Three years on and this review still gave me all the information I needed. I want something softer than my Lyra poly colour but harder than the prismacolor. I want an all rounder for colouring, and to get back into drawing. Thanks.
Now that I’ve used these I can’t go back to even the best budget friendly pencils. Never the same again. My pencil hunt is officially over. Thank Goodness!!! I’ve got at least 25 plus sets searching endlessly for the perfect pencil. I’m torn still between my beloved lightfasts.
Awesome review, thank you so much! Would have to wait until they are available here in South Africa. Derwent is my go to for almost every medium as they are affordable and like you said the open stock availability is a plus point. Did not know that they launched these new colour pencils and am happy to hear about it
Such a beautiful line of coloring pencils. One of my favorite things when buying color pencils, is the presentation, because it contributes to the delicate handling of the tools we use to create art. I love it that they are in a tin package, and that you describe the pencils themselves as well. Thank you for that, and for demonstrating your experience by showing us some of your art pieces. This was a very informative review. I enjoyed seeing the demonstration of the product.
Thank you kindly for this preview review. I am keen to try these because Derwent avoids latex and soy, which I am allergic to, and I hope they blend nicely, especially without solvents or burnishing really hard.
fabulous pencil review! Bravo Harry! I'm not really a fan of Derwent due to the hardness of the leads & the squeaky sound on the paper, but these seem to be great especially with the light fast rating included. I really appreciate that u included the sharpener u used on these. I was like "wow what a point" & wondered which sharpener u used. I look forward to seeing the review in the magazine! I will share this video w/my audience! thanx a bunch
Thanks for all your reviews! I'm also interested on how they compare to the Polychromos. I was excited to see and hear about these pencils first in your channel! Keep up the good work!
So glad you did this youtube. Thank you because I am a Copic colorist and wanting to get into pencils and appreciate watching how they are to be used...
I love the brightness of these colours, it stands out even just watching your video! In love with them, I hope some days I will be able to buy a full set
I love my Derwent Artist and Coloursoft pencils and can't wait to get this new set! Thank you for showing them to us, hope they get here to USA fast! I want them now!
jannek123 if you love the Artists and Coloursoft, you are going to just love these. The ProColour are like combining the Artists and Coloursoft into one pencil, honestly they are gorgeous. Thank you so much for stopping by the channel and supporting me.
I had no idea these were in the pipeline! They look lovely. I like to support Derwent and I like the Artist range on proper paper, so these will definitely have to be living in my house at some point. Christmas is a likely candidate I think. Thanks for the great review. I love your flower. It is so vibrant.
Hi Harry, I'm a new subscriber but have watched many of your lovely videos for awhile now and I'm really new to doing art. I have become somewhat addicted to coloured pencils and have a lot of the Derwent sets. I know that this is a review of the Procolour but just let me mention something about the Artist set as you mentioned towards the end of your review. I'm glad to find an artist who also loves the Artist set. It was your review some months back that made me buy the full set of The Artist pencils. Really! To me they are totally unique in the way they lay down and I love the subtlety of their effect. So I'm looking forward to getting the procolour and comparing the two sets but alas I will then be so poor I will have to beg on the streets. Lol. Cheers to you and best wishes. Thank you for all that you do to inspire people like me!
I received a small 6 pencils set and fell in love with them! Beautiful color, nice feel and good layering with the ProColour. I can't wait to get my hands on a bigger set!!
My cousin gave me his 12 pc. Derwent watercolor pencils a few years ago and it was my first time using a Derwent product. The colors are really lovely. I hope ProColour comes here in our country soon. I want this as my second use of Derwent! Definitely on top of my wishlist. Thank you for this review!
Thank you for this review. I am new to colored pencils. I am really excited about this set. Thank you for telling about the light fast rating. The light fast is very important to me. Thank you for showing your flower and for showing how they shade.
I have used Derwent products for years and have never found anything I did not like, some are more chalenging than others but this provides an oppertunity for artistic growth by learning how to adapt, great review thanks
I really like the way you can work with these pencils. I have always worked in oil paints but it is effecting my asthma so I can only paint outside. I think the the Procolour pencils could be just what I need to be able to get back to the comforts of indoors.
