"what kind of music does dream theater make?"
"yep"
Prog metal
Jordan Rudess reacts to Dream Theater - Octavarium 😂
🤭🤣🤣🤣
❤️😆
More like Cypher from Matrix
:D :D :D
Man that's is racist
*Dream Theater writing Octavarium*
*Rudess* John sit down
*Myung and Petruuci stare in wonder at Ruddess*
This song can easily be considered one of the best moments of Jordan Ruddess' career hands down
Dream Theater "A Change of Seasons" an absolute progressive metal masterpiece
and emotionnal!
That is a phenomenal song, I need it in my collection but I've just never got round to it.
Breaking all illusions is also great
@DylanG0125 correct
A Change of Seasons is an absolute piece of art which I clearly recommend to listen to. But I think James needs Images and words too.
Don't understand why, but I cry everytime I listen to this song
Because it's an emotional journey and it hits in ways hard to describe. Jordan Rudess' intro gets me everytime
Want an immersive and unforgettable experience with DT? Listen to the whole Metropolis pt.2 - Scenes From a Memory, album. A concept album with a beautiful story and extraordinary music. My favorite album of all time. It makes me discover Music. Thank you DT for that, always.
Totally agree. I'm a huge fan of concept albums and listen to alot of prog rock and Scenes From A Memory is one of the best concept albums of all time, or album in general. Its more like a audio-only musical, one big musical novel. So good! I wasn't that big of a fan of DT until I listened to that album and then it just clicked how much I like DT after that.
Their best release by far in my opinion. I rarely ever listen to DT anymore, but if I do it's going to be that album.
@@musicmademejester What about Ziltoid the Omniscient?
I agree! Definitely should do a listen of the complete Metroplis 2: scenes from a memory album .👍🏼👍🏼
I finally get to see them in concert in November! It’s the 20th anniversary of that album, and my understanding is they’ll be playing the whole thing. I cannot convey how excited I am about this. One of the best albums of all time.
I still get the goosebumps when hearing " Trapped inside this Octavarium!"
The only thing I truly hate about this version is that damn ending. I want the true ending which is Jordan playing a single note on the keyboard which is the start of The Root of All Evil (also the ending of In the Name of God). That final note Jordan plays truly completes the theme of the album, hence the story ending where it began.
"This is nowhere near as heavy as I thought it was going to be." Just wait, sir.
"Root"
I love how you immediately keyed into that Shine on You crazy Diamond vibe, which is exactly what they're going for that whole first movement. This song is sort of about cycles, and about building on what came before, and as a result there are many homages to their musical influences, both lyrically and sonically.
the more aggressive part towards the end has lyrics that reference the earlier songs on this album. The album itself is set in an octave with each successive song beginning a key above the previous, and this one key changing through an octave. it also ends with the same sound that began the first song on the album, and has other references to musical cycles, specifically the octave. you'll notice the balls on the cover are basically a piano starting an F and ending in F, with the birds between the strings representing the accidental sharps and flats
I remember spending so long reading analyses back in they day, Gawd I miss Mike Portnoy's writing and influence on them
Oh nice. I didn't realize that balls with birds representing sharps or flats. Nice trivia to add my trivia knowledge :).
Something to do with 'rocket science' ...
I love the 4th part (Intervals) with root to octave from Portnoy and small bits of the album in the background. And everything ends with "Trapped inside this Octavarium
".
Towards the end of the song, the lyrics summarize each song on the album:
(The Root of All Evil)
Our deadly sins feel his mortal wrath
Remove all obstacles from our path
(The Answer Lies Within)
Asking questions
Search for clues
The answer's been right in front of you
(These Walls)
Try to break through
Long to connect
Fall on deaf ears and failed muted breath
(I Walk Beside You)
Loyalty, trust, faith and desire
Carries love through each darkest fire
(Panic Attack)
Tortured Insanity
A smothering hell
Try to escape but to no avail
(Never Enough)
The calls of admirers
Who claim they adore
Drain all your lifeblood while begging for more
(Sacrificed Sons)
Innocent victims of merciless crimes
Fall prey to some madmen's impulsive designs
(Octavarium)
Step after step
We try controlling our fate
When we finally start living it has become to late
The first Prog song i ever listen to, my favorite song of all time.
