- Ever wondered how much a Warhammer 40K army costs? Well in this video we take a look at a top competitive list from each faction to give you a more realistic price for a well rounded competitive force.
All of the prices are how much a Warhammer 40k army actually costs directly from Games Workshop. There are of course ways to save money which I'll go over in a future video in more detail.
This is meant to be a guideline amount for a well rounded competitve force, rather than the cheapest way to get to 2000 points or even the way you may like to build an army. . Plus as the meta changes so too will the unit composition so costs are likely to fluctuate.
These Competitive lists are top ranking positions from Tournaments at the end of 2023, just in case people are watching in the future.

Admech player here, I love my army, but if you were starting from scratch in 10th I would recommend any other army. The costs are absolutely insane at this point.
That is such a shame, considering if I ever make the step to collecting, the mechanicus speaks the most to me
Honestly, while it is an expensive army to collect, if you take your time as they can be quite fiddly to put together it’s not too bad in the long run, plus there may be more value boxes like the old Christmas one in the future too.

I would also like to point out that no one will just stop at 2000 points and run the exact same list until the edition changes. People build up to 2K points and then buy additional units so that they can play different lists and builds this further increasing the cost.
100% as people will like options, plus as the meta/points cost changes so too will lists.
Atleast once I'm at 2k I'll buy like a model here and there instead of buying s bunch at once lol

I just realized that here in the US the price is just worse, beyond pounts per dollar. For instance, Orks converted to dollars is $776, but with the prices here its $956.
The Admech one would cost $1330 here which would be about 1047 pounds, rather than the 752.5 it actually costs in the UK. Also generally the cheapest part of Admech lists IS the vehicles, specifically breachers, or kastellans if you use them. And the list you gave was using 18 of them, so imagine if we leaned more into the other strong units instead
Those are some eyewatering figures there, I get there being shipping to the states involved, but I can't imagine it's that much more!

I trust your numbers, I meant how they can charge that much more in the US, with the only extra cost being shipping to over there from the UK.
As someone who works in international shipping. The additional cost on a box once tarrifs, duties, and shipping costs are paid would be a few dollars depending on the size of the box and how many fit one a container. And roughly a 27% increase for exchange rate. So a box that is 100 pounds for example should be 130ish american dollars
Living in EU I barely heard much of anyone saying much how expensive the hobby is, I mean sure it's expensive everyone knows that, but given the amount of time to put into it and you trade that for something else, it could be worse. But learning the US just got like a 20-30% increase in their pricing makes me get all the "Traded my kidney for Warhammer minis" jokes over the internet that likely comes from mostly US people.

Anyone in the US looking for a quick converios can just take any of these numbers and divide it by 0.75, however that will just give you a conversion. Prices in the US are higher than the UK prices, so beyond the higher conversion rate the prices are even higher than that

I told a newbie on a 40k discord that an army costs $800, a few members of the community were furious with me since "YOU CAN GET 2x LEVIATHAN AND HAVE 2k MARINES!" like thats a valid army or collection strategy.
I mean there are plenty of ways to make an army cheaper to collect than what the competitive players are using/most optimal builds at the time. End of the day as long as you’re happy and enjoying yourself that’s all that matters 👍
But 2x leviathan box certainly isn’t remotely recommended for Space Marines..
After starting(restarting)40k 2 years ago today, I can say choosing necrons in 9th was a great call. Ease of painting made it great for experimenting, acclimatizing, and treating the models more like a painting. The rules were great for learning and adapting to games shifting in and out of my favor, people enjoyed playing against me, and they were reasonably affordable.
But, boy do I wish I had picked Thousand sons instead of tyranids for my second army. All the space and money I'd have saved. I guess I'll just have to live with them being a third.
Anyway, I'm pretty shocked at HOW much that Druhkari list went up with the talos kits. The combat patrol is a pretty great deal for them and I think they don't have to be painful to collect. But ,watching the counter go from 232 to 457 made my do a spit-take. I really hope the new points and their codex are kind to them.