I've heard a lot of good things about these pencils and am anxious to try them for myself. Looks like a great selection of colors. I like that they will be open stock, too.
Thanks for your review!I found really helpful that you tried them in different papers, specially in the black one, which I found very inspiring. The colors really work well on that one .I definitely have to try those pencils.
Such a detailed and thorough review. You answered all my questions re:open stock, lightfastness, etc. I think your comment about having the lightfast rating on the pencil is a well though out addition!
Hi! I'm just starting my journey to colored pencil art, and I want to thank The art Gear Guide for all the reviews! Because of this channel, I subscribed to the Colored Pencil Magazine, watched other reviews in this channel, and subscribed to the channel itself; the channel is a great source for researching and learning about different media, no matter if one is a beginner or a professional; I bumped into this channel because I wanted to research on a new set of pencils I got, and I was gladly surprised by the objective reviews that The Art Gear Guide artist does on very different art media and brands. Thanks a lot for the dedication, the honesty, and the guidance.
C S thank you so very much for your kind words and please call me Harry. I am so glad that you have started your journey to Colored Pencils I am sure you will love the medium. Also I am so glad you checked out Colored Pencil Magazine, there is so much awesome content jam packed with fantastic tutorials, tips and featured artists works. I'm so pleased you have found the channel helpful.
The Art Gear Guide Hi Harry, right after I wrote my comment, your video on the review of the Irojiten pencils caught my eye... I haven't watched the complete video yet, because I want to do so while holding the pencils! I watched the intro of the video, where you said that all colored pencils artists should have a set, and I happen to have my sets (alas, I am not an artist, I just love art), and it will be awesome to watch your review while looking at the pencils! Once I get some experience with colored pencils, I will start to use them; it is quite difficult to acquire the complete library, and those colors are expensive over here (USA). I must add this: to me, those pencils mean more than just colored pencils. They are beautiful and elegant, and just staring at them (they are, per se, pieces of art), touching them, and even reading the names of those colors constitute a therapy for the soul, and the eyes. And they bring back the happy memories of how I got to put my paws on them... Thanks again for your work, and professionalism!
Thank you for this fabulous review. You certainly have sold me on these pencils. I think I will love these pencils.. As soon as I hear they are waxed based, my ears pick up. By the by, I love your artwork.
Thank you so much for your review! I am waiting for the Procolour to become available via the retailers in the US that I buy from so I can purchase them. They look lovely.
Thx, Harry! Great review. I finally got my Artists set, but now I want these as well! Well, maybe I'll win a set. My hubby would love that! He says I have more art supplies than he has tools, and that's saying something! Of course, he's right, but you never know which way the spirits will guide you. I may feel like using oil pencils one day and Inktense the next!! Thanks again for the great info!
Great review as usual. I never get tired of watching reviews about products I don't know about and that I'm too poor to buy haha. Would love to get my hands on some of these.
These look like really cool pencils! I like the ease with which you were able to blend the colors and how vibrant they appeared on the black surface. Can't wait to try them for myself!
Oh my, these look fantastic...can't wait to buy some! Thank you so much for your wonderful, honest review The Art Gear Guide! I just found you not too long ago but love your videos and your art work, you're very talented!!
Thanks so much for the great review! I love and have sets of the Derwent Inktense Blocks and Pencils...would absolutely love to have these as well. What do you think of the twenty-four count Tin? Please let us know when they will be available in the USA...
I love my Derwents, I have Inktense, Artist and Coloursoft collections, so can see where the Procolour will fit in the range. I think my only problem will be that lightfastness is still such an issue, I downloaded the colour range sheet and the lightfastness didn't appear to be as good as the Coloursoft. Luckily, I'm on an amateur and draw and colour for my own pleasure so not a big issue. Thank you for the great and very comprehensive review. :)
I’ve been doing so much research on which pencils to buy and this was on my list, you’ve answered all my questions, THANK YOU! It sounds perfect for me and they’re made in Britain, which keeps some of our jobs safe. X
Hi Carol. Thank you so much for your kind comments. If you don’t mind me asking, what are you wanting to do with your pencils, what type of art do you prefer drawing? Portraiture, Botanical, wild life etc or do you prefer adult colouring book art which is so popular at the minute.
