It's so obvious how many modern writers have no idea what real strength, adversity and accomplishment is. They write childish interpretations of other people's interpretations of other people's work and think they are nailing it because there are no actual adults in the room to give them real criticism.
@@robertharper6481 It's all FanFic. Especially Pinky and the Brian's "Dune" slop - it's virtually nothing but Member Berries and Subversion of Expectations. And then you have people who aren't even THAT talented trying to adapt it into TV for the "Modern Audience" and there's no possible way it's going to be anything but bad.
@thatotherguy8138 I just tried to read 'the Butlerian Jihad'; didn't get past the 1st chapter, it's awful, I mean really bad...I found myself editing the unnecessary wordage out while reading lol.
I’m a black woman and I’m sick of sh*t like this. When I watch shows like this, I feel like I am being preached at through the screen about diversity and feminism. STOP. True art makes you think, woke propaganda tells you WHAT to think.
You are also being indoctrinated into Witchcraft and Satanism which is more dangerous to your soul than some salty lesbians moaning about cat piss and the prices of wine in Aldi.
Well, this witches in particular aren't Lesbians... At least they're not supposed to be, and they're more of arcane eugenists who sometimes happen to have psychic powers than actual witches
Yeah because of the changes they made with Chani I'm less excited for the third Dune movie. It completely changes the nature of her and Paul Atreides relationship. They're completely and absolutely committed to each other and each other alone.
@@hayleylongster4698 True, but the average normie doesn't know that. And I'd think they're as sick of it as us nerds are. Space witches really is a very strange trope to pick up... until you realize that feminism has been intertwined with the occult basically since its inception and witches are viewed as sort of a cool counter-culture, anti-patriarchy (anti-Christian) symbol of female empowerment.
Sooo basically, you missed all the best stuff that came towards the end of the episode, that had everybody wanting to know what happens next. 😅👌🏽 Welp, good luck w/that. lol
@@KabbalahSherry Yeah, I think we'll live without it just fine, Auntie Sherry lol. Honestly, someone with your UA-cam name enjoying it is even more of a reason to be turned off by it. Something tells me you're all about the matriarchy! Oy vey!
This is why I love Robert Egger’s film the Witch. Yeah it had some commentary on religious sexual repression but it also pulled no punches in showing how demonic and evil witches are.
If Brian was a good enough writer in his own right he wouldn't have to steal from his father and get a mid tier sci-fi writer to do the heavy lifting...
I Managed around 40 mins before I moved on , incredibly dull plus felt it was another man bad ,women amazing storyline which im sick off. Shame as I was looking forward to this show.
"man bad, woman amazing storyline" what? Did we not watch the same episode? It starts with a moral conflict between 2 factions inside the sisterhood which ends when one of them forces the other to shove a knife into their own neck. Not exactly celebrating women as infallible
I turned it off after basically the entire first 10 minutes of the show turned out to be a middle aged woman lazily giving an exposition dump monologue about all the things that SHOULD have been SHOWN as part of this show's actual plot.
Why would they waste even more time focusing on things that don't have anything to do with THIS plot?? 🤦🏻♀️ The show is about the beginnings of the Sisterbood. NOT the Butlarian Jiad or anything else. So if you don't want to watch a show that is focused on the beginnings of THEIR Order, then don't watch it! But for ya'll to cry & whine that they aren't focusing enough on sh*t that happens 160+ years BEFORE the events of this show, makes absolutely zero sense, when they have been given only a mere 6 episodes to tell this story. I cannot believe the amount of whining & complaining that ya'll are doing because there's so many **gasp** WAH-MEN, in a show about the Bene Gesserite lol And now you're pissed cuz you can't fap to the lead actress ffs?! Like... GTFOH who cares?! She needs to be an accomplished actress of a certain age, for the time period this story takes place in... and she IS. Ya'll are so weak willed & pathetic. Nobody can even enjoy well made productions w/out you lot getting online to cry about it, I swear.
@KabbalahSherry Uhhh... Yeah. It's *supposed* to be about the beginnings of the sisterhood. It's not. The sisterhood is already up and running, and already pulling strings. The show literally just TELLS us about the beginnings of the sisterhood instead. It's textbook bad writing, and it was clumsy AF besides. And that's before you even get into the visuals not being especially great, or all the breaks in cannon. i.e. The whole reason the BG need the "Kwizatch Haderach" is because women can't see the future on their own. Yet... The first scene after the monologue involves a woman, seeing the future.