Sorry to hear about your thoughts after picking a second army, the Tyranids range refresh is great, yeah there is quite a lot of them. At least you didn’t pick Genestealer cults or guard if you wanted more room! To be fair with this hobby we all end up accumulating more and more models and hopefully one day you do get to try out those thousand sons, they are lovely models (especially Magnus) although the trim can be a little overwhelming, especially coming from Necrons/nids.
In terms of the Drukhari, I personally wouldn’t want to run 3 Cronos and 3 Talos as there are so many wonderful kits from their rework. Like the Incubi, witches, more kabalites and so on. I’m sure once they receive a codex or changes in a dataslate then more of the potentially cheaper lists (with the use of the combat patrol) could start appearing. The only issue for Drukhari is that they can be used as allies for Ynarri so it’s making sure they don’t end up skewing those lists.

Thanks for responding! I do have a lot of fun playing my tyranids and going to town painting them, I think I just wish there wasn't QUITE so many models of the same type to paint. But I adore using vanguard, and I probably would have grabbed them eventually.
I also hope that the next drukhari patrol is as good and has some boats in it still, this one is so perfect!

I’ve just picked up a few nids myself as I loved the look of the new Deathleaper model, although with Sisters and Orks I’m used to sizeable armies xD Glad you’re having a lot of fun though, that’s the main thing!
I’ll be keeping an eye on how the combat patrols are changing as the releases come out, it may well end up being one to grab before it does, but you are right, it’s a great box that really embodies what the army is about.

I'm happy I started a Thousand Sons army and found last year's Christmas box at my local shop for around 125 pounds and its fully used in this list.
That was an incredible box to start an army, great work in finding one. Not sure why GW don’t offer something like that more throughout the year tbh.
I loved seeing this content! My only gripe is in not making as much use of combat patrols as you could. E.g., for gsc, the list only uses acolyte and neophyte hybrids from the combat patrol. Those would cost 92.5, vs. 95 for the combat patrol, which would also net a truck, some aberrants, and a magus.
For actual savings, drukhari uses everything but the archon and the incubi. The costs of the units that do get used are: 100. So buying the combat patrol would save 5 quid and give you extra models above and beyond the army.
That’s a good point and that’s why the grey knight one is so good. Although with the changes to Drukhari with the skysplinter detachment and Archon’s now able to join Incubi it makes that combat patrol even better!
For the Brotherhood Librarian of the Grey Knights, just use an Space Marines Librarian Consul or Librarian in Terminator Armour, and paint it grey instead of Blue.

When it comes to the Plague Marines, you actually need to look at what they're equipped with, because each box of 7 doesn't build enough options, so it is more like TEN boxes of Plague Marines for the DG list
That's a good point, I should have looked a little closer at, but I think from looking at the competitive list just now I think it might just be 3 extra meltaguns needed, so definitely a bits supplier for those rather than buying extra whole boxes.
If your savy with converting and green stuff I'd say go with the new horus heresy mkIII tactical set, you get 20 marines in one box plus it is in theme with the death guard. then invest in the special HH special weapons box which gives you so many plasmas and Melta guns (note i feel the rotor cannons barrel can be snippied off and made shorter to resemble a blight weapon) plus I prefer the look of volkites to plasmas but the plasma option is always there if you want it. It pretty much cuts the cost of the marines by half. If you need close combat heavy weapons just look for power fist bits.

Used to play 40k Space Marine 30 years ago. Me and the lads were young teenagers....two of my friends also had very large Warhammer armies. None of us had much disposable income from Saturday/Sunday jobs etc. Bulk of armies was built from plastic box sets with hero's etc as cast models.
Glad to see 40k still going strong, and these modern sculpts are very very nice, but £500+ for an army is just preposterous.

You were like many of us then, using up all your pocket money/part time job to buy into this game and honestly since covid I don't think the game has ever been more popular (as a whole). But yes, the prices are a bit on the crazy side these days directly from Games Workshop, although as mentioned there definitely are ways to make it a lot cheaper with a little bit of work/shopping around. Especially Space Marines on the secondary market.
I think I've probably still got a fair few of those metal models somewhere!