It really is something else. You feel like you’ve watched a movie, or finished a novel after listening to it. Usually bands go for whole conceptual albums, but dt did a whole conceptual song (I know of metropolis pt.2 who doesn’t)
Holy shit. I don't even know where to start sugesting Dream Theater songs. I think the next obvious step would be A Change of Seasons. Another 24 minutes masterpiece by them.
Yes, this one.
The song "six degrees of inner turbulence" by Dream theater. One of the greatest pieces of music i have ever heard. About 40min of pure prog bliss👏👏👏👏👏
YASSSSS!!
TheCreepingDeath1984 it was intended to be a 40 minute suite but then Portnoy wanted to split it up so people wouldnt have to sift through the whole thing to listen to individual parts which would have been hard to do when it was released.
@@cscgaming25 ooh I did not know that thanks
Yeup, this.....
The synth keyboard at around 14:00 always gives me such Styx vibes and damn do I love me some Styx.
Other really good pieces by Dream Theater:
- whole album metropolis part 2: scenes from a memory, a concept album that should be listened to from beginning to ending
- count of tuscany
- a nightmare to remember
- the best of times
- ministry of lost souls
- change of seasons
- illumination theory
- breaking all illusions
- ... and many more
It is a good journey
Oh and i forgot six degrees of inner turbulence, especially the sexond half of the album. This is a 42 minutes long song, really good
It's even more impressive to see it played live. Check it out on the Score dvd. Epic!
This song is absolute masterpiece. The best their song. The history of prog rock/metal music in the one song.
Very simple to describe; this is not a typical composition for most people. It’s for well trained musicians who can understand every notes in the piece.
A neat thing about this song is that it reflects the musical influences that others have had on this band both in the musical themes and lyrics. There's references to Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Spock's Beard, Queen, Styx and Marillon to mention a few. Then they also reference their own songs from time to time. That is just scratching the surface as they have musical, mathematical, symbolic, and thematic references to cycles and patterns relevant to Dream Theater. It is a masterpiece in the vein of those from the real masters.
Peace...
That solo at the end bro ..
Makes me visualise a better world, without scarcity, without predation.
I send that wish to the universe.
Oh! And the entire intro to this song is all Jordan Rudess on keyboards and the Continuum, and lap steel guitar. He’s amazing.
Octavarium is an amazing concept, going from giving credits to their influences and then showing DT musicianship levels. You should also check the live version on Score.
At 29:00 you mention about music like this being in a "satisfying way (...) so different of what most people listen to". That's absolutely truth about DT music at Portnoy era, and I believe Six Degress of Inner Turbulence (the 8 song parts at 'disc two') is a such an underrated song, an absolutely masterpiece that really deserves a good review. The only review I found is from "u.u.u" (side note: Mike Portnoy himself made a comment in his video), funny guy that loved both albums but did some cuts and doesn't really get what is a concept album, so it's hard to transmit the real feeling . The "Gran finale" still gives me goosebumps after years listening. 42 minutes of pure joy that I highly recommend for you. I put this one above all other recommendations.
SDoIT is my favourit album with DT. Solitary Shell and forward is so good. And the last note is as epic as in Octavarium, amazing!
Keep up the dream theater. This is just scratching the surface. The Count of Tuscany next!
The count of tuscany is amazing. DT surely know how to write and perform masterpieces of music
He should start at the beginning, where the sound was created
One of the best songs ever written, the magnum opus of the album
The next (though bigger) beast from them should be: SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE or the entire album (which is basically one song/story) METROPOLIS PART 2: SCENES OF A MEMORY
Also: check out Octavarium (Score 20th Anniversary World Tour) if you want to see the best live version of this song.
