Large forehead -> Hair down Weak jaw -> Hair up Petite -> Hair up Broad shoulders -> Hair down Low neck -> Hair up I’ll just shave my hair and hide in a corner.
You’re perfect the way you are. We are all unique and beautiful and shouldn’t compare ourselves with others. Coming from a 4’10, petite, small forehead, frizzy hair, glasses and pear shaped face, and my jaw seems wide. Yet I am beautiful to my boyfriend, and sometimes I feel cute too. :)
Finally, a thorough explanation. I am 5’1” , I have thin hair and a short neck. Your video has made me realize that the ideal hairstyle for me is an updo with wispy, long bangs to cover my jawline. The updo will give the impression of a longer neck, I should fluff up the top to give myself height, and the side hairs/bangs will slim my face. Thank you so much!!
As a pear shape face, I can tell you you are correct! But it must have volume top and sides, of course. I have some hairdressers that pull it too tight on the sides= no balance. But when I stick a clip in back and let top and sides have volume and tendrils: voila! Why can’t hair stylists LISTEN? Thanks, great job.
Yes she is incredibly thorough and accurate. I have a pear-shaped face. I've always been told that I look better with my hair up. I took a 2 year Cosmetology course and I STILL couldn't pinpoint the reason for this until watching this video. She also specified that these face shapes need more volume at the crown of the head which is exactly true.
I never thought this out in full but I just had to click on this video after watching your other one on bangs. So grateful you discuss these topics, Chi! Im about to see my hairstylist tomorrow so these have been super helpful. 🙏
might sound a bit stuck up but I now get why people always say I look much better with my hair up... cheek bones and big, almond eyes. I might never put my hair down after watching this video now 😅 thank you, Chi!! 💕
I agree. I have the same features and I feel like hair down just makes my head look big and I look plain. I also have a short neck lol. I wish i looked good with my hair up or down, but when I have my hair up, I feel elegant and ⭐️magical⭐️ lol.
Also keep in mind the idea of contrast when choosing jewelry. If your earrings are going to be hanging in front of dark skin or dark hair, a lighter/brighter color will stand out more. If your hair/skin is pale, you might want darker jewelry. So if you have light skin and dark hair, or the opposite, whether your hair is up or down may impact the color you choose for your earrings.
I've been trying to figure out for the longest why I look very weird and basic with my hair up but so much prettier with my hair down and this explains a lot. So glad I came across this video!! 💕
Thank you for putting it here , I have short height with broad shoulders I usually have my hair's up and when I wear sleeveless clothes it looks so weird now I get to know how to deal with it !! Thanks a lot
I'm a tall woman, but was pleasantly surprised to gain some added knowledge from your videos. This is the third in a row I've watched because they are well edited, chick full of useful information, and you present like an experienced and elegant instructor. Thank you! Keep up the excellent work! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great tips except it is hard to implement them all. For a petite girl with inverted triangle shape, I should wear my hair up to make me look taller, but wear hair down to expand the size of my head to play down the relative width of my shoulders. So what do we do there when we have features with opposite suggestions? 🤷🏻♀️
I guess it depends on what ur main priority is. If ur wearing something that exposes ur shoulders u can wear ur hair down with heels. And if ur wearing flat , u can wear a style of clothes that narrows ur shoulders and take ur hair up. Eventually shortness i dont think is an issue to correct but depends on the style and the mood.
I’m not petite (I’m 5’10”!) but your videos have helped me SO much! I never noticed how hair up/down impacts the face. Mine definitely looks better down and I never knew why or if it was subjective. Now I know it’s because of my fuller face and broader shoulders.
Recently found your channel, and the advice is great! There are so many moments where I'm like "so that's why I like this!" or "so that's why I don't like that on me!" Same with this video!
Thank you for the tips! I find them pretty much explained why I look almost sickish when I have my hair down. Personally, I look a lot better with a pony tail or simply boyish short hair. I have prominent cheek bones and my eyes stand out the most on my face, while I have a more square face and sharper jawline, when I have long hair and put my hair down, it cuts my face to a weird shape and the top of my head looks super flat. I'm 5'7 and pretty average, but my neck is short, hair up certainly suits me better.
Me too. Sometimes I want to look shorter than my 1,73 m so I apply the opposite advice. I'm also apple shaped, so her videos about that are very useful.
