There are actually situations where the S-I codec is lower quality than all of the others. Its prone to macroblocking. It's really only better when shooting scenes with a lot of motion. The HS codec is roughly twice as efficient and computers will handle it better if you're in the 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. It's when you go to 4:2:2 that computers will have a difficult time and you may benefit going to S since it's a bit less compressed. The technical reasons in simplest terms: S-I records brand new images for each frame. Less compression but more data needed to do that. Easier for computers to handle but more drive space. S is h.264 and creates one full image every few frames (I frames) and in between those it determines just the differences from the last frame to the next. HS is h.265 and will do the same thing but instead of just looking at the frame before it it will also use the frame after it to determine the differences. That's why it's harder for computers to edit it but it maintains its quality at lower bitrates.
Yes, that. I shot a project in S-I with the A7IV and FS7 and on S with the A7III, from 3 different angles. The A7III looked the best, because the other two cameras had so much macroblocking, that effectively the resolution went from 4K to 1080p.
As a note: there is no hardware accelerator /asics for decoding h264 10bit at all on any consumer hardware. In h265 there is an accelerator for 10bit 4:2:0 on most modern gpus and some other hardware, but ONLY intel supports h265 10bit 422 (in the latest three generations) Maybe apple does in m1 too but I'm not sure.
@definingslawek4731 intel Arc and Intel CPU's just to be specific as well. If you have an AMD cpu and want to utilize 422 then you can buy a cheap arc gpu and have a solid budget build.
I started my video editing journey over a year ago and I used to wonder why videos never looked as polished as urs, after watching numerous courses on colour grading and also currently on a few colour courses with davinci and learning about colour spaces and all, am starting to really respect and appreciate your grade on a different level⭐
@@KN-mi7mh this comment here makes know you have a good knowledge of this genre you are absolutely very correct😅😅...I also started taking courses on lighting and bought better lighting equipment too...learning about,3 point lighting when to use it,how to create certain moods and use shadows and lights effectively..did not realise this in itself was an artform
Totally agree!! S is the perfect combination of quality and compression as many reviewers have pointed out. Much easier to edit with and no discernible loss of quality. Clients who edit with my video files are much happier. HS not for everyone…Thanks for the nice video!!!
Ironically h265 is a lot easier to edit (if you have the hardware accelerators for it, most modern computer hardware has 10bit 420 h265 decoders but only the latest three generations of intel cpus with igpus have 10bit422 h265 decoders) The reason h265 is easier to edit in this case is because there exists no decoder for 10bit h264.
I've just today about an hour ago actually ordered myself the FX30, and have always been set on that camera for a while. I'm so glad I subscribed to you a while back when I first discovered your FX30 videos, they've helped me out so much with knowing exactly what to get alongside the camera such as SD/ CFeXA cards. Very clear and concise explanations with every feature I've had questions with, thank you again and I'll be sure to let you know how I've faired with it once I put it to use for my videos!🙌🏻 🎥
As a serious amateur photographer who is getting into videography, I just want to say a huge thanks for your incredible videos sharing all this info, it's unbelievably valuable! Thank you. So many camera folks are pushing the HS but I shoot at 30fps and it doesn’t work in that setting, so this was very helpful to see the comparisons.
I've always shot with the HAVC-HS. The differences in picture quality and color are too little for me to really care for, most of which I'm able to tweak in Davinci anyways. So to me, the Pro's outweigh the Cons. Luckily, I've built my computer to be GPU heavy to be able to run Davinci Resolve and I've had no problems! Plus, when doing weddings, sometimes the clients choose to have all the unedited footage. I found that HAVC-HS can be played back on almost every computer. The other two, some clients cannot play back the RAW data. So in order to do that I'd have to take all the footage and render it in an MP4 file just so they can watch it on their computers or devices... and I don't want to run into that issue. Also, I love having footage be great right out of camera, and the Cinetone does great, especially with controlled lighting. To me, you can have to most gucci camera on the most gucci settings, but if your lighting is bad, it's going to look horrible anyways. If you have great lighting, and a lower-to-mid-teir camera, it's always going to look better! But yeah that's just me!

Try walking on a brick road and record in all these codecs. Artifacts on bricks will be noticeable for S and HS, but not in Intra. And it is noticeable to the point for not usable footage.
Amazing Information as always. Yes that slight color shift in HS is for sure strange. Its also great seeing the 1800% comparisons. Thanks Jason! Cheers!

Thanks Jason, great video as usual. My desktop is ancient, but I am still able to edit the HS files using proxies in Premier. It does add another step and additional time, but it makes editing so much easier and I don't have to get a new desktop yet.
You should update your "PAL Regions" map ! At 2:14 there is a map indicating PAL regions, I know at least France, which is not included, is a PAL country now (it uses to be "SECAM" which was a different 50i format from PAL, but in any case at lot closer to PAL than to NTSC). The thing with this map is it doesn't show the "SECAM" regions, which are all 25p or 50i regions. In fact you should either include PAL/SECAM/NTSC regions map or, more to the point nowadays, a 25 vs 29.97 map. Cheers

Biggest difference maker is whether or not your processor supports the newer h.265 codec. If you’re running an M1 you basically don’t need to encode at all. I don’t on my M1 MacBook Air.
XAVC-HS plays ok on mine until you start putting layers etc. on it. But IMO it's not a great codec as the compression vs loss is a bit on the poor side (not efficient enough), but it stores higher quality at a better compression than 264 codecs. HS decoding isn't about power, it's about interpretation, as the M1 included a video encoder/decoder chip that includes this format it will outsource encoding/decoding to this chip so the CPU itself can do other things. That colour shift is interesting. In the real-world clips it made it all look a bit cooler. Great video man, good information. Interesting minimal differences between the formats, possibly chip noise is the bottleneck there Or pissibly it just has more keyframes in the lower-end codecs to keep the quality up. But it shows the output is remarkably similar regardless of format chosen.

The 10-bit XAVC S codec does not support gpu acceleration for decoding in Premiere, and this stresses your cpu even if you have a 12th gen i7. It happened to me in the first video I recorded with the a7iv and it was horrible to edit. If you're going to use XAVC S, it should be 8 bit, and I don't see much sense in it either, being able to use 10 bit and have a greater range of color editing with the Sony a7iv, Siii and fx.

What I really want is something like the fda-ev1mk electronic viewfinder that was sold for earlier Sony compacts small and mounted on the flash mount not the larger clumsy bulky external viewfinders generally available. Any suggestions please ?
I believe when your shooting externally tho, like the Ninja V+ it's recording Prores, and it's basically just like XAVC S-I i believe it's all-Intra when shooting with the Ninja, and it's like 500 MBPS..
Is there a way you can trim long videos off the camera.I’m having trouble getting my 10 bit file off the camera
hey what is that strap used on the side of your camera called ?
Thanks for the information. However, probably it does not make sense to use static images to compare codecs.
Hence the other footage shot with moving subjects