My favorite part of this song is how it constantly calls back to previous parts within itself, and even parts within the octavarium album itself, and ends around the same melodies where the song started, and even ends on the same piano note on which the entire album starts, bringing home the whole point of the song, "we move in circles, and the story ends where it begins".
If you loved Octavarium (i love it too) My suggestion is to react to these Dream Theater’s songs “This Diyng Soul” “in the name of god” Breaking All Illusion” “Metropolis part 1” “Pull Me Under” “Dance Of Eternity” with all “Metropolis part 2” record, “Instrumedley” and over all “The Best Of Times” “The Count Of Tuscany”
This is a work of perfection. The guitar solo at the end gives me goosebumps all over, it's the perfect end to a perfect song. If you're after more DT, I would recommend Change of Seasons for something similar to this, or Glass Prison for something a bit heavier.
Really enjoyed your input at the end on this especially.
Oh, also six degrees of inner turbulence is amazing but it's 42 minutes long so be warned! I would actually recommend the live version from the XX album if you go for that, it takes it to the next level
The story ends where it begin... you can understand this line once you listen to the full album... hint hint, first song takes off where the last one left... we move in circles... thank you for reminding me how amazing this song is :)
The Count of Tuscany
Dream Theater The Count of Tuscany! This is a complete journey!
Your KORG Trinity has sounds made for Derek Sherenian:
"As a Korg endorsee, Sherinian was one of the first artists to adopt the Korg Trinity keyboard series in 1996. In collaboration with KORG sound designer Jack Hotop, they created Sherinian's signature "guitaristic" lead sound (the "Monster Lead", made famous on the Dream Theater album "Falling into Infinity") on the Trinity, as well as other, more "modern" and "aggressive" keyboard patches, owing to his fondness of guitar tones and technique."
Flipping Bloody Nora. Love it! Would be a great band name. Great reaction video. I’ve been a DT fan since their beginning. They pulled out all the stops on this one.
A Change of Seasons is a must
Why is Jordan Ruddes reacting to his own band as if he never listen to it?
🤔😆
This is both musically and artistically a monster. I love how the ending just builds and builds climaxing with the last horns bringing it ll to the maasive end. Outro flute feels like walking away.
You MUST check out the version of "Octavarium" from the 'Score" LIVE album. It's done with a full orchestra, and recorded at Radio City Music Hall, which has PHENOMENAL acoustics. It's one of the best LIVE recordings, in terms of overall quality I've ever heard. Believe it or not...it's even more epic than the studio recording!
as for DT suggestions...
change of seasons (24 minutes and likely their best song)
learning to live (my favorite from their 2nd album)
six degrees of inner turbulence (the entire 42 minute second disk, it's one song)
in the presence of enemies (it's split into 2 parts on the album)
scenes from a memory (the entire disk, it's all one story)
only a matter of time (best song from their debut album before labrie joined)
You kinda forgot about stream of consciousness- best instrumental they ever made.
And do them in that order. "A Change of Seasons" first!
Hi Jim, welcome to your DT journey ^_^
Global remark : usually, live version from Score, Budokan or Boston or Luna park are amazing and it brings the experience to another level.
Other masterpieces :
- a change of seasons
- illumination theory
- the count of tuscany
- a nightmare to remember
- breaking all illusions
- 6 degrees of inner turbulence (the song)
- in the presence of ennemies I+II
And plenty of shorter songs that are great too ^^
As an old fan.. My fav albums are Images & words and Awake by far
Around ‘93 or so I heard someone in my apartment building playing a Dream Theater live album, which surprised me since they hadn’t released a live album at that time. I stuck my head out the window and then stepped outside to try to place it. I followed it and discovered them about 5 blocks away playing at a downtown festival tent (Rochester, NY, US). My suggestion for more from them would be the YTSE Jam from their first album - still some rough edges but lots of fun - and Home from the Metropolis Pt 2 album. Hope your new addition is doing well!
Oh man! What a cool little story :D. Funny how you thought it was coming from your Apt. :). Sounds like a "Video" for DT!
