    Few things to note here. During WW2, China was kinda British ally against Japanese (tales of Dr. Kotnis and stuff). Also HK, Singapore were under British influence like British India, so Kolkata was a good place for the Chinese community. Things started going south after the Communists won Chinese civil war, then the invasion of Tibet followed by Dalai Lama moving to India. After the 1962 war I guess things became a little difficult for the Chinese community here (there was government monitoring and all, and a general perception of China as a hostile nation). But things were never as bad as like Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam where backlash against Chinese community was explicit. Despite the ever-present hostility with PRC, most Indians want this Chinese community to stay, prosper and be a bridge😢. Mera naam chin chin chu...

    Kolkata. Most of the 30k Hakka Chinese people did not go back to China. They emigrated to western countries. Like Australia, EU, USA, and Canada.
    There are less than 1000 Chinese Hakka left in Kolkata.
    The Indian man probably referred to other Chinese that also lived in Kolkata.
    What most people don't know is that China has over 200 different cultures of Chinese. It is more like a United nations of Asian cultures.

    The West is fishing for Chinese in India. Chinese people in India have integrated so well. We loved their cuisine, their food stalls, their grand restaurants, their dress making and shoe making skills. Sad that many Chinese are being permanently taken awzy from India. I think I prefer working as a contract worker in tge Middle East rather than sign my life away to a Western country, where we are unknowingly treated as fourth class citizens

    In Assam we had a chinese community at a region called makum but due to Indo-china war in 1962 these people became victim of it, they were attacked, tortured and were displaced from their own land, their homes were burned and were taken down by the military and were sent to concentration camp due to the order of irresponsible government (Gandhi gov ) of that time.
    Now around only 2000 to 3000 Chinese indians are left in assam and are scattered all over assam , their community is all broken , until the time they could have came back to their place, everything was finished .
    But one thing for sure they lived happily with other native ethnic Indians , our Assamese ansectors never doubted them they had always lived as brothers .

    Jun, please do not call those people Chinese..People in North-East states have such traits..they are Indian..they usually get offended when you call them that.. India is a very diverse country..every state is like a new country with different languages, physical traits, geographical landscapes, cuisines etc.

    • @shanrao571
      @shanrao571 Рік тому +99

      This situation was different. Jun wasn't stereotyping just anyone with east-asian traits. Many of the folks in this community are actually descendents of Chinese immigrants, and identify as Chinese. It is completely fine to talk to them about that. It doesn't negate their Indian identity.

    Just a hearty request from side, is it possible to renovate this place and provide proper care to the existing Chinese people and help them boost their businesses so as to facilitate proper flow of trade whether it be through restaurants or through language exchange plus cultural happenings. This won't only benefit these Chinese people but also give them proper health care and basic necessities to essentials in order to live a life with peace and love. This China Town will be a mark representing love and harmony amongst Chinese people and Indian people.
    Just government invests right amount of money and give a fresh, vibing and elegant look to this area and see how happiness evolves from this chinese people be it through food, language or culture.

    Frankly I would not be able to eat amid so much trash around. There must be cleaner places to eat street food for sure, I understand you wanted to see ethnic chiniese in kolkata, you can go to their monastery. They are really nice people I visited them and prayed. There is this small place called swimming pool in kolkata its street food area but uts clean and food is also great.
