That multi watt sounds cleaner than a nun's chocolate starfish
beautiful words bro.
oh shit it's bakerxdickhead
Cheah!
We must have alot in common cause i see you everywhere lol
Your channel is the first thing I've felt the urge to call fucking gay since the 8th grade, no hate on you as a person but you produce absolute aneurysm-inducing content. PS you can't have a clean starfish that is also chocolatey, it's the ultimate contradictory statement
Fluff, could you do EVH vs. Peavey?
+1!
That will be very interesting !
That would be interesting.
diferent beast!
sonny photography still a worthy comparison
My analysis
The 94 rev F is the box of 16 crayons
The 17 multi-watt is the box of 72 crayons with the built in sharpener
Travis Ross Rev F is a white crayon that was in somebody’s pocket for like another. Multi-watt is a box of 72 with a built in sharpener
I still prefer the sound of older rectos. I know they aren't as refined or clean, but that's what I like about them. That raw wooly sound just has so much character to it. The newer ones are by all means "better" amps, but they are way more fizzy and sterile. The last few comparisons are very close between the two. Going to show that it all comes down to EQ. Those sounds are still in the new 3 channel rectifiers, they just aren't as easy to find.
couldn't have said it better!
agree about the fizz but if you eq it right and crank it you can get rid of most of it, least that is what I have found with mine
Agreed
Agreed, and that top end would get sliced off in most mixes anyways. The old one always sounds good in combo with drums/bass/another guitar etc. You have to try hard to make it sound bad. The newer ones sound good by themselves but take much more tweaking to dial in on a mix, though they can usually get there.
Not gonna be better for most applications, but it has some niche tones that need that dirtiness in the tone. I definitely think the nature of the old rectifier's is what contributed to Metallica's Load tone, love it or hate it.
I'm a dual rec fan boy. I have pined for one for god knows how long and I was finally able to buy one used. I got it off reverb. Don't know what year it's from, it's a three channel dual rec, I cleaned it all up, de-oxit on all the knobs and inputs, retubed it, and couldn't be happier. I could sit and watch this kind of stuff for days.
am i the only one who loves the darker sound of the 94 dual rec? it may not be as clean as the 2017 multi-watt but i really think sounds great.
I personally dont hear the older one being darker. It seems rounder, chewier and more musical in its distortion. The new one sounds square, processed and dark.
@@BigTyronie rounder chewier musical square processed dark, these are some very VERY subjective terms....
@@bibiranger I like to think of it as vinyl vs CD..
They are obviously quite tonally similar, but the new model has a bit more presence or bite to it, with a better clean channel as well. That with modern features like multi-watt assignment makes it a winner.
I´m sorry about the lame shit, but this song always brings me to tears...
I covered this song so many times, and it was on the happiest time of my life...
Damn I miss those days, with my girlfiend my friends, and my father still alive...
max_guitar_vids Everlong by Foo Fighters
All good dude. Song makes me tear up too.
it is a strong song
I feel you deeply
☯️
Single coils actually sound really good through a rectifier.
E V E R L O N G
On an infinite loop :)
Correction, *_F O R E V E R L O N G_*
Crazy. You can actually hear the progression of classic metal tones to modern metal when comparing the 2 :p
Regression
i think the real winner here is Mesa Boogie. a new variation, on a 25 year old amp that is both current with technology, but still captures what makes the original such a classic! love the multi watts clean channel, that was a much needed improvement. sick t-shirt btw!
All Eq's at noon, just a little bit of reverb.
Branden De Leon it's Tuesday...
TELE TUESDAY.
wrong show
Ok boomer
I just bought a 2001 single rectifier. It seems to be in perfect working order. No hissing, or crackling pots.
I don't know what to look for honestly. Im working up the courage to take the chassis out and inspect the board and sockets for any signs of burns or damage.
The footswitch even works! No lag/delay as I hear many people complaining about with Mesa's. Got lucky I guess!?
When I finally get my Mesa I'm gonna sing to it....
HELLO, IVE WAITED HERE FOR YOU..EVERLONGGG
I’m hoping they have that Black Out version in two months. That thing not only sounds gorgeous, it looks like a beast.
2017 sounds better at 12 on all the channels, but when EQed to taste they sound closer. Overall the 2017 wins for me on the fact that most of the channels sound like they have more life on them. They are a bit more puncher.
And if you want the sound of the 2channel clean, just flip channel 2 into raw mode.
totally agree with you.
