I absolutely love the Icons set. It’s the only large scale HP set that I own. The build held me and compelled me to complete the set in one day. There are many iconic elements, The stunning Headwig, The School Books, Tom Riddle’s Diary, Multiple Iconic Potions, Harry’s Wand, Harry’s Glasses, Chocolate Frog, Golden Snitch, Hogwarts Acceptance Letter, Custom House Scarf. It’s a great representation of the entire HP legacy. I purchased the Wicked Bricks display case and I am so pleased with the set. I see it every day and it just makes me smile.
When you were referring to the modding section and talked about the included extra with the Icons set, it got confusing because you showed the train ticket which is not what comes with the Icons set. The display for the golden figures isn’t absolutely necessary to display with the Icons set since the complete set of golden mini figures are obtained by purchasing many different HP sets. However, in my opinion, it does look really great displayed in front of the icons set and it still feels coherent.
It's hard to choose but for me it's the castle. It's closest to the movie castle than any other set combined and it's for that reason I like it so much. A mini scaled version with that ammount of details is just impossible and/or wouldn't be financially viable for most of us. Diagon alley comes next because it's such a great representation of, well diagon alley. Third is the Icon set. While it isn't bad and imo quite good, it's just not at the level of the other two. As for the train, it's my birthday present from my parent so I still need to wait 2 full month before building it 😢. Because I haven't built it yet I can't place it in my list, IMO, that being said the price is high compared to the other 3 pre price bump.
The Hogwarts Castle is the one that appeals most to me

I agree! For me Diagon Alley would take the number one spot as well... I can't wait till they add on to it, they'll have to do a Gringotts at some point! I was planning on owning every single Harry Potter set, but with everything in life becoming more expensive, I can't justify to buy the huge Hogwarts Express where I don't even have any space for. It saddens me, cause it's a gorgeous model, but for that price point it's just not happening for me.
Now we know Gringotts is coming, if you didn't see the news already!
Diagon Alley takes the cake in every category without a question.
I really liked the Icons build over all. Hedwig steals the shown but there were some cool techniques used in the books and the wand.
I also really like that it doesn’t scream HP in your face. I have it on my desk at work and gets tons of compliments on it just for the owl build from people who like birds. The wings do get repetitive but sculpting in the body and head is awesome.
I know this video was from a long time ago, but just wanted to say I put lights in my castle and it is stunning. The lights coming through the stained glass is beautiful.
Diagon Alley takes the cake! It is so vibrant and the 4 buildings it includes are so worth it! Def a must have and can't wait to add to my collection. The Icons Collectors Edition ranks a close second imo. Such a beautiful display piece that includes iconic details without having to take up much space like the Hogwarts Express.
I went to universal a week ago and the diagon alley set was such a good comparison, I want it so badly.
Kind of sad about the Icons set coming in last. For me if I could afford these big sets it would be the first one I would buy. Mostly because it looks the best when it comes to displaying it on a shelf with other non-lego Harry Potter items. Plus it isn't as long as the train or Diagon Alley. And I already have the playscale Hogwarts sets (before the modular style was introduced). Plus I love the potion bottles in the icon sets and if there was a way to just buy those I would 100% do that.
Someone else mentioned above that the icons set is the one people notice when they look at your sets and they were right, it stands out amongst the others.
I own 3 of these. In my opinion Hogwarts and icons are very close. I do think that Icons is easily the most striking and eye catching. Definitely the one that people notice first when they visit.

The castle has to be number 1 for me. Even people that aren’t mega fans will know that it’s from Harry Potter, I feel like the DA just isn’t as iconic/recognizable by not hardcore fans
If I were a Lego designer (which I am working towards) I would watch this video every time I worked on a Harry Potter D2C set. Great video!

What you could do is spend another $500 on a second Hogwarts Express sell the train, and the figures while some of them are still exclusive, and then combine the two platforms together.
Number1: daigon allay
Number2: hogwarts castle
Number3 colecter icon
Number4: the train
I’d probably disagree with the whole diagon alley is more iconic than the icons set. Of all of them I think Diagon Alley is the least instantly recognisable

I went for the Owl since everything can be a modular.
I would say the Hogwarts Castle for display value, and diagon alley for actual play appeal. Although I would put it over the castle if it had gringotts, but oh well.
Personally diagon ally is the only one that ever really appealed to me. I will always gravitate to playsets over everything and design, figures and size makes it my favourite of the four
I went with the Hogwarts Castle primarily because it’s so unique and iconic not just in terms of Lego but any collectible model in general. It’s a conversation piece for anyone even remotely familiar with Harry Potter. It also looks expensive because of the detail and scale.

The castle and the icons are my favs and love mine. Love the builds and they look stunning once built. I don’t own Diagon Alley yet. Have no interest in the Hogwarts Express and am totally happy with the smaller version as it’s ridiculously overpriced set.

