How's it GROWING? Our Starfruit Tree After 1 Year in Phoenix, AZ! (TONS of FLOWERS and FRUIT)
Welcome back to The Green Yard and our Tropical Food Forest! It's been a little over one year since we planted our Starfruit tree into our Food Forest and we are seeing tons of flowers and some fruit. (You can watch our planting video here, ua-cam.com/video/NHkEbhd3sMM/v-deo.html) I am excited for this tree because Starfruits can be very productive tree in Phoenix. Their fruit tends to ripen late spring and fill the gap between our Citrus and Stone Fruit Production. These fruits tend to be sweet and nutritious and do a great job acclimating to our climate. This tree did receive cold protection last winter with frost fabric and C9 light bulbs. This tree gets summer sun until 1:30 to 2pm and seems to thrive with a little more sun. It is planted under heavy mulch and typically gets a fish emulsion application once a month. I have pruned this tree several times this year to help it form more of a tree structure. It seems to enjoy being pruned and put out a lot of new growth after. I am excited to try fruit from this tree in the spring and I can't wait to put out a harvesting video. If you have any questions please comment below. Also, for more great GREEN content make sure to like, subscribe, and follow us on social media.

FEB 1st 2025 in SanTan Valley, Az. I just planted my Bird of Paradise start I wintered in the house to my out side garden. Like this video said, now it fluctuating from 40's to 80's. Into my west garden which is up against a west wall so shaded in the evening by the wall. 🤞 Thank you for your video.
How can buy this plant
Nice 👍🏼
Four years here and nothing
Hi mi friend, greetings here from Sonora mexico, south border of AZ, i have already my exotic citrus trees with me, i was just wondwring if there is any way of communicating with you bc i have some questions and maybe we could share experience from plants and like that hehe if theres a chance
Lychee plant in my farm has leaf folded at the edges , how to care for it
Lovely property and video. I'm inspired. I lived in Santa Cruz many years ago. I walked through the neighborhoods by the beach eating plums. They tasted better than candy.
Hello @MM-yh2xu, thank you for watching and commenting! I also appreciate your kind words about the video. I agree, I think Ed's food forest is beautiful. That's amazing that you were able to walk through the neighborhoods and eat plums, I'm sure they were delicious!
I'm excited to see how this one does this winter with only being half protected, I think I've found a spot in my front yard that would be good for one
Hello @TheJohnGray, thank you for watching and commenting! I am excited to see how it does too. I've actually decided to not protect the tree at all this year. We've seen several nights in the lower 30's including one at 29 degrees. The tree has a small amount of frost damage on some branches but is also putting out new growth on other branches. I will have to do an update later this spring!
@ that always surprises me to hear your area gets colder, we're out in gold canyon and I always figured moving out there from Gilbert that it would get colder since we're further out from the city but it's actually ended up being the opposite
Hi, i saw your video, cool plant, i bought one and this next days is being delivered, im from sonora its south of phoenix in mexico, it has a similar if not the same climate
Hello @eduardoperalta5895, thank you for watching and commenting! I agree, the Buddha Hand is a very cool plant, I'm glad you were able to buy one. I think it'll do very well in your climate! I had mine fruit during it's second year in the ground. Let me know if you have any questions.
@ thank you do much, i bought 3 varietys from a business calles ordquideas morelos which is located very south of my counte(bc im in the north border near az), i bought tavarez lemon, buddhas hand citron and Kaffir lemon tree, whenever you need seeds in the future you can tell me, i go to phx every 3 months or so
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful garden ❤
Hello @julieto3732, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate the kind words and love sharing my garden with all of you. You can view a tour of our food forest by visiting, ua-cam.com/video/chvUg6YmvGQ/v-deo.html.
Yooo a lemon drop mangosteen in AZ - heck yeah! Can't wait to see how this thing does. I'm trying to establish an achacha out in San Tan Valley. Garcinias in AZ excite me. Good luck man!