@@TheArtGearGuide I’m just getting back into art again after many years, I’m paint generally in watercolour and have Caran d’Ache Supercolour soft which are water soluble. I was wanting a crayon that wasn’t watercolour soluble mainly to draw wildlife, botanical and still life, not too soft but not too hard either but able to blend. Thank you for your interest and advice. X
I've yet to get my hands on any Derwent's to try, I'm not a huge fan of the harder pencils so with those being in the mid-range they'd be interesting to give a test run with.
I really enjoyed the information on the new Derwent Procolour. I'm so tempted to buy them to try. They seem to be really superior except the ones that aren't light fast.
Thank you for this review, I tend to stick with gel pens and markers, but I am looking for more diversity in colors and this is a great place to start. Again thanks for the review.
Great review! I love the layering capabilities and vivid colors of these pencils! My only concerns is that I've seen in other reviews that there's a good range of these pencils that aren't lightfast smh. For someone who plans on selling original art this is not good and limits the usability of these pencils sigh. That being said I may still go ahead and get some of the more lightfast ones of this set to combine with some of my other pencils. Once again great review!
Hi Harry, thanks for another great review. I'm always interested to see the performance on various papers. I have more or less decided I like the Koh-i-Noor Polycolor best, but apart from the Coloursoft line, I do love Derwent products, so I can't wait to see these Procolours here in Western Canada. We are afflicted by Too Much Choice, aren't we! Maybe I'll go back to drawing with a carpenter's pencil on recycled brown wrapping paper ...
Hi Harry, another great review. Man oh man the colored pencil world has been on the edge of their seat waiting for these pencils, they were so cloaked in secrecy. Derwent has "teased" us all with these pencils. i'm happy to hear that you like them, sounds like they were worth waiting for. Derwent Artist's and Coloursoft are some of my favorite pencils, so i'm glad these Procolour are the middle. Boy the point you got on those were great, and love the fact that they don't just crumble when put to task. So glad that there is some sort of timeline when we can get our grubby little paws on these pencils!!!!! Thanks again and take care. Peace
Derwent never fail to amaze me with their wonderful product range. I am so glad you have tested these as I've been dying to know what they are like. I'm also pleased they will sell them open stock as I tend to buy my pencils individually in order to try them out. I shall be counting the days until I can buy one, or two..or 10 lol.
Jane Metcalfe thank you so much Jane, I think there are one or two online shops selling them now, but I'm not sure if they have them open stock yet. Thank you so much Jane for stopping by and for your wonderful support.
The more Brits that test Derwent stuff the better.👍 There is lady I follow who just so happens to live around the corner from the Derwent factory. She tends to buy sets so you can imagine how excited she's gonna be, knowing there's something else can add to her immense collection. No doubt she will test them too. More the merrier I say.✏️
I tried the ProColour Primary Red Coloured pencil I received in Colored Pencil Magazine and I was very impressed. Nice point, held well, no grittiness when laying down color. I will have to see if I can get more colors and try a whole project with them.
Thank you for this video. It was very informative. Adding to your explanation about Blue Wool lightfastness. I remember reading somewhere that 6-8 is supposed to be ASTM I and II, which is lightfast. 4 and 5 being the rather mediocre ASTM III. And anything lower is considered not lightfast. However, 4 years ago I drew a horse with Derwent Artists using a lot of LF3 brown. It's hanging behind perspex in my parents' living room and there has been no visible change in colour so far.
I love the art, and the way the colored pencil looks. I would love to get a set of these. Your videos are great, and information. I am glad to know that it works with Bristol. I have so much.
Another wonderful in-depth review Harry! First time I have seen these, I knew they were being released and I'm glad you got sent a set to demonstrate for us, they look super nice, I'm going to give these a try, thanks again for another top review! take care my friend:)
Loved your video !!! I have not tried these pencils. They sound wonderful. Thanks for all the information. Is there a set of watercolor pencils that come with a carry all bag? I would really enjoy a set to try!
