A steam locomotive needs pistons, and only the 2018 one has movable pistons, thus that's the best one for me.
2022 also
@@benmoore2253 2022 one is a black sheep since it's only a display piece
@@emilbt7588 Sorry I meant the most recent Hogwarts express with two coaches and Hogsmeade Station and the ford anglia
Set 76423
Same
Movable pistons are definitely the symbols of steam locomotive
As somone who is into trains, the lack of working valve gear (thats what the spinning rod the wheels is called) on the 2023 version killed the entire set for me as that's a big part of what makes a steam train a steam train. The older ones look like theme park rides. I modified the tender on the 2018 version to make it bigger and motorized it and also gave it the magnetic couplers. It's perfect now imo
I have to disagree. The 2018 is better than the 2023 and 2010.
The 2018 give you the printed pieces, and larger passenger cars, a proper platform and the larger main engine (playability is much easier than the 2023).
The 2010 is nostalgic and is quite similar to the 2018 except the bright yellow accents. I personally prefer the muted colours of the 2018.
The 2023 version’s main appeal is not the train, but hogsmeade station. The engine is TINY, and the light grey roof is out of place.
My rating would be:
2018
2010
2023
I personally really like the 2018 version but I’m probably biased because it’s basically the first Lego set I ever owned
These comparison videos make me realise that there is general downsizing of LEGO Harry Potter sets recently... Hogwarts was modular, but each section was smaller than previous iteration, Weasley shop is smaller to Diagon Alley, Express is smaller... And still prices are going up! Somehow they are giving us more and more minifigures, but how many Harry's I need? Really if LEGO will not surprise me much with upcoming waves - this might be the last one I am getting...
2023 best engine, 2010 best passenger car (but 2018 passenger car is also pretty decent)
It would be cool if someone made instructions combing the 2018 and 2023 versions
The black roof is better
I think I personally lean towards the 2023 version but adding the best aspects of the others. I would extend the two passenger cars and change the roof color back to black, replace the front of the engine with the round piece from the other versions, and either modify or just add the tender from the 2010 version. I would also, of course, motorize the engine using instructions I found, which also adds the valve gear (the spinning rod on the wheels), and also look into modifying the cab of the engine to fit a figure inside.
As a side note, I can't help but wonder if the 2023 version, having been released only a year after the collector's edition, wasn't released in response to the less-than-stellar reviews of the 2022 version, or was just purposefully released with the intention of it being a cheaper alternative, or if the collector's set is just meant to be it's own thing and doesn't really count given it's meant more as a display set.
If you really don't like the gray roof on the coaches just get black pieces to replace it
2018
2023
2011
Is my ranking
Thanks for showing the engines side by side. My ranking is
2018
2010
2023
Don't like the Hogwarts emblem on the front of 2023, how small it is or the gray roofs on cars. Seeing them all together think the 2018 looks the best.
The 2010 version is extremely close to my heart because it was the first that, as a child, I saved up for dollar by dollar and purchased using exclusively money I earned through chores
As someone who is more into the train side of Legos, I have to say I prefer the 2023 set is the best version overall. I bought it last week and I have to say it really captured the general look of the locomotive and tender the best. When it comes to Lego trains, I'm more about quality over quantity, so I didn't even bother building the two (In my opinion) garbage passenger cars and instead used the parts to create one car that was much better. I do plan to motorize mine in the future and add custom side rods and other mods to make the locomotive even better. As for fitting a minifigure into the cab, there's a video here somewhere that shows how to do it, it's really simple and quick and it works rather well.
If i'm being honest, my fav part is actually the station part of the 2023 version 😅 not the trains, but my favorite is prob 2023 even though 2011 is somewhat nostalgic lol
I changed my (2023) locomotive a bit so It could fit the conductor and it has the magnetic buffer instead of technic connection. I also changed the tender a LOT with bricks and plates from my own collection so it could fit the poweredup electronics. I have not yet build the passenger cars but will probably make it into a single longer one because I think they are too small. I am even thinking of making them 7 wide because it will fit better with my other MOC train which is 8 wide.
Bro thinks he’s James the red engine 💀
Well, it is splendid
Remove the ocylinders and replace the small Tram wheels with 2 small wheels and boom you got the Hogwarts express James
Great video. I’ve never really taken a good look at the 2010 train. I bought 2 of the 2018 train when it was on sale to have two passenger cars. On the fence about the new one.
Speaking from experience, it’s a pain to incorporate valve gear on a Lego steam locomotive and keep the cost/size down, as you need larger pistons in order to attach the piston and main rods to in order to interact with the driving wheels. Not to mention Lego’s one size of locomotive wheels also complicated things.
Does this mean the 2018 set is quite good as it manages to incldue the piston successfully?