Hello @gregrendek, thank you for watching and commenting! Right!?! I'm super excited to see how it does. I've been wanting to try an Achacha too but I haven't gotten one yet. Thank you! Good luck with your Achacha as well, you'll have to keep me updated as to how it goes.
Where did you get this?
Hello @StrikeforceJedi, thank you for watching and commenting! I got this Rainbow Eucalyptus at a local nursery in South Phoenix called Greenlife by Shamus O'Leary. I would definitely check out their website to see if they have any in stock right now.
Can’t wait to start a Starfruit from seed
Hello @OMWP3, thank you for watching and commenting! That is so exciting! I bet it will do well from seed. I bought this one as a 3g plant from a local nursery.
Does jackfruit can live in -2 temperature
Hello @saidadz1903, thank you for watching and commenting! We typically reach -2 degrees Celsius one or two nights during our winters. I have frost protected the tree and provide an alternative heat source (C9 Christmas light bulbs). The tree has been doing really well and grew at least another two feet this year. Let me know if you have other questions.
When the tree is mature, will you have to protect it from cold 🥶 night time temps during winter months or will it be possible to withstand them?
Hello @patrickb8533, thank you for watching and commenting! I did protect these Papaya trees their first year in the ground. I was unable to protect them after the first year though because they got so big. You can see how they faired against our winter last year by watching, ua-cam.com/video/3v-r7EQRRNA/v-deo.html. We also had our first harvest this year, which you can watch here, ua-cam.com/video/3EJqdSFTpQA/v-deo.html. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Not very informative for me 😮
Hello @truthreigns369, thank you for watching and commenting! I'm sorry that you did not find the video informative. Feel free to ask additional questions in the comments and I would be happy to help answer any questions you may have.
So beautiful ❤❤❤
Hello @jeanconneely3602, thank you for watching and commenting! I agree with you, Ed's Food Forest Garden is very beautiful!
Hi there . Im so happy i found your channel . Ive heard that we're able to plant tropical fruits in AZ . I live in Maricopa and this just made my day! Any nursery recommendations?
Hello @melam61, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate all of your kind words. We can definitely plant and grow a large variety of fruiting tropical trees and plants here in the Phoenix area. Maricopa gets a little bit colder but definitely still possible for some of the hardier trees. I buy most of my trees and plants from Greenlife by Shamus O'Leary in Phoenix. They have a really great variety. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Where did you purchase your santol plant?
Hello @fatimagavina2878, thank you for watching and commenting! I purchased my Santol tree from a nursery here in Phoenix called Greenlife by Shamus O'Leary. I would check in with them to see if they have any Santol trees before heading to the nursery. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello @scottpiper5801, thank you for watching and commenting!
Oh man!! You need seeds! Otherwise there GMO😮
Hello @zandrarichardson5084, thank you for watching and commenting! Yeah, I've done a decent amount of research on this topic, it seems like this means they are either GMO or created through selective breeding. Most of my research leans to selective breeding but either way I wish it had seeds in it so I could grow more Papayas. Unfortunately, the nursery did not advertise these Papayas as having seeds or being seedless.
I think you just helped me by understanding. This tree requires lower p. H. I was under the oppression that p.h will not be an issue here in phoenix. So I'm getting a new one. I'll be planting soon under my Royal poinciana tree gives a lot of filtered sun. And I will be sure to add sulfur periodically. Thank you
Hello @SaraRitta-y3j, thank you for watching and commenting! It sounds like you have a great plan for your future Loquat tree. The afternoon shade and filtered sun would be perfect and I would definitely recommend giving sulfur periodically to help lower the soil PH. Most of Phoenix has high PH soil but it is always a good idea to test your soil too so you know exactly what you need.
@thegreenyardaz thank you. I meant to say, I know p.h is an issue in general for phoenix running around 8.0 to 9.0 I didn't know it would be an issue for tge loquat tree, but know I know from your video. I'll treat it like my mango tree and periodically add Sulphur to its soil. Thank you.
