New Prog? These guys have been around since ‘82. Pre-date Tool by a long way. The bands they probably get compared to most are Queensryche or Dream Theater. One of my favorite bands. Inside Out is a top five of all time for me.

I mean this in the nicest way because I love both bands and both these songs, but I realized lately than this is basically Haken's A Change of Seasons. Similar themes, similarly incredible music

fun fact, that last part of the song is actually the band in their recording cabin, just jamming. This song came from that jam session, and they put that in there, and i think thats amazing

This band is so slept on. Fauna was easily my favorite album of 23.

a lot of symphony x's songs should be listed to as whole albums. they are metal operas, for example Iconoclast is about an AI that brings about armageddon, or the new mythology suite tells the tale of the fall of atlantis and the death and rediscovery of ma'at's teachings.

Aside from being a tribute to henshall's father, this is also about the near extinction of the white rhino. What a great song. Beautiful and sad. Always brings tears to my eyes.

I would suggest the best of times for the next Dream Theater reaction. It is just as epic and a very beautiful and personal song.

The song was written by Richard Henshall about the death of his father, so it's a deeply personal song lyrically and probably difficult to pick apart without input from him I'd imagine. Ross Jennings' vocals on this are outstanding.

I'm preaching to the converted, but I honestly think that Haken are the finest of all of the prog rock/metal bands right now. I listen to a lot of different bands, but nothing compares to them.

I think the most Prog song on the Images and Words is: Metropolis Part I: The Miracle and the Sleeper. Great song, lotta time changes.. its a really good journey of a song.

As some has said this is Kevin on keys but that keys break down where you asked if that was just Keys, it's also Petrucci playing note for note along w/ the Keys. I've seen them play this live quite a few times w. Kevin, Derek and Jordan and every time that part just gives me goosebumps as to just how tight they all are.

Interesting song, definitely different, I dig it. Also the singer is fantastic and vocal melody is catchy. Parts of this reminds me a little of Soan but more interesting.

For me the best Symphony X song is Awakenings. You can try it.

saw them open for Coheed & Cambria back in ‘15 & I was hooked immediately 🤘🏻🔥🍻 they opened with this & I was dumbstruck 🤯 check out ‘My Famed Disappearing Act’ as well. all 3 of their first albums are all great

I'm a prog fan. Looking at your recent reactions, I've seen both Haken and Big Big Train live. While I wouldn't call Band-Maid prog, they do have everything I love about prog (well, everything except 10+ minute epics). My favourite band, and the tip of the iceberg that is the incredible Japanese rock and metal scene. Edit: I subscribed, both for Band-Maid and for the prog

Symphony X suffers the same thing as many other Prog Metal bands do, but they just sound better doing it; they haven't learned that sometimes less is more. Take classic bands like Yes and Rush, they knew when to hold back. You had guitarists like Steve Howe whose solos were off-beat, and weird sounding, but rarely played an actual solo despite playing lead riffs throughout many Yes songs. Then you had Alex Lifeson who could shred with the top tier of the shredders, but held back to weave in rhythms, and oddball chord arrangements while the bass or drums took the spotlight for a few seconds and on many songs, never even played a solo or lead section despite the insane talent he has for doing so. Symphony X kills me because these guys are good, they're really fucking good! But their really early songs are just so far out in Left Field, that you can't wrap your brain around the instrumentation, or their newer stuff is super loud and heavy with just a wall of sound being blasted at you. IMO they reached their peak at The Odyssey in the early 2000's, with the right blend of complexity and melody. Before that, their songs would just kind of trail off and lose you in the cosmos, and after, they would cause blunt force trauma to your ears.

This is a great album! My favorite is Elephants Never Forget. I hope you enjoyed the concert!! I saw them on March 8th and second performance on the 9th on Cruise to the Edge. Absolutely amazing! I also played bass and backing vocals on Cockroach King on the cruise for Late Night Live. I ran into Richard and Conner before their second show and told them about us playing their song and they said they heard it. If you want to know more check out the video on my channel

I think Oblivion is my least favourite track on an otherwise superb album. Miramare being my favourite.
