@Missy-24 it's just more of a Western saying, so it'd make sense (to American and Canadians) that most other countries wouldn't call other immigrants aliens
If neither of you have seen "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", that would be why you didn't get the significance of the flat-top mountain (which is a real place in Wyoming). Also, Blythe Danner (who played older Tara) bears a very strong resemblance to Melinda Dillion, who was in "Close Encounters". I suspect that was one of the reasons why Danner was in this movie.

When Jason Bateman shoots and says "It was a boring conversation anyway." Its the scene from Star Wars where Han shoots the the control panel when they are trying to break Princess Leia out.
Lorenzo's Oil is a 1992 Susan Sarandon / Nick Nolte film based on a true story about parents trying to find a treatment/cure for their son, Lorenzo, who was diagnosed with adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD). The experimental treatment that was developed for asymptomatic ALD is derived from olive oil and rapeseed oil (what we call Canola oil in the store), and was named after their child, Lorenzo Odone, thus Lorenzo's Oil.
The latino room attendant saying "What do you mean aliens??" was thinking they might have meant illegal aliens. The agent named Lorenzo Zoyle was a reference to a movie title "Lorenzo's Oil" Agent Zoyle shot the radio and said, "Boring conversation anyway" as a reference to Han Solo doing the same during the prison break in Star Wars. "I can't believe she's gone" was another Star Wars reference. The "Black Vampire" sword was a reference to the movie "Blade". Watch the book release scene at the very end of the movie closely. The agent who "perished" in the house explosion was in the audience as a very excited burn victim.
3:28 The word "alien" doesn't just refer to extraterrestrial lifeforms. It also just means something that's unknown/foreign. As such the term 'alien' is also often used for foreigners, including immigrants.
I love this movie. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are hilarious. It was the first time I (as an Aussie who didn’t really know SNL) had heard of Kristen Wiig and I thought she was hysterical in this.
Fun Fact: when Ruth asks where the 3rd guy is ("where is the other one?"), because she heard 3 voices or shows 3 shadows the day before, in the French version, she asks "where is the 3rd "type"" ("Où est le 3ème type ?") , because "type" can designate a guy, but it's is a little play on words, because "une rencontre du 3ème type" in French = "encounters of the third kind", like Spielberg's film. (logically translated into French as: "Rencontre du troisième type" for "Encounters of the Third Kind") I think it's a very good adaptation/translation. And the "Boring conversation anyway" after shooting on the radio, is a StarWars Episode IV A New Hope reference, with Han Solo in the Death Star.

finally someone who does Paul! This was one of my comfort movies back in the day and I've always wondered why no-one reacted to it. Cornetto-trilogy credit where it's due, this is still my favourite Pegg and Frost comedies!
i didn’t even realize u looked soo much like bobby lee till u said it 😭😂 now i can’t stop seeing it
25:00 - SPECIAL AGENT LORENO ZOIL - Lorenzo's Oil (1992) is a movie based on the true story of Augusto and Michaela Odone, parents who search for a cure for their son Lorenzo's adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), leading to the development of Lorenzo's oil. Starring Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon. Directed/Co-written by George Miller (Mad Max film series).
Jason Bateman in smoking aces is hilarious
So many great callbacks to other sci-fi films.
The amount of references you missed was astounding even for you guys, but still a fun watch!
There is no Edgar Wright direction but you still have the great chemistry of Simon Pegg and Nicholas Frost.
"An alien gap year? Like literal third world?"
It occurs to me a lot of your wrong guesses are great writing prompts and ideas for movies that should be made.
Eeeeekk I smashed the like button immediately and now let's see your reaction to this insanely hilarious film! YAY!
I didnt know George had a cameo in this movie! 3:42
I was actually shocked and appalled that the makers of the movie outsourced the role to an alien to play Seth Rogan! Also, it is endearing that neither one of you got the joke when the bell hop asked... "What do you mean 'aliens'?" Lorenzo's Oil was a movie (1992). And yes, please watch and react to the X-Files!
Wait a moment, wait a moment...
George doesn't know The X Files?
Kristen Wiig's father in this was in Shutter Island as Deputy Warden McPherson. He was the first person Teddy and Chuck spoke to upon arriving at the island.
The "old lady" is Blyth Danner, she is the mother of actress Gywneth Paltrow.

If you disn't get the mountain you need to watch Spielbergs Close Encounters of the Third Kind
You guys missed so many references to classic movies it made me sad. The biggest one being “boring conversation anyway”. That literally hurt. Also was a clear indication the agent is in fact a good guy.
The room service waiter said "what do you mean, 'Aliens'?" as in *illegal* aliens...😅
You should watch Game Night with Jason Bateman. It's pretty good IMO
You definitely need to see Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It came out the same year as Star Wars and Spielberg and George Lucas actually had a bet on which movie would make more.
That was really Stephen Spielberg on the phone, he did It as a favour as Pegg & Frost were also doing Tintin at the time playing Thomson & Thompson which Spielberg directed
In all realism Earth being a remote, backwards system is more likely the case.
Funny that when you said "omg i hate that guy todd" i was thinking about the other guy because he also plays todd packer in the office who is also an incredibly annoying character. So it's the team of annoying todds XD
Really, of all the people to not get the, "do you believe in aliens", "what do you mean, aliens"? joke, George you're better than that, come on!!! LMFAO!!!! Amazing how many references you guys missed, this is to Sci Fi and nerd culture, what Galaxy Quest was to Star Trek. The song in the bar is the cantina song from A New Hope, the mountain and the fireworks are a nod to Close Encounters and others have already covered Zoil shooting the car radio. Oh, and Lorenzo Zoil is a play on the movie Lorenzo's Oil.
24:57 Lorenzo's Oil is a 1992 excellent - but exhausting - drama movie by the director of the Mad Max franchise (George Miller) ; about the true story of Lorenzo Odone - it's a medical movie almost filmed like a horror movie. 🤒
