Hi, I am the proud owner of this lens - if not the only one in july 2024, at least two or max three copy in my country (Romania) - and I have to say IT IS FANTASTIC. Yes, is heavy but the image quality is excellent. Combined with the quality of the Lumix S5 II camera, the images in low light are really good. I am happy that there is a review for the L-mount platform as well
@@itsGAMiE I don't use this lens for video, is to heavy for that. I bought it just for photo. For video I use 28-70 2.8 from Sigma and Canon 16-35 f4.0 with MC-21 adapter.

Excellent review! Some reviewers are very formal, technical, and do a lot of pixel peeping, but you are more relaxed and practical, which appeals to me. Good point about Samyang being part of the L-Mount Alliance. I've been a photographer for 8 years, shooting Lumix, and always thought of Samyang as a cheap 3rd party alternative. In this case they are neither cheap nor 3rd party. Hope it goes well for them. I just bought a new camera and a new lens, so I'm gonna just watch from the sidelines for now.
I'm too busy with other things to get too technical and pixel peeping😂 I'm also one though that likes to put vintage lenses on my camera or cheap creative filters in front of my lens to mess around. Thanks for watching🙏
3:12 - FYI: If you assign the [Focus Mode] to the Panasonic DMW-RS2 Remote, it behaves in the same way as assigning to the lens button. Sony goes one step further and replicates this behaviour on any assigned function button and they give you this behaviour WHILE recording. With Lumix, you must stop recording before switching modes which is annoying.
Hey I forgot to say something else about the second button on the lens so: for what I read and saw from the FE version, that second button should be like a focus marker, if you set your focus on one point and you click it twice, then you change the focus, you can press it again and it should go back to where you set it. If I am not mistaken that is the function for it, if you try it out and it is so, could you tell me if it works like that for LUMIX too? I am not entirely sure but I think that’s how it works 🙏🏾
I use it for video on S52X and S1H and its really a beautiful lens with huge image quality. Soft and precise, I love it ! AF works very well. For MF the softness of the focus ring is a perfection. Like on the Canon L lens. Byebye the 24/105 😅
hey, to change the custom buttons in the E version you need an optional dock, that you connect to the computer and can change. For L mount I can not find it, so it may not be out yet, or maybe Lumix is working on a firmware update (which I hope) where we can do it in camera. about the 2 optional buttons, they basically do the same thing, so we will need a firmware update for that too, where we can set them separately. Just got mine and your video was super helpful, Thanks again
I like the look at f2. Is it more a dreamy look at f2 and becomes more sharp. That’s two personalities in one. Reminds me of the voigkander 40 1.2 manual focus for Nikon z mount. ❤
Thank you so much for making this review of the L mount version. I am very seriously considering this lens, but I am using an older Panasonic S body so the manual focus experience is very important to me. Does this lens support the linear focus mode setting in the menu, or changing the manual focus throw?
I forgot to mention this in the video actually. It does support linear, but there's only a couple of options for the degree of focus throw. The focus wheel also has ridges in it that's suppose to work with a motor. I haven't tried it, but yeah I think it'll be good for MF
No OIS. Depends what stabilization setting you're using but since there's no OIS you can test the stabilization just on any lens and it'll give you the same result
also "connection problem" is a common thing , reading some amazon reviews about this lens

Hello, thanks for the review! I have been waiting for that lens since I bought my S5IIX last year. I rented the lens today and it looks fantastic. My only issue is that there is no "touch MF" focus in AF mode or am I missing something?
I only wish it had lens stabilization (I am assuming it doesn't since you didn't mention it). By the way, Dustin, it would be great if you could give a shout out to the festival and the name of the band(s) that appear in your video. I am sure they would be delighted if you shared some youtube love with them.
As soon as i will have a real „Need“ for a Tele i would definetely buy this. Amazing to finally see this on L-Mount. Now i Hope Samyang will bring us some compact primes for the S9.
Just sold my S1 and S1R and got the Nikon Z8 with the Tamaron 35-150. Great lens and super sharp! Wonder if Tamaron makes it for Samyang? So similar except the Samyang price is much cheaper. BTW, you can program those buttons on the lens with the USB-C cable connected to the computer with software as well as update firmware. I probably would've considered buying this Samyang if I still had my Lumix, but with no new S1Rii or S1ii after 5 1/2 years, it was time to move on. Glad to see a new fast lens for the L mount.
Word ! Question, is there a dock or anything this lens needs to update the firmware ? Or can you just USB-C right into it, connect to the computer, and run the software update ?