There is just something about the SyFy version that speaks to me. Admittedly, it was low quality production, but I loved it nonetheless. Children of Dune, however... was sublime.
Me: I'm thinking of watching this series. It's a snoozefest, but I want cool sci-fi. (6:32) Andre: The emperor marries his daughter to a CHILD!! Me: .... and with that, YOU'VE LOST ME!
I didn't bother with Dune part two, as the pointless gender swap and what the did with it in part one made it clear where the series was going. And as I'm no fan of Villnerve either, no point bothering with it.
@@Halfort57- So where is this info you've been shown that proves the director was supposedly "forced" to do such a thing?? 🥴 Literally any time Denis has mentioned the changes he made to the story (like Chani's initial negative stance on Paul being a "Messiah" figure for example), he's had an explanation for why he did it. Like in the case of Chani being upset with Paul at the end of pt 2, the director stated that he wrote it that way to use her character as a symbol for the pushback that can happen when a figure like Paul shows up & changes the dynamic of a people, and how the newer generations have trouble grappling with all of the religious fervor surrounding it. But we know that Paul & Chani eventually have children... and that will no doubt be a big part of the 2nd movie, sooo what is the issue?? She's not going to be upset with Paul forever. lol And it doesn't fundamentally change the foundation of the story in any major, significant way. Frank Herbert always intended for this story to be a cautionary tale against cult of personality type figures, and the issues that arise from giving somebody like that so much power... but ya'll always get such a hard on for Paul, that you seem to never be able to accept that fact. But it's literally what the director is beginning to show us in these films. And he's only been given a mere 2hrs or so per film, to get that point across. Nobody forced the director to make these changes - he WANTED to make them. Not everything is some some agenda good god.
@@KabbalahSherryThere was a news site where he spilled the beans about it. It's been years, but the rational given for the ludicrous change was so the studio could 'update the message with an updated messenger' or some derivitive thereof. I wish I had saved it, bur just like Mr. Biden's remarks about Mrs. Harris during the 2020 Primary... good luck finding it.
@@StratumPressFinding the actual article is akin to finding Mr. Biden's comments about Mrs. Harris during their primary, As they have both been utterly buried by the passage of time.
Dune movie had Jessica having an emotional breakdown outside the room where Paul was having his ability to control his emotions tested. It was FAAAAAR from a perfect movie.
Bruh that same scene literally shows Jessica controlling her emotions much like Paul does. She recites the litany of fear and we can infer that she has taught Paul the same. Her breaking down wasn’t an oversight it was intentional. The movie had very few external dialogue where as the books had so much internal monologue. Which contributes to why the books are hard to film. Jessica really felt fear and pain over potentially sacrificing her beloved son.
Right. An Atreides leading the way to victory would have means a diverse lesbian girl-boss of color leading the way to victory and humiliating every man in sight in the process, with the machines representing the patriarchy and Whiteness.
The instinct to build a show off of that particular aspect of Dune is the problem. Women have plenty of soap opera fodder to watch (which this inevitably will be) that has nothing to do with space or sci-fi. Meanwhile, the natural audience for a Dune series are boys and men. It's like a Ferrari dealership deciding that they only want to sell cars to women.
My worries after Dune Part 1 were amplified in Dune Part 2. I got no vibe/chemistry between Chalamet and Zendaya. However I can't blame her acting altogether for this, as the story change to Chani's character was the most egregious flaw in Part 2. The ending left a very bitter taste and brought down the film for me.
I managed to enjoy Dune 2 in spite of changes made to the story I've read three times, but the screen (re)writers used up my suspension of disappointment by the end of the movie. I have no intention of seeing Dune part 3, but might if it is streaming on a service I haven't dropped.
Imo I would add the changes to Alia (and her relationship to Baron Harkonnen due to that for the future story), that he totally omitted the navigators guild from the plot/world and the rather badly paced final battle (no comparison to the cool battle from the first movie). But yes, the changes to Chani take up too much time and highjack the plot in many ways.
Well... I liked it Unlike the utterly dumpster fire Acolite, I want to see what happens next. A few things bottered me, but It didn't kill my curiosity, unlike utterly garbage fire Acolite.
he didn’t do it because of the ridicule the 1980 dune got for doing it. a fully aware reverend mother toddler is an idea that works in print but not on film. she was present ana taylor joy played her. the only real thing the miss out on is her title Alia of the blade. the 6 year jump being left out hurt the relationship between paul and Chani more then anything else. the just skip over their first kid. but it’s a movie not the book.