Lucas LeCompte To me the distorted sound was better and more "buttery" on the old Rect. than the 2017.
Yeah totally agree, Multi Watt for me.
100% agree. Lol thought everyone was gonna say "oh the old one sounds wayyyyyyy better" lol
I guess it just depends what kind of a sound you're after. Both sound amazing.
1994 has more aggressive midrange and the 2017 has more highs and sounds a bit fizzier to me. Aside from the cleans it sounds like you can get them pretty close though.
When you love mesa boogie but will never afford one.
Ray Amukwaya Dude you can get a good one used just save up for it!! It's worth the experience of playing on one of these!
I got mine from haggling. Guitar stores can in fact do that; and I haggled with Guitar Center. if GC'll go back and fourth, I can't imagine any other shops that wouldn't. Or buy one that's used. You might have to retube it immediately, which is a little costly, but it'll get the job done. There's tons of great deals on older multiwatts, 90/2000s rectos/marks, and even the minis that you could get a great deal on, not to mention cabs used are nearly half the cost of one new.
How much do they go for on the used market?
Ray Amukwaya In my country a used one is around 950$ which is approximately 806€.
At the moment I'm using amp sims.BIAS
I'd keep the Multi-watt… :D
In the process of buying one of these myself... Seems to me the obvious difference is most of the songs we grew up on were played on the old, not the new. Newer is more full. Thinking the original is best for me! Thank you for taking the time to post.
I think the 2017 model sounds overall better. Much more clear and clean when it is supposed to be clean and the gain has much more girth and balls with the new one and the old one has more of a biting mid range throughout every channel
Played a triple in Vancouver many moons ago, and it was the best sounding distortion I had ever heard. This was the year 2000, and ever since I could never dial one of these the same.
*Buying used Mesas is like buying a newer model used car: bypass the initial depreciation and take advantage of better value.*
Exactly.
I picked up my 3-channel 100 watt for $900 in immaculate/studio condition on reverb lol.
Glenn Conner amen! I got mine for $725! Dude just needed to get rid of it.
Yeah, If you can deal with it mentally it's best for sure, however, I've always had a bit of an issue with it just because you don't know how the previous owner or owners treated it prior to your ownership.
I just picked up a dual rectifier road king for $1200 in mint condition!!! I'm so stoked!!!
Got my dual 2 channel, Ibanez Rg350mdx, Marshall MF280 cab with the V30s for $700 best deal I could have ever got
Multi-Watt takes the cake for me, and this video is part of the reason I just ordered one 🤘🏼
94 was a good year. Hearing a dual recs raw power live is what’s so iconic about the amp imo
That's the only way they sound acceptable to me - really cranked up. Tons of headroom and as long as it's in a mix, I like it. On their own? Never been a fan. I used to be really excited about them until I finally got to try one and was really disappointed in it. I know a lot of people like to put an overdrive in front of it, but I just cant get over that grungy looseness to it. And I was puzzled why these could sound so good on records, before learning that most heavy guitar sounds sound pretty good dual tracked and thrown in a mix. Not an amp/sound I'd ever want for general solo playing.
Those Everlong bits made my day, cheers dude !
The Rev F sounds so much better to my ears. Less scooped and more open in the midrange.
Did fluff just play mesas without mix?! Christmas came early for me boys, Thanks Ryan!
I know right??
Can you do a similar “to taste” comparison between the 5150/6505 and 5150ii/6505+...please 🙃
A. Wagner yeah I know. I meant to compare the 5150 (same as 6505) vs the 5150ii(same as 6505+)...with we tweaking so they sound their best. Fluffs comparison in a previous video (along with the 6505mh) was with all knobs at 12 o’clock
Thanks for the reply though. I see how my question could have easily been misinterpreted.
I know this was 9 months ago, but i actually did that myself. My friend has a 6505 and i have a 5150ii, and we compared them trough the same cab. We tried identical settings, and it sounded pretty similar, but not completely. So then we tried tweaking both of them, and i managed to wrangle a completely identical sound from both heads.
Awesome video! Personally I like the muli-watt better, but tone aside, hot dayum! The murdered out Dual Rec looks so sick!
Fluff I've been having trouble choosing my new amp, would you recommend the Mesa Dual Rectifier or the Mesa Dual Rectifier?
Ordacleaphobia definitely the latter
*Remembers Triple, Single, and Mini Rectifiers exist* *head explodes*
Triple rec and a single rec.
