- An American tourist in Turks and Caicos is out on bail after he was arrested by airport security when they allegedly found ammo in his luggage. Ryan Watson says it was mistakenly in his bag, but he's now facing a potential mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years behind bars. CBS News senior travel adviser Peter Greenberg has more.

Can't do American stuff in other countries
But it's okay for others to come to the States and do whatever they want.

@@tshaffer9681 \. that is ridiculous....
If you need a passport to get there, you better damn well know what's in your luggage.
The realest comment
You're not in america. Respect the law in foreign countries.
You don’t get a free pass for accidentally having drugs in your luggage and you DON’T get a free pass for firearms or ammunitions in your luggage. 👏👏
What if he accidentally left a dead body in his luggage? In my state (in USA), if you have an empty casing on you at the airport, you are going to prison.
It’s like someone that is an avid golfer… there are always tees in all their pockets and backpacks and trucks etc but you don’t find the golf clubs all over the place. Trust me my dad was an avid hunter and we saw bullets everywhere…. They’re not dangerous unless you have the gun but the guns were locked up. I have compassion for these innocent mistakes… they don’t correlate to drugs… just my opinion.
Rules are rules. The same people saying they’re “responsible gun owners” will give a bunch of excuses why they they have stray ammo everywhere. Can’t have it both ways
@@red4power1They don't correlate to golf balls either
@@LP-ct9nk Impossible to not know that ammo was left in a travel bag unless the person lives life with complete disrespect for the law.
absolutely ZERO sympathy.
I bet he considers himself a responsible gun owner.
Sorry, but I wouldn't call having four separate boxes of ammo in carry-on luggage a "mistake"
It was actually checked baggage...not carry-on.
Are you kidding? Four boxes of ammunition that’s a lot of weight how could you not check your luggage? My guess is he’s probably selling it on the black market and helping to pay for his vacation. Hope he loves that sunshine.
No, not four boxes, it was four rounds.
You don’t know where your bullets are and you have children? Going to prison over a gun fetish is absolutely hilarious.
Pleading for mercy when law is law is hilarious too!

Don't store stuff like that in travel bags. It should've been in a safe. Not a suitcase. No way this was a "mistake".
That’s your first problem you ASSUMED.
I’m glad to see a lot of people are on the same page about this man’s stupidity!!! My next question is how he passed through checkpoints? And do you not empty your luggage after every trip ? Bottom line is that when you leave your house…you are responsible for your own actions!!!
I can't even get my shampoo through security 😂
He said it was from deer hunting in Texas. Remember the joke, guy comes home from a several day fishing trip, asks his wife why she didn’t pack his pyjamas, she said I did, I put them in your tackle box. Guess ammo wasn’t on his mind in Texas. All our gun cases fit several boxes of shells in them, why would you put them in your suitcase? He better throw himself on the mercy of the court and hope they don’t decide to make an example of him. I know laws are in place, but prosecutors and judges may be able to make a plea deal.
@@teresaworobetz5766They just recently passed a mandatory sentencing law - letting one of the first offenders get by with anything less would totally undermine their new policy. Especially with all the publicity this has had. I hope they make him serve the time.