The little fill at 12.44 kills me every time.
Mike fucking Portnoy. He is always being so creative.
Yes, same!
Yes, thank you. Great band, great music. Especially live.
Would be great If you would review more of them.
You also reviewed only one song of the band Ayreon...so maybe..
(Sorry, two songs)
The intro is played by Rudess with continuum fingerboard and slide steel guitar (from about 4:40 onwards)
Listen to Symphony X - The Odyssey. And You'll be amazed by another masterpiece. An amazing band that should had more recognition.
I second this.
@@Elviolli And Myrath also :p
Haken are quite good too
I third this.
This track is a tribute to all the bands that inspired them along the years, that's why you can find a lot of similarity with Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and some others in different passages of the song. It's one of my favs for sure.
I love your reaction and i love D.T. This is a Masterpiece !
"Beyond this life" by Dream Theater, live in Budokan............how can you not listen to it? You'll thank me ;-
I've said this before somewhere else, but to me this is basically Dream Theater doing 70s prog. And I love it.
This is their best song for sure.. they have moments in other songs, but nothing as brilliant overall.
my favorite pink floyd song is "shine on you crazy diamond", so naturally when i first heard this it blew my fucking mind.
@@movietimeateds69 Same here. Mine is Echoes but well - Pink Floyd :D
try the whole metropolis pt.2. personally i think that was their peak.
Count of Tuscany or Six Degrees are their other huge songs, and of course the album Scenes from a memory.
Nice Opeth LP in the background :)
Opeth is one of the all time greatest bands imo. So damn good.
Please next DT song should be The Count of Tuscany
I absolutely agree :-)
X2. That's not a song. That's an experience in a different dimension
Epic. Yes.
Great song
@@KevinMooreFan33 Hey I'm a Kevin Moore fan too. Hell Mary is the best song by him ever made.
If you like Octavarium, I suspect you would also like A Change of Seasons. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is another masterpiece, but can be heavy going due to its length and dark subject matter.
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is fucking amazing, I agree
The tears always well up whenever I listen to this sonic masterpiece. It is so evocative of so many emotions. This opus is exquisite.
Listening to full circle are lyrical references to music songs groups or albums that influenced the singer
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Sailing the seven seas, queen
Pink floyd and the who, ramones are but a few mentioned
DT-Glass Prison 🔥🔥🔥🔥
You just used Majestic and Astonishing as words to describe their music. Majesty is their original name (ytse jam ;)) and The Astonishing is one of their recent albums. Man I love how you do listen and embody the music! Much Love and Support for the channel!
The octavarium album is by far my favorite album by dream theater. Its such a great album. There are definetly weaker moments, but every song is incredible in its own way.
No, no, no, dive deep... please!
this song is absolutely loaded with rhythmic and melodic symbolism and references, and so astonishingly lyrically advanced and beautiful.
In my opinion it is only matched by their own concept albums, Metropolis Part 2 (theater/opera) and Six Degrees of inner Turbulence(rocks harder).
Don't stop with this one!! Too many reactors just hear a couple of Dream Theater songs and stop. They have so much more amazing, beyond super epic music with a bunch of hidden gems. Just keep reacting to more Dream Theater!!
Dream Theater "A Change of Seasons" is THE Masterpiece. Then, to have something different, fast and mindblowing "Recahrging the void" by Vecktor!
I love A Change of Seasons, but I think in Octavarium they put the different section to lead in to each other better. There is of course this middle part in Octavarium where they kind of show of their skill which has a bit abrubt changes, but that's part of you expect from DT song :). But otherwise Octavarium flows quite well from section to section and has nice arc of development in it. That's something that isn't in A Change of Seasons in my opinion although the individual sections are great. All that said A Change of Seasons is also one of my favorite DT songs. For someone shorter I would recommend Scarred which I love and don't see too many recommendation. Also I wouldn't suggest Jim the Glass Prison. I don't think that's not much of his style and that song usually gets lots of recommendations. Just some of my thoughts :)
My most favourite song from DT 🥰🥰🥰
also listen to anything by PLINI. he's very new in the game
Plini fucking rocks.