As someone hos still very noob like to warhammer, its been a very casual 12 months since i purchased myfirst models, which was about £180 of grey knights, then my partner wanted to get involved so grabed a few Slannesh models, and myself some Nurgle.....which both had about 700-900pts for AoS and cost a out £220, then i purchased some nurgle for about 700 pts and £120

As and old man (started with 2nd edition) something that isn’t mentioned too much is how much larger armies have gotten. I still have a few armies from way back and while in 2e/3e they were 1500 or 2000, pointed out in 10th the range from 800-1300 pts.
So not only are the models more, but you need nearly twice as many of them.
That’s a great point. I mean Votann had a pretty substantial change from 9th to 10th with their massive points drop and then the first balance dataslate we got late last year meant my list had another 400 points to spend on top!
I’d love to try and find the points costs of armies from say 2nd/3rd edition and compare it to now.
@@TheCommandPhase for just one iconic example a 10 man Space Marine tactical squad in 2e cost 300pts before any wargear or heavy/special weapons. Whereas now a tactical squad (first born) is 160 with free wargear.
You need to buy (and paint!) almost twice as many miniatures to be able to field an army
Working as intended.
1.) 40k is expensive, but wait until people find out how many models you need to play 2k points of the old world/fantasy. 40k was originally touted as the cheaper alternative to WHFB, and it's still the case.
2.) All GW is expensive, not just 40k. However, if you're one of the many people who's local scene doesn't have a strong community for Mantic/Parabellum/Warlord games/etc. Then what you're really paying for is a "Guaranteed to find opponents" Tax. You can go to any game store in the world and find a game of 40k... the same definitely can't be said for Deadzone, Konflict 47, Kings of war, etc.
These are fantastic points, thank you for sharing. I agree it’s a pretty expensive hobby overall but for sure people can make it cheaper or more expensive depending on their army/game choices.
Totally agree about the “Gaming tax” as you put it to be able to play the game as it’s such a popular game compared to many others that you’ve mentioned. I’ve not tried them myself, but that’s probably more down to loving the models made by GW for far too long in my life. My friends do have some other gaming systems to try, but we always end up going back to 40K.
@TheCommandPhase That's usually how it goes. 40k has such a unique IP and game system that can't really be replicated without very real possibilities of copyright law being violated. It's almost impossible to replace 40k with a different game system, but the other game systems are perfect for if you and your scene is getting burned out on 40k.

I'm at the printing stage of my fandom
Especially since I started Grey Knights to get into 10th and their entire range outside of Crowe needs a refresh. I augmented some stuff I already had, but I did print proxies for my strike squads that fit the aesthetic and are scaled to be primaris-sized. It makes my terminators looks like dwarfs, but I'm assuming down the road the GK Termis and Strike boxes will be redone
I also proxied Draigo because $30-50 for an online only out of stock resin mini that clutch to the faction is a hearty kick in the pants
Rumours are they're getting an update this edition and fingers crossed they do as Crowe looks great, so having the rest the same would be awesome!
New Deathwing Assault Box can be preordered for 230 CAD which is pre good for 1000 points

you can put together a competitive custodes army with two combat patrol boxes and two or three custodian/allarus/warden boxes. probably around $400-$450.
While correct, these armies were formed off of actual competitive lists.
If we were going for the cheapest way to assemble an army, then none of these lists are valid, but that was never the point. :)
@@daringdarius5686 custodes battleline units are very strong. you can make a list thats just all custodians and its a top tier competitive list. i definitely think theyre the cheapest army overall to get tournament ready while having a good shot at winning the tournament. Being easy to paint is a plus as well. Theyre my recommended faction for anyone looking to start playing competitively.
@@Khobai I will say, custodes is EASILY the best army for someone new to the hobby for every reason under the sun. They could completely give up on the painting (because it's hard) and just spray paint them gold lol
The custodes are one of the best/easiest armies to start playing with in terms of overall cost small amount o f models to build, easy to paint up like you said too. While their combat patrol is good, those bikes need a bit of help as they're currently pretty poor compared to the other datasheets and I didn't see many at all in current "meta" lists when reseaching for this video. Hopefully in their new codex we might see a bit of a resurgence from them as I love the bike models. Plus the captain on bike's ability is pretty good.
But yes, overall the Custodes are a very good budget faction to start playing with.
@@TheCommandPhase honestly taking 6 vertus praetors really doesnt matter all that much. Absolute worst case a unit of 6 is like 60 points overcosted. If you enter a tournament with 6 vertus praetors in your list i highly doubt thats going to be the deciding factor whether you place or not. That said I do think vertus praetors should probably be T7 and 70-75 points each.
I don't know how people can afford to play this game anymore. Good job with the video.
I mean there are a fair number of ways to reduce the cost, but if other players are anything like me we end up just buying more models with the savings 🤦♂️

