Lemmy | Guitar Moves Interview

- Matt Sweeney hung with Motörhead's late, great Lemmy Kilmister at the icon's favorite LA haunt, the Rainbow Bar & Grill, for one of the British legend's final video interviews. Lemmy lived and breathed rock 'n' roll, but as his impact and influence on the genre and all of its wild offshoots-heavy metal, punk, rockabilly-makes clear, his legacy goes deeper than that; Lemmy WAS rock 'n' roll, and a huge part of that was his never-say-die attitude and rowdy musicianship. Ever the gentleman, after a drink and a game of video poker Sweeney spoke on his love for the the signature Rickenbacker bass guitar, auditioning for Hawkwind, his mother's love for lap-steel, and how seeing the Beatles for the first time changed his life-and by extension, changed rock'n'roll forever.
After the interview, Lemmy’s farewell to Sweeney was “It’s good to meet someone who gives a shit.”
Heaviest Guitar Moves episode for sure.
Original Air Date: September 14, 2016

He was so unwell at the end, but still point blank refused to submit.
Sweeney: “It still sounds really good to me!”
Lemmy: “Nah, it doesn’t sound good to me either” lol
Matt Sweeney is a national treasure. Thanks for getting legends like Lemmy to give us a glimpse into their world.
Agreed, this documentation of music is more important than we realize.
Bringing Lemmy back from the dead to do a Guitar Moves is the most metal thing ever 🤘
Tough gig this interview. Glad we got it though. Thank you.
Words can not explain how much i miss this man, having never met him.
Motörhead not touring anymore just doesn't feel right.
Lemmy was the most unpretentious no bullshit man in the business. He was never afraid to speak his mind and never cared who was offended by it. You will always be missed, but you’ll always live on as a legend…and legends never die.
Absolutely. The guys fingers were going because of the diabetes and he still was down to jam a little for the interview. Big contrast to Keith Richards that didn't want to unless he got paid.
The way Lou Barlow plays in Dino Jr. is definitely Lemmy inspired.
Agree. You ever listen to his band Sebadoh? Love the way Jason Loewenstain plays bass with Lou on guitar- good shit.
It is hard to describe how it feels to see Lemmy like this. Underneath the hair dye and rock and roll clothes was an old man with failing health. This is the first time he ever looked… frail.
Frail = drunk
He wasn't even that old, he was 70 when he passed, 4 days after his birthday. So he was 69 here
Lemmy he'd been drunk on camera for 40 years, this was different. He seems like an old man in this clip.
@@evaplavalagunahe lived a hard rock and roll lifestyle for 55 years before this. It's a wonder he made it to 70. His lifestyle would have killed most people by their 40's or 50's. Tough old bastard.
@@Charlesbabbage2209 Simple as cancer.
Anyone whos seen it knows what it does to people, even if the personality is bright it can make the strongest person look like someone you could knock over with one of those japanese hand fans.
Reality is in this footage the man was terminal and at the end stages. All things considered the fact he was even up and out of his house is remarkable
Matt, you were so kind to Lemme. Thank you for your wonderful interview. I'll always remember the professional way that you brought out a wonderful big child that is monumental to Rock and Metal History. Man your so fortunate 😊
I had the pleasure of meeting him on two different occasions and on both occasions he thanked me for being a fan of his band! A TRUE LEGEND & CLASS ACT!!!
The world was a better place with lem in it! We all miss ya lemmy!
God bless Lemmy! Been waiting for this episode to be reuploaded
I discoverd rock & metal in 2018. I was to young to have know about lemmy and in my country and in my home metal was not really played or talked about. And when i discoverd Motörhead my world changed. This man felt like a god or a second father. I may have discoverd you after you passed away lemmy but god damn i miss you. You have inspired me and many others aswell till this day. Born to lose lived to win! Rest in peace sir
this was hard to watch. Lemmy knew it was close.
Goddamn this man is the literal embodiment of rock n roll. Rest well Lem❤
Been waiting patiently for this one right here
in the original video's comments, i read something like the bar owner took the video poker machine to lemmy's home when his health deteriorated significantly and he could no longer leave the house, so he could play the game while lying in bed. touching stuff
That was Super Cool, Matt... the Smile at the end was Classic!!! 🤘🤘🤘 What a Legend Lemmy will always be!!
such a special moment, thank you for doing this
I was lucky enough to see him play three times with Motörhead. Even got his bass pick framed when he threw it out into the audience. Was in 2005 when Lemmy was still at the height of his badassery. So sad to see him like this, but awesome that he was still smiling and uniquely Lemmy Kilmister right to the very end 🤘
Matt you did a good job. Guitar Moves is important.