@@firepilot109Watch at 2:20
It wasn't a gun. 4 bullets do not make up a gun. Well, wait a minute, maybe you can make a gun out of 4 bullets. I'll have to try that.
Why are people so lazy and sloppy that they leave things in their luggage that doesn't belong there? I always unpack my bag completely before I start a new trip
Exactly. Lazy and entitled.
Facts
poorly educated.
Why have ammo in a suitcase? Either a really bad mistake or a really stupid mistake.
Or not a mistake at all…
Irresponsible gun owner dealing with the consequences of his own actions. It's okay because he has boot straps he can pull himself up by and take personal responsibility for his own actions. He doesn't even want this news attention because of how personally responsible for his own actions he desperately wants to be.
I bet his whole family has tears in their beers. Crybabies.
Lock him up! Just because he has a family doesn’t make him above the law. 👋🏻
nothing will be gained by putting him in jail
@@lynnewilliams542it will motivate other idiots to check their bags before leaving
@@lynnewilliams542 Consistent sentencing that supports the law is the only way they can get their problem under control. It doesn’t matter what you think might be gained - they thought about it before they made the law and decided that public safety was their primary goal. Not whether some fool “forgot” he had ammo in his luggage. What if it had been drugs that he forgot he had?
He's a full grown adult he should have known better
Even domestic travel within America requires that you declare & hand over guns & ammunitions
I'm glad to see this wasn't the 'typical' incident we see with Americans. Here in Canada, we have one of those customs & immigration reality shows and one common event that makes my blood boil every time is when an American tourist gets caught sneaking his guns into Canada and acting indignant about it. I've literally heard some saying it's their RIGHT to carry arms.
I feel like some Americans who travel internationally treat the trip as if they were flying to Kentucky or something. Hemp oil, ammunition, etc. I feel bad for the guy but you know, the price you pay for being negligent.
Bahamas also bans guns for foreigners. Too many fishermen were shot by panicked American yacht owners when they came alongside to sell lobsters and the Americans naturally assumed black guys are robbers.
its pretty stupid to sneak up on someones boat in the middle of the ocean you cant blame the boat owner from getting scared
@thequake180 But you most certainly can blame them for killing a human being!
The fact that he made it through TSA is amazing.
Why should anyone feel sorry for this guy? Pretty simple to research the gun rules of any foreign country you are traveling to and upon reading the rules and the prison sentences for ignoring them you’d probably want to make damn sure you were in compliance.. Let him rot in jail ..
Thank you, CBS, for airing an interview/segment that doesn't victimize this guy. Majority of us are disgusted w how other news media has covered this story & painted him out to be an innocent victim.
12 years, yeah sounds about right for the STUPID FACTOR ALONE!
Ya don't have ammo within 5,000 feet of your luggage!
And and who packed it?
Rifle ammo rolling around the bottom of your open suitcase on the bed, and toss your dirty drawers on top and zip?
Like I said, the stupid factor alone warrants 12 years!
This country prohibits anyone from having either a firearm OR ammo within their borders. Google it.
Not only this country, but most countries on this planet. Only the USA has weak gun laws.
Americans are not sending their best
His mindset is entitiled narcissist.
Yeah the wife is even worse with those fake crocodile tears what are we going to do. I bet they already have a GoFundMe
Good, Americans need to learn respect for other cultures.
As an American, I agree with you.
You may be an American but you weren’t in America. Also hunting deers? Do you eat those dears? If not, if it’s just for the thrill of the hunt, lock him up
Hunters that keep wildlife stock in check and save the ecosystem from getting destroyed by invasive species should be locked up as well when they dont eat their prey?

Must be a “law and order” type guy.
So he took his best luggage to a resort in the TCI and on a deer hunting trip? The wife needs to hire a private investigator bc those are def some red flags 🚩
They should jail her too.
Do some reading. The ammo was found in his BACKPACK, not luggage
he’s young ... he’ll get out in 10 ~~ Stop playing with guns .... they don’t Protect anything a dog couldn’t .... and a dog does all the listening for U...
Says alot about TSA screening in the states. He should have never made it out of US with that ammo in his luggage.
Which was my question exactly. This just doesn't pass the smell test. There has to be a lot more to this story.
You're allowed ammo in your checked luggage if it's in the proper container. TSA screening probably saw it but didn't see it as an issue. The TSA isn't there to warn you that the country you're traveling to may have an issue with it. He then arrived in the Turks and Caicos and he ended up in deep doo-doo. Turks and Caicos is not Texas.
I was thinking the same thing.
@@roachtoastiesThank God!
@buttercupbaby891 I believe he checked his baggage in the US. When you go through customs in another country, that checked luggage must be x-rayed before you are cleared.

ROFL publicity stunt. They ran out to the local supermarket and got one printed off the internet at those local photo booths and bought a cheap dollar store frame to put it in. Well, it appears the world is tired of our guns, hmmm
The welcome sign in Turks & Caicos reads, "If you packin', we hope you packed for 12 years."
To the best of my knowledge,, it happened in Texass... 🤣
They be frum okrahomo frend!
They cleared American TSA, them foreigners found the ammo where his dear wife hid it. It's called THE OKLAHOMA DIVORCE!
"This ain't Texas."
Which shows what an irresponsible gun owner he is and why we need tougher laws here in the U.S.
How do you not know what’s in your bag
His wife packed it.
Tough! On British soil!! Guns not welcome!!
At least he should have found it when unpacked his bag at the resort, right?? I think he tried to sneak them back once he realized they were there..