Next you have to listen to Blind Faith by them. Not one of the most popular songs by DT but one of their best! 12 minutes of pure eargasm!!
Skiappah ! One of their criminally most under-appreciated songs!
It comforts me how well you get this song, that guitar solo near the end gets me every time, experience octavarium live was an unforgetable moment for me at age of 12 in 2005.
You should check “Lines in the Sand” if you want to enjoy their groovy side, and one of the most spectacular Petrucci’s solos of all time.
This song is like a musical journey thru progressive music history. Fantastic.
A change of seasons is the Master piece.
And metropolis part 2 (album)
Images and words (album)
Awake (album)
You should react to Dream Theater: The Count of Tuscany. It does the same "Big Sweeping Arc" thing that Octavatium does with the build up, but it's a little shorter (about 17 minutes I think) and just like how Octavarium has more time being calm then heavy, The Count of Tuscany has about half and half, if not it's more heavy sided. BUT it still has that "Big Arc" feel to it. I think you'll really like and appreciate it!!
Just amazing to see someone listening to Octavarium for the first time. Great video. I subscribed.
This is the first time I bumped into your channel, and I just loved your reaction. This is my favorite song in the world, it really makes me feel special things.
It's a song that makes me weep with joy...crazy good
. . . . now Jim, _watch_ the Live version on the DVD "Score"! To see them play it all together, and to experience keyboardist Jordan Rudess playing with all his "toys" :D. The end guitar melody is what always gets me, if I'm in the right frame of mood, it makes me tear-up, it's such a beautiful and simple melody, and a perfect way to lead up to the grand ending of the epic piece.
As you said Jim, this music that MANY of us listen to on a regular basis, to the _average_ Pop/Top 40 listener, or any layman that listens to _other_ music, its gonna' shock people that humans can create music like this. It challenges EVERYONE that listens to it (if its good or bad). But I think as well, many people could gravitate to it because it is different and it gets them out of their comfort zone, as it is not offensive, it may be a bit _heavier_ than they are used to, but its not coarse.
I don't know why (which me and former drummer Mike Portnoy has commented on) "Dream Theater" persay, get to be the poster child of the Prog Metal "Whipping Boy", since many came before, during and after them, and sooooooo MANY bands in Progressive Rock and Prog Metal to choose from - _they_ get such a reaction to what they do. I personally love "James LaBrie", he fits with the music (and his solo material is awesome). I've been a fan since their debut "When Day and Dream Unite" and their original vocalist "Charlie Dominici's" style/tone (sort-of in vein of Steve Perry), and I was actually disappointed when he was let go, and when LaBrie came on for "Images & Words", it took time, but I came to love and accept that he is the voice of DT. But I noticed when LaBrie sang WDADU tracks, it was harder for his style and cadence to keep-up with the way the lyrics were written (it was a mouthful). So you can tell that both vocalists had different abilities that made them unique, co-writing or "tweaking" the songs to make it fit their personal styles.
I always looked at "Epics" (_____________ < insert band or track) and its subparts as scenes from a movie, or like sliding panels of Art or slides, representing what the lyrics/subject matter of what the song is about. Kansas did that for me in 1977 as a 14 year old and awakened my senses to what music could be, and I have been blessed to hear (and see) many bands and genres created that made me realize the importance of music and its creativity. And those that produce certain kinds of music that challenges the artists themselves, and for us to soak it all in and discover something new.
Another thing that always gets me; When people rail on DT's so-called "style" - so they harp on their noodling or "wankery/wank fest". I mean, this is Progressive Rock & Prog Metal right? This isn't AOR Radio Rock or again, Top 40/Pop music, if you wanted "songs" that fit a formula . . . you came to the WRONG music :p (Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, ELP and more got the same scrutiny back in the day. Hell, let's add Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner and others ;). BUT . . . .does ANYone give DT credit for their toned-down/pulled back _songs_ like; "Another Day", "Speak to Me" (especially the live version), "Eve", "Space Dye Vest", "Lifting Shadows off a Dream", "Anna Lee", "Tear down these Walls", "The Answer Lies Within" and many others?
