  • Dodge Chrysler 3.5L Timing Belt and Water Pump Installation I Saved a Ton of Money!!!
    Dodge Chrysler 3.5L Timing Belt and Water Pump Installation I saved over $800 by doing the timing belt and water pump installation myself and I want to show you how you can too! I called the local Dodge Jeep Chrysler dealer to get an estimate on getting the timing belt and water pump replace, they told me I should expect to pay $1000. I purchased this Gates TCKWP295D Timing Belt Kit for my 2005 Dodge Magnum 3.5L for $167. This is an interference engine so if your timing belt is broken, this kit will not fix your car however, in the case that a belt slips or stretches, you might be ok. I considered myself lucky. The car had some unusual engine codes which point to bad timing belt symptoms: P0113, P2314, and P061C. After some investigating online I felt pretty confident that the timing had jumped and I decided to purchase this kit. After looking at other kits and reviews I found that some of them did not include the tensioner piston. This kit also had some of the higher reviews as well as number of reviews. Once installed, the car started up and ran great. Below are links to the parts that I used as well as the tools required to do this installation and a video that I thought was very helpful.

    12:30 place a couple washers on that bolt before you screw it in to turn the crank shaft. 13:40 and just cut the old belt with a pair of tin snips if you're changing out the belt and tensioner. You don't need to methodically remove the belt like you do here in the video just cut it.

    Now, I don’t want to sound like a smart ass here but never use the orange coolant in any of your engines again. This stuff corrodes your engine inside. Flush it with water as much as you can and put the hybrid green coolant in. Also, if I were you I would put some cardboard at the front side of the radiator where you work on to protect the radiator fins. Other than that your video was great and very good camera placement. • @DCAutoEnhancement
      @DCAutoEnhancement  2 роки тому

      I would definitely have that conversation with them especially if they did an "oil change". I have seen it happen where someone drains the oil, put the drain plug back in, change the filter and then take a phone call or get side tracked, go back to the car and put the oil fill cap back on thinking it's ready to go. Not saying that is what happened but it's possible

  • @tpformybunghole1974

    Saw a video where guy was fighting because it seemed ½ tooth off, fyi the water pump bolt holes are larger than the actual bolts so if the water pump is tightened with the water pump at the max edge of the bolt holes that may take up too much slack making it seem a ½ tooth off and hard to get belt on. If that happens loosen water pump bolts and move pump in whatever direction that allows you to get belt on with all markers lined up. I did my best to center the water pump so bolts were exactly in the middle of the oversized holes and I avoided the ½ tooth of scenario the guy in video had (not sure if it was this particular video, I'm just giving an fyi and didn't recently watch/rewatch this one) this was my first timing belt I ever did and I was successful so you will be too. Be sure to use torque wrench on water pump otherwise bolts might snap they're only 10 foot pounds if I remember correctly. Good luck and use oem parts they still looked good with 142k miles though there was evidence of small leak starting at weep hole of water pump so good thing I changed everything when I did. Buying online chrysler parts website saved over $100 vs going to local dealer. Another fyi is thoroughly flush your engine while doing this job, though antifreeze in reservoir looked nice and orange what was in the engine had already degraded and was cloudy and milky. Can't remember where I put garden hose I think it was upper hose in direction of engine which pushed everything out the lower hose which was disconnected from radiator. Took awhile before water coming out ran clear. Make sure to bleed system after too.

      Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate that. What I would do before inspecting the cams is take that front cover off and see what you have going on under there. If the belt is broken, you're in bad shape. If the timing is only off by a few teeth, then you should be ok. To inspect the cams, you would need to remove the intake plenum and then the valve covers, a bit of a chore in my opinion and then I'm not sure if you would be able to see much damage because the valves are what would be damaged and they are under the cams, you would actually need to remove the heads to check for damage. I could be wrong about that but I'm pretty sure that's right. Thanks again for checking out the video and good luck to you on your car!

      Usually on these cars if the belt breaks, it will destroy the engine (pistons hitting valves) however, if it just slips time like the one in the video, it should be ok. Timing is very specific, as I am learning even more on a car that I am currently doing a head gasket on! If timing is good, crank and or cam sensors can be a potential issue. I made sure to rotate the cams as little as possible. I did go forward and backward slightly because the valve springs were making them rotate past the marks. I don't know if that answers your question or not.

    • @DCAutoEnhancement
      @DCAutoEnhancement  2 роки тому

      Before taking the belt off I lined up the crank to top dead center then took the belt off and individually set each cam. I didn't want to to do any full rotations because I didn't know if that would cause any harm to the engine. So I just turned them back and forth until they lined up. Once they are on their mark they are under pressure from the valve springs, so they may want to spring forward or backward.

    • @DCAutoEnhancement
      @DCAutoEnhancement  3 роки тому

      I wish I could tell you about the conditions of the valves however, I did perform this job and the car ran as it should when I was done. I think the failure comes from belt stretch and tensioner failure.

    • @mtraven23
      @mtraven23 3 роки тому +1

      @@DCAutoEnhancement I am glad its still running for you, and you would know if the valves were bent, probably wouldn't run at all. If it did, you'd get really bad gas mileage & probably a bunch of misfire / o2 codes.
      I am not convinced stretch would account for that initial timing, unless you are saying it stretched enough to hop a tooth? The whole point of a cogged timing belt is to act like a chain or gears. stretch those cogs out and you still have the same # of cogs & the gear ratio between the crank : cams is preserved.
      that's why I worry the crank and/or cam shafts slipped with respect to their gears. I say this with some experience, I once had a crank gear slip...bashed all my freshly ground valves into my brand new pistons..that was a bad day. but your engine is running & its hard to argue with that!
      and I should say thank you, I have done a few timing belts / chains in my day, but never on this vehicle, which I am doing for a friend. Found this quite helpful.
      Although I am stuck trying to get that damn pulley off, maybe it'll pop off while I am sleeping.

    • @DCAutoEnhancement
      @DCAutoEnhancement  Рік тому +1

      Because the belt wasn't broken, I rotated the crank until it was at top dead center or at the mark on the block then I adjusted the cam gears. I assumed that moving them slightly back and forth would be better than full rotations because in my mind, that would allow the valves to potentially open and hit any pistons that may be testing at the top of the cylinder.
