With the software updates on my Macbook Air, it is all different with different terminology. It doesn't say "location" or 'preferences." I had my card reader showing for a while and now it doesn't show. I've never seen it on my desktop though.We have the apple icon, system settings and the rest that I see in this video does not show.

Covered everything except what I want. Was looking at some old SD cards (wanted to do a bit of copying) but found they all come up as unwritable (I've tried the toggle), so I'm assuming it's something to do with my OS (10.11.6), but these cards used to work on my older Mac...?

exfat usually works , but if not - go for ms-dos fat