Attempting to grow jackfruit without a greenhouse in Phoenix is futile. Jackfruit and santol require hogh humidity and temps between 60 and 100
Hello @DOC_AZ, thank you for watching and commenting! I agree that both of these plants require a higher humidity and temps between 60 and 100 but they have been thriving in The Green Yard. I'm not sure if they will ever fruit but they have turned into beautiful trees, especially the Jackfruit tree.
Hey there, curious tree growers! If you’re growing your tree indoors during winter, here’s some advice: the bigger the pot and the more grow lights, the better! I’ve noticed a huge difference if the tree gets 8 hours of light compared to 16 or 24 hours. And guess what? Giving it liquid fertilizer or coffee grounds, eggshells, or even compost can make a big difference too!
Hello @Rocky-cc4uz, thank you for watching and commenting!
@ it was a great video. Very few people give this information on this tree but it isn’t as bad of a tree as people say.
How do you think one would do in Texas, how hot and how cold are they able to live in? I know you answered most of this in the video but if you have more specific information that would be awesome, where I live it has frozen a few years and it tends to get up to 100° or hotter in the summer, and it can vary from very rainy to some pretty long droughts
Hello @Eric-n1q3r, thank you for watching and commenting! Based on what you described for the climate where you live in Texas I think that a Royal Empress will do good. They will definitely like the 100 degree hotter temperatures in the summer. I know that my Royal Empresses see 28 degrees a couple times every year, through doing some research it looks like they can survive even colder weather. I would say you may need to irrigate during the long droughts. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
@@thegreenyardaz Thank you!
Wow that tree is healthy looking. Saw one at Home Depot yesterday. May add to the small citrus orchard I have planted
Hello @chrisd5383, thank you for watching and commenting! It is definitely a good tree that produces a lot. Based on my experience I definitely think any citrus orchard should have a key lime tree in it.
I was looking at the same tree over the weekend. I’m out in queen creek. Do the birds stay away from the apples? I had a peach tree at my last house but I won’t do one again because it attracted the entire neighborhood of small birds. Thanks!
Hello @chrisd5383, thank you for watching and commenting! The Pink Lady Apple trees do very well here in the Phoenix area. The birds do like to eat the Apples. I usually pick them when they are just starting to turn red and this lowers the amount that I loose to the birds. I've found that most of the fruit trees I have attract birds who like to eat the fruit too. I am actually thinking about trying some bird netting over the tree this year.
Make tea from it.
Hello @AbramSparrow-zu3yn, thank you for watching and commenting! This is an amazing idea, I am very excited to try a Buddha Hand tea, thank you!
Did it fruit yet
Hello @WaldoG-b9j, thank you for watching and commenting! This tree has flowered and held onto fruit but typically drops when the fruit gets to the size of a nickel. The tree has gotten significantly bigger this year so I'm hoping we get our first fruit this year.
Enjoyable video. Do you happen to know if grafted Pakistan mulberries would generally grow smaller or larger than tissue culture mulberries? I am keen to grow a Pakistan mulberry here in South Australia (I would buy a grafted one) but am concerned about how huge it could get in my backyard.
Hello @derekc4503, thank you for watching and commenting! I know that Pakistan Mulberries usually get pretty big but after doing some research it sounds like a grafted tree would end up getting bigger than a tissue culture one. I personally heavily trim this tree every winter and bring it back down to a more acceptable size of 8 to 10 feet. As long as your open to trimming it I don't think it would be that big of an issue. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Informative video but the intro is too long and uninteresting. I almost gave up and skipped completely because I had to fast-forward so much. We don’t need to see a drone shot or pond. Get to the point for your audience.
boy shut the hell up, u talk too much literally no one asked for ur opinon if u have a short attention span just say that without all the attitude that the creator of the vid doesnt deserve
Hello @user-pn8tm5eq3u, thank you for watching and commenting! I also appreciate your constructive criticism.
Hello @annedebrattoi2361, thank you for watching and commenting!
@@thegreenyardaz I disagree with the original comment. I personally really enjoy the intros, music and transitions you use in your videos. Overall they are a very relaxing watch. It doesn't always have to be quick info, you definitely put care into the content you create and it shows
It really is an attractive small tree
Hello @timmillan6701, thank you for watching and commenting! I agree with you, I really enjoy the overall shape and look of this starfruit tree.