@@TopshelfJuniorit the video, it looks like it has a USB-C port, so if it's like the Tamaron, you should be able to update firmware and program the buttons with the software that Samyang should provide. Sigma requires a costly dock.

Not to fixate on the semantics, but I think 1st party lens is = same brand as the camera body, what this lens is: a native lens, meaning it was tuned for L-mount, and can be used without an adapter. But it is a 3rd party lens. Thanks for the review!
I was planning to get this lens for my classroom. Also, please make a one month later, and possible 6 months later review. I’m planning on buying this lens for the next school year, not the upcoming school year. Also, I should’ve talked to you more at NAB when we were at the Blazar booth checking out the anamorphic lens. I saw how excited you were to see them. Your eyes didn’t lie bro. LOL!!!
Good lens. Technically have had it for almost a month so likely a 6 or 1 year review of sorts. Haha I was excited, but a little underwhelmed to be honest. Still cool lenses!
Today, many wide lenses are being made with the assumption that lens corrections will be applied either in camera or in post. This allows a simplified lens design. The perfect example is the Canon RF 14-35mm F4.
@@DustinArmstrongPro One other point specific to the 14-35...it is actually 12mm at the wide end, but is reduced to 14mm after the correction. Pretty smart design I think.
This is why you get older Canon EF glass which has corrective elements to minimise faults in the glass, they autofocus shockingly well on the Panasonic S bodies with the Sigma MC-21 adapter.
@@SMGJohn I actually prefer the more recent RF approach. The lenses are simpler and somewhat lighter because they don't attempt to correct everything within the lens. I find that taking advantage of the available technology to do digital correction is a smart design choice. The advantages of the RF mount, specifically when it comes to other forms of distortion, makes them superior to most EF glass.
Hello, there's a big problem with the lens. Wait for the new firmware before purchasing. The current model causes a major blackout when the lens is stopped down on all models. I have the S5, S52x, S52, and S1R, and they all have the same problem. Action shots with continuous shooting are impossible because your viewfinder remains black and the autofocus can't keep up.
I had the lens when I was still on the Sony email system. Definitely a very versatile lens however I was not happy with the build quality. Now on Elm, I ended up going with Sigma 70 to 228 to 70 combo so this lens is kinda useless. I am surprised, however you did not mention that the Sam Yang is parfocal.
I'm not sure it's technically parfocal, but it may imitate through the software that it is. I could be wrong though and they really did make it parfocal
Were those clips filmed on a gimbal or just using the camera stabilization? I’m wondering if the weight pushes the limits of a typical gimbal (DJI RSC 2, or 3, without going to “pro” models).
Had this lens on Sony and enjoyed it but the size meant it wasn’t coming anywhere that wasn’t a paid event. The amount of passers by commenting on the size of the lens was always funny to me since nobody ever comments on my big white 70-200
Size matters to the uninformed, as ridicules as it is, people are more willing to take you serious if the gear looks serious, what a world we live in. I put the battery grip on every time because I am so tired arguing with clients when they want a reduced price because the gear was not big enough LOL
Hmmmmm, interesting lens for sure !!! Already have the 24-105 F4, was thinking of also getting the 70-200 F4, but now...this Samyang is interesting. Hmmmmmm..
@@DustinArmstrongPro Indeed. I’ll probably go 70-200, keep it in the Panny family. $1000 right now but, I’ll find an open box / like new soon I’m sure.
I do also have the 24-105. For me, the 35-135 is more versatile compared to a 70-200, because you don't have to switch lenses at 70/105 mm. Perfect for events like weddings, and even for sports, where you can have the total view and the close up. Problem is only size and weight (double the 24-105, why I would stay with the 24-105 for standard photography and even the 28-200 for travel). But for events ..... perhaps next year.
@@TheRowi62 Word ! Small note, you wrote 35-135 up there but I know you meant 35-150. And I agree with you, being able to go from 35mm all the way to 150mm is pretty sick.
Did they fix the issue with the lens barrel creeping? When I've seen examples of this on the Sony version it seemed like it would make shooting with it difficult due to the zoom creep happening while trying to get a shot.
It does creep (started a few days after using it). For me it's almost a good thing, because for it not to creep out needed a really stiff zoom. But yeah, not ideal having to lock the zoom all the time
I commented on stills in the video. I even put some photo examples. There's currently an issue it seems when you take photos really fast (watch the video and I've had a couple others with the lens tell me they have the same problem) so it does work for photos, but definitely wouldn't do anything with fast moving subject where you take a lot of photos
Hi, may I know does the zoom creep matter to you? I'm a user of Peak Design capture clip and I worry that it might be a need to constantly 'lock' the lens whenever I put it on my PD capture clip.