ReVv Generator 120 ^__^
I parted ways with a dual rectifier full stack (2 heads and 2 412 cabs) six years ago... I think for $2250 total is what I got. Oh well
I have been telling folks for awhile that Mesa hit a homerun with the multiwatt. I did the personal comparison about a year ago when I wanted to buy another recto. After hearing the multiwatt, I couldn't really understand what all the hype was for the REV f, G etc. anymore.
3 years ago I couldn't justify either. Today after seeing a 100 watt 90's dual rectifier in person at my local music store I decided to do some research. Now I feel I need both plus a boogie mark I for some reason.
I'm in love with the multiwatt new recto. I'll be getting mine's on thursday, can't wait!
Preferred Green and Orange on the Multi and the Red on the Rev F although even then it wasn't blowing the new model out of the water imo. I guess this shows that just because it is new doesn't automatically mean it is bad.
Now, that's how you do a comparison video, great job!
this was pretty cool
nicely done
Thanks Fluff for this amazing comparison..! 🤘😀
I have a '94 Recto and the lead tone could not be sweeter to my ears. I gigged the Hell out of it and everyone asked me about that head. I wouldn't switch to a newer one based on this demo.
The Multi-watt pretty much slays in every setting. The 2 channel just sounds thin in comparison. This reinforces how glad I am to have recently snagged a multi-watt. Killer video! 👍🏻
Very impressed how they sound really different! the old rectifier has much more mids response which I like it, but the new rectifier has better clean tone, maybe too noisy in the dist channels
Couldn't have picked a better song to demo a rectifier. Great demo!
Best comparison on the net bro :) love it!
Love to see a OD boost comparison between both and even a delay pedal!
Great comparison, and an excellent choice of song \m/
1994 rev. F has the attitude and soul
Oh wow. You showed that cab and I was like "ah yeah, that's the cab Everclear was using when I first saw them live." Then you said what you said! Woah! Nice!
love em both honestly some of the best recodings ive heard friends do is a 2 amp mix with both of these or a modern rec with a marshall or vintage recto
They both sound great. I had an early 90’s Dual Rec in the early 90’s and played the crap out of it for 10 years so my sentimental ears love the old recto sound. It actually gave me the feelz listening to you play the FF’s tugging at my heartstrings. The new one sounds nice and clear admittedly, but the old recto is kind of like seeing your old first love and she still looks hot. The old dark growl is what I miss. Great video! Ps. I know what you mean about the old recto’s EQ…used to drive me crazy…what the heck is this EQ doing??!
nice! been waiting for this!
The older is darker, a little warmer, the newer is brighter, a little more articulate. Totally spot on with the vintage/modern adjustment to match channel qualities. They can sound almost identical when dialed in. The older ones have a hard time getting sparkly cleans without any pedals.
Late to the party on this one. I took delivery on a custom 2017 Triple around the time this video came out. I have now owned it longer than any other amp. Played it at band practice two days ago and fell in love with it all over again.
They both sound great! 👍🏻👍🏻
The 1994 sounds like it sits in the mix of every 90’s and early 2000’s song 🎵 🎧
Can’t believe you have the Mesa cab from the ‘So much for the afterglow tour’!!!
The rev f sounds better with single coils. The 2017 with single coils sounded too tinny to me, but sounds great with humbuckers, tamed that fizzy gain. I loved the clean channel on the 2017.
The multi-watt really shines with the humbuckers. There's a little hiss in the 2017 rig but a little EQ would fix it very quick. It's a situation where I love the mids on the revision F but the modern appointments of the multi-watt are super attractive. I think it would be hard to go wrong with either though. Punk rock forever.
I preferred the old one in all channels which is weird since i usually like more modern clean and lead channels but appreciate old crunch sounds more. Also i have to say i am a bit shocked about how i prefer my tone over those two (unprocessed through shure sm57s which i also use), since one of the heads alone costs 3 times more than my whole rig (engl fireball 60, laney aor212 with celestion g12m-70s). Thanks for your effort Fluff, i think i am a bit more confident about my tone now. Keep rocking, you teached me a lot \m/
A recto with a usable clean channel? Woah. Great video Fluff!
great video, best of all recto comparisons on youtube.
Good video.
The revision f sounds more mid rangey and less fizzy than the new one.
The new one sounded more scooped.
