My parents are American born but they told me that the local public college was 4500/year (back in 2008) and that I could go there, or I could find my own way to pay for college. Turns out you can get a good education and a job without shelling out a ton of money to overinflated universities

Two years community college (almost free) then transferred to public state college for the last two. Lived at home until I was done. Under 5k in total student loans and credit card debt. People that choose out of state colleges or big name schools for the same degree shouldn't whine about their hefty debt. I chose a used Corolla, they chose a Range Rover. Not my problem.

I’d say probably a good in between is better. My parents were raised with the worst of both worlds and I was raised with much of the immigrant parenting stuff but also with a lot of the California parenting stuff. Most of it’s actually not that bad and doesn’t harm you but my mom had the experience of being sat down to talk about the birds and the bees when she was only four years old. Because of that experience, she pledged not to talk to me about it until I asked about it. That was when I was eight, and starting puberty. Much more appropriate time.

It's how more traditional, conservative parents viewed marriage. Some people think it's cruel to carry on a loveless marriage for the sake of their child, *scoff*. The modern American gets a divorce because they think about themselves only and they will just casually inflict emotional trauma on their child and set an example for their future generations that will entail the same vicious cycle. A requirement for two adults who decided to have sex and reproduce is to maintain their relationship until a child has reached adulthood. Divorce is child abuse, and there's irrefutable evidence of psychological damage. Even two married parents who hate each other is vastly better than dealing with divorce trauma.

Encouraging their kids despite bad grades, letting them drink and smoke tobacco way earlier than they should've been, not discouraging them from hooking up, etc.
There are very few cases where someone's left-wing or right-wing ideology creates a way different style of raising children. I think it just boils down to personality and how they themselves were raised. Most people I know, left or right, were raised in remarkably similar ways.

I used to feel sorry for the kids because it seemed lime he was so strict with them. The daughter had to work part time in the family business and go to college full time. And the younger son wasn’t allowed to even watch TV unless he had permission. His dad actually made him read encyclopedias ( this was before the internet was in wide use ). But now the daughter is a doctor at a hospital in Texas and the son is an engineer. Both are doing very well for them selves.

or making the daughter. However one thing you people seem to forget is that these parents only care about how their kids do financially. Now of course they probably don't have time or don't know about mental health, however its disturbing that people here seem to think that only physical wealth is the only thing that matters with children and not their mental well-being. I mean if you ask them they'll probably say their fine, but deep down, they're probably not fine at all and dealing with a lot of emotional crap from their childhood

The parents who have reasonable rules for their kids end up having a great relationship with them. When you don't make rules for kids they feel neglected and it creates life long complexes. I used to work with adults with developmental disabilities and when talking to my supervisor, she basically said the same thing. The ones she was the most strict with eventually learned to love and respect her because she became a touchstone for stability and structure in their lives. It gave them the ability to understand (and remember we're talking about mental retardation, down syndrome, etc.) what the proper limits were and it created an _actual_ safe space for them. When I was working there, the systems set in place were very unrestrictive, like the woke parent, due to an overreaction to the horrible abuse the population endured decades ago. I got to see a preview of some of the worst behaviors you get when you're permissive out of a sense of guilt instead of practical and forward-thinking out of sense of responsibility.

I think it’s really BPD being handed down. In fact actually this is the exact environment that causes someone to have BPD, and tends to pass it down when they’re not aware of it. Can speak from experience. One side of my family is the immigrant type and the other side has a long history in the US, both have alarmingly toxic family history that both parents tried to break the cycle of.

It's important to include the question marks in the pronunciation, because the voice goes up after the Vietnamese o-sounds, that resemble "ir" in the (British style) word "Sir" in English, i.e. dropping the r, like the Brits do and landing at a somewhat uh-like sound. Unfortunately English is rather inconsistent, when it comes to this moaning sound and its spelling, so I used the more consistent ö to transcribe it.