How did you get 89 downvotes instantly? Bot farm? Edit: AAAAAND it's gone. The downvotes. Perhaps the addon freaking out.... I am keeping my eye on YT.
Why would they adapt one of the worst novels? They are starting by adapting a novel that was written to “fill in” the history of the different factions. Should have started out with the Butlarian Jihad - which is more interesting and better explains the power structure of the universe Edit: 7:30 Bingo!
I totally agree but am not gonna quibble with more Dune in its current incarnation in my life. Could it be shit? Most definitely. I wanna watch and see though, cause it could be really good if they stick to Herbert's original Religious Cult vibe in his books
the Butlerian Jihad books by Brian Herbert & Kevin Anderson are not "fantastic." They aren't written well and are twice as long as they ought to be. They don't have the deep insights of Frank's writing. The plot is perfectly serviceable, and some of the characters are genuinely good & interesting. They probably would make better movies or TV shows than books. *BUT* it would have been better to simply ignore anything from Brian. His stuff is just a cash grab and fan fiction.
I consider Brians' work to be one step up from fan fiction. That said, series about the machine war, regardless of who wrote it, would be far too expensive to produce in todays entertainment industry. Not to mention time consuming. Ring's of Power is a good example. There's too much CGI and rendering all these things takes a lot of time.
Herbert / Anderson are good stories by bad writers. Compared to Herbert, they feel like amateur fanfiction. I still read them all, gritted my teeth through the bad writing.
i liked the butlerian jihad better than dune itself. Dune is an interesting world and characters but a boring story imo. multiple chapters of buildup and when finally something happens its done in a paragraph. All the visions, premonitions and philosophical ramblings only slowed down the story and annoyed me to no end. I tried reading the 2nd book several times but i just quit halfway in.
I once tried to read "Butlers Jihad". Looooong exposition about how it came so far and how the machines prepared their attack, then a robot employing a human cook, and then we met the first human characters. Boring and confusing.
There is no such thing as the 'expanded Dune universe', just a son milking his fathers legacy...which he is entitled to do and I am entitled to not read.
That right there 2:17 is exactly what made me come out of Dune Part Two completely disappointed. Add to that all that moronic north vs south Fremen sub-plot they peppered in for good measure to pander to "Modern Audiences".
When I first heard of Dune Prophecy made the same mistake as Picard. Do not set your story, series,.or movie After a more exciting and pivotal point in you world's or setting's history, because your Read's \ viewers will be wondering why they are not reading and watching that. Sisterhood is literally the worst book to start a dune series on.
This essay is extremely well-timed and lucid…Hollywood feels like a car dealership now that is sitting on $10Bn worth of Chevy Volts and a few H3 Hummers….never gonna sell.
Well…. If one wanted to make a living bringing the Dune Franchise to the screen, maybe one should stick to the lore! -you know the written word that made it popular in the first place!
First, I'm a huge _Dune_ fan. Second, I don't care for anything woke or any of Brian's cash-grabbing desecrating fanfiction. That said, I watched ep 1, and while there are parts that are provably bad, the whole show is not as bad as some critics make it out to be. Is it good? IDK yet. It may get better, or it could turn sour. I'll give it a go, and if it is bad, I'll have no qualms about crucifying it. Going into it, I didn't know it was based on a Brian & Kevin book. But now that I know that, I can definitely see their influence. And those things are specifically things that make it worse.
Let it burn to death and serve as a frightful warning to others. I never bothered watching either of the movies, I couldn't get past them turning Liet-Kynes into a black woman. In the original movie Liet-Kynes was thought to be important enough that they gave the part to freak'n Max Von Sydow and I see no reason to just ignore the fact that they chose to just throw that character into the trash.
The recent film "Damsel" Is a great example of how to do a strong female character correctly! Elodie isn't a Mary Sue. She struggles, she gets hurt, she shows weakness and vulnerability, But ultimately she triumphs because of her strong will and courage. You would think this is the kind of character that would resonate with the feminists. Instead you get unlikable and unbelievable characters like Rey and Captain marvel
I'm surprised that you called attention to the political marriage where the two betrothed were significantly different in age. Dune is a feudal world after all. Louis XV was 15 when he married a bride seven years older than him. Mary I was 11 years older than Philip, though Philip wasn't a child. That's off top of my head -- there are other such instances. I don't think that the show should shy away from this because the audience might find it weird by modern standards -- that's what the DEI people do.