Thank you for the information. I'd like to try a few of these pencils. Do you know if they will be sold in open stock? There are so many great color pencils out there that it is nice to be able to select a few from different sets especially when the different sets have such an extensive color range.
Not sure if I commented before, but just to let you know I really like the sound of these pencils and glad to see a few more subtle colours from the Derwent Artists range amongst them
Thank you for the very thorough review. I've never tried Derwent before. I've only had a dinky 12-color set from when I was a child, and now as an adult, I just bought the budget Marco Raffine set to use in my coloring books and other crafts. Wow, these look great on the Strathmore paper (and it's waaayyy better than anything i could do at this point!)
I am a big fan of everything Derwent so was interested to watch your review of the new Procolour pencils. Money is always tight when you rescue animals so it is nice to find out as much as possible before buying new art products. I am glad you discussed light fastness and explained the Derwent system.
I've been trying to find my favorite colored pencil lately (in the form of buying one from literally every brand/line I can find) to pick one main kind to invest in a full set of, so I definitely need to try these out! They look great from what you've shown - a few different colored pencil lines from Derwent have made it into my top 10 so far, and these look like they'll end up there too!
capyboppy yea they were on sale the day of the Derwent Museum Official Opening, which I thought really odd as we were originally told under no circumstances can reviews go out before Patchings Festival because they didn't want customers getting annoyed at reviews being out there but unable to buy them, which made sense. When I seen them at the Museum I originally thought they were just PreOrder but later found out that was the only place they were being sold, but you had to go there, they couldn't be sent out. A lot of things have changed along the way with regards release dates etc and for me personally it's been about doing exactly what Derwent asked me to do. If you notice on my channel, I had a review or a new mechanical pencil that Derwent are releasing but they asked me to take it down as they had to push back the release date. It will be going back up but only when Derwent say they are selling the item. I think a couple of places online started selling them on Friday which I was a bit shocked about given the strict secrecy around the pencil. At the end of the day everyone will be able to get their hands on these awesome pencils from about now I think online. But thank you so much for letting me know this and other viewers. Thank you so much I really appreciate that you guys help me so much, without all of you guys helping me my reviews wouldn't be anywhere near as good as they are.
capyboppy yeah Derwent wanted to control the release of this which I completely understand, the ProColour I think is going to be their biggest seller this financial year.
Thank you for the review on the colour pencils. I would love to own a full set of Derwent Pencils, always wanted a full set ever since I was at High School. Love Derwent and these sound amazing. Di.
WOW. Just wow. The colors were so vibrant on the Strathmore! :-O Gorgeous work, and I'm very interested in these pencils. Wonder if they'll be affordable here in the US?
Thank you Harry for another great review. I always look forward to colored pencil reviews and yours in particular. These pencils would be a great set to have but I'm not rich either and can only hope to win them or receive them as a gift. Keep up the great reviews!
Great review! I appreciate all the information on these new pencils. Wow! In addition, I am thrilled about the possibility of actually winning a set of these awesome pencils. Thank you for the review, and for this opportunity!!
Saw your video linked by someone in a colouring group so you're the first one I see do a review on these gorgeous pencils! Thank you!! I've never owned a full set of pencils before, I always go for a medium size set then get the ones I want the most open stock. But I've decided I want the full set of these so Operation Heavy Hinting to Family for Christmas is now commencing! 😁
esoparduc I think that is an outstanding idea, you should also get your friends to help in the Christmas gift hinting, I find that helps my kids and me with my wife a lot lol. I wish I was rich because I would love to buy a full 72 set for all of my subscribers. If I win the lottery it will be one of the first things I buy.
@@TheArtGearGuide I know that comment of yours is one year old, but I just want to tell you that that was the sweetest thing, and made me feel as happy as I actually received the 72 procolour set. (I hope I worded my thoughts correctly, my english is quite bad)
kamisha that is a really tough question, let me try them both out today and work really close with them with comparison in mind. Normally when I am reviewing a companies product, I try not to mention other companies and keep the review all about that particular company. However, I am going to be starting a series of videos with just comparison in mind, comparing all sorts of pencils to each other, starting with a comparison of almost 15 white pencils from different companies on black paper.