Amazing garden! Wow! Best part is that he totally gets how important it is to just try it when it comes to planting! 😂
Hello @GrowingBigler, thank you for watching and commenting! I agree, Steven does a great job of planting anything and has a beautiful garden.
This is so awesome! I’ve also planted one in the garden in Ghana. Can’t wait to get fruit from it ! :)
Hello @groforit, thank you for watching and commenting! That is so amazing that you have one in your garden in Ghana! I'm hoping to get some fruit from mine someday soon as well. You'll have to let me know when you get fruit!
How's your Longan doing after a couple years? I lost one after last winter, and then put a new one in this spring and it's done well through the summer and is putting on some new growth now, but it is a slow growing tree. Just for fun I sprouted a couple of seeds at least two years ago and they're only about 12 in tall still. In the Phoenix area as well.
Hello @backyardaddiction, thank you for watching and commenting! Our Longan is still alive but has not done very much since it was planted four years ago. That is so great that it is doing well for you! My Lychee tree is actually doing a lot better than my Longan. That's amazing that you were able to sprout some seeds and get them to grow. It sounds like you have a pretty amazing Green Yard, if you're ever open to giving me a tour to put on the channel I am trying to find more gardeners with amazing Green Yards to feature on the channel. Just let me know
@@thegreenyardaz I probably just killed one of the seedlings by moving it, but that's life in the garden. The yard isn't anything super fancy yet, but have some fun stuff growing and in the works. Once things wake up, you'd be welcome to take a look and see if it's worth a video.
Hi Does the rainbow eucalyptus keep flowering all year round? Thanks
Hello @weirhauch1002, thank you for watching and commenting! That is a great question, this is the first time that I have had my tree flower, it started back in the fall and is still flowering now in January so there's a potential it could flower year round. I will have to update you as we get further into 2025.
@thegreenyardaz wow thanks for confirming me that .I have a natural feeding project for my bees .I have ordered 50 trees of rainbow eucalyptus. I am sure they will help me .I have many types but most of them stopped producing flowers now .
Where are you that you can grow it outdoors? Florida?
Arizona
Hello @torquess454, thank you for watching and commenting! I'm actually located in Phoenix, AZ. We have some cold months but are able to grow a lot of amazing fruiting trees and plants. Let me know if you have any other questions.
@ Arizona! Shoulda known lol well done!
Hi! Where did you acquire your Foxtail palm, and is it still doing ok? My favorite palm!
Hello @handyman429, thank you for watching and commenting! I bought my foxtail palm from a local nursery called Greenlife by Shamus O'Leary. They have a wide variety of fruiting and flowering trees and plants there. My foxtail is still doing well, growing a little on the slower side though. I am planning on doing an update video later this spring.
Could you give updates on how it is doing again? This was a great video!
Hello @Rocky-cc4uz, thank you for watching and commenting! I also appreciate your kind words on the video. The trees are doing amazing, I will do another update video in the next few months. They do seem to have topped out in their size though at about 20 feet. Let me know if you have any specific questions you would like answered.
I put a couple of seedling lemon drop and improved lemon drop trees (and a couple of achachas) in similar conditions/microclimate to what you’re doing here, they made it thru summer just fine but slow growing in the shade. We’ll see how they take winter, good luck with yours!!
Hello @foodmagicwow7725, thank you for watching and commenting! That is awesome that you are getting to put so many seedlings in the ground. You'll have to keep my updated as to how they do! I'm hoping this tree makes it through winter and continues to grow come spring. Thank you for the good luck, you too!
Can the jackfruit survive in AZ?
Hello @PeterPanPredicts, thank you for watching and commenting! As of right now yes, our Jackfruit tree is not just surviving it is thriving. It has grown significantly since this video came out (I'm planning on putting an update video out soon) and has been doing pretty well. I do cold protect it in the winter though, although I only cover the first 5 feet of the tree and the rest is left to the frost. Definitely keep an eye out for an update video in the next month or so and let me know if you have any other questions.