I'll ask this question of both the people in the comments section and the ME themselves: Would have Chani been better portrayed by Souheila Yacoub? They played Shishakli, Chani's friend. The performance struck me as much...better. I look forwards to your thoughts.
I stopped watching new release movies after the last jedi. Since then I have gotten ninety percent of my modern media through youtube critics, as they are far, FAR more entertaining than what Hollywood/BBC have been putting out.
Whether it's Dune or Star Wars, they're still blatantly peddling the same agenda which is detrimental to the enjoyment of a story. You see it a mile off. It's a no from me dawg.
Not interested in the modern audience show that resembles Dune. I'll keep watching my Sci-Fi series of Dune followed by Children of Dune. Its the Dune that tries to follow canon as much as it can. Remember, the Imperial Climatologist is described as "a tall, thin man with long sandy hair with a mustache and beard". I didnt see him in this recent bastardization of Dune.
All the new movies had to do was simply follow the script of the TV miniseries, but with a bigger budget... and it would have been as great as the critics claim it is.
They absolutely should've gone with the Butlerian Jihad trilogy as a series first. They weren't the best books, but compelling enough to keep a lot of peoples' interest as a Dune universe backstory. Also, their desire to cover the early days of the Sisterhood would've been included in that story, since the origins of the Spacing Guild, the Sisterhood, and Houses Corrino, Atraedes, AND Harkonnen were all in there.
How?? Chani dies giving birth ffs. 🙄 It's like ya'll WANT to be pissed off at everything jfc. We aren't allowed to enjoy anything anymore, even when it's well made. God forbid every piece of our media not focus on a straight white male or ya'll will howl at the moon about it. Ya'll are guaranteed to be pissed at ANYTHING if it's not making you the center of attention all the time & it's gotten to the point where all you do is whine about it. Without even seeing this show yet you lot were already irritated simply BECAUSE it was a show focused on the Sisterhood. lol So it was never going to make you people happy regardless. Thankfully it's getting good reviews by the General Public, who tend to ignore most of ya'lls whining & crying, which means hopefully we'll get more spin offs re: the Sisterhood, or the Navigators, etc. I'd love to see a show about the Machine War. Hopefully there won't be any decent female characters in it for you to cry about....
@KabbalahSherry First, the movies have branched off from the books, so their is no reason Chani has to die in the movies. Second, Paul isn't white. Third, I never said that the show was either good or bad. Fourth, if you wanted to disagree about Chani, you could have just said that you think she will die in the movies like in the books. Instead, you wrote a screed attacking me and seemingly all strait white people. No, my friend, you are why we can't have nice things. Go have a cup of tea and try to calm down.
A DUNE fan i had some hopes for this. Made it through the whole episode.... Wanted to like it but after a few minutes I could already see that it was going to be a tough watch.... Not sure if i can keep going with this series.
There are 6 Dune books, Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, Chapterhouse: Dune. Everything else is third rate fan fiction and not worth your time.
That is your opinion. I really liked the machine crusades, at least those werent filled with visions, premonitions and endless whining about a possible future.
You can "feel" the female energy on writing and direction. More I think of the show, the more is becomes as boring soap which bastardizes Dune universe so much. I am giving the second episode a chance but I think I am out after that, I dont really care. So many things to explore in the universe and they chose this.
I actually liked it. They portrayed Vanya as being morally questionable and not just a girl boss who could do anything without repercussions, which is leaps and bounds beyond the Bries and Reys we’ve been getting for the last decade. I’ll give it another episode to see if it goes full woke.
@@e.c.winner7252 Cool, I'm not the only one. Dune has strong women in the lore, and if done right, it can work, but let's see if they were able to resist the woke mind virus.
@@stardu5t796 agreed! I haven’t read anything beyond parts of the first book, so I can’t speak to the book lore at all, but I find the Bene Gesserit really interesting, even if I find their overarching project to be pretty icky and really morally questionable. 🤔
I wonder if you have seen it? The empress tries to PREVENT the marriage and fails to change the emperors mind. Secondly the series cast doubt about obidience to a headstrong matron who are so convinced about being right that she ignores information that doesn’t fit into her view of things.
