On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

The Viggen is and always has been a monster in a one-circle for about two merges before it runs out of energy and never gets it back.
Both planes are underpowered, but the Wiggen is just made of wing area. A lot of delta aircraft were not made for dogfighting but were very good at it anyway. The F-102 and 106 were intended to fly like a Concorde but could out-turn the F-4.
Would be really cool if they added the JA37C/D Jaktviggen. More powerful engine, onboard gun and other improvements to make it more of a fighter than the AJS-37. Feel like the 37D would be really cool as it fired Swedish AMRAAMs and had a prototype Gripen cockpit. Would be pretty sweet to fly I feel

There is a misconception about the Viggen being an atack platform, it was designed as an interceptor and later repurposed. Search the story of a Viggen intercepting an SR-71.
While the Mirage F-1 was designed as a multirole.
@@luispalma6917 No, the viggen was designed as a strike airrcraft and repurposed into an interceptory not the other way around. The air to ground version entered service in 1971, the interceptor/ fighter version did not see service until 1978; 7 years during that time in aircraft development was quite a lot.

Viggen enjoys the delta wing, good AoA at slower speeds and good one circle performance for a brief time. This one obviously has a huge weakness in the shape of compressor stall but it's still capable of dogfighting inferior aircrafts. JA-37 would have a field day in the same scenario.
Fighter variant JA-37 would be great, and it fits perfectly for the new Kola Peninsula map.
Yah it would be nice to up engine and let Sven get some sleep.

Viggen gun in the JA-37 (Oerlikon KCA) uses the same shell to what's used in the Gau-8/A avenger in the A-10.
If you think the Mirage-2000 30mm is a badass, the Viggen round is 50% heavier.
The Viggen in DCS is an AJS-37, which I believe uses the same 30mms as the Saab 35 Draken, hence the gunpods.
The 30mm you’re talking about is mounted under the JA-37 to the left of centerline.
I do wish DCS would include that version in the module.

The AJS-37 was never meant for BFM, but that doesn't mean it can't do it. It's actually very capable if you can end the fight quickly (otherwise Sven will have his work cut out for him). I've actually done dogfights with my friend where he flies the Tomcat and I'm in the Viggen, and I've won. Granted, we both suck, but yeah.
I don't know why but the Sven part absolutely killed me for 10mins straight.
Unlike Jester, Sven always does his best.

When I was a boy use to build many aircraft models and I had both Viggen & Draken. I was impressed by reverse trust of J37 but was attracted by J35 looking at it from all sides trying to convince myself is no good as I know from all my reading. I ended loving the McDonald Douglas planes F-15 & F-18 both more in two seats variant and obviously the F-14. Indeed I need decades to appreciate how it looks the F-16. Now I love all "teen" aircrafts, then I used my Draken as second generation of Vipers from "Battlestar Galactica" cause of the "Space" look.

P.s.: I had to wait till Mirage 2000 to like Delta wing because F-102/F-106/Mirage III/Mirage 4000 were beautiful as A-6/A-7. I find a real beauty the F-5 Freedom Fighter but having a T-38 too I considered it a trainer, to much similar.

I’m glad people here get my subtle jokes I leave in videos here or there, lots of people miss them but some people get them and that’s worth it.
Could we please see the viggen VS the F-4 Phantom? It'd be really interesting to see how that fight could go.
And also to that "Is the viggen actually good?", I'd say yea. the JA 37 is probably far more capable with the upgraded radar, access to skyflashes, and newer engine which had more thrust and was less likely to compressor stall. The later JA 37s especially, with countermeasures. Overall it's a pretty nifty plane IMO, and it'd be awesome to see the fighter variants in DCS.

The Viggen is a tactical multirole fighter. It can intercept, dogfight, fly low,fly high, strike targets, has STOL capability. It used a huge (for the time) low bypass turbofan (JT8D) that would allow it to climb and accelerate quite well. The F1 on the other hand has a very weak turbojet, that does not suit the plane well. Also, you seem to be having problems with engine stalls and AOA in many planes. Don;t be so aggressive with the stick. If the plane does not like it, ease off a bit. Let it breathe.
It’s just the pilot I think in this fight, he could have beaten that pilot even if he was on a F35 lmao
I'm not sure I would call the Viggen a multirole fighter, at least not in the modern sense. You didn't have a single version that was good at multiple types of missions, instead the Viggen had dedicated variants: attack variant with limited air to air capability, air to air variant with some ground attack capability, reconnaissance variant, sea strike variant. It reminds me in this way of another one of its contemporaries, the Tornado, which had several specialized variants rather than being what we'd today consider true multirole capabilities.
@@razvanmazilu6284 Me? I never owned any Viggens. As for the multirole... the earlier versions of the 37 did have dedicated avionics for AA, AG or recon. With the advent of better electronics, all could be bound together in the AJS with the help of CK37. So yeah, it is a multirole platform. What do you think AJS stands for? Attack, Jakt, Spaning. The F35 is not the "only multirole" A/C FYI.
@@CMBelite-FR The pilot does make a huge difference. In the real world though, these planes were almost always used in groups, so the shortcomings of each would be mitigated.

I don't know where that F-35 remark came from, but you're gonna have a hard time making the case that the AJS 37 is a multirole fighter in any modern sense of the term when it doesn't even have an air intercept capable radar and only has basic WVR capabilities. Being able to fire a Sidewinder in air to air doesn't make you multirole. There's a reason why they had a separate upgrade from JA 37 to the JA 37D standard: that variant could actually do air to air well.

