- In a special edition of Riverside, Steve Blackwell joins the one and only Lemmy Kilmister, frontman of Motorhead - "a classic example of a heavy metal band" - for an orange juice and a chat about the New Wave of British Heavy Metal: "music your mother shouldn't like".
This report also features Brian Harrigan - the author of the Encyclopaedia Metallica - discussing the likely origin of such heavy metal staples as head-banging, air guitar and always wearing black.
The piece ends with an interview with all-female metal band Rock Goddess, aka sisters Jodie and Julie Turner and Tracey Lamb.

He says it here as well: "It used to be called Heavy Rock". He's right too: Heavy Metal mixes hard rock with classical music influences. Motorhead are blues-based, so it's hard rock/rnr really. Nothing wrong with that, it's ALL Rock n' Roll anyway.
In his book "White Line Fever" Lemmy does call Motorhead Heavy Metal. And when every music festival you play is a metal festival, when the majority of the magazine that feature are metal magazines, when the majority of your fanbase are metalheads, when most of the bands you play with are metal bands, then guess what? You're pretty damn associated with metal. lol

Ace of spades on the young ones was how I fell in love with Motorhead music. Good music is good music, it didn't have to be pigeon-holed, I also like Adam and the Ants, Blondie and Bauhaus

I actually remember this when it was on the telly! Haha! I was about 10/11 when anything was on the telly back in the day you definitely made sure that you saw it, and if you had a video you taped it too!!!

Yes Heavy Metal, remember seeing Judas priest in a community hall in 1980, saw motorhead too, Tell ya heavy Metal lads were so down to earth and good lads, rock fans just loved the music, teenagers are so wimpy and soft today, I went on to be rock a musician, still am at age 55, its in ya blood and keeps one alive, good to see this, how things change! Music is crap today, and so are people...enough said....

Fast forward to today’s metal, super drop tuned, 1000 notes a minute and just noise. I play thrash and a friend said my style is classic metal.

It's a redundancy to me. Heavy metal is a subgenre or rock, so heavy metal is still rock music. So heavy rock is just heavy metal. Hardrock to me is the bridge between rock and heavy metal.

Nu metal was my era as a teenager. Gladly took the torch from old boy and will gladly pass it on. I’m not subject to the bias most people have , they say music isn’t as good anymore but that’s actually because they were teenagers when they listened to music more attentively and shared it with friends and marked new experiences with their fave songs etc. they can’t understand new music with their narrow minds is all.