I think it can work, but only if they don’t start slinging insults and talking down to the audience. As long as the writers are not out for revenge against the fans.
Another show full of women that I won't watch. I got fed up with this stuff years ago. I can't even enjoy watching the good ones as everybody has been doing this for so long now. It's sooooooo lame.
Agreed on the ruination of Chani. All it would have taken is to simply let another strong female character speak her iconic book-closing speech affirming that the formal marriage did not matter, only the reality of love and care ending with: "History will call us Wives."
The machine wars aren't that interesting IMO. They take place before what makes Dune interesting and are just a generic scifi plot of humans fighting robots.
Excellent analysis! I myself was unaware of this series until I saw an interview with two of the staring actors. Both were very articulate and knowledgeable about the “Duniverse,” and they seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the series. Having seen the interview I had hopes that it might turn out to be a great series! We shall see… 🤔😊
This is Brian Herbert's Mundane writing, often at odds with his father's six Dune books. Ironically, there are moments in this which seemed to take jabs at Denis Villeneuve's movies and it also seems strangely faithful to Brian's writing in a way Denis Villeneuve hasn't been towards FH. There's an unhealthy focus on the Bene Gesserit, which is presenting an unbalanced view of the complex DUNE 'Verse. The Spacing Guild, Mentats and CHOAM are all important parts of the Imperium and lore which all these modern adaptions have it seems intentionally ignored. Denis Villeneuve isn't going to fix what he broke, because his peers and Denis Villeneuve fanboys keep telling him he's a genius and made a masterpiece. Neither of his DINO Movies are that.
Frank Herbert, via Leto 2: "Damn the Romans!" Let's face it, God-Emperor is little more than a socio-political manifesto/diatribe in novel form at times.
Episode 1 was boring AF. A neverending series of scenes with people talking at one another. Clearly written by people who don't understand the relationship between dialog and action in film/TV media.
At least it makes sense to have a show about a powerful group woman who have shaped the future be in Dune as that’s part of the franchise’s identity and not Star Wars which The Acolyte kind of destroys the significance of Anakin as opposed to Dune Prophecy which is about setting things in motion that lead up to what Paul does
I love fantasy novels, i have seen many of the books i love ruined by poor tv series lately. Wheel of time, Willow, Lord of the rings, Witcher. Game of thrones proved it could be successfull and then companies starting doing everything hoping to ride the fantasy train and make money. It looks like they are going to start ruining Sy-Fy now instead. Probably after the success of Fallout. There has been some exceptions, Game of thrones(most of the seasons were good) Hose of dragons and Shogun. I think that if you stick to the source material its the best chance, they are popular for a reason, if you start changing it you might loose the reason it was popular in the first place.
I'm going to disagree here and say, I liked it. Way better than the second dune movie. I gritted my teeth and read all BH/KA books and they are interesting stories by amateurish writers. If you're going to do a female centric series, this is at least the way to do it, with a book that focuses on it. I didn't feel like I was getting preached to, there are some interesting characters being setup, and I feel they're doing a competent job of setting up the storylines. Some future events were telegraphed wayyyy to easily, but overall I found it watchable. Of course the series can still take a wrong turn and go to crap, but I'm willing to watch the next episodes.
You havnt read the books buddy its showing I read all 18+...You need to stop with this one, you dont know what you're talking about. Btw the show veered off fyi from the books but still good, minus bar scene.
That show is really frustrating. Great production values, the potential to make a Game of Thrones in Space. Instead, we get locked up in a covent with stupid fûcking space nuns for most of the time...
The show is ABOUT them 🤦🏻♀️🥴 lol Are you serious w/this sh*t?! The show is literally about the beginnings of their order, so like... YEAH, we spent most of the time focused on them. Why wouldn't we?! It's like ya'll just WANTED to be pissed off about this shows existence from the get-go, because it's focused on their Sisterhood. It's not even making them out to be saints or Mary Sue's either! They have to train for decades to do what they do... and we've already seen the lead character toss any morals out the window in order to achieve her goals, so it's hardly shying away from how ruthless they can be, when tested. The problem is that ya'll fundamentally don't like anything when it's focused on Women having power. Even when they're the damn villains ffs.
@@KabbalahSherryno you misunderstand these men. In real life women dominate them so when they turn on tv they don’t want to see the same thing. Although to be honest there is and has been a real problem with alot of these shows and movies with mainly women cast being very bad to mediocre.