I’m a 5’3 with rather narrow shoulders and oval face with high cheekbones. When I wear a headband or pick up my hair always get compliments right away. Been letting it grow only up to shoulder length is soft wavy but tons of volume. Now in Sumner I keep in ponytail often especially if gardening or cleaning my home. It does feel cooling on the neck. Lol! I love for special ocasiona like weddings picking up hair in a soft pony tail but let some tendrils loose on front of face and even place some flower on pony tail! Looks so pretty and feminine all the time! Of course, right dress, makeup and everything else.
Great video Chi! I watch several hairstyling videos and almost no one covers this. I too look better with my hair down or in a side braid if it’s hot out. It frames my face 💜
Ohhh this is so helpful! I have always wondered why I always feel like I look better with my hair up/pulled back, but it seems like most people feel prettier with their hair down. This makes sense! Thank you!
What’s my face shape? 1. one side back, one side front when it’s down. 2. middle part separated, half ponytail (fairy style??). 3. middle part separated, lower ponytail. I have high cheekbones & pronounced jawline, small almond eyes, small face.
Thank you so much. This video has answered almost all of my questions about why I look better with my hair up. The only question left for me is that I have very volimunious hair and an oval (very close to round) face with high cheekbones and normal to slightly narrow forehead. I am also tall and have broad shoulders. How do I reverse the bad look that having my BIG hair down gives me because of covering my whole face? Should I tell my hairdresser to use thinning scissors to have the volume down? Thanks again for helping through this video! 💖💖💖
I'm petite, have broad shoulders and have a round face. I think I'll try a half up, half down hair style so I get a balance between the height and length. Good video :)
I think there is more to this conversation that you could explore. There are tons of tutorials on UA-cam about how to wear your hair and makeup according to your facial shape, height, and body type. You don't seem to use any contouring techniques to elongate your round face. Your hair doesn't seem to have many layers to help add volume. You're a beautiful lady, Chi, but there are ways of wearing your hair up that would look lovely on you. I hope you don't give up on finding the perfect sexy up-do. 💖
Thank you Chi, I’m 5’2 and have shorter neck with broad shoulders. If I just take a picture of my face I feel I look better with hair up, but when I zoom out and take picture of my whole body, the rest of my body looks better with my mid length hair down. I want the best of both, am I asking for too much?
You can do a half bun or a half ponytail look in that way u look taller and the hair that's not in the bun or ponytail can make broad shoulders look narrow 🥰
Coming from the 60's, the norm was long hair for EVERYBODY! It stuck with me. Plus, I think it is still the norm, to have some length. But some of us have wavy, hard to manage hair. A length change is a different look. But I still prefer some length. I think I'm a rectangle face, with the jaw. So, down was right (oops!).
This explains why I like Halle Berry and Nia Long so much better with short hair (particularly, the pixie). Long hair on Halle Berry makes her look plain and just like everyone else. Nia Long has a short neck, but she has a striking, beautiful eye shape, almost like half moons/semi-circles.
I was thinking the same, several of the hair up examples look great with short hair...I'm a short hair girl and know that I look terrible with long hair (or I guess down hair). I have a small head and short neck.
@@jennbetween8842 you look so good with the haircut in your profile picture! I wish I could pull off that haircut, but I think my face and jaw are really big lol. I have a big forehead, cheeks, and jaw.
I had a jaw operation for medical purposes and its changed the shape of my face so now i feel confused, the set hair styles i came to love and fewl comfortable in now dont work and i feel so lost with my new face but your videos are helping me regain confidence, thank you ❤
I’ve always looked better with my hair up, pixie, short bobs, and other short hair cuts looked amazing on me. I love viking/Nordic braids on hair so Im currently growing it out purely for that. Currently it’s a long bob barely touching my shoulders. I have a heart face and broad shoulders, having long hair down hides all my best features so I would always wear it half up revealing my check bones and jaw line (my favorite things about myself, I have a V jawline and check bones create a nice balance and heart shape). It would also make my face seem longer, I do have bangs now so it definitely looks better (above the eyebrow type, U, V, and regular above the brow bangs. U and V looked best on me creating an even more heart appearance especially if i do my hair my favorite way, diamond fluff shape think peridot. I also have green hair.). When I do have that long hair back I’m only eating my hair up or half up to really show my face and still balance out everything on my body.
Lovely video! I’m not petite! I’m 5’4.5 And I’m also Flamboyant natural in the kibbe system! My shoulders slightly broad but, I look better with with my hair up since my face and eyes may be my best feature. I also have ingenue essence and I’m skinny so it just makes me look cute!