I had forgotten the Castle and the Icons had minifigs. But then again, they're not minifigs that go with the model, so that's probably why.
Hearing you speak about these sets and expanding them, I almost felt I needed another Hogwarts Express. That way you get an extra passenger cart and enough pieces to enlarge the platform. But then what would you do with the double minifigs? And the second loc and tender? Also you would increase the track, in which case the platform looks small again.
If only I had the money I would do it in a heartbeat. And also buy the case for the Castle.
You could reuse most of the mini figs if u replace their heads
It always amazes me how different LEGO fans see things. For me, the Hedwick Icon set is the winner BY FAR. To me, Diagon Alley is a children's play set, not for adult display, the Train looks incomplete and the Locomotive itself is one of the ugliest, most amateurish looking train builds I can imagine, and the Castle is just not that great looking to me, the colours make it look childish and maybe Ive just seen too many real castles in my life. So for me, as an adult looking for an awesome display set that is interesting, adult-compatible and just SCREAMS Harry Potter and the cutesy magical world of the first few movies (before the franchise was ruined), the Hedwick Icons set wins by a mile and a half.

I would be tied between Diagon Alley and Hogwarts Castle. I love how complete Hogwarts Castle looks, it is so recognisable too! People keep saying it will retire, then it gets moved along another year. I really need to buy it soon. And I am very much like you, I buy it and wonder where to display it after 😂 the minifigure scale Hogwarts Castle with the grey roof has been a nightmare (even though I prefer it to the newer one)!

To add to my previous comment, the way I use to store LEGO even if you, let’s say you have a single room normal sized room for just your LEGO I would buy had cover plastic boxes from Walmart $10-$15 big box now and zip blog bag your sets that you think you don’t think would look good displaying. That’s what I did !😅
My wife and I just finished building the Hogwarts Express. It is absolutely worth the money. I love how big it is because it definitely feels like you are getting your money’s worth. Also, I would recommend buying a black shelf that you can install on a wall where the train will be displayed on it going towards the Hogwarts castle. I was skeptical at first but this Lego set is so great. We are about to start on the Hogwarts Castle. It looks so awesome which is why I had to get it. Can’t wait
Great video my first choice is Hedwig, the castle, then daigon alley .I wouldn’t want the train it’s to big .
Surprised you went for the Hogwarts Express for build quality. Biggest letdown set of them all. Castle was best for me, then Diagon Alley, then train. Haven't built the moments set so no opinion on that!

Diagon Alley is definitely best, first I was planning on getting it then I change my mind on the train but really the only reason I wanted the train that much was for the figures so I’m probably going to get Diagon alley thanks for the video.
I don’t have the train ,but I do have the other three the Hogwarts Castle is my favourite as it’s just perfect and the fun build is great ! Then would be Diagon Alley so much fun and colour, but yes the mini figures are so disappointing!and the moments set,well I love it as it was a present from my better half but I had more excitement about the extra golden figures and stand! 😊

I enjoy the videos, but have to say this ranking makes no sense. Especially, like you pointed out, the expandability. Basically punishing high dollar sets (which shouldn’t need expansion) for being complete. And you reward the train for one of its biggest issues.
I have the castle and diagon ally and personally I think the castle is better definitely one of the best sets ever!

Great Video, but I have to disagree. For me the #1 is the castle, and I have Diagon Alley last. I think the HE gets a bit if a bad rap. Outside it being hard to display, I think it’s second best. I’ve never really cared about mini figures, but the recreation of iconic scenes inside individual compartments really appeals to me.
I’m hoping to get Diagon Alley after Christmas, ok if I’m honest I’m hoping to get it for Christmas 😜. Definitely the best of the 4 for me. The variety of the shops. The micro scale ruins the castle for me. I know a mini figure scale castle would be ridiculous…but I’d still be up for it 😈
Same here! I'm saving up to get this in time for Christmas (fingers crossed). This would be a nice display alonside the Hogsmeade Village Set. These building sets are such a vibe.

I never thought an AFOL would say a set is too big or too long. Hogwarts Express is not that difficult to display and several people wanted multiple carriages which would be even longer! However, a good point made saying that the Hogwarts Express feels incomplete but then again, you can say that with the Micro Scale Hogwarts and Diagon Alley. Diagon Alley has no entrance wall, no Gringotts, no Borgin and Burkes and various other shops are missing and Hogwarts is missing the Astronomy Tower, Quidditch Stadium, Forbidden Forest, Greenhouses and you could go on.

The train is rediculously big and expensive
The UCS Luke's Landspeeder is in my price range...but I don't want to build it! I'll just use the parts from it and the 3 engines look like something from the 1950's version of the Boeing 707 airliner. So I'll build a 707 MOC instead.
The Hogwarts Castle by far.
It's the most iconic location, the best build, best display, bigger room for expansion, and best bang for buck. The Hogwarts Express is the worst.

Sorry but, do minifigures need to be special to a set, HP Icons only include 3 Golden minifigures wich, are special but Diagon Alley has a lot more minifigures that also could be used and put in a normal hogwarts display
I've really become tired of the Star Wars sets and the price of the UCS sets vs. Harry Potter sets... I've become more interested in some of the Potter sets these days!