Why must they make so many lovely products? I hope my local craft store carries these. So far it's just prismacolor and derwent colour soft. Sometimes koh-i-noor polycolor 12, so I grabbed those when I had the chance, but I want to try them all.
I love Derwent products and have their Watercolour, Coloursoft and Inktense ranges. Looking forward to buying (or maybe winning??) some of the Procolour range. :) Great review, thank you!
I have watched more than one review on these, and I have to say I am a fan already! Hope they are not as pricey as some of the other reviews have mentioned...
I'm pretty excited about these pencils. Can you tell us if the colors in the set match their other lines such as the inktense blocks? Thanks so much for testing on different papers too!
Alicia Hadden Hi Alicia, that is an awesome question and one I look through right now and give you an answer to in the morning. It's 23:30 at the minute and I'm too tired to go through them all but what an excellent question. I'll definitely have an answer for you in the morning.
Alicia, hi...That's a great question. That is one thing I love about Derwent pencils, that you can switch between the different lines of their pencils and you know the colors are the same.
awesome... thanks for your review on those pencils... I was not sure about buying these procolor pencils till I watched your review that makes me wanting to buy me a set ....
Angela Brown If you have ever used Derwents Coloursoft or Artists I would say go for it and get the largest set you can afford. If you have never used any Derwent pencils then I would certainly suggest buying a few open stock pencils first. That way you get to use them before investing a lot of money. Thank you so much for you comment and for stopping by. Thank you so much.
Would love to test drive these pencils. Love that they are a cross between the Coloursoft and the Artists. Looking forward to adding them to my supplies!
Great review! I'm just relearning the different brands of colored pencils available & appreciate the insight of other artists opinions & experiences with them. A quick question though: what do you use to 'seal' your finished colored pencil artwork?
Three years on and this review still gave me all the information I needed. I want something softer than my Lyra poly colour but harder than the prismacolor. I want an all rounder for colouring, and to get back into drawing. Thanks.

I've yet to get my hands on any Derwent's to try, I'm not a huge fan of the harder pencils so with those being in the mid-range they'd be interesting to give a test run with.
Thanks for the review. I heard these were great for blending with Gamsol or similar solvents.
I really enjoyed the information on the new Derwent Procolour. I'm so tempted to buy them to try. They seem to be really superior except the ones that aren't light fast.
You do the best reviews! I always get the colored pencil magazine as well, I can't wait to buy these. Thanks for the great review as always!
Lynn L thank you so much Lynn for such a lovely comment.
another great review Harry...love Derwent Artist and Colorsoft ,would be good to test these out too.
I'm very excited to try these pencils. I would love to see a comparison video in the future. Thank you for your great review!
More the merrier I say.✏️
fantastic review Harry I have just received a 72 set of these haven't used them yet though and like you I love my Artist's set also.
Wow! When I saw a brand new post for new products of Derwent, I was very curious to find out about these. They are a very interesting product!
I tried the ProColour Primary Red Coloured pencil I received in Colored Pencil Magazine and I was very impressed. Nice point, held well, no grittiness when laying down color. I will have to see if I can get more colors and try a whole project with them.
Very interesting. Great review. Will look for them when they are available in the US. Would really like a full set to use. Thank you for the review.
Thanks for the review! It really helps to hear an opinion of a reputable guide prior to spending money.
Excellent selection of colors. Great review, especially the lightfastness info. Thanks!!!!
These look really very interesting. It's very generous of you to do a giveaway with them - would be fantastic to try them! Great review as always :)
I have derwent color soft and inktense pencils. It sounds like I might start saving for these pencils also. Thanks for the great review.