Boring af. I can sit through 3 or 4 hour films. If the show or film is captivating, i can engage. This was only an hour and found myself looking at my phone.
I watched the first chapter. Everything feels wrong, bad acting, wokeness, the cast is horrible, and the vibe they have is horrible. Also there are many things that seem to go out of Dune canon. I will not keep watching it.
Also, the gingercide of Chani. The Fremens are supposed to be Chechnyans/Dagestani/Ingushetiyans/North Ossetians/Circassians/etc according the Frank Herbert’s own source material.
@@francoiseeduard303 Yes, but you didn't need to be specific. You were naming off related and unrelated Caucasian groups and ended it with an “etcera”, as in “and groups like these”, aka speaking in generalizations, in which case you could have just said “Caucasians”. It'd be like saying “Teutons, Swabians, Bavarians, Goths, Cimbrians, Franks, Saxons, etc.” instead of just saying “Germanic groups”. You can do either, but it is much more efficient to use the more succinct option if there's no need to be overly specific.
The first mistake was adapting Pinky and the Brian's book. They took some great potential philosophical struggles and turned them into "Terminator... but in SPAAAAAACCCE!" There's no internal struggle against the over-reliance on machines to do the things that humans should be able to do, there is no struggle about "Who controls the programming?", no questions about where to draw the lines between justifiable usage and blind obedience, over just what makes a Human being a human Being, etc. The struggle could have been: You start with a Smart toaster which can automatically sense who is making toast, and then toast their bread to their preference. Then you have a Smart Fridge who knows when the butter is almost out, and can add Butter to the shopping list. Then you have the "Amazon" service that delivers the Butter (and everything else you order) when required. Then you have the Smart Doorknob who knows to let the Drone in to deliver the Butter. Then you have a Health Update, and you tell your Network "I want to lose 10kg." and the Toaster refuses to toast bread after 8pm, the Fridge orders a new Lite Butter and a new Lite Bread. And then you lose the 10kg, but the Health Update - now connected to your "Watch" that monitors your body - notes that your blood pressure is too high still, so the Network starts to work together to find ways to lower your blood pressure. And one of those ways is to join a fitness centre - so your Network signs you up for one, and adds it to your Calendar (which is attached to your Watch, so you get a beep saying "Please leave for the Fitness Centre in 15 min." and... you've got a pair of shoes and a gym outfit already ordered because the Network didn't know if you needed any of that but decided to purchase it on your behalf anyway. (and you did need it) And suddenly... you're just doing what you're told to do by the Computer. You have no Agency, you have no control over your life, you just wanted to come home, play catch with the kids, then sit down to Netflix and Chill or zone out in Minecraft or maybe go kill some Orks in Space Marine (N), and you let the kitchen just... take over the mundane duties of ordering food, maybe even cooking the food (if you get a food service of some kind). Then you let them do other things - you don't know exactly what your kids are doing, but your Watch does, and your Watch keeps you on time. You don't need a car anymore because there are Self Driving cars, so you just use your palmprint to authorize the self driving car to drive your kids to... whatever they're doing today (soccer? dance? painting? whatever, they're happy that's all that matters). And your don't even look at the email anymore - the algorithms have been set so well that all you need to do is make a passing glance at the "Sent" folder to know that your email is being replied to properly, after you replied to the first three or four emails... jeez, how many years ago? When did Mary start doing... whatever it is she's doing - 10 years? How old IS Mary now anyway - she had a birthday... recently, you remember that new alert, but... how old was she? What did you get her? Where was her party? She leaves the house and goes into a car every morning, you know that - you have to authorize it every day with a handprint, after all - but where does it take her? Do you even know any of this? Have you EVER even known any of this? Are you even human anymore? No. Instead, we got "Hive Mind Terminator Who Hates Humans" and "Quirky Terminator Who Thinks Humans Make Adorable Pets" bantering for a few books, and a bunch of Cyborg Terminators and Terminator Terminators fighting against Humans (who are paranoid that their pocket watch might have a Mini-Terminator in it) and it's just... boring. Conventional. It's a whole bunch of Member Berries "Oh look! Member THIS from Franks books? Member THIS? How about THIS? Look, Tleilaxu EYES, like Hayt, member him? Look, Swordfighters of Ginaz like Duncan, member them?" and Subversion of Expectations (Look! Harkonnen GOOD! Atreides BAD! Mentats were made by the MACHINES! Oooooohhhh!!!) etc. etc. etc. All of the Pinky and the Brian stuff is so Modern Day that it doesn't matter how well the actual writing is, they're just FanFic. All of it. 100% of the Pinky and the Brian books are just Modern Day FanFic. So yeah. They're starting off with Modern Day Dune, and don't have the talent or skill or perhaps even inclination to make that starting base as good as they can make it, so will make it Modern Modern Day for the Modern Audience Dune. Modern Day entertainment sucks. Modern Audience is tiny AND sucks. Modern Day Hollywood doesn't even TRY to elevate bad material with great performances, they just "Stick a chick in it! Make her lame and gay! (and non-White/Non-straight/etc.)" and expect that will make up for all the deficiencies.
