In this video, I will take a close look at the Derwent Procolour pencils and see how they stack up for adult coloring. These pencils have not gotten a ton of attention from the art or adult coloring community, so does that mean there is a problem with them? I'll put them to the test and give you an honest review.
First, I'll examine the quality of the pencils themselves. How well do they sharpen? How's the pigment? What about the texture? We'll cover all of these factors and more.
Then, I'll use my self-made test sheet to show you some of the unique aspects of these pencils while also showing some finished pages done with them.
Finally, I'll give my overall thoughts on the Derwent Procolour pencils and whether or not they're worth the price tag.
Whether you're an avid adult coloring enthusiast or just curious about trying out a new brand of pencils, this video has everything you need to know about the Derwent Procolour pencils.
So sit back, grab your own set of pencils if you have them, and join me for the ultimate review of the Derwent Procolour pencils for adult coloring.

I love my Procolours! Astonishingly, they work well in R.J.Hampson’s books. I use mine in tandem with my Coloursofts. I also love the finish they leave on the page. They aren’t the hardest pencils I own. The hardest ones I own are my Uni Poscas. My favorite colors in the Procolour line are Burnt Carmine and Blue Gray. But I also love the greens and golds. And when I use them, I layer, and layer. Colors are exquisite.
You know, that is true. I have used my Proclour on Createspace paper and they do quite well. It's weird haha
Hi Kori, I had the same experience! I purchased these when they launched (yeah, I had them for years), tried in some Johanna Basford books and they layed down so awful I didn't touch them again. Now years later I gained so much more knowledge about pencils and papers that I decided to take them out again and test them on different papers and I was amazed how awesome they performed! I'm definitely a layerer and I learned now to use them correctly. So happy and grateful I didn't give them away! Glad you have come to like them too :)
Ah yea, if you layer, these are like a dream. If you can't stand layering, oof these are awful.
Yes I do!! I've just finished some Green hair! Love it! I'll be buying some more. 😁
Glad that you have come to like these ! I have had mine for about 4 years and as I love to layer , they are amongst my favourites. I am only just now starting to appreciate prismacolours ( ha ha so opposite! 😊)
I agree they have limitations but they are a wonderful addition to one’s colouring arsenal . Great review as always !
Oh yes, they are great to pair up with other colors if you are missing some and they are so great for hair. I mean I'm not a big fan of layering outside of that, but really love these.
I just bought a few green colours to try on hair, I'm hoping that I like them! Thanks for the informative video. I've learnt so much from you. I'm watching your videos from the beginning so can't always comment. Take care, I'll be watching tomorrow as I've just got the Gnomes book! x
Hope you liked them!
Thank you for sharing your techniques with us ❤ I love all things Derwent! The Procolor pencils are some of my most favorite because of the layering capabilities!!❤
They definitely layer!
I took a break from watching coloring content, but I remember when you first started accepting the procolors! Cool to see they've become a fave!
Yea they are a go to now
Thanks for this Kori! I've been looking for a nice hard pencil for hair and have really come to enjoy layering. I think im going to get these. 🤗
You are so welcome! These are definitely meant more for fur/hair than anything else, just FYI
Thank you for sharing this review kori .. your hair looks stunning on these pages i absolutely love your work tysmfs 🥰
Awe thank you so much Emma and thank you for watching!
@@ColorfullyOptimistic your so welcome kori have a wonderful weekend 🥰
Just what I needed! Another pencil set to yearn for! So many pencils, so little room on the credit card! Lmaooo 💕
I mean if you don't plan to use them, no rush to buy them my dear.
Oh my gosh your work is absolutely beautiful! Your a very talented artist! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🌟
Thank you so much 😀You are just too sweet
This was such a pleasant surprise. They are actually one of my go to. ❤
Awe thanks for watching! I love em
Thank you for the lovely review 😍
Thank you so much for watching!
You made me do it lol. I just order the 36 set to try out. I think I have every set of Derwent pencils that they sell. My favourite are the light fast but I use them for more of expensive colouring books. I use my budget pencils for my colour books with Amazon paper.
I hope you enjoy them! They are a fun pencil to try out.
I like the colors! I also like that that layer well. Tfs
Yes these are excellent for layers!
I got a set from a charity shop for a pound and these are amazing juicy pencils that last ages I love them 😊😊😊
Oh that's awesome
Wow 😳 call me impressed. Seriously. I didn't realize how these work. Thank you for sharing ☺️ ❤😘
You are so welcome. Thank you for watching
Thank you for sharing this review! Also, I've been thinking lately about what I can do with the neon Prismas and the metallic ones that you get in the set because those are the only ones that I never get any use out of. So I just thought I'd mention it to you and see if maybe you wanna do a video for that because I don't know what to do with those pencils and I hate for them to just sit there and never get any use!
I mean there ARE uses, but I just don't like to use them. I do have a few color combos that utilize the neons and metallics, but I can't say I love the way they turn out ha
@@ColorfullyOptimistic Yea I totally understand! The only idea I have is to use them as a highlight on the potion bottles. That's all I can come up with lol! But someone told me that they saw a dragon that someone colored and used the neon pink with blue and purple and it turned out good. I'd have to practice using them with different colors and see what I can come up with!
