- Mahalia Jackson performing "Just a Closer Walk with Thee'" at the 1970 Newport Jazz Festival. Her show-stopping performance during the 70th birthday tribute to Louis Armstrong was a moving finale to the star-studded concert event. This is quite likely the last filmed performance of Jackson, who passed away in January 1972. Mahalia's performance of "Closer Walk" is dedicated to Armstrong, who joins her on-stage for a rousing finish.
This performance is from the original film "Louis Armstrong at Newport" produced and directed by George Wein and Sid Stiber. The original, first-generation 16mm film footage was transferred to high definition in 2008. Edited versions of the film, presented under the title "Good Evening Ev'rybody: In Celebration of Louis Armstrong," have aired on PBS, BBC, and other broadcasters worldwide, and a feature-length version was distributed on DVD.
A limited number of the DVDs are still available on Amazon at www.amazon.com...
Mahalia Jackson's story is told in the Lifetime movie "Robin Roberts Presents: The Mahalia Jackson Story," in which Danielle Brooks stars as Jackson. "Mahalia" has been nominated for an Emmy. Congratulations! #mahaliajackson #mahalia

This song is SO TIMELY for my family and I! My 13 year old sister has cancer, and Sunday I had gotten a call from my parents asking to gather all of my siblings to come and say our goodbyes… We prayed, we asked for a miracle, and here we are 5 days later and my sister has made a MIRACULOUS recovery and doctors are in AWE!
How Wonderful❤ I have known several Miracles in my life.
Hallelujah praise You Lord ❤
GLORY AND HONOR TO THE MOST HIGH GOD🙌🏾🙌🏾❤️❤️🙌🏾🙌🏾
The Lord Jesus Christ will make a liar out of Dr. Everytime. They believe in science not the Lord. You continue to walk in your healing. God Bless you and your family.
Praise the Lord
We will never see the likes of these great performers. They sang when it was a different time in the World. Magnificent performance.
I could give your comment 10 likes.... Oh yes!
My parents is very religious and my grandmother just listen to her until last days and the last song before she closed her eyes with sooner would be done and when I think that song I think of my grandmother and she was the sweetest person in the world and we named the sweetheart my mom is a lovely woman God bless her I will surely miss her when her days are done she's sick right now and she has Alzheimer's but I love her to death and I'll miss her very much I wish you could be here with me forever but I know that's not possible so the last song I will play I have someone sing for her and her final days is sooner we'll be done I love you Mom always

The pianist is underrated. She stayed with it throughout its entirety. Love it!!!
...what a powerful performance ... Mz Mahalia J n a class by herself. Look at Mr. Louis Armstrong's and the audience response. The impromptu duet at the end is everything. The Holy Spirit was dancing ! This recording has made my morning July 24th, 2021
She was one of the best gospel piano players ever.

Her voice was truly anointed by the Lord. She’s long gone but it still touches the soul. I love Mahalia Jackson because she not only loved the Lord but she made sure to live her life according to his principles. I recall doing a book report on her twenty-seven years ago in the tenth grade and that’s what stood out the most - her conviction to do the Lord’s work, and to use her voice only for it.
Yeah but she wasn't just in that circle she sang in the secular audience too
I remember a story I heard, when they asked Mahalia Jackson to join Jazz, she replied, “Jazz is for those in the pit! I’ll stick with Gospel till the day I die.” I love her conviction also! Truly a Legend, forever Queen of Gospel!
Amen to that, it certainly shows
10th grade...27 years ago?! No ma'am, you're not that old!
I think that was her way of spreading the gospel and showing the world she wasn't afraid to declare God's name.
Just saw this video for the 1st time, and I feel like marching right down the street! What a voice!

It was 1970, baby. She's wearing what was called a "wiglet". My mama was a beautician and I can't tell you how many women of all colors wore them. I wore one to my piano recital when I was 10 years old. As a Christian woman, I listen to this song quite often. It's the truth even today - hair or no hair! Praise God!!
My momma is white and she wore one of those too. 🤭 🙏
Yes Lord , praise him any how!!
OMW, what has hair to do with this beautiful song. why do people stoop so low, this is raw talent, savour it
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SISTER, NO ONE CAN SING GOSPEL LIKE HER. BTW, I'M A 77 YO WHITE SOUTHERN LADY.
It doesn't matter what color you are did you see there were more white folks than black folks in the audience 😊
Tell it like it is....
Yes for real great voice😊
😊❤
I’m a 76-year-old Northern woman, and I just posted that through God, Mahalia is my sister!
No one could emotionally devastate a crowd like Mahalia!!
I hope younger people carry on this gospel tradition......so incredible...primal and deep
I am just in awe. The people in the audience were so fortunate to see Mahalia Jackson. You would think that couldn't get better then Louis Armstrong joined her in song. What a fantastic performance by both of them! ♥️
I wish I was alive back then because Ms. Jackson always showed out!!!!