Excellent comparison sir. I feel like the 2nd half (where they’re both dialed into taste) shows really how similar these amps are! If you put a low pass filter on the multi-watt it would be so close to the old recto it’d be very hard to tell
Nice vid Ryan! Came out good. I miss nerding out on amp vids, takes me back to 2015 when I was amp shopping. Cheers!
I'm happy with my multiwatt, the green in crunch, orange in vintage and red in raw are each amazing in their own right! I love that I have a 50 watt option, though when it is on 100 it isn't twice as loud, it just has more headroom. Keeley Red Dirt brings out the best in this amp! Cheers.
They are so different! in ways i love the original but in some cases i do quite like the multi watt.
I really liked the cleans from the new Recto. But, I liked aspects of both! Amp choice is definitely song dependent. I feel either one will get you what you need, other than the great cleans of the 2017 if you needed that. Huge recto fan and thank you for this video Fluff!
I kinda like the 2017 more to my taste! But I really would be happy with any of the two. Great video man!
Excellent job on this comparison Fluff, and by excellent I mean over and above your usual terrific job. I preferred the multi-watt version but on certain parts the older one sounded more edgy, aggressive and raw.
Very good demo, Ryan.
I liked both of them equally. I liked the warmness of the older one, but the clarity of the newer one. I think between the two I'd probably choose the newer one because I'd always be trying to dial in more attack out of the old one.
Holy shit that Multi-watt sounds really crisp. Nice. But I really wanna hear that dark, low-end flub of the Rev F boosted with an OD. I love that classic, massive sound.
An excellent and fair comparison! You have improved greatly in this aspect and I say that becasuse my main gripe with your videos used to be that you used unwanted postprocessing and made overall unfair/inaccurate demos. This is however not the case with this video. Awesome video, Fluff!
FINALLY A TEST DONE WHERE THE AMPS ARE SET TO THEIR SWEET SPOT!! A TRUE TEST FINALLY!!!
Part 2 through a cab! When you dial in through your monitors is there a difference when compare to you going into a cab and dialing it in?
Hello, I've waited here for you, Ed Furlong.
The “clean” on the rev F was hilarious
Just bought myself a used dual rec maverick 2×12. Such a sweet amp.
Man, that single coil guitar into Dual Rec. is just so juicy, so sweet! Gotta get myself one!
That multi watt has to win! So clean sounding, even when driven!
Sounds like the new one has a much improved output transformer, but an increased amount of top-end fizzyness as a result. Gotta tame that top-end hair when you use a less-restrictive OT.
Great choice of a song covered this for my high school graduation
that Rev F just sounds so classic from the very first note played. the new one's cleans just cant compare.
Best call I ever got came in 2009..."Your Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier is in.."
I love that the old one got all the mids u wanna have for a fat sound ... i love these mids!!!
A little abstract for when I revisit this vid:
2:12 - the knobs values aren't the same
2:48 then the newer presence knob is at 8 o'clock
3:10 cab Mesa 1986 dual rectifier 4x12 (what is a "broken in" speaker? A very old one? How does the tone changes with time?)
In the first few seconds of this video you sounded like the Swedish chef 👍. Great video. I have to say that Mesa really did a great job with the new Rec.
The 2017 one sounds way clearer in pretty much every scenario. Mesa has learned a lot during the years, that speaks great of them.
they both sound pretty badass, not gonna lie.
The multiwatt sounds so clean and polished, in comprarison the 2 channel spunds like a lpw resolution bit file or something
They sound quite similar. The MW sounds just like the 2 channel, but with more treble/presence, and less bass. I bet you could get the MW to sound just like the rev F though with some basic eq adjustments.
the multi watt once dialed in sounds crazy nice!
Never owned them both at the same time but I'm glad I decided on the 2 channel. I like my rectifier mid heavy and filthy. Most of my guitars have neck single coils for clean rhythms so...
Same brand tubes in the preamp section? The 1994 sounds like it has some more worn in or another type of 12 AX7s in there.
I really liked your mixes but still I'm glad you decided to test amps without it. It gives us better feedback.
How do I tell which revision I have? I have a two channel Dual Rectifier but I have no idea when it was made. Stay awesome!!
I think that the multi watt was cleaner but fizzier and kinda tinny sounding. The 1994 was a bit muddier but had a more pleasing distortion/overdrive
The Strat sounds amazing with these heads. Something about dark amps and single coils...
what interface do you use? or did you use camera for this