I have a wide jaw and rectangle face shape. I also have broad shoulders. So this explains why people prefer my hair down. But of course it might just be because they LOVE my hair. I get compliments all the time on my locks
I always have my hair down besides both sides of my face covering my ears because I feel like the shape of my face looks more defined in that way. I have a lot of baby hair in front part and it stands when I have my hair in ponytail. I have a narrow forehead, weak jawline, oval-round face shape. You're right about the jaw looking more round when the hair is up in my case. I don't have a particular big facial features like my eyes are not that big. No wonder I feel confident that I look good with my hair down but not when hair is up.
Haven't watch the video yet but for me is hair down. It isn't for my face shape, but to cover my broad shoulder. I actually look like an hourglass with my shoulders covered 😢😢
I'm very short, 5'0", with narrow shoulders, but i always wear my hair down.. why? My face is VERY thin and narrow and sharp. Having a just above shoulder length messy bob. It doesnt hang on my narrow shoulders, but also draws attention up and makes my face appear much softer and rounded. So while the up/down is true, another thing to consider is length!
Nice topic shi! I found ur hair down looks better on u and contrasts ur white colour with the black hair, it s nicer. And it s not too long that it will crowd ur length
Wow you hit the nail on the head!!! I could never pin it down why some women look good with their hair up…. good example… Jerry Ryan as Seven of Nine in Star Trek. with her hair in the French twist she is unbelievable gorgeous like a goddess. When you see her with her hair down and all of a sudden she doesn’t even look pretty. Go figure.
I honestly thought it was from our forehead/hairline to our chin that our face would get determined cause then it’s an oval shape that I have if it’s the Entire face. If it’s just the short trimmed look of our eyebrows to lips as in the video, I could even fit into the square *(or rather precisely diamond shape based off a generator like faceshape online)* category. I do have an angular jawline; well defined. 🤔 Random. I’ve never seen facial shapes get measured like in this videos’ drawing example… It’s interesting!
I'm getting shorter (:-() now 5'3 1/2, and older (61). I've had short hair most of my life, partly because I have a good amount of hair that tends to get large easily, and I've felt--if my weight was on target, I struggle--that big hair on my big head and relatively small body is just...weird. But, I had a very specific haircut that, during covid, was very hard to maintain, so I decided to grow it out, and I'm really struggling! I have a square face, square jaw for sure, fairly prominent cheekbones, deep set eyes, and a big/lumpy nose. I actually think my now almost completely silvery blonde hair is pretty, pretty sure it's my best natural feature at this point, but I feel ugly IN it. Straight is no good, curly is probably better but my natural curl is irregular and even when I curl it, it falls out quickly. I have tried face framing layers, bangs, side bangs, no bangs, up (with a lot of bobby pins, not quite long enough yet,) up with pieces around my face, now--because I cut myself a very thin fringe--up with a bit of a bang...I feel unkempt, (I really don't know how people manage with their hair always falling in their face; I could manage a long bang but my hair is thick enough, I guess, that I literally can't see if I tilt my head, which I do a lot because, as luck would have it, I'm a hairdresser, who mostly cuts short hair because I had it for so long.) It's a "first world problem," for sure, but...just weird how much I think about it now, where when it was short, even if it was cut badly or just not working, there usually wasn't too much I could do about it. Hah! Thanks for letting me vent!
My hair looks horrible up despite i am short. lol. its cuz i have a tall forehead and am super pale with a rounded oval face so it just ends up accentuating that. i've had bangs off and on over the years which definitely helps but i hate how they feel sticking to my forehead in hot weather. usually when i try and wear it down i just end up throwing it back up into a bun cuz i just cant stand it down even if it does look better down. its a struggle XD
I am tall and wide shoulders and high cheek bones. Is it better for me with hair up? I feel so uncomfortble but maybe its better. Also for tall girls is it better with long or short hair?
This wasn't massively helpful, because the info for round face conflicts with the earlier video and none of it helps if you have a short neck, when you don't want things round your neck (as I understand it).
Excellent, thanks ! What if like you, I have round face, high cheekbones, petite, narrow shoulders, medium wavy hair which all point to better have hair up But would make fleshy cheeks stand out too because exposed?
Hello, Jackie! A few loose tendrils keep things casual and conveniently out of the face. And when it comes to flattering looks for round faces a good choice of style would be half-up, half-down; it allows for a little height, and the loose hair can be tonged to soften the look. ☺️
I usually wear it down since I’m growing out a short cut. I’ve watched videos about flattering haircuts for age and face shape. I think I’m on the right track
I look better with my hair down, but I don't like having hair near my face, is uncomfortable. As soon as I arrive home, I always make a bun and wear my bangs up too, the same when I just get up. But when I go out I normally use my hair down.
