As some who grew up around horses, you are 100% correct. Horses are naturally skidding creatures and it was apparently an idiot who has never met a horse who decided they should be used for crowd control
Yeah, people who know their horse can be running around, being loud, walking riund their tail, but thats just cause you know the horse, and the horse is cool with you around them, the horse thinks youre another horse essentially, but in these types of scenarios,the horse thinks it's being surrounded by dogs, or mountain lions, or some other predator animal

Horses were utilized in wars as late as WW2. People have always ridden them into battle where they died like the soldiers died, they got impaled, cut, shot and bombed, so horses can be useful in extreme situations even though they are skittish animals. Nevertheless, I agree that today it's not a smart idea to still use them for crowd control when we don't have to. It's dangerous for the horses, the officers and the public.
You can climb over a police cruiser. You can't climb over a horse. You can't get a cruiser thru a packed crowd. You can get a horse thru a crowd. And some horses are skittish. Others are just fine for violence and chaos.

Unnecessarily harming an animal is uncool. But if an animal attacks you, you're completely justified in protecting yourself. Scaring away a horse who is currently committing an act of violence is completely reasonable.
Police bringing horses and dogs into violent confrontation. Are responsible for the animals suffering. Not the people protecting themselfs from the animals.

If a cop brings a horse to control a crowd, they do not care about the horse. Crowds are scary and dangerous, especially if everyone moves in one direction. The second a horse is brought into danger needlessly (they could have used cars or bikes or ANYTHING BESIDES SENTIENT BEINGS), it is cruel.
In the US we don't have police horses (as far as I know?), but we have police dogs who temd to be poorly trained. I have a service dog, and in the service animal community we avoid police dogs whenever we can. It's less likely that a police dog will be calm around our dogs and more likely that the police dog might bark at or even attack our medically required dog.
PS- Service dogs are what we call assistance dogs :)
Yeah we have police dogs here too. Tbf the whole thing is unethical because they are literally putting the dogs in harms way, attacking people with the dogs... like the dog is a weapon and could be a deadly weapon but a person trying to defend themselves, if they hurt the dog then they could get in trouble for hurting a police officer... i love dogs but if one is biting me, you better believe im gonna be trying to kick it away. And the dogs often attack much longer than they are supposed to, even when called back but also police dont always call them back when they are meant to. Its just all very wrong.

One of my great grandfathers was a policeman on horseback in Philadelphia. It’s less common now, probably for all the reasons mentioned above.
There are police horses, but I’ve never seen them actually get used. I’ve been to a police horse stable and seen some, but they were mostly just hanging out in the pasture or stables.

in regards to horses being used by cops, as a horse person i think it’s a abuse of power tbh. i feel like it’s so thoughtless to use animals as a power tactic to scare people, especially horses. even calm horses will STILL be very sensitive animals, and they will act in dangerous ways for the horse, the people around them and the rider. i don’t know what training the cops get about horse safety but the crowds will likely not have any. it’s literally dangerous for everyone when on earth would that ever go well? police just seem to choose any dangerous option to deal with protests and corrupting the peacefulness of them.

As a former horse girl, yes all horses are female cats. They are scared of *everything* and will run from it as fast as they can. That's their entire evolutionary strategy.

As a lifelong street activist who watched someone get horse stomped into permanent brain damage at an ACT UP protest, I agree 100% with your premises. But getting into a back and forth on Facebook like that is ill advised. No one is really having their mind changed at that point. I post a lot of controversial political issues and encourage people of divergent views to participate, but I have a couple of rules. No vulgarity, no profanity, don't take too much real estate and don't repeat yourself.
Fun fact: you cannot be done for drink driving on a horse.
Fun extra fact: in Australia, you actually *can* get done for drink driving on a horse! It can be up to a $4000 fine and/or nine months in jail.
Just about everywhere in the US it is unlawful to my knowledge, which is over 50 years worth of knowledge.
In canada they have a little extra "public drunkenness" law in case the horse riding isn't covered.

In my city, police horses are used in like, parks and stuff, where you can't drive a car, so the police can get around more. I have also seen them on Oktoberfest and was surprised how chill they were. Granted, they were just standing around and occasionally moving spots to look out, no driving into the crowd

Horses should not be used for anything that can be dangerous to them. Horses are more important than humans in my opinion. I hate that people are using horses to attack people both physically and ideologically. Horses are innocent and don’t need to be involved in human affairs. to be fair, in canada, horse mounted police are used mainly for events like an escort and security. Basically saying "we're here to just follow this sanctioned event/march, make sure no one who is against that movement attacks the parading party", I feel like horse mounted police in canada are seen as the more friendly police ect.