@@jfayiii why do you do that? Are the things you say factual?
Say it again for them in the back. In islands like Barbados and T&C, yt ppl are always bringing in guns and ammunition where they never were before. They never charge these boat owners and then mischaracterize the black natives whom are being flooded by firearms in their small homelands.
Play stupid games win stupid prizes you should’ve checked your luggage before leaving the house and check the country laws for entering the country
Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.
How in the hell did this guy get through TSA security check point here in America and the TSA agent didn't say anything to him about the loose bullets in his baggage, it sounds like the TSA agent dropped the ball and didn't flag his baggage to be farther check over
I believe it was in his checked baggage. Those are random checks, depending on the airport of departure.
Canada border guards have the same problem!! Americans seem to figure taking ammo and firearms are a right… and that’s not the case in more civilized countries…
It was probably that cowboy hat that tipped them off.
Make sure you call trump a big orange baby while you cry
Too bad so sad
What americans forget is that ourside their country, people dont joke/ play around with guns or ammunition.

Careless gun owner faces consequences
Good this is another tsa failure how did ammo went thru tsa first place.
You're not in America now. When you travel, don't you pack your own bags. There is no excuse for taking that on the plane. That alone should mean jail time.
Zero sympathy- shows he is a unreasonable gun owner
When taking a trip to Ecuador, after passing through TSA security in Denver i found a 45 caliber round in the 2nd hand backpack i was carrying. 😮
Still love your gun?
Why does an American bring a gun overseas? When I travel I check everything I carry in my luggage three times .
It’s called responsibility. No one gets a free pass.
😢 ~ I feel deeply sad for them.
But I do wish I knew if he was the kind of guy that says ignorance of the law is no excuse“ and stuff about how people should be more responsible and “the law is what the law is“. Some people have no empathy until it happens to them. So I don’t know if this couple was like that or if they were in the middle or they were very empathetic for people all the time. I just wish I knew.b
Better than a Mexican jail.
And Miami.
F him. I didn’t think Brittany G should have got a free pass, neither should he.
Here is another American who believes they can bail out any consequences in foreign companies when it comes to honest mistakes.
There are signs posted everywhere at the airport "No Firearms or Ammo in carry on " These dudes/families had plenty of warnings before leaving! And quoting, "it was a honest mistake" BS
I'm tired of tourists that do not understand that once you leave the laws of the land do not apply to you and can't do as they please without repercussions. I do not have any empathy for them or the family either. Give them the maximum sentence and a fine.
Well said!
This is actually funny
Respect the laws in other countries 🙄 the idea that American thinks this isn’t a big deal is insane to me. Coming from Australia where no one carries without a license and you have to have a good reason to have one, the idea that you would bring them here is beyond stupid
Good. Make a statement and hold them accountable.
Irresponsible gun owners!!
Planted by a white tailed deer
this is such a nice looking white couple.. they should be taken care of and not punished.
I heard Midnight Express was a great movie
Ammo in your bag... no surprise that herecin the US you get a slap on tge wrist
If the ammunition was in the carry on why didn’t TSA catch it?If it was in the check luggage why didn’t the snifffing dog catch it? I’m more concerned that our security didn’t catch it in the USA.
When are people going to learn! Don't you clean out your bag before you pack. It's his fault!
I can see how this mistake would be made. And I also understand why TCI is so strict on this given the wave of murders that took over the island following the pandemic. There needs to be a middle ground however. 12 years is far too long. He can clearly show the origin and the mistake. He wasn't importing 4 bullets for sale or use even. I'm sure his lawyers can solve this issue. A great attorney on the island is Christian Papachristou.if anyone can solve this, it's him
@2:13 The advisory on checking your luggage for "stray ammunition" and "forgotten weapons"...are Americans really that careless?
Take him to jail.