Doesnt matter. You just need to find a good hairstyle for your type for both, hair up and hair down. Its the same thing with "people with long faces should wear long hair" 🙄
Large forehead -> Hair down
Weak jaw -> Hair up
Petite -> Hair up
Broad shoulders -> Hair down
Low neck -> Hair up
I’ll just shave my hair and hide in a corner.

Love this video. Do you ever give a private consult? Reside in New Jersey. 😉
Go figure.
Thank you! Sometimes you just need some tips/advice so you can find the one that suits you 😉
I honestly thought it was from our forehead/hairline to our chin that our face would get determined cause then it’s an oval shape that I have if it’s the Entire face.
Your content is - EXCELLENT.
Thank you so much for appreciating! ❤️
My face looks like a brinjal with my hair up 🤣
I'm getting shorter (:-() now 5'3 1/2, and older (61).
Hello, Cindy! I really appreciate you taking the time to express that. I hope this video helped you ☺️❤️
Thank you SO much! Your explanations are helping to decide about bangs!
I'm glad to hear that, Theresa! ☺️
BUT ... BUT I HAVE A BROAD SHOULDER AND I'M 4'11 IDK IF I'LL HOLD IT UP OR DOWN LOL
I am tall and wide shoulders and high cheek bones. Is it better for me with hair up? I feel so uncomfortble but maybe its better. Also for tall girls is it better with long or short hair?
Can’t really put my hair up since I wear a hair topper so I’m just gonna stick to wearing it down 🤣
This wasn't massively helpful, because the info for round face conflicts with the earlier video and none of it helps if you have a short neck, when you don't want things round your neck (as I understand it).
True about the long, voluminous, dark hair. I'm 5'2 and when my hair is long, I feel like it swallows me and I disappear into it lol
IDK…they look great either up or down.
Me with a pixie cut: *interesting*
Excellent, thanks ! What if like you, I have round face, high cheekbones, petite, narrow shoulders, medium wavy hair which all point to better have hair up But would make fleshy cheeks stand out too because exposed?
Hair up or hair down all women are beautiful. Wear your hairstyle with confidence
I agree with that 👍
I like it better when my hair is down
When I have bangs, it's prettier for me to have hair up BUT when I have no bangs It's prettier hair down
Suggestion to put the link to the other video you’re mentioning to also watch 🙂.
I feel like side profile plays into this somehow too
I have round face and fat neck so wear my hair down to hide it and I'm quite broad
My face looks round from front and oval from side. What is my face shape?
What if you have broad shoulders but your face looks better with it up cause of high cheek bones and eyes
So, what about for long face? That wasn’t mentioned in the video.
Hairstyle for someone 6ft1 with square shape face?
Love these tips, Chi.🤍
So I should have my hair up for my face shape but down for my broad shoulder. I guess I can’t win 😢😅
I hear what you're saying, but in this video I think you looked maybe more beautiful with your hair up. Though you're beautiful both ways.
When I feel like, it's better up. When I feel like, it's better down.
petite - hair up
round face - hair down
Im 5 feet and have round face.
what should I do???
Hello, Jackie! A few loose tendrils keep things casual and conveniently out of the face. And when it comes to flattering looks for round faces a good choice of style would be half-up, half-down; it allows for a little height, and the loose hair can be tonged to soften the look. ☺️
Hair down is VERTICAL FYI. HORIZONTAL means across like the HORIZon. That’s how my math teacher in grade school told me how to remember it.
I’m not sure about my face shape and body type. I think I’m in between so I’m confused. Thanks for posting
Do you prefer your hair up or down?
I usually wear it down since I’m growing out a short cut. I’ve watched videos about flattering haircuts for age and face shape. I think I’m on the right track
Do you dye your hair dark or is this your natural colour
I look better with my hair down, but I don't like having hair near my face, is uncomfortable. As soon as I arrive home, I always make a bun and wear my bangs up too, the same when I just get up. But when I go out I normally use my hair down.
Hello, Marisa! You can use hair pins if you don't like having your hair near your face ☺️❤️
Helpful video, thank you
No worries! ❤️
I think I have a pear shaped face because my forehead is narrow... but i may have a round face because when I gain weight my face gets fuller.
thanks so much
Idk why but my face looks so skinny with my hair down and it doesn’t look good but when they are up well Idk i don’t feel comfortable
I need good ankle jeans I’m 5”2 I love high waisted skinny jeans
How tall are you
I have a long neck and long heart shaped face so screwed either way 🤣
Doesnt matter. You just need to find a good hairstyle for your type for both, hair up and hair down. Its the same thing with "people with long faces should wear long hair" 🙄