@@thegreenyardaz everything on Google says that they cannot survive says they need 75° weather. I’ve put them inside now because the weather is cooling down. They are about 11 months old. When can they be planted actually outside?
You got a jackfruit in your backyard😮
Hello @estellaosborn6487, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, we do have a Jackfruit tree in our backyard! It has grown significantly since this video came out. I'm planning on putting an update video out soon so definitely look out for it.
Any update on how the honey crisp is doing? What apple do you recommend here?
Hello @HD-jr4qu, thank you for watching and commenting! That is a great question, our Honey Crisp is still alive and doing good. It has yet to flower or fruit though so I'm hoping it's just because it's a younger tree. I will have to do an update video soon to show how much it has grown. Personally, I have had great success with my Pink Lady Apple tree and I usually get a lot of apples off of it. I have also heard that Anna apples do well in the Phoenix area too, although I do not personally have a tree. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Are the seed pods eatable?
Hello @sylviawilliams8670, thank you for watching and commenting! Yes, the seed pods are edible but I have only eaten them when they are still green. Not when they are at the hard, brown stage shown in this short. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Yes.
Hello @fancydog5866, thank you for watching and commenting!
I’m really interested to see how the lemon drop mangosteen does… that one reminds me of mamoncillo (another one in need of established shade tree in AZ)
Hello @jdkeel01, thank you for watching and commenting! I'm really interested to see how the Lemon Drop Mangosteen does as well. It's one of those more tropical and harder to grow trees here in the Phoenix area. I do not have a Mamoncillo tree yet but I have been looking at potentially planting one in our Tropical Food Forest as well. I will put out an update next year as to how it does over this winter and next summer so keep an eye out for that video.
@@thegreenyardazheads up that mamoncillo needs a male and female to fruit unless you get a grafted self-pollinating kind which I’ve found very hard to source (Montgomery is the most common kind, there’s supposedly a few others in puerto rico).
Ts sad if they don't produce seeds so one has to always buy seedlings from the nursery! 😮
Hello @chelseaBlue-i6j, thank you for watching and commenting! I agree with you! I originally liked that there weren’t seeds when I ate the fruit but I realized that means I can never grow any from seed, which is sad.
Tree is looking great! Pete from GreenDreams FL has done some talking around / testing and supposedly they are good down to the upper 20s in temps. Not able to confirm myself due to a small yard, but hope that helps! Everyone says they're more tropical but from what I've been researching, they may have similar cold tolerance to other eucalyptus / corymbia. Keep up the great work bro, always appreciate / enjoy your videos! Cheers from San Tan Valley!
Hello @gregrendek, thank you for watching and commenting! I've watched a lot of Pete's videos but none about the Rainbow Eucalyptus yet, I'll have to check it out. So far its been doing great and I see no signs of frost damage this winter even with it seeing 29 degrees. I appreciate your kind words about my videos, thank you!
It's looking great. Did you protect at all last winter? Thinking to finally not protect mine after 3 years in ground.
Hello @TouchGrassGardening, thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate your kind words, I had a string of C9 Christmas lights at the base of the tree but I did not put any frost fabric on it so I doubt the lights did much. I was pretty nervous about leaving it unprotected but it ended up doing really well with very little cold damage. Hey, would you be open to doing the garden tour video we talked about in a different comment section sometime in October or early November? Just let me know.
@@thegreenyardaz Been sick for awhile (ever heard of valley fever?) ... will return to this once I feel better.
Hello @TouchGrassGardening, oh no!! Yes, I have heard of valley fever before and I'm sorry to hear you're sick. I hope you get better soon!
H! Did the lychee end of fruiting?
Hello @raziberry8043, thank you for watching and commenting! Our Lychee tree held onto fruit until it was around the size of a quarter and then it fell off. I have a feeling this is due to the fact that the tree is still so small. I'm hoping for better results next year and maybe even our first harvest! Let me know if you have any other questions.
That’s excellent news! How many fruits did it set?
