
Really wish they'd done away with the long seat and done a split seat with a higher tail, similar to the z900. Would of made it look less like a hunch back and almost perfect in my opinion
I recently tried out both the new MT-09 SP and the Z900. Ended up ordering the Kawasaki - I like the styling, the seat and the handling characteristics more on that bike. I do have to say that even though the Kawi engine is a stonking unit, the CP3 engine is a beast and it can really bring out the worst in you. After seeing this review I'm left thinking: did I make the right choice?
Both are terrific bikes! For the twisties and the mountain passes the SP does more than a fine job - if you should wish to take your bike to the race track more than often, the Street Triple would certainly be a good choice.
Why is yamaha so ass at headlights?… could just use the housing for the gen1 and put cool led’s inside like the ebay ones and it would be miles better than anything they’ve done.

Hey Dean, My thoughts exactly, I am about to buy the Z-900.. I like the goodies of the Yami ( I don't know if a quick shifter is included with the Kawi). My issue is I'm an older rider and need the lower seat height to flat foot. I wonder if a lowering kit is available for the MT-09? Otherwise it's the Kawi

Absolutely! The light weight, the torquey engine, Öhlins at the rear as well as S22 rubber and now with cruise control added: It makes the SP a very compelling package...

For the money it looks a crackerjack ride. Has all you need (would still like a centre stand) for long rides out but would probably question its touring ability. Still don’t know how Yamaha’s long-term build quality stands up to Honda’s, however. I still can’t be persuaded by the looks (overall) and particularly the front end.
Great..we know most of the big manufacturers make super reliable bikes these days but Honda’s build quality, certainly for their higher priced bikes, trumps the others for build and finish.

Well, I’m a 53 year old Scandinavian, and I think it looks amazing!! At first I was in doubt about the headlight, but seeing it in the flesh, it just fits the bike. Traded in my MT10 for a SP! :-D

So ugly ! Cables all over the place the horn underneath the headlight there is also a hole between the seat and the engine , the exhaust is unwatchable looks like a box under the motor 😳
From the perspective of someone who owned 1 pcs 2014, and 4 pcs of 2019, I can only tell, I wouldn't ever in my life buy antything after 2019. They reduced the power and every next line is weaker but overloaded with electronics aid and with serial failures. With 2014 you knew that the bike has jerky throttle but plenty of power. And thats it. Everyrhing after is just shit.
2013/2014 has jerky throttle. Nothing more. 2019 sp has freezing display, major failure with stalling at 7krpm in 2nd and 3rd gear, major problem with abs that switch off whenever the fuck he wants.
Should have left the front alone🤣. Looks like one of those battery lights, you see stuck on a cone during roadworks haha. That horn placement is shocking. Wouldn't mind a go on one though.
Compare it with the Z900 you had as long term (you forget to give us an update on it...)

I believe if you're doing long boring straight line daily commute the Tracer9 would be comfortable. Haven't tried it myself tho.

As a machine i really like the MT09 aesthetically not so sure but like you say see it in the flesh and i might have a different opinion.

The low weight (and agility) of the 2021 MT09 SP, fitted with Öhlins superbly controlling the rear, would decisive for me!

Yeah, the handlebar has HUGE raisers to put it in exactly the same position as the old one, despite the shorter front forks

I put 30,000 miles on my 2014 FZ-09, and never had one problem.

2019 sp has freezing display, major failure with stalling at 7krpm in 2nd and 3rd gear, major problem with abs that switch off whenever the fuck he wants.

And the placement of the horn is a shame 🤭😂
I don't care, because everyone will be looking at the tail, that is if they can keep up.
Should have left the front alone🤣. Looks like one of those battery lights, you see stuck on a cone during roadworks haha. That horn placement is shocking. Wouldn't mind a go on one though.