I have two of the 2018 ones and the collectors edition. I had one 2018 set on display and an extra carriage from the second set. Im going to just build the station from the 2023 set and use the engine i already have from 2018 for the display
Looking forward to watching your review, after having just ridden today the HE at Universal Studios!
Looking to buy my partner one of these for Xmas but couldn’t decide which one, thanks for the help!
I really love the 2018 version. My very favorite.
Yeah, I also think the 2010 version if the superior version design-wise. And the things it could improve, can be improved with small MODs.
I’m looking to buy my first Harry Potter set, which do you recommend to start a collection?
Yeah I would agree that the LBG roof is a little off-putting, but not maybe to the extent you feel. The extreme tight fit of the driver on the new one is not the best. All of that said, it kind of beats out every other iteration in the other ways. I would like a movable piston on it, but the proportions, the 2 cars, the great station, very good selection of figs, does make me like it a lot. I do have a soft spot for the 2001 version, as I had it as a kid, but the lack of tender, and also the engine car being really quite poorly designed is definitely not the best. Still has that old lego charm which is always super fun.
I wish I that the 2023 one had side rods because it looks weird without it
would u recommend the 2023 one if u have 2018? I really like the station build but dont know if I could join the trains?
Hi there, I saw this video and watched it because i have plans to buy one, but was confused as to which one it is. I figured out that its the 2018 one & im getting it New In Box real cheap! So thanks for the info. Guess ill have to modify the tender car & maybe purchase another passenger car? Hmmmm......
2018 is the best set for me. Nice locomotive (most important), and Prisoner of Azkaban figures (best movie). The passenger car is also the best design.
Got the 2010 one and love it. Getting the 2023 one and think it looks great. Like the look of the 2018 one but didn't get it. I also have the 2001 Hogwarts Express, and it's great for what it is.
Split the difference in roof colors and use pearl dark grey.
Thank you.
2018 is my favorite, because it’s the only one I have and because of the nostalgia I have for it (even though it’s only 5 years old).
3:44 Those are stickers, they aren't printed
Cool. Thanks for showing this comparison. Now I know I am not buying this set as I personally think the 2018 set is way with a few modifications.😀👍
The new one triggers my claustrophobia.
Minifigs have no room.
The 2023 roof color choice is very confusing considering we have the UCS set which should be the most accurate one and even the one in Universal has a dark roof. I just don't get what they were basing that light of a roof on.
The 2023 set actually looks like a Great Western hall class so it’s the best of my opinion
2010 was goated but it needed side rods.
2018 is my favorite, just wish it had two cars like the 2023 version. The grey roof on the 2023 cars is what ruined that set for me.
Hook them all together for mega train!
Dont have any but 2018 looks the best to me
I’m biased because it’s what I had, 2010 was the best
¡I Also Have A Hogwarts Express Train Set! Not From Lego Though, I Have A Lionel 2010 G Scale Ready To Run Hogwarts Express Train Set
I get that there are problems with it, but the Collectors’ Edition one is such a sexy model bro 😩 It’s honestly peak Lego train for me
Don’t worry holly the train fans can help you out. This is a really good comparison.
The hogwarts express is a fantastic example of LEGO improving sets overtime. The 2018 tender is trash because it’s short and doesn’t have the right curvature. The 2010 tender is longer but the 2013 tender has the best length and curvature. The 2010 version not having the connecting side rods is a big letdown which the 2018 and 2023 versions got much better. I’m not a magician I’m a muggle so I have no comment about the passenger coaches
No polybag version? I love that one
2010 é o meu favorito.
Holly, if you love comparing LEGO sets then you'll love our new LEGO higher or lower game where you have to guess which set has more pieces. We challenge you to play and get a score of 20 or else you are definitely not the CEO of lego :D
So, does this make the Hogwarts Express the equivalent to Luke's Landspeeder or the X-Wing? 😏
“At this point the Hogwarts Express has become Harry Potter’s answer to Luke’s landspeeder” -Holly, June 4 ‘Another One? | LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts
Express & Hogsmede Station’
you say 2013 twice, but i guess you meant 2023 there :)
Whoops, she called the 2023 set the 2013 one too many times to count.
8:44 The 2013 version is the best? I didn't know a Hogwarts Express was released in 2013! :) My favorite is the 2018 version, probably because that's the only version I have. And you can actually motorize it (look up "HP - Motorized Hogwarts Express (75955) by moonmanbricks"), you just have to make the tender car a bit longer which makes it look better. I have not done that yet, but plan to. I really don't like the size of the new version, nor the fact that it has light gray tops on the passenger cars.
Hiii
I’m sorry but those are not cars, those are coaches and a tender…
Don’t forget about the class of engine( aka GWR Hall class)
Kind of a pointless comparison without including the Mould King version.