I’d watch it, it looks ok to me, even if it isn’t, it certainly won’t put me off watching Dune3 - Dune2 is my third favourite film of the year (after The Substance and Anora)
Absolutely garbage. Felt like a cheap star wars Disney+ show. It honestly was giving Rebel Moon vibes from the corney cinematography to the atrocious and childish dialogue. I forgave the very few Dune part 2 errors because it was 99% an excellent story-- Prophecy is 99% trash >:(
I thought it was ok overall, but that WTF ending got my attention. Something I do like is how familiar but different things are. For example, the Atreides uniform is recognizable , but the Harkonnen's aren't powerful nor are they creepy, bald, albinos yet.
i love and rewatch the David Lynch version often, it's cheesy and parts still crack me up, but i grew up with it, i'm 52 and i don't care to watch this version. i'm good with the books anyway.
OMG! There's a TON of material if you want a female-centric DUNE series. The Norma Cenva (who basically invented all the suspensor and space-folding tech, and became The Oracle (a higher being) with whom Guildsman communed in order to travel in fold space.. Sequel books include Chapter House DUNE, which is ALL about the Sisterhood. Paul Atreides was the product of the Sisterhood's breeding program! Strong women are everywhere you look in DUNE! You don't have to change a thing! Just give a faithful rendering of the source material!
This show is of no interest to me. My concern about a "war against the machines" series is that it might be too close to the Terminator series and be perceived as a rip-off of that franchise. Making it succeed would require taking care to make it sufficiently original and interesting, and I don't think Hollywood has the necessary talent to do that right now.
The problem has never been strong women but rather weak women LARPing both on and behind the camera.
Weak women who think acting like a 16 year mean girl is a power move and not a build up of them getting popped in the mouth.

Apparently, the director was forced to insert such change. You know, to keep Warner's ESG score high. The same thing happened for House of the Dragon

@@garou12 makes sense!

The instinct to build a show off of that particular aspect of Dune is the problem. the Butlerian Jihad books by Brian Herbert & Kevin Anderson are not "fantastic." They aren't written well and are twice as long as they ought to be.
I think of Brian Herberts' stories the same way I do of Gundam storylines; there's the OG and derivatives. I enjoy 'em for what they are, but...

Your comment on the Dune movie is spot on, I agree. I had other issues with the movie, but that part really killed it for me.
That's not saying much. Zendaya is a mediocre actor at best.

A DUNE fan i had some hopes for this. Made it through the whole episode.... Wanted to like it but after a few minutes I could already see that it was going to be a tough watch.... Not sure if i can keep going with this series.
I might check it out in 10 years⚡
There are 6 Dune books, Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, Chapterhouse: Dune. Everything else is third rate fan fiction and not worth your time.
(Shrug) I liked 'em when I was a teenager. Don't know if I'd ever revisit them.
That is your opinion. I really liked the machine crusades, at least those werent filled with visions, premonitions and endless whining about a possible future.
Don't forget The Dune Encyclopedia.
You can "feel" the female energy on writing and direction. More I think of the show, the more is becomes as boring soap which bastardizes Dune universe so much. I am giving the
second episode a chance but I think I am out after that, I dont really care. So many things to explore in the universe and they chose this.
If we're gonna focus on witches could someone at Hollywood at least give us more Bayonetta and less Agatha?
If Hollywood ever made Bayonetta, the changes you KNOW they will make to her and her canon would make her unrecognizable.
I agree 100% with everything you have said. However, I thought the first episode wasn't too bad hoping it gets even better.
MOAR WITCHES... what are you doing Hollywood???