The Mirage F1 was a scaled down plane designed alongside the planned Mirage F2. Mirage F2 was supposed to be a somewhat multipurpose fighter/ground attack. While Mirage F1 was a cheap interceptor.
F2 ultimately came up again in a variable wing Mirage G multirole prototypes.
Its sad we dont have the ja-37 variant of the viggen. Its an absolute BEAST in a dogfight. The delta wing with the canards are excellent for slow speed high aoa stuff, which is why the eurofighter, rafale and griffin all use it. It was originally used on the viggen for short take off and landing, so it makes sense. The compressor stalls would also completely go away with the ja with additional engien thrust, and it has a digital fbw system BEFORE the f16, which used an analogue system until block 40.

Some say the Viggen was the first gen 4 fighter. Close coupled canards allowed high AOA that influenced future fighters. They did well working with a modified commercial engine not originally designed for combat. Originally designed as multi role platform. Great video showing how it was underestimated.

sometimes on those kills like the first one, i would LOVE to see the "bandit's" outside view perspective. the rounds coming in, the hits on the fuselage, the subsequent loss of control. it all happened so fast, and so low close to the ground 😵💫

I've always considered Viggen superior to F-1. Nice to see that there was something real.
Now that I have pondered it, give Sven extra wrenches. He could throw them at your opponent, might cause damage, even to into their engine,..never know.
Just think what happens if DCS gets proper damage modeling and fragmentations, as hitting an enemy front of you means you likely fly to air stream where you get FOD because all the metal you made to come out of that target.
No more low level bombing as likely you die to fragments from own bombs.
Requirement to get proper alignment for guns as you don't want to fly through such area where other was just exploding...
Mirage was designed to be a point interceptor following the Soviet doctrine with the MiG-21 and the Americans with our F-102/6 etc., just on a smaller budget and scale.
@@davidsmith8997 I read the same kind of reports from "Six" drivers, they said it had a lot of tricks up it's sleeve. It probably was the ability for delta wing aircraft to dump their nose and lawn dart around and point wherever they want, until they run out of altitude, like Growling has shown with Mirage 2000s etc. I'd bet the Phantoms did the same with them as Growling does with Mirages, stiff arm them until they get down low and then beat them in the two circle rate fight.

I think it's wierd how they've done a ground attack Viggen but not the air defence version. It would be interesting to see how it does with built in 30mm cannon, Sky Flash and Sidewinders instead of gun pods.
Try an F-104 against the Mirage F1. BTW, if worse goes to worse then try a Brewster Buffalo.

The Viggen was designed as a multi-role a/c with emphasis on A to G. As a Mach 2 a/c it took on interceptor roles later. The Mirage F1 was also designed as an interceptor and GA a/c with the F1CE being an interceptor, but their differing design solutions have led to different attributes.
Sven did well, but a bigger hammer might help to prevent the shut-downs.
Notice how the F1 only killed you when you had no engine - typical Frog.

I'd be onboard with the fighter variant of the Viggen.
The J in AJS37 stands for Jakt which means Fighter in Swedish, so the Viggen was absolutely expected to dogfight when needed. Although, the JA37 Jaktviggen was more of an air to air platform with a better enigne and upgraded avionics capable of bvr. ☺️
I mean everything is expected to dogfight when needed even the a10 can dogfight when needed lol.
@@GrowlingSidewinder Yes, but Viggen is a supersonic high altitude fighter, just our variant is more tailored for AG strike, but still having its fighter airframe, Mach=2 speed, high ceiling, lots of power, delta wing. Pure fighter JA-37 variant would be even more capable in air combat having AA radar, Fox1 Skyflash missiles and engine way less prone to compressor stall.

@@GrowlingSidewinder As far as I understand the original AJ 37 (attack-jakt = attack-hunt/pursuit/chase) was designed as a strike fighter with a primary attack role and a secondary fighter role being very much part of the design (it was originally intended to replace both the Saab 32 Lansen in the attack role and the Saab 35 Draken in the fighter role). Then in the late 70s the JA 37 (jakt-attack) came along with a primary fighter/interceptor role while maintaining a secondary ground attack role. The airframe was never designed purely to do just one thing like the A-10 or Su-25.
Fun fact, Saab entered the 37 (in a new proposed "Eurofighter" configuration) into the ACF competition in the mid-70s. This was before the JA 37 version came out. Imagine an alternative timeline where they picked the Viggen instead of the YF-16... =)

The JA 37( C, D, DI upgrade/variants) introduced in 1979 was a fighter-interceptor opposed to the AJ 37. It rocked the Ericsson PS 46/A radar which could support the RB-71 Skyflash medium range AAM.
I was expecting a bit more from the Mirage F1 considering it was against the ground attack version of the Viggen. I imagine the air to air version of the Viggen, the JA 37, would eat the F1 for breakfast. Especially the JA 37D which had upgraded avionics and AMRAAMs.
The mirage f1 was designed due to the limited agility of mirage 3 and was built to lose energy slower

The Viggen is very formidable but in DCS its the fact that its the Early viggen with the RM8 which had compressor issues rather then the RM9 engine which didnt.
It would also help if it was the JA37 Interceptor Viggen and not the AJ37 the ground attack Viggen