Reminds me of going to church in the hills of Alabama to hear my grandma sing this song and the POWER of God would feel the place. 🙌🏾💛🙌🏾
Where? I'm from Alabama
Her style was scorned in many churches, but she became a super star anyway
@@jasonexploring up the hills toward the east west then left to the right.
Where ever the sounds are angelic
Mine played piano like that. 60s through the 90s. Then they replaced her with for the trash pop/rock musicians. Now it's a rock concert with strobe lights and all.
I live in Alabama and you can’t hardly find music like this anymore , to many trying to fine for fortune and fame and not the Lord!
People stop looking at appearances!! I’m listening to the music and the message that it brings!! I’m still listening to this music ❤ she’s walking with Jesus, I love you Mahalia thanks sweetie for all your beautiful music ❤❤❤❤ Jesus I thank you for allowing me to be able to listen to such beautiful beautiful music

Shanna, I'm afraid you're right. This generation wants to be like, and look like, the world. They don't want to sell out to Jesus like Mahalia and the saints of old did so that they could be used by God. So thankful for these videos. The anointing is still there!!!
I can remember being a little boy, my grandma sitting by the radio listening to Mahalia Jackson singing hymns.
Omg, exactly!!
yub, those were great memories♥

Mahalia Jackson was the queen of gospel music then, so many years ago, and even now in death, all these many years later, she remains the queen to me. A life well lived for the glory of God.
Yes and Marion Williams . I want Jesus to walk with me .
@@winniegonzalez8933 Yes indeed.
She was absolutely gifted by God, and used her gift to bring glory to Our Lord. And I believe she is praising God with heavenly song now.
This version always moves me deeply... at my grandma's memorial service the pianist played this while everyone was gathering and seating. No one knew what it meant to me at the time, but I still can't get thru this one without a tear in my eye lol.
God Gave her an amazing voice!!! And she used it singing about the GOD ALMIGHTY 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ RIP MAHALIA
Exactly.
The 2:50 mark is the Most Significant part. Notice how the lady in the back is enjoying the music and how the woman up front changes her nod as she hears the words "Jesus keep us from all wrong". The point is that this is not just a song. It is WORSHIP. Great Video.
two American icons .. tears of pure joy and Thanksgiving for this walk down memory lane.
Her hair makes it better. It's a bit edgy and rock n roll. Perhaps a tough sell to a gospel crowd but 2021 til infinity I'll love this performance
And you see why Little Richards said she is his idol not only singing style but hair style haha
Not really. Mahalia Jackson sang only Gospel and for the Lord.
This is a jazz crowd not Exactly a church
@@adonaiyah2196 that's my point. At this stage in her career she was performing for secular crowds so despite being awesome was ostracized by large sections of her community.
@@richyorosun9187 yea i dont get why theyd be mad when she portrays the religion to the world

Amen Amen and Amen. Love this gospel song. Don’t make them like this anymore. Whew send chill up my spine. RIP Mahalia and Louis. Thanks for the magical performance and your talents.
I think my very first stirring in my heart towards knowing the Lord came through this lady’s singing. It was back in the days of black and white TV. I was about 6-7 laying on the floor in the living room watching Mahalia on TV. She was singing a gospel song and as she looked up, her eyes fulled with tears. Her voice began quivering as her hands were lifted in praise. I will always remember, as I watched her being so moved, and listened to the words of the song thinking..…”wow! She must really believe in what she is singing about”
What a beautiful story! 👏 God Bless you, and thank you for sharing!
Same here. Grew up on her Christmas album. My parents would play it every year , and I was just enthralled. It truly helped me in my journey to and for the Lord. It continues to help me today as I am a church vocalist today, sometimes singing in several churches a week. She was a truly amazing singer of the Lord's praises! As you said, you can truly tell she "walks that walk and talks that talk", and loves the Lord!
The highlight..... The great Louis Armstrong saying: "Hello Dolly" Awwww Swing it Mama" Favorite part is when The Queen gets happy and sings away from the mic.... Classic Gospel Sing To and For the Lord!! No Stellar Awards, No Glamorous Outfit or Hairdo.... Pure Love and Dedication to the King of Kings. Thank you for bringing this piece of film back and making it more HD. Historic Work of Art.
Wow.... That was uplifting. So much talent and annointing
Mrs. Mahalia Jackson will always be the standard, the exception, and the rule as it relates to heavenly voices. Even after she left the microphone at approx. 5:25, she still snatched your soul!!
Absolutely fabulous Mahalia Jackson no one can touch her I've listened to her since I was a child little child and she still moves me the same way she touches my heart your spirit and deep down in your soul she is truly by God nobody can come close to her as far as female artists go in gospel and in any genre she is the top of the line