Hi Kori, I love the color range of the Procolour, except they could get rid of a couple of the yellows and give us some pinks, that’s the only flaw I saw with the color range. I purchased these pencils once and I tried to use them and I sent them back the same day, because of my hands, I just can’t use them, plus I am an old lady and it would take me forever to do 10-15 layers Lol. I do appreciate your review, it was excellent, as always!
Yes, more pink would be great! When I go to make pink hair colors I supplement from Polychromos or Black Widows the shades I'm missing.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic I will do that too, use other colors from different sets of pencils to get the color I need. I am not afraid of mixing pencil sets like some.
Thanks for Sharing
Hello Kori. Thankyou for this. May I ask you where you get your colour charts that you use for your swatching. Love the Procolours they are really lovely used with the Coloursoft.Kori the colour chart I am referring to is the chart with the large square in your file with the blue rings. Your work is beautiful🌸🌸
Those charts are from Mystic Sparkle Wings on DeviantArt. She gives them away for free.
I have these pencils and use them occasionally with the Coloursoft pencils, but I have been using also the Crayola and Amazon Basics which are also a hard pencil and do much the same thing for a greatly reduced price, so if you are battling with the cost of these pencils and it’s purely for your own use in colouring books and PDFs try these budget pencils.
So I have Crayola and Amazon and they don't perform like these. They are great budget pencils for sure but when it comes to creating hair or fine details with layers these will still do much better and it's important to note that. Not that the budget ones are awful by any means
Im really interested in trying these when I can afford to get them! I really want to do more portraits and I have quite a few portraits already printed out on strathmore colored pencil paper
Just get a few open stock first rather than the full 72 so you can make sure you even like the way they feel
@@ColorfullyOptimistic ok!
hello Kori! Thank you very much for your video! I 'd like to buy some Procolor pencils for coloring blondie hair the same way as you. Can you please answer which number of colors did you use for coloring a picture that you mention at 7:00 minute ?
I agree with the Metallics and honestly derwent is so good for that, I ordered the lightfast set btw, I sold some pieces and I splurged! Haha. But worth it. I wish faber castell did the same with their polychromos. Derwent doesn't waste time on Metallics. Lightfast set doesn't have them either. (Thank goodness) it's a waste.
Well if they put one in the lightfast set it wouldn't be lightfast :). But yes, I agree, they don't waste spaces on meetallics which is nice. They did add them to Chromaflow, but sigh, oh well
@Colorfully Optimistic I mean, true 😂 but it's still appreciated. I love faber castell to death, always have, fangirl here forever since I started drawing when I was young, but damn I wish they'd remove them from the polychromos line and replace them with more neutrals :( I haven't tried the chromoflow
I had a huge disappointment today, I ordered an open stock Procolour Chinese white pencil from Amazon. When I got it today, it says Derwent Procolour on it but it is only marked white 72. I didn't think Derwent Procolour even had just a regular white pencil? Anyways I called Amazon and told them to come pick it back up because the company Elf something falsely advertised. They told me I could keep it and they refunded my money instantly.
Ooooh I wouldn't buy open stock on Amazon -- you'll be overpaying a ton and well, most likely not getting the real product. Is there a reason you ordered it from Amazon?
@@ColorfullyOptimistic well I get free shipping lol I don't get free shipping on Blicks unless I order 60 dollars worth of stuff. I did find out though that derwent dropped the word Chinese off of their pencils so I ended up getting the right pencil lol
These seem to have similar colors to the chromaflow. They only have 2 pinks also. Too many oranges instead of yellows in this set though.
Sort of, yes, and no. Most Derwent lines have similar colors if you compare them. They repurpose pigments :).
I love Derwent pencils. Sadly I can't find them openstock locally. The thing with Derwent is they do have metallic pencils. 20 to be exact. It was to replace their older water soluble ones. I have a whole video comparing the 2.i love their newer metallic set. I assume them having an entirely seperate metallic line would be why they don't have them in their normal sets. If ppl want the Metallics they can buy the set. Good to know these are harder. I was curious about these ones. One of the few Derwent sets I don't own yet. Maybe be something to reconsider as I do love my polychromos.
So, when I talked about metallics, I meant wasting space in their sets, specifically this one. You have 72 Proclours and it was nice that Derwent didn't waste one of those slots with a metallic. I know they have metallic in general :) They did put metallics in Chromaflow, so I'm not sure their thinking.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic can't bring myself to try Chromoflow. They cost a lot more than some of the other sets and I dunno still kinda jaded on how they were released lol. We couldn't even buy them here til recently. Though I hear they are supposedly similar to prisma? Sucks if they put Metallics in it though.
I’ve heard that these scan well?
Like scanning the image into the computer? I'm not sure...I haven't tried myself :)
@@ColorfullyOptimistic yes, correct. I saw a reviewer who is an illustrator and was commenting how well these scan / keep their color. I usually don’t scan my work, though it would make sense why they named them “pro”color.
I want one but it is very expensive 😭
They are pricey, but definitely not the most expensive out there :)