Not every LGS is great at giving discount like some of the online ones, you’re in the same boat as me with your closest hobby store being RRP. Thankfully for me a fair number of great online stores are really reliable here that I tend to order from the majority of the time.

I use to play at the closest store but an awkward dynamic came of it because I only ever purchased paint and stuff and never ever any models yet would bring in new models every week lol so they basically dogged me out of playing there but I haven't quit!
Glad you like them. I can kind of see both sides, although if you were regularly purchasing your hobby supplies from them, it's a shame that wasn't enough. But I guess the markup on those models if they aren't at a discount is a fair whack of money for the store. I get most of my stuff online these days, but dod pop into my local store for the odd event and may well pick up a box or something while I'm there (mainly for lack of self control!) Good that you haven't quit though and I'm sure there would be hobby groups in your area for games.

My guess is least expensive is Custodes due to point cost per model. Most expensive is Guard due to how many models they field.

my last 2 armies (chaos knights and genestealer cults) came to under £300 each, my black legion currently at about 7k is like 5 or 6 times that cos ive collected every model. comes down to what you want pay for, a 2k list or a collection
Oh 100% you can make collecting an army a lot cheaper than going directly, which I’ll be chatting about in a future video. But a GSC army under £300 is really good fair play 👍

I have been a fan of Warhammer since 1992. I will never, ever spend another penny at games workshop. Absolutely ridiculous. At this price, the models should literally be cast in bronze. Literally.
just the plastic price alone is bad enough then you have the route of painting yourself which is hard or easy varies from people to people , i myself never satisfy with my own skill so i have to commission the whole 2000 point instead
I don’t know how much it would cost to get an army commissioned but I totally get never being happy with my own paint jobs. It’s something I certainly need to start learning to accept and use it as a learning experience for the next one. Easier said than done of course!
And then being in the US the mark up makes all of these dumb expensive like the cheapest army us has is more expensive then the uk.