DT's style is actually _all over the place_ on 1 album, which gives us all variety, and they are 1 band in an endless sea of choices and sounds.
I agree with you Jim wholeheartedly that many (not all, you gotta' search for others) of today's era of "Prog Metal" is Djent oriented, which I don't mind, but like DT, I do have few tracks that I couldn't get into, or albums I listen to less. But more and more I see comments like; "I love Progressive Rock!" And proceed to name 5 Djent type Prog Metal bands, or their love for Prog Metal and mention all the newer bands that have Djent or Death Metal (or even Mathcore) tropes. All the "classic" bands have been forgotten, and then you get the comments; "Yeah I don't like Queensryche and Dream Theater bands". It's a generation (for the most part, not all of you) that is used to the more aggressive, riffy, 4/4 groove, and/or the rougher/cookie monster (with the occasional screaming...) vocalist, that can also sing melodically that _leans_ to that Djent sound.
It has become much like Metalheads that won't get out of their comfort zone, are stuck in the box of the 80's and 90's, I guess it's become cyclical for each era of a new sound. Everyone is trying to "fit-in" to a niche, instead just taking the music for what it is, and looking at the bigger picture - different styles exist out there for every taste and every mood. Some do it well, some don't, like any other musics. But I am soo grateful that these bands, that don't make bank like the muzak "entertainers", craft "music", just because they can. And there is an audience open enough to be challenged and understand dissonance, virtuosity, lyrics that say more, and demand each of us to actually _listen_ to the music presented, no matter if the song is 5 minutes, or as long as an album :). But I like variety, I have to have more that 1 style to choose from.
*Dream Theater Recommends.*
Okay Jim! Try tracks from my personal favorite album "Awake"! Their 3rd album, and the last album with their original and awesome keyboardist Kevin Moore (who also wrote lyrics), who would also create some solo music that you would LOVE (Kevin Moore, and "Chroma Key", he took on a VERY different style of playing) and co-found, with Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos, and Mike Portnoy; "OSI" (Portnoy I read once, described them as "if Dream Theater met Radiohead"). Also, as others have mentioned, the track "Change of Seasons" (with their 2nd keyboardist "Derek Sherinian"). Try their shorter songs to get a feel of their various styles.
. . . And lastly, please delve into more *Fates Warning* (maybe the newer material); as Portnoy quoted in a FW re-issue; _"Very often fans and critic credit Dream Theater for creating a whole new genre of progressive metal music in
the late '90s/early '90s, But the truth is Fates Warning were doing it years before us"_ .

- Another great reaction Mr. Newstead, reminds me of when discovering many bands in the late 80's early 90's that would start me on a new journey :).
100 % agree Prof Tony 🤘
Love your reactions from Turkey, Jim! :)
just found your channel with this reaction. Only watched 5 minutes so far... subscribed!
Incredible reaction 👏
Now it’s just missing a change of seasons.thanks for the video!
Best DT reaction i saw so far...
He reacts just like me at my first time listen to this masterpiece...
Jim - It's not as heavy as i thought it would be
DT - Hold these beers
The Whirlwind by transatlantic that is a song to leave you in awe
Great song and reaction.
DT recommendations are quite tough, because their catalogue is so massive. I'll try some, including some brief information. Maybe that will help you decide?
A Change of Seasons (I guess it was their first true long epic from '95, good to know that one)
Stream of Consciousness (their best instrumental track, great changes, melodies, technique that blows your mind and more, especially good if you're not the biggest LaBrie fan ;-) ...)
In the Presence of Enemies (a 2-piece long track that has it all, from the follow-up record to Octavarium)
The Ministry of Lost Souls / Sacrified Sons (2 beautiful half-ballads!)
