  • Welcome to spring time in The Green Yard! It has become beautiful with the lows in the mid 50's and the highs in the mid 70's. It is the perfect time for us to plant our over-wintered tropical trees. In this video I go through planting our first Foxtail Palm Tree. These trees are native to Australia and are a signature feature in a lot of tropical landscaping. They are especially popular in places that do not freeze like south Florida, southern California and Hawaii. They can grow here in the Phoenix area as well! They require some afternoon shade and winter protection the first few years while they get established. These trees do well with slightly acidic, well draining, loamy soil. Since these trees are heavy feeders it is important to heavily mulch to allow more organic matter to break down into the soil. I can't wait for our beautiful Foxtail Palm tree to grow! Great video, very informational. My only question is that did you grow this from seed or buy this in the valley? I cant find one anywhere. Thank you!😁

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate the kind words, I got this tree from our local nursery called Greenlife by Shamus O'Leary. I know they had a lot in stock during the summer but I'm not sure how many they have now. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I live in palm springs, ca. I just planted one. Do you think they will survive our dry summer sun and heat? Good video.

Hello, thank you for watching and for the positive comments! I know of a few mature foxtail palms in the Phoenix area. It seems that they do okay with our summer sun and heat once they are more established. I planted both of my trees in a spot that will get afternoon shade for the first several years until the trees grow into the sun. If you planted them in full sun they may require some sort of shade structure to help protect them. Here in Phoenix, our main issue with our tropical trees is the cold. I plan on protecting this tree with frost fabric for the first few years until it becomes more established. I hope you're tree does great it first year in the ground and let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello, thank you for watching and commenting! The tree has been in the ground for around 9 months now. It was in a 5 gallon pot when I planted it so I'm assuming it is a few years old already before it was planted in the ground. Hopefully this answers your question. Let me know if you have any other questions.