I have such decision paralysis haha I have a single tau box I use for kill team but I’m not even sure I’m all in on tau. They’re cool looking but they also only play one way and that kinda sucks. But idk 😅😅 I kinda like guard but for some reason I assume they are also mostly shooty boys
Ah welcome to Warhammer with so many amazing models and armies to choose from. The Guard are definitely a shooty army, trading battlesuits for tanks - so if that’s more up your street then definitely go for them. But bar ogryns they won’t have much more melee than tau. (Granted the kroot will shake that up a bit)
There are certainly armies out there that are more versatile and play in more of the phases if that’s more of what you’re looking for.
Do these prices factor in things like Combat Patrol boxes, where multiple units are cheaper?
Also, if you think UK prices are scary, you should see what things cost when they go on sale in New Zealand!
Oh for sure the NZ prices are eye watering! These prices did include combat patrols where possible for the lists that could utilise them to save money, but not many of these competitive lists did. Think it was just the Tau, World Eaters, Votann and Death Guard.
I thought Genestealer Cult woult be expensive and Guard. Also Adeptus Sorroritas. My armies are actually quite Cheap, but probably not competitive. Space Hulk 1st Edition (1989) provided some Terminators and Genestealers for my Space Wolves and Nids armies. Then Advanced Space Crusade (1991) provided me with 6 nid warriors, 10 Sniper Scouts and 5 Wolf Scouts with a bit of a kit bash. My 2nd Ed Bjorn was about £20 new I think? Then I had an Iron Priest who was probably £3, plus 7 Wolfguard Terminators who were probably £15 for a box? My 2 x Grey hunters are kitbashed out of an early 90s Tactical Squad that cost £10 I think? Then it probably cost me £35 to £45 to kitbash my Long Fangs. The Nids that were added were 2 x Carnifexes and 2 x Hive Tyrants that were probably £20 each in 1993/1994? Then I got an extra 3 warriors - probably £10. Then, 2 Biovores and a Lictor with 6 Spore Mines - so probably about £25 all in? Oh the Space Wolves have a recent Dreadnought £37.50? So if we factored £50 for each army for the copies of SPace Hulk and Advanced Space Crusade that puts the Nids at £165 for approx 1600 pts? Space Wolves at about £175 for 1500 points approx? Though the Sniper Scouts are in Legends now so... Adeptus Sororitas, I have got the Sanctorum Guard for Xmas, so it was sort of Free but cost someone £100 ? Then I added 3 Arco Flags from Ebay for £10 or so? Dialogus, Hospitalier, Imagifier, Missionary - maybe £70 worth? And I got 5 Retributors and Exorcist for next Xmas so about £75 worth? I wanted to add Celestine and Zephyrim to take them up to 1500 pts. Probably be about £300 to get to 1500 pts. Not sure about where I'll go from there.

In terms of your sisters army, with the new codex coming out in the next few months, hopefully it'll add some more variety to list building, but from what you have currently you're in a great place. Probably looking at maybe a rhino or two to transport some more repentia, or grabbing a couple seraphim squads with hand flamers to come on the back field and cause problems to some smaller units wouldn't be a bad shout. The triumph has just had a small nerf, but is a fantastic models and certainly one I'd recommend, even just for the collection. The best part of that army is that all the models look fantastic :)
@@TheCommandPhase yeah, triumph looks amazing, but not sure my skills are up to doing it justice. I can see why they changed it, the way it was if you saved your dice and did re-rolls and make and miracle dice a six you could potentially just make something happen in a later turn. Mi instinct is Celestine + Zephyrim to get to 1500 then maybe immolator, Castigatir more arco flagellants or some Repentia? Maybe even a couple of crusaders to put with a cheap character to go after empty objectives or throw into battle to generate miracle dice for the stronger units. Aside from solid anti-tank and anti-monster I think the Sisters actually have some real flexibility and options.
Least expensive is def custodes nit after they got a ton of point drops in the kist recent data slate I’m not sure if thats still true

Glad world eaters are on the cheaper side I was looking up what might be a fun 1000 point army to run and I had almost completely dif models they almost matched the price for the 2000 point army granted I was looking for more of a fun army and not a powerful one
To be fair with World Eaters, the Combat Patrol is a fantastic start to an army - so much value in there and more than enough troops with either the Jugger Lord or Invocatus. Then it's really expanding on other elements on the army you'd like, whether that's either of the eightbound varients, adding in a rhino or two for transport, grabbing Kharn or Master of Executions. Not sure Angron is the best idea at 1k for balance, but certianly higher!

Oh for sure, lego is pretty damn expensive these days - even though that Rivendell does look incredible, I'd rather have a warhammer army instead!

I'm thinking about to start this hobby but these prices are insane for a bit of plastic..hate me for this but für 500-700 € you can get a 3d printer and print this almost for free
I can understand the point of view for 3D printing and if the models are proxies for these units, rather than exact files of GW miniatures then definietly have fun doing that. Plus decorations/accessories for your units. Loads of companies out there with some amazing 3d print STL files to use.
But I certainly don’t advocate printing GW models that are currently in production. Proxying other companies models in your own games is totally up to you though 👍