I already have the full set of artists, some coloursoft, studio and inktense. But these look amazing. Thanks for the review. Yhey are on my wishlist
Harry, the larger sets have been available at The Pencil Museum. We went just over a week ago and they were for sale in the Museum shop.
capyboppy yea they were on sale the day of the Derwent Museum Official Opening, which I thought really odd as we were originally told under no circumstances can reviews go out before Patchings Festival because they didn't want customers getting annoyed at reviews being out there but unable to buy them, which made sense.
The Art Gear Guide Thanks for the feedback and extra info Harry. I didn't realise there was so much involved with privacy and release dates etc.
capyboppy yeah Derwent wanted to control the release of this which I completely understand, the ProColour I think is going to be their biggest seller this financial year.
Just when I thought I had all the good colored pencils... wondering if these are similar to Polychromos? Thanks for the review!
These are going to be my next set of pencils. I love your reviews and the information you share with all of us. Keep on teaching us !!
Beth Hovey thank you so much Beth for your very kind comment and support. Thank you
Thank you for the review on the colour pencils. I would love to own a full set of Derwent Pencils, always wanted a full set ever since I was at High School. Love Derwent and these sound amazing. Di.
WOW. Just wow. The colors were so vibrant on the Strathmore! :-O
Gorgeous work, and I'm very interested in these pencils. Wonder if they'll be affordable here in the US?
Wow! Great review as always, thanks Harry! Yet another "must" art supply for me LOL.
Glad to see Derwent has finally come up with a blendable pencil that competes with the farber- castel and carandache. Thanks for the review!
Another great review. The detail you give and the time you put into your reviews really pays off. Looking forward to future reviews.
The Art Gear Guide A cunning strategy! 😁
esoparduc I like your style! I hope the family get the hint.
@@TheArtGearGuide I know that comment of yours is one year old, but I just want to tell you that that was the sweetest thing, and made me feel as happy as I actually received the 72 procolour set.
(I hope I worded my thoughts correctly, my english is quite bad)
marina d'angelo thank you so much for your incredibly kind comment.
I have the Derwent color soft and wasn't at all happy with them. After watching your review I can't wait to try these pencils.
Thanks for the review. I am very curious about these pencils. Can you let us know how they compare to Faber Castell Polychromos?
kamisha that is a really tough question, let me try them both out today and work really close with them with comparison in mind.
That sounds great, I would be very interested in seeing comparisons of different pencils. I find them very helpful.
i'm just starting in colored pencils and these look like the best of both worlds. I can't wait to try these.
Thanks for the review, really interesting.I'm hoping to get to see these at Patchings in a couple of weeks.
Great to hear your thoughts on the Procolour pencils. Really look forward to testing them.
Why must they make so many lovely products? I hope my local craft store carries these. So far it's just prismacolor and derwent colour soft. Sometimes koh-i-noor polycolor 12, so I grabbed those when I had the chance, but I want to try them all.
Wow, I can't believe how nice those showed up on the black paper. I would love to give these a try
Great presentation, I am very excited to test this pencils, although I noticed it needs a lot of more colors, skin colors, set of yellows...
I'm also wondering when these will be available in the USA....looking forward to grabbing a full set of these. ❤
Looking forward to a less soft extension of the Colorsoft line.
Just saw the video of the Procolour Derwent pencils. They look fabulous! I'm hopeful that they will be available in the US soon, also.
Great review. I am wondering how they compare to Faber Castell. Something else to add to my wish list.
I would love to try these one day. So does that mean a low lightfast will fade out quickly?
The only ones I can find here is the Academy. I find them quite hard and dry. Would love to try this new range.
awesome... thanks for your review on those pencils...
These look great - I've been a fan of Derwent pencils since I was a kid. Can't wait to try these out!
Would love to test drive these pencils. Love that they are a cross between the Coloursoft and the Artists. Looking forward to adding them to my supplies!
These look awesome. Great review! I'll have to save up for these. Would love to try a few before I jump into the 72 Ct set.
Love the vibrancy of the colours in the Procolor sets! Beautiful!
Oh, quick question...did you try blending these pencils on sanded paper and powdered blender?
Great review! I'm just relearning the different brands of colored pencils available & appreciate the insight of other artists opinions & experiences with them. A quick question though: what do you use to 'seal' your finished colored pencil artwork?