Lemmy was such a part of the Rainbow that his mail was delivered there.
The pure joy of this is breathtaking
Lemmy man!!! ✊
The first time I saw Motörhead changed my brain permanently, like the first time I dropped acid. The absolute best! 🤘
Matt - so great-
Another amazing video. These are so touching. Thank you!
btw...he told my brother AJ interviewed in columbia mo that he wrote ozzys no more tears mamma im comin home and still born
Was just at the Rainbow , had a burg and a Bud and left a guitar pick at the Lemmy memorial statue.
A certain amount of OG reality left rock and roll when he split.
I can’t wait ❤️
Good to see Artie Bucco and Lemmy , nice colab
Thanks again, Matt. Your show is a national treasure.
I love this series of interviews watched them many times. Think m sweeney is a great interviewer too. This Emmy one was brilliant but also sad as he was coming to the end
Chills...
Very cool man. The great Lemmy.🎸🎶🎶🔥
REST IN POWER 🤘🏻
👀
well, that was sad to watch. RIP Lemmy.
hard to see him like that
Metal as fuck! Thank you Lemmy for everything and making bass playing cool 🔥🔥🔥💀🤟
Man I miss Lemmy...
this is like an all time life achivement
What a treat
R.I.P LEMMY
MIS YOU DOG
Legend
RIP Lemmy.
Great humility and greatness from both parties ❤❤
He's my father figure, no joke
Hard to believe the original lineup is all gone. Physically anyway
Bless him ❤
MOTORHEAD IS THE REASON WE ARE A BAND
Poor Lemmy, may he rest in peace
Everything about this is awesome.
"I like to hear the wall.. not the bricks"
untill the end.
why was this video taken down, I remember watching it years ago
i love John Entwistle hes my favorite too, thats what made me pick up bass. 3:50
Even in his worse states, he was so much more aware and ambulatory than Shane McGowan toward his decline. So, what was the confounding variable? Heroin? Kilmister was famously anti-cocaine. Anti-Heroin. Both men were heavy drinkers and LSD and cannabis users. Any med students want to weigh in?
Lemmy loved his crank
Matt really likes a hot room
anybody know what type of sunglasses Matt's got on??
Can anyone figure out what pickups are on Lemmy's bass in this vid?
😔❤
Oh man…..he was so sick he couldn’t play. It’s hard to watch 😢
"an enormous child"
Cool to see some bass love here! 😁 Keep up the great work, Matt!
RIP
They should put a statue of lemmy by the poker machine
Like James Hetfield stated, imagine if Lemmy was fully on. The world wouldn’t be able to contain him…I wish he was fully on because seeing him like this is sad.
"Seeing Lemmy like this is sad" is one way of looking at it. Kind of like a "glass half empty" thing. Another way of looking at it is to be thankful Matt was able to get this last interview for posterity.
@@danielstoddart You can also look at it like an inspiration. When you see larger than life guys like Lemmy or a Johnny Cash who are struggling health wise, yeah it is sad, but it's true to life as well. When I see videos of Lemmy playing those last shows, despite dying of cancer and whatever other ailments were affecting him, is inspirational.
Never seen him not smoking in an interview
I love every episode. Any new episodes on the horizon?
Why was this taken down?
Who wins in a wrestling match, Lemmy or God?!
Trick question… Lemmy is God!
Trick question....
In the last years he changes Jack and Coke to Orange Juice and Vodka
More healthier, Lemmy are fantastic
🇨🇦👽🎸👍🏼
My parents bought me the Ace Of Spaces album when it came out. I don't think they knew anything about the band or their style, then later, 'Jail Bait'? Hang on what's all this about? 🤣
"Hi"
He should have brought a guitar
IRON CROSS
Sad to see Lemmy in this shape he should've been in a hospital bed looked after instead of this interview was taking place.
He lived on his own terms rather than submitting to the illness, he'd rather do what he loved than ending his final days in a cold hospital room.
@@simmoisbest1 maybe he could've lived longer enjoying the things he was doing for few extra years. Who knows though non of us his doctor
Is Matt Sweeney a scooby doo villian come to life?
MATT U FUCKING RULE DUDE
Sweeney!!
Little late
lemmy vs biden, a debate for the ages
get jimmy page on this
Sounds almost dead there
In the very end he was only able to end himself...But I'm on this way, so it's OK..
...what?
Matt is a terrible guitarist.
Your Mother is a terrible parent.
@@epidot76 she was.
So you choose to perpetuate her misery? Hooray for the world.
@@epidot76 I don’t.
Sending love to ya
Matt Sweeney is a bozo.
RIP Lemmy.