Haha what I mean is my S5II and S5IIX are technically not production models and they have separate firmware from the production models so this is why I may have issues
It depends on the lens! Siga is first party for l-mount but there are older lenses and newer ones. Some of the older lenses are opticay superb, but slower in AF.
If they are apart of the L mount alliance they use the same protocols on the lenses as LUMIX so that's why they're considered first party. Older hardware limitations are different
If it's like the Tamaron, you update the firmware with a USB-C cable connected to your computer and download the program to update it. No dock required. The buttons can be programmed with the same program too.

Bums me out. 200$ price difference ? really ? I mean why. i thought it was more at first . still 200 is alot of money
Samyang has 10% off with code JULY10. I could buy a used 28-70mm Sigma and a 70-200 F/4 for $1400 used, or this for $1259. It makes a compelling case at that price. Losing 28-35mm and 150-200mm but gain f/2.8 from 70-150mm. But also you're forced to carry around a 2 and a half pound beast when if you got the sigma and panasonic zoom, your day to day most of the time lens is very reasonably sized and portable. But the 28-70 is not dust or weather sealed. Decisions, decisions.
@@firehorseweddingphotograph3995 the samyang slashes the tamron by around 500$ , imagine if they do that to the sigma. also a 28 is not a 24 , i dont mind the 50 to 45 though.

I told them I would like to exchange or have the lens repaired and the only option they gave me was to return it and rebuy another one. That's okay except it means I couldn't rebuy until the refund was issued and by the time it was, the lens was no longer available for the sale price I originally ordered at. I'm not playing a game of lens gambling and being made to buy again at a higher price because they sent out a bad copy the first time. Overall, a complete waste of my time and shipping costs. No problem glad I can help!
Looks like a great lens. Also, holy diffusion filter usage hahah.
I like to mess around what can I say
@@DustinArmstrongPro ain’t no shame in the pro mist filter game 👏
Hmmmmmm..
Too many choices!
Excited for this one!
😎
Did they fix the issue with the lens barrel creeping? When I've seen examples of this on the Sony version it seemed like it would make shooting with it difficult due to the zoom creep happening while trying to get a shot.
Not sure I've noticed that so far
It does creep (started a few days after using it). For me it's almost a good thing, because for it not to creep out needed a really stiff zoom. But yeah, not ideal having to lock the zoom all the time
no thoughts on how it works for stills? everyone are videographers nowadays, gosh
Does the barrel fall out when pointing it down?
Hi, may I know does the zoom creep matter to you? I'm a user of Peak Design capture clip and I worry that it might be a need to constantly 'lock' the lens whenever I put it on my PD capture clip.
Not an issue really for me. I probably wouldn't put this on a peak clip just cause it's such a big lens. Usually only do that with smaller setups
Didn't creep when it was new, but after about a week it creeps easily. So that's definitely out
At what point along the zoom range does it change from 2 to 2.8?
if im not wrong , its f2.4 by the time it hits 50mm
35 mm/2.0
42 mm/2.1
48 mm/2.2
54 mm/2.3
60 mm/2.4
66 mm/2.5
73 mm/2.6
84 mm/2.7
90-150 mm/2.8
(According my LUMIX S5IIX internal metering.)
i forgot that metering doesnt just jump from A to B ( like from 3,5 to 4 to 5,6 ) when its a variable zoom lmao
good footages except ones with pro mist filter
does this still have the same zoom creep issue that is discussed in other reviews?
Yeah it'll creep if the lens is facing down
@@DustinArmstrongPro ok thank you for confirming and quick reply.
Nice kit. Very expensive lens for no OIS. Will keep my 24-70 and 70-200.
I mean for the range and f stop though I think it's justified in my opinion
That slight little punch-in and emphasis on "because I have sample cameras from Lumix" though! 🤨🤔😂
Haha what I mean is my S5II and S5IIX are technically not production models and they have separate firmware from the production models so this is why I may have issues
in manual mode, is the focus at infinity on this lens on the right or left?
Pretty sure it's to the right. So counter clockwise will take you to infinity
Did you see the compatibility error message come up again since filming this review?
I have not
Nice review, I also am thinking about buying one with my own money.
It's pretty nice! 70-200mm I rarely use so this is a good middle ground
Great video and a cool lens
#samyanggang?
@@DustinArmstrongPro I have a S Pro 24-70 and a S Pro 70-200 so have no need for it but it’s a great focal length/aperture
Great video dustin
🙏
The Autofokus in the first Seconds is choppy as hell, jumping and searching. You notice it in the background a lot. Not a good first impression.
