    I think putting a lot of things in the unsure pile is still good progress. It will become clear in the coming weeks what you actually use from that pile. Then it will be easier to get rid of the rest.

    I have been watching your channel today as I declutter my closet. Big hugs to you! It was a difficult process for me also, but for different reasons. I grew up in poverty and although I had clothes to wear, they never fit quite right and I didn’t have many. So it’s difficult to let go of good clothes that I do like, although might not love for various reasons. Having you decluttering along with me on my screen is helpful, thanks for the company. 😁

    Thankyou for sharing a realistic wardrobe declutter, very refreshing! I personally have put so much pressure on myself over the years to try to have a perfectly curated wardrobe with no wasted or unused pieces, only to go through some life changes causing most of that wardrobe to no longer fit me!
    The frustration of getting rid of the things I was "saving for best" and holding on to "backup" items just because they fit, has been very confronting and im still working out how i want to movw forward with it all.
    But I am learning that even just decluttering a few things at a time when I have the emotional capicity to do so adds up over time. Don't be too hard on yourself!

    Thank you for sharing your experience in what is obviously very tough. It really resonates with me. I recently did Project 333 and really loved it, and during that time I got rid of quite a lot of stuff, but still it felt fun and a game. Since 1st July I decided to do the 30 day minimalist challenge, and, after the first few days, I have found it really hard! Firstly I'm astonished that I could well have 465 items in total to declutter, but this is where I've started to find the pain of getting rid of stuff. I've come to realise that I put a lot of my security into my possessions, whereas, as a Christian, I should be finding my security in God, who is my provider, and I need to step out in faith that God will keep his promise that he will always provide for me. It is a massive learning curve, but since I've done Project 333, I very quickly became overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of stuff that I have, so I am determined to keep going. The thing is, within a few days of letting these items go, I've completely forgotten I ever owned them, and now they are out there doing someone else some good, so I am spurred on to keep going!

    • @ThisEditedLife
      @ThisEditedLife  Місяць тому +1

      I've felt the same with items I've decluttered - I forget I owned them once they're gone! For me, the fear of decluttering is worse than the actual decluttering. It's liberating to let go of things, especially when I donate them and others will get better use of them. Thanks for sharing your perspective ☺

    When I am decluttering clothes and come across something that is higher maintenance, I ask myself if I am prepared to do that maintenance every week. If not, I go looking for an easier to care for replacement. Once I have the replacement, the original item is donated.

    Excellent video. I can definitely relate. I’m 69 and no longer work in an office. I also suffered from an eating disorder, and always had a few extra pounds. Loose clothing was the style for me. But now that I no longer work and have a much simpler wardrobe while also being a minimalist, life is so much easier. No more anxiety about clothes. I hope you will soon feel at ease with your choices. You can do it!

To echo at least one other commenter, I am also grateful for you sharing your emotions around this process and how you talk through them and why you think this process triggered them. I have struggled with body shame pretty much all my life and have a very difficult time with finding clothing that I actually feel good in so hearing your thoughts around this process really resonates with me. Another great video, no one should slate you, as the declutter is your declutter and no one else's - grateful you shared your experience. 😀 I used to do big declutter once a year...but I found the experience super difficult and like you, I would make excuses and find it hard to part with clothes. Now, I check my clothes every two to three months and find it super easy cull items which no longer suit my needs, or have faded etc. Doing it like this means my wardrobe feels "fresh" and it give me a chance to have a good tidy to! Plus, I stick to my rule of one in, one out which helps keep the clothes number down! Took a bag to the charity shop today and rewarded myself with a gorgeous cushion for my sofa - been looking for ages and this one was a steal at £6!

    One thing i notice is how all your clothes are on radom hangers and visually if you look at your clothes and can't work out what to wear then this can make you feel this way. I organise my clothes in categories, e.g skirts together, blouses together, evening wear together. It makes it easier to see and work out what i want to wear and gives me more wearability of each items

    Oh boy!! can I ever related to the "keep it for best" and then "best" never shows up and so I have a tonne of clothes that just sit there waiting.....I recently retired from work and I still have a lot of work clothes in my closet that for whatever reason, I can quite throw away yet - slowly I am working my way thru but its a tough process. My parents were British and they raised me in Canada with that whole "just in case" and "if its good, keep it" mentality which I put down to the rationing and the war years so I give my mum a pass, bless her! new subscriber here - also I had an eating disorder like you so your content helps me feel not so alone♥

    When I feel that overwhelming I stop decluttering for some time, maybe months, then when i declutter again it's more easy to let go things that before I was anxious. I think some time helps to change the point of view and make the difference. I'm just beggining in minimalism and his is my third round of decluttering, I'm still learning a lot and having hard times.

    I can totally identify!!! I’m not into fashion either but I like everything in my closet. So it’s very anxiety producing when I try to declutter. I think your thought process was good. The black trousers you put in the maybe pile might go in the yes pile with the thought that if you don’t grab them to wear you can declutter them. I keep a bag in my closet for decluttering. ❤

  • @roseyriver3921
    @roseyriver3921 Місяць тому +2

    From watching other clothing videos on YT, these are my favourite things you could consider. Diane in Denmark puts her clothes on probation if they aren't being worn. So rather than 'declutter , keep or defer as 'unsure'', how about making yourself wearing the 'unsures' over the next few weeks and perhaps work out why it is that you don't reach for them? It might help reduce the anxiety that you are feeling. If they pass 'probation', keep and wear them! The other thing I like, have done and continue to do, is Project 333. It's so flexible and kind and you make your own rules. It's especially good for us in the UK where decluttering warm winter wear in summer is extra hard, as things are stored but rotated and reviewed every 3 months. It's not restrictive, it's freeing. Be kind to your self ❤❤

      @@ThisEditedLife I am always recommending Diane in Denmark for clothes decluttering/putting outfits together and The MInimal Mom podcast with Project 333 creator Courtney Carver, as well as CC's own 'Be more with less'. My sister is coming over from Aus next week and I want/need her to help me declutter my clothes by 66%! ha ha! I'd cry on my own but with her, well, we'll both laugh.

