I absolutely LOVE this version of Mahalia Jackson singing Thomas Dorsey's "Precious Lord"! My spirit quickens every time she sings "But OH!, Take my hand" at 1:38.
Bill Clinton heard me sing this song a cappella in my native language "haitian creole", at the January 12/2010 Haiti's earthquake memorial, and he told me that I reminded him of Mahalia Jackson because his mom used to take him at her concerts. It was a blessing hearing that at such a sad occasion from such guest, it was a real comfort.
Bill Clinton sent me here...;))...Mahalia Jackson owns the most beautiful voice, always loved her soul as she touched ours.....makes my toes curl to listen to her..;))
Man I tell you I'm 21 years old and I listen to what I call great music as far as jazz, R&B, Soul, Gospel, Country even classical and I tell you she's the greatest AND she only sang one genre of music (Gospel) and she's my favorite singer then there's everyone else no questions Asked! Also, I read her biography, seen all her intervews, listened to all her music, and it seems like her soul was spotless as if she was an angel from GOD Listen to that VOICE
I was born in 1951.. I love Ms. Mahalia.. When she was in Imitation Of Life I bawled my eyes out, when she "died" She just gives me chills of love.. Not many people even know who Ms. Mahalia is.. They're missing out on a great and talented woman, who conveyed GOD to us through her singing.. Now I know what my chills are.. She makes you feel it deep down in your heart through to your soul.. You are greatly missed Ms. Mahalia 💜
Mahalia is my inspiration and mentor for singing gospel. Her spirit is always with me when I sing and I feel her smiling down on me. Looking forward to singing in the heavenly choir and drinking from the Christian fountain with her someday.
I remember being in the hospital with double pneumonia, the doctors didn't know what is was at first and say that I almost died. I remember singing this song and soon I started to get better. the doctors say they don't know why I was so sick or why I was able to leave the hospital. BUT I KNOW!

Aristides, listen to the Mighty Clouds of Joy a black gospel-rock group. I bet you will like them. They are from Los Angeles. Try to find the album, "Alive" recorded in France I believe. I had the great experience of seeing them in Concert in the 70's & it was unforgettable.