That's a whole different conversation to be fair and also depends on which hobby products people have already or if starting from scratch. But needless to say it would be a fair chunk more if they were just starting out, depeding on how people would prefer to paint (ie contrast or layering).
@@TheCommandPhase That's a fair response, but what about another video averaging out the additional cost of paints too. I bet certain armies would on average use up a lot more paint (and time, while we are estimating and summing the costs), and it would be cool to know just what one is getting themselves into when those, like myself, are considering coming back into the hobby from complete scratch. No worries at all. I guess that would depends on colour scheme and such. But I could certainly dig out the old battle ready for each armies box art scheme and add up all the prices there. “Parade” ready is another ball game entirely but a good idea, thank you! I’ll look into that as a follow up to this, once I’ve sorted the video about reducing the costs.

I've heard good things about Warpfire minis - 15% discount off RRP and free postage over $50 to anywhere in the US so that hopefully makes a little bit of difference buying models.
What about agents of the imperium
They weren’t included as they don’t have a detachment of their own and just ally into other imperium armies. Hopefully they get a detachment/codex of their own in the future. Hope that clears it up.

Having checked everything my end you are correct, alas that was what was in the list online and I should have double checked that before utilising it in this video.

Surprisingly for these lists orks weren’t quite as high as I thought, but in general terms of collecting, as many ork players like to kitbash and convert their models it would end up being a pretty expensive army to have a collection of and options. But so much fun too!

No night lords or salamanders?
So as they don’t have their own specific army books, just detachments that are part of the Space Marine Codex that resembles them and the CSM index, I picked the best performing list (or two for some variety for the vanilla Space Marines). This video was meant as a guideline to how much a well rounded list would cost for the overall factions.
With the current edition you are able to paint up the models to be any chapter you’d like and be able to choose any of the available detachments that army has access to.

To be fair you can make each army a lot cheaper depeding how you end up building it so I wouldn't worry. Besides they do look amazing!
I can print a 3000 point army for $30-60 bucks plus a couple of dollars more for consumables like IPA, globes, masks, fep sheets, shop towels and electric on my 2 3d printers. I'm never giving GW a large chunk of change for anything anymore. I might buy the rules and a few accessories occasionally but nothing more. I play other games like Stargrave and Kings of War so I like my minis to be a bit more agnostic these days anyway originally driven by GW horrible business practice. Their loss, my gain. I don't play in sanctioned games or stores so it doesn't affect me a single bit. GW fan tools don't want to play with me? All the better 😂
Huge mistake building an army off a tourney list
Don't wrry I'm not advocating anyone to build an army based off a tournament list. This was a way for me to get a realistic price for a good well rounded force on the tabletop (at the time), rather than the cheapest way possible.

That is something that could do done - maybe as a retrospective before each dataslate or start of each year potentially.
Something I’d like to look into is how army prices/sizes have changed over the years if I can find the relevant data.

The honest answer is I'm not 100% sure. There are a fair number of game stores that do international shipping - wayland games here in the UK I believe is one of them, but that being said I don't know how much shipping would cost alongside any other charges. Some people also utilise a ship forwarding service, which may be able to get the products to you at a reasonable cost.
I will assume directly from Warhammer don't ship it to you as they have a "rest of the world" option on the webstore?

You can literally get a complete Resin 3D printer setup for less than a single 2000 points army.

Rules that get constantly updated and changed yet still desperatly trying to sell you rulebooks that are outdated 4 weeks after being printed. The app is at a price point that is simply ridiculous.

I was really happy to see the free rules at the start of 10th, but almost feel codex’s should just be for the fluff/collection and the rules even up being free for all. In the grand scheme of things it’s probably not close to their biggest money maker.

I'm good thanks - I'm in the same boat as you really not having done much hobbying recently. But as I got today's video done early and scheduled ready for this evening I'm treating myself to getting in a little painting this afternoon. Just try to get little bits in when I can.
3D printing should scare GW and their lemming fanboys.
Maybe one day, but I can't imagine that vast majority of hobbyists would want to get into 3d printing right off the bat. I'm certainly not an advocate for printing existing models that are currently being sold. Custom decorative elements, or long out of print models is a different story.