    I think it’s hard for frugal people to declutter clothes, because we bought them carefully and we don’t want to have to replace them. Keep the occasion top! A friend decluttered his occasionwear and then had to re-buy it when the occasions started happening!
    If I put all my clothes on the bed then the bed would break, but then my weight goes up and down by three sizes due to medications, so I need different sizes of clothes.
    You don’t have many clothes so please be easy on yourself. You said there was so much, but there really wasn’t.

    Clothes Edit System For Low or No Stress - I wish to suggest the followng system for reviewing and possible decluttering clothes. Many people feel stressed at the thought of decluttering but there is a perfectly logical reason for this which is you don't know what you have. And with this system, no matter if you only do one step, things will be better for you.
    - Sort your clothes into categories that make sense for you (work vs non-work clothes, summer vs winter, party clothes, sentimental clothing items, hawaiian shirts (a mojor category for my friend), t-shirts, short sleeve shirts, messy work projects clothing, workout, sleepware, etc). This step is to give you a total grasp on what you have. If you find anything you are CERTAIN you want to declutter, bag those.
    - Neaten up the piles (fold things, etc.) so you are not looking at what is visually a jumbled mess
    - Put items into a ROUGH order of "most loved/worn" to "least loved/worn" - don't angst over it, just a general order
    - Make a list of category counts (how many t-shirts, how many ball-room dancing dresses, etc
    - Pull out and hang up a "base line" of items which is what you would need if your home was being remodeled and you were going to stay for a month in a different house (but with the same laundry situation you have now (washer/dryer or laundromat?) This step is support for moving forward with possible decluttering decisions in that you can be confident that your basic day to day needs are covered
    - Let everything sit for a day or two
    - Now it is time to consider possbly letting things go. You now should have a solid grasp of what you have. Also, since clothes wear out, you may choose to have "backstock" folded and stored high up in your closet or other storage area. In answer to "what if I need it?!" is the question "what would I do if I don't have this?" to which the answer is "wear something else (and I will actually be just fine)". And if you have a huge abundance of clothing, maybe try to strengthen you instinct for generosity. (Note - Any fellow christians out there - Luke 3:11. Enough said).
    - Unless you do a massive amount of shopping, this first massive review of clothing will not need to happen again.

    Because I have a big, year long trip around the world coming up starting this autumn, and will be renting out my place, and I ve known about it all year, i ve been putting up stuff for sale on vinted and ebay local pick up, mainly clothes, random stuff, and books. I just put up like, 15 or 20 items with photos and one liner descriptions at a time, and do have packaging, stamps and address stickers handy already, so that it only takes a couple of minutes per sale, and then i just stick it into a letter box en route. I ve made a thousand euros + this way already, and am expecting to make another 1000+ , which will be nice to have on my trip. It's been a very gentle, effortless process, and my place and wardrobe are starting to feel very manageable again. I have also decluttered about two thirds of the space in my basement compartment, to make space for my personal items before the sublettee moves in. I highly recommend this method for anyone who isn't pressed for time. 10 items a day will do wonders over time, and also be nice for your wallet.

      How exciting about your trip, and thanks for sharing your process! I do think "slow and steady" is a good way to declutter if it's anxiety-provoking. I think the slow approach will work best for me, anyway ☺

  • @mellowmusic1372
    @mellowmusic1372 Місяць тому +1

    Errr why would you care what other people say you need to declutter? I think that’s a better question than a question of why you were “unsure” a lot. It’s fine to have slow declutter days. You gave away one item- great. I think it’s a bit like me with losing weight. First 30 kilos are relatively easy, but the last 1-5 kilos- extremely hard. Also maybe you just need to hang /fold your clothes differently in some way and you’d feel that your wardrobe is tidier? Also perhaps you decided to declutter on that particular day not because of your wardrobe, but maybe because you are anxious about starting a new job? Or some other issue related to your move or your daily life? Perhaps decluttering has nothing to do with it?

    • @ThisEditedLife
      @ThisEditedLife  Місяць тому +1

      You're right that I shouldn't care but there can be a lot of comments on UA-cam from people in terms of how many items one "should" own and there's an emphasis on getting rid of "everything". But, we're all on our own journeys ☺

  • @sereniteretrouvee
    @sereniteretrouvee Місяць тому +3

    Frankly, I don't think you need to declutter your wardrobe. You seem to have just the right amount and variety of clothes you need to be yourself and happy. The average number of clothes owned by women in the world is 134 items per person. To get rid of too much can also create a negative impact on your mental.

    • @ThisEditedLife
      @ThisEditedLife  Місяць тому +2

      Yes, I certainly don't want to be extreme but I was aware there were items I wasn't using. Minimalism is helping me think about what I really need, but I agree with you that it shouldn't ever be so extreme as to affect one's mental health.