Very amazing lens, my type of lens. Very expensive for me but I understand why
Yep more pricey but that's just a really good range and f/stop
Do you think Sigma lenses focus as well as native glass on Lumix s5ii?
I talk about this and any lens apart of the L mount alliance in this video so not sure how you missed it
It depends on the lens! Siga is first party for l-mount but there are older lenses and newer ones. Some of the older lenses are opticay superb, but slower in AF.
If they are apart of the L mount alliance they use the same protocols on the lenses as LUMIX so that's why they're considered first party. Older hardware limitations are different
The autofocus is a bit jumpy, impressive lens though.
Yeah I saw that in the beginning. Possible it'll be adjusted via firmware too
Great review!
🙏
Do you still need the USB dock to update the firmware since it's a native lens?
Not sure to be honest
If it's like the Tamaron, you update the firmware with a USB-C cable connected to your computer and download the program to update it. No dock required. The buttons can be programmed with the same program too.
@@keithspurlock4732 There is no USB port on the Samyang 35-150 lens. And I haven't seen any Samyang dock for L-mount yet on the market.
UPDATE: I bought this lens for lumix s5iix, I gotta say it was the best purchase for my camera so far its a dream. I have the sigma 28-70 and though i love the size of that lens it just doesnt have the reach I want also I will add the samyang goes down to 2 stops which is greatly appreciated. Now that I have 7 or 8 k in L mount lenses and seeing im not a professional videographer I really hope panny releases a high megapixel beast for people that love to photograph as well as shoot video, Maybe the S1H mark ii? oh come on panny please keep us up to date with the new canon r5ii coming out. 1400 for L mount 1199for sony mount. Bums me out. 200$ price difference ? really ? I mean why. i thought it was more at first . still 200 is alot of money
The sony has been out longer. Originally it was 1400 I believe so they likely just have more on the shelf they're trying to sell
The Tamaron 35-150 2.0-2.8 Nikon is $1,999
The license price has to be regained. Or they think there are less buyers than for the E.
Dude. I didn't know Strawberry Days had a concert?!?!
My cousin is the drummer for the band haha
Samyang has 10% off with code JULY10. I could buy a used 28-70mm Sigma and a 70-200 F/4 for $1400 used, or this for $1259. It makes a compelling case at that price. Losing 28-35mm and 150-200mm but gain f/2.8 from 70-150mm. But also you're forced to carry around a 2 and a half pound beast when if you got the sigma and panasonic zoom, your day to day most of the time lens is very reasonably sized and portable. But the 28-70 is not dust or weather sealed. Decisions, decisions.
So many decisions
wish they make a 24/28-50 f2 , woule go a long way and challenge sigma.
it would also allow me to run it on a gimbal
Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8
@@firehorseweddingphotograph3995 the samyang slashes the tamron by around 500$ , imagine if they do that to the sigma.
also a 28 is not a 24 , i dont mind the 50 to 45 though.
They should copy the canon 28-70mm f2 😁
@@pedropereira5043 sony already leaked the 24-70 f2 gm , if anyone wants to test the waters its gotta be sony first
Does this lens have OIS?
No OIS
I ordered one and quickly returned it due to the entire left side of the frame always being out of focus. Definitely a defective lens.
Customer service wasn't very helpful either.
By the way, if your package gets lost in the mail on it's way to you, and you never opted to buy their own shipping insurance and tracking they offer on the site, you're out of luck. Buyer beware.
cool lens
😎
@@DustinArmstrongPro 🕉️🙏
they couldnt have started at 24mm? or better yet, 20mm?
This thing is already huge! And expensive!
I don't think that we'll see all samyang lenses. Only the special ones which sigma doesn't make or doesn't plan to make.
I doubt it. They'll probably just prioritize those lenses first, but I'm sure most will come available eventually.
Gimme a z mount
So its just a rebranded Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 LOL, they did not even bother changing the body of it.
No, it's a rebuilt, not identical. You can find several videos on this topic.
It's made in Korea, not China. And there is no USB port on Samayng.
What difference does it make if its made in Korea? Absolutely nothing, you think Korea has a higher build quality than China? LOL
@@SMGJohn LOL the difference is that your money goes to communist idiots.
Tamron doesn't make L-mount lenses, so that's irrelevant.
But, no IS.
Correct
But does pineapple go on pizza??
Helllllll no
In Germany it's one of the most preferred pizza.
do you read my mind?? How can you answer all my questions ? Are you dustinGBT?
Shhhhhhhhhh
There is of course a difference in focus between Panasonic and Sigma lenses . Sigma is 35% worse