In the Name of God (the masterpiece off their "heavy-metal record", heavy as f**k with insane shredding parts and riffs)
The Count of Tuscany (another beautiful long-track that tells a great story and has a very beautiful and surprising middle-section)
God there's so much more, but maybe these are a good start! Enjoy the channel a lot, looking forward to it!
If the song came out before 1977, it should have been on the Voyager that flew into space.
Thats how i had felt the way uve felt listening dream theater!! They r the start n end of music, mother music of music!!!
Thanks for the continued content Jim! Per my previous requests I'd also like to mention Horizons by Puscifer.
Amazing reaction to Octavarium! This song I'll admit was not my favorite epic by them at first, but as I began to fully understand and comprehend the song, all of the nods and links to previous songs on the album and in the progressive rock and metal world, I fell in love with the song. It has since became one of my favorite songs of all time, it pretty much eclipses everything else.
Awesome video, loved your insight. You earned a subscription.
Two Words : Illumination Theory
This is going to be one Hell of a ride for you.... Can't wait to watch as you go through each Phase..... But I know you are going to love it...... Enjoy
I liked this vid, editor , Jim Newstead. He shows sensitive impressions the song deserves. I've wathed another reaction by a man called himself "Composer/Musian". He listened 5 min of the song and said "Nothing happened yet".
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance is the biggest track from DT...It's equally grand and equally good!
I've heard hundreds of thousands of songs in any genre, but this is the best of them all.
Check out Trial of Tears from Dream Theater!
especially live from Budokan
Greg Pfeffer Underrated DT song
@@elBanananas I prefer Once in a Live Time. Kevin Moore's keyboard solo there is out of this world.
@@bcc91 Kevin left the band in 94, and OIAL was recorded in 97 or 98, when Derek Sherinian was their keyboardist. So Derek's actually the one playing that amazing solo!
@@Meemaw567 I'm so sorry, I knew that! I meant Derek! Thanks for pointing it out =D
One of the best composition by DT
I like your video reaction, boss... Your reaction is completely natural and very very touching our hearts.
There are a lot of these epicly long songs in the world of prog music. I recommend “the great escape“ by seventh wonder.
Maybe you'll find some new ones here (the _next_ chapters are linked in each description) :D . . .

Another vote for A Change of Seasons. Blew my 16 year old mind back in 96, and still essential listening now!
First, when listening to DT never worry about how long the song is. There are always so many time signatures it's often like listening to several songs in one. And you are never bored. What to recommend is hard to say. They have been around since the late 80's and pretty much release an album every 2-3 years. They have plenty of epic like songs like the ones mentioned below but they have a few concept albums and in one case a series of albums that belong together as one big concept. Me personally I like anything live by them as they are even more amazing when you watch them play this complex music. And they have tons of live things to choose from on here. My personal favorites are "Home." "In the Name of God" and "Six degrees" but others like "Change of Seasons" "Metropolis" and "The Count of Tuscany" are Epic and great as well. And there are many more than them that I would love by any other band the most but are behind the ones mentioned by me before for them. The whole "Six degrees" album is epic in nature but so are so many others. You see my problem? I mention one and four more pop into my head. LOL. Just stay away from the "Astonishing." Compared to the rest of their music that is not that good. It's their "Mr. Roboto." LOL.
Great reaction I could really tell how much you were getting into the music as you listened.
Love this band
I've always heard the keyboard solo as a tribute to Rudess's influences: you can hear him mimicking the styles of Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson. My favourite DT album is Awake, so I would recommend listening to 6.00, Caught in a Web, or Scarred. Of their recent material, the first verse of Breaking All Illusions is the proggiest thing on earth: it cycles between 7/8, 6/8, 5/8, 4/8 and 3/8 each bar.
I would suggest Scarred of those. That song is not reacted much on other channels and I think it's my favorite song on Awake album.
DT's In the presence of enemies part 2 is pretty epic as well. You may enjoy listening to the bands Nightwish, Epica, and Kamelot too
I swear Chris Squire showed up for a while. This song is the definition of epic. What a trip!
