I was going to film the first installment of the Palm series yesterday afternoon but I stayed out filming boat too late. So I decided to do it this morning, but there’s a cold front coming through in the wind is blowing so hard you wouldn’t be able to hear anything. I’ll do it soon, hope you stick around and watch it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Beautiful trees. I’m growing a few up in New England from seed. They stay in the greenhouse most of the time but I’ll bring them out over the summer every year.
@@RichardSites I am actually growing one in Growing zone 7a in Lexington KY It’s 15 Feet tall right now already has arching leaves I have heavy protection on it but it loves the Very hot summers and Mild winters here our protection is burlap Heat tape And the Fronds are Pushed down and wrapped with Heat tape and See through Transparent plastic wrap and when spring comes and i unwrap it it springs back up in about maybe like 20 days It’s my favorite tree like ever i got the seedling from my Aunts Yard and Yeah i love it!
I’m in Pinellas and just planted a 6’ tall foxtail 2 days ago. The nursery said water slowly every day for a month at least half an hour yet my neighbor who has some insists that once a week is good otherwise I’ll drown the roots. PS this is the 2nd time I watched your video! 😂 Thank you!
Pinellas is very sandy so the soil should drain quickly. I would water daily for a week, especially now that it is so hot, then back off to every other day for a month. Your neighbor is right but you can keep an eye on the other plants to see how dry things are in the landscape. Also, factor in sprinklers and rain to the equation. And hose off the whole palm, not just the roots. I’m planning on making a video about transpiration, too. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@RichardSites I’m in Pinellas too, just planted a foxtail same size in late January and been watering daily then cut back now to a few times a week per what our landscaper told us. The first palm frond now has turned brown. I’m worried about nutrients bc he says he’d fertilize what he planted, but hasn’t yet. He wanted the 3k job to redo all our front yard , but hasn’t followed thru once it was done. Also, he never put felt down bc we asked for it and said he’d spot treat weeds that come in over the rocks. Now weeds are going crazy. I don’t want to put roundup down on new plants and trees. What should we do? Any thoughts or suggestions? Greatly appreciate any advice!
Hi Richard👋🏻 Im about to plant some palms in my garden and cant decide between royal or foxtail. Any suggestions? And we have dogs, seeds of foxtail can be dangerous for them? Tia
I have 2 foxtail in Palm Coast, FL. They are doing great. I did have to wrap them up during the winter months though. This past winter got consistently in the lower 30s for about 3 weeks.
Question: we bought a young ~10 ft Foxtail, about a year ago from a drive by vendor who also planted it. It literally has not grown. It had two potential palms sticking up looking like they would unfold? But nothing. Still there. We did loose 2 palms, with only 2 left. I’ve fertilized it about 4 months ago. Is it just slowly dying?
It was most likely planted in a hole that was too small. If you don't do something drastic you may lose it. I know this sounds harsh but you might consider digging it up, enlarging the hole to about twice the diameter of the root ball and replanting it. Also if you do this be sure and get all the air space out between the root ball and the surrounding soil. If the Palm is not growing you've got trouble
@@RichardSites yea, it’s pretty sad looking now. My wife has already dismissed it. Looking to replace it with a reputable company. And now I will focus on the hole for our future plantings. The ground around here in this community is horrendous. Almost pure rock. I now see they did the bare minimum of digging 🤨
Hi Richard! I love your videos so much. I'm having a problem with a foxtail palm. It's turning brown, however it has a shoot. It's next to three other foxtails that are thriving. Any advice on how to make my brown tree grow green again? -Krystal Kay
Thank you for the video. We are in eastern Hillsborough county and planted a triple foxtail last summer. During the deep freeze, we got down to mid 20s, I think. It’s been 3 plus months and our foxtails still look pitiful. They each have a shoot, but none of the shoots have opened in over 3 months. What are odds of these trees bouncing back? Thank you.
No, palms only have 1 growing point so if you cut it off, the plant will die. Sometimes palms get hit by lightning and the head will divide. Thanks for the question.
I’m just wondering how best would a person be able to germinate a foxtail palm? I’m trying to germinate a bunch of them here in Ireland 🇮🇪 any tips and tricks are appreciated 😁🥳
I planted 8 Foxtail palms about 12' each last October in SW Florida. They are doing great except one. On one, the trunk is starting to cave in. I started watering every day for the last 2 weeks to try and reverse this. Any ideas? Thanks.
You might look to see if they are susceptible to Ganoderma. Boy, I hope not since it is extremely contagious. Good luck and thanks for watching and commenting.
Hi Richard, I am looking for a non-invasive palms (3-4) for a narrow raised garden bed ( 50cm wide and 8 meter long) in a sunny spot (Sydney), that’s easy to maintain and probably don’t grow more than 2-4 meters. I am so far told Golden cane, Bangalow, Kentia, Chinese fan… but then I have been told contradictory virw on their invasiveness Would appreciate suggestions.
I just use cheap 10 10 10 from Home Depot, broadcast wide and even around the tree, use a little fertilizer more often rather than one heavy fertilization. Fertilizer fixes almost all problems, you will be amazed. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I don't know how cold it gets there in the winter. If it drops below 40 for very long it might be risky. However, if they could survive they would probably already be planted there. A Washingtonian might be a better choice or a Windmill Palm which can survive very cold weather. Thanks for watching and commenting.
How many times I need to water my fox palm tree It’s almost 2 months now My palm tree start the lives turn yellow Some are brown I’m afraid they die 😢 I’m water them daily now I stop cuz I’m worried I’m over water them Now what I’m doing I’m checking the soil around the roots if still moist I don’t water them Our soil here in Guam is rocky and muddy but more rocks Any suggestions ? Hi! Any chance you have email or a way to chat? I recently purchased a new foxtail palm that was struggling here at a nursery. Day 3 planted in yard and have some questions I’d love to ask.

I seen some really tall ones in new port Richey I haven't seen any real tall ones in south Florida the ones in south Florida look sickly and not that great

I love the idea of this series! When I visited the Great State of Florida I bought a sign that says beware of falling coconuts I thought it was funny.

I don't know if the seeds can be dangerous but do not plan a royal palm close to the house they get enormous. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Would the foxtail thrive in Mt Dora Florida? Haven’t seen any around central Fl. I like the looks of them.
I suspect they would grow that far north if given a protected location from a North breeze. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Watering depends on the soil but do not overwater. When you do water soak good and let it thoroughly dry out. Thanks for watching.
My foxtails aren’t looking good how do I know if they’re dying
Not sure, first off make sure they are not staying too wet.
I’ve eaten 10-15% of the single seed which comes inside the palm . Is it poisonous? I’ve got the info from google that the seeds are poisonous.
No idea
