Tengu by Graham Masterton was my first paperback that really hooked me. They say an author should grab the readers attention by the first page. We'll he really achieves that with Tengu. What an opening paragraph, then page and then chapter

i just want to say, i watched this last night and really enjoyed it. Justin's fanzines have been an inspiration over the years to me - as well as costing me a fortune in buying old pulp novels! Both your enthusiasm of vintage books is marvellous to see - thank you!

This was great!! After reading his fanzines I've always wondered what he was like and I have to say, he's a lot classier than I imagined. haha. Also, I was happy to hear he was punk when he was younger. That makes sense as genre fiction is kind of punk in its accessibility.

Speaking of James Herbert, in about 1985 I remember being given a school project - writing to a famous person - and i'd just finished reading Domain so I decided to write to him. I seem to recall saying that although I enjoyed the book I felt the Rat series couldn't really go any further and I felt his enthusiasm for it had come to an end. He wrote a fantastic letter back, sent in the SAE that I'd provided, saying that he agreed with me and that he was finding it tiresome and wanted to write about something else. Unfortunately, the letter has been lost but it was really exciting at the time receiving it in the post.

Incredible. What a treasure. Of course he did go back one last time in that graphic novel, The City. Which wasn't much cop as I recall.

@@JulesBurt I didn't realise this book The City existed ! Mind you, judging by the prices I've just seen I think I'll pass on it.

Really enjoyed the video! Lots of things to add to my book hunt list. Just subscribed to the channel, and I'm loving everything about it. Being from Argentina, lots of these paperbacks are really hard to get. Just one quick note: I believe Martin Cruz Smith wrote three Nick Carter novels (The Devil's Dozen, Inca Death Squad, and Code Name: Werewolf). Vatican Vendetta was written by Snyder and Hayes. Cheers from Buenos Aires!

Brilliant interview I've been a fan of Justin's publications for a good few years now. Those fantastic spinner racks in the seventies were an entertainment in themselves. Trying to decide which book i was going to invest my hard earned 30p in usually came down to which book had the best cover, normally a Foss, Pennington or Frazetta won out.

Really enjoyed that, brought back a lot of memories of reading Richard Allen's exploitation works, Guy N Smith, Sven Hassell, 'The Rats;' and others...and I'm still selling Graham Masterton at work even now. I'll add my vote for 'The Shrinking Man' by Matheson, which I feel is equal to 'I Am Legend' plus I'll mention the two earlier versions of the film, the best one being 'The Last Man on Earth' with Vincent Price, which far outstrips 'The Omega Man' and the awful Will Smith vehicle.

I'm reading my first Lovecraft short stories, and I'm loving it. But I found The Colour Out of Space not as good as for example The Outsider and From Beyond. I found the pacing of the story a bit strange. It starts slow, in the middle there's a really fast paced bit and the end is again slow. I didn't think it was bad, but not the best Lovecraft I've read yet.
    Great video by the way.
Ordered my copy of Paperback Fanatic yesterday.