What their religion dictates!
They're literally IN the story man 🤦🏻♀️🙄
@@KabbalahSherryno one cares, maaaan.
I think it can work, but only if they don’t start slinging insults and talking down to the audience. As long as the writers are not out for revenge against the fans.
Dune Part 2 killed any enthusiasm i had for these adaptations.
One word: Liet.
The Butlerian jihad would have been WAY TOO EXPENSIVE to create. Just about every episode would have cost 50 million to produce and shot.
What with all the witches on tv.?
Are those the only empowered women?
Like action movies got the loose cannon cop
Or is it just Sataaaaaaaaaaan!
I see Dune: Prophecy as another Game of Thrones retread.
ill take that over an acolyte retread lol
Another show full of women that I won't watch. I got fed up with this stuff years ago. I can't even enjoy watching the good ones as everybody has been doing this for so long now. It's sooooooo lame.
Agreed on the ruination of Chani. All it would have taken is to simply let another strong female character speak her iconic book-closing speech affirming that the formal marriage did not matter, only the reality of love and care ending with: "History will call us Wives."
I got 5-10 minutes in and turned it off then came looking to see if anyone else smelled the stench lingering all over this piece of shit.
Not interested in another female centric series. The Machine Wars would have definitely been a winner.
Thanks to Hollywoke, witches haven't been this well received since 1693.
Episode 1 was boring AF. A neverending series of scenes with people talking at one another. Clearly written by people who don't understand the relationship between dialog and action in film/TV media.
At least it makes sense to have a show about a powerful group woman who have shaped the future be in Dune as that’s part of the franchise’s identity and not Star Wars which The Acolyte kind of destroys the significance of Anakin as opposed to Dune Prophecy which is about setting things in motion that lead up to what Paul does
They couldn't do a mere reference to the Butlerian Jihad right, now imagine a whole show about it.
I'm pretty sure that entire bar scene was just a way for HBO to throw some banging into the show
Did they learn nothing from the Acoflop?🤦🏻♂️
@@KabbalahSherrythere was no reason to make the show. There's a dog in the books. They could've made a show about the dog.
There pretty much is a GoT in Space... Foundation
For anyone who watched it, how was it?
I liked it.
Mate, watch and make up your own mind. I am in, but then I have nothing else to watch.
Mediocre at best, plus the actresses are quite fugly looking.
After 30 minutes I didn't see one male so I realised where it was going and switched off.
@@shahidmirza1138I'm not gonna waste my time on modern Hollywood. I've got plenty of other things to watch.
You could also just write "Caucasians"/"the peoples of the Caucasus" and save yourself a lot of typing lol
@@steve8610 So could you.
@@DarthPlato That... doesn't make any sense
@steve8610 It was more specific than that.
(and you did need it)
And suddenly... you're just doing what you're told to do by the Computer.
How is Rowling allowing them to reboot potter?

The powahhhh of meeeeeehhnneeeeeeee
I’d watch it, it looks ok to me, even if it isn’t, it certainly won’t put me off watching Dune3 - Dune2 is my third favourite film of the year (after The Substance and Anora)
Give me God Emperor of Dune. i've been waiting so patiently waiting...
Absolutely garbage. Felt like a cheap star wars Disney+ show. It honestly was giving Rebel Moon vibes from the corney cinematography to the atrocious and childish dialogue.
I forgave the very few Dune part 2 errors because it was 99% an excellent story-- Prophecy is 99% trash >:(
AND THE CONSTANT MUSIC PLAYING AND MONTAGES, GOD THE MONTAGES 😫 TELL THE STORY, STOP DOING MONTAGES
i didn't know about Chani in the books but did notice that given the word she is living in, her reaction doesn't add up.
I thought it was ok overall, but that WTF ending got my attention. Something I do like is how familiar but different things are. For example, the Atreides uniform is recognizable , but the Harkonnen's aren't powerful nor are they creepy, bald, albinos yet.
Wow the misoginy in this comment section is wild 😂
i love and rewatch the David Lynch version often, it's cheesy and parts still crack me up, but i grew up with it, i'm 52 and i don't care to watch this version. i'm good with the books anyway.
The 2002 mini-TV show was all right. Compared to the casting's nowadays it is day and night in quality. :(
Episode 1 was a slog. Not sure I'm going to get through this series.
The power of one, the power of two, the power of many! This is crap I'm done after 1 episode...
