We often get confused when we see a new growth as to whether it is a spike or a root.
In this video you will see few basic tips on how to identify both .
a root will always have a silvery colour when dry. it has a green tip which is the growth tip. A spike will be green in colour. when a spike matures it may turn red purple or remain green.
A root grows in the summer generally. spikes are generally produced in late autumn when temperatures start to cool down.
A root grows from the stem of the axis in case of a phalaenopsis. a spike will grow from the leaf joint.
In sympodial orchids roots always grow from the base of the orchid at the rhizome. roots are never seen on canes or pseudobulbs.
in sympodials spikes generally grow at the crown when a cane matures. occasionally spikes can also be seen growing one leaf down.
in case of oncidiums roots always grow at the base. spikes are formed at the base of the pseudobulb.
