    Great video Jules, I really enjoy your videos when you're going round the bookshops, but it's always disappointing to see the lack of any vintage SF these days. It's getting harder and harder to find any in the bricks-and-mortar shops which is a real shame. Anyway, the London fair's coming up next week and I'm very excited. See you there! Cheers, Jason.

      You're right, plenty of vintage SF up for grabs next week. See you then🙂👍

    Very enjoyable video, Jules. My ideal bookshop would be the Henry Bohn one as I love that sense of disarray rather than the clinical layout of the Oxfam one.

      There was plenty there, it just needed a bit of digging through 🙂

    Very enjoyable video. I often go to Liverpool and go to all the bookshops you went to and I rarely come away empty-handed. The last time I went to Reid's I bought a copy of Andrew Michael Hurley's short story collection The Unusual Death of Julie Christie. Not a vintage book but very rare now and I only paid 3 Quid ! My favourite shop is Kernaghan Books. It's only 10-15 min walk from either Henry Bohn or Reid's and it's got a small but well chosen range of rarities.

      Great stuff, it does seem I missed out by not getting to Kernaghan Books but I did have other things to do in Liverpool as well as book hunting, lol! Next time.

    The disarray reminds me of the second hand bookstores in Los Angeles where I used to shop. Right or wrong, I always expected bigger discounts at the stores that were the most sloppy and disorganized. They weren't always a lot of fun to shop at, but then again there was a always a chance you might have missed something in the mess and maybe wouldn't go home empty handed. Not too many used bookstores here in Germany, but in the University towns there are a handful and they are pretty neat and clean for shopping, which I appreciate. The Ironbridge area looked very nice and is it really a World Heritage Site?

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  5 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Glen, you're right, the more dis-organised the shop, the more you feel like there MUST be something worthwhile hidden on the shelves. As you saw, I didn't get much but I imagine that store has a high turnover of stock. Ironbridge is a must visit and yes, it's a heritage site.

    Interesting video, thank you.
    It seems to me like Waterstones have basically become cafés that sell books rather than bookshops with cafés in them; some people seem to go there just for the coffee, which is a bit sad.
    Something similar can be said about libraries, many people only go there for the wifi now...

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  5 місяців тому +1

      You are absolutely right. This is why Waterstones got rid of all the Costa coffee shops and put in Cafe W. That is where the money is.

      Libraries? As rare as dinosaurs here in Lincolnshire. Austerity put paid to the vast majority. Not too many speciality bookshops either. Thank goodness for eBay.

    It's tragic how many fine used bookstores and new bookstores have gone belly-up due to digital books. I'm praying like a pilgrim for a backlash. Mr. Burt you've got a fine channel! I subscribed because of shout-outs from that fine fellow at Outlaw Bookseller. Not sure why I haven't subscribed sooner but there it is. Cheers.

    I find Oxfam cabinet books rather overpriced - especially when they’re in poor condition.

    • @JulesBurt
      @JulesBurt  5 місяців тому +1

      I'm in total agreement. The volunteers I'm sure do their best but most have no idea how condition affects the price. Most items are priced as if they're mint, not the hammered copies you usually find that have been donated.

    • @user-zo7mr3op8i
      @user-zo7mr3op8i 5 місяців тому +1

      It's the same in Hull.
      These shops don't realise that the Near Mint price in the guides and the price for a Good copy are a decimal point apart!
      Try buying a book of American comic reprints!
      And it seems mean to try and haggle in an Oxfam shop.
      Very frustrating.
      Having said that I picked up a coverless copy of the first Beano annual once.
      It began at page 9 and was very brittle with some scribble but all the rest of the pages were there. I bought it intending to scan some of the hand lettered titles and play around with them on 'Paint'
      The Blind Institute were having a 'Pound per bag' sale and I bunged that ropy looking book in a bag of half a dozen high grade S.F. books.
      (Actually I told them to split the books into two bags and paid £2!)
      It was only when I spotted Lord Snooty during a read through that the penny dropped and I wrote to the Beano editor at the time (Ewen Kerr) that I realised what I'd got.
      On another occasion the same shop sold me a large box of books, comics and mags which I offered £3 for.
      They were happy because some of the stuff looked "Rude" so was unsuitable to put on display.
      The "rude" mags were copies of 'OZ' in very nice nick.
      Yep! The SHOOLKIDS issue was in there!
      (I did go back to the B.I. shop later and told the assistant about that Annual and gave the assistant £20. She gave me it back saying "They won't care, love".
      Roundabouts and Swings.@@JulesBurt
