@SuSunnyGM Wrong. It's a sign of appreciation. It is also a way of showing a compliment to the chef. Here’s a summary to clear any misconceptions In Japan: 1. Will you be judged for slurping noodles? No 2. Is it a part of culture? Not really 3. If you don’t slurp would people get angry at you? No 4. Why do people slurp noodles? Because it creates more air flow to your mouth which in turn gives the illusion that the noodles have more flavour, and i think its just quicker to eat noodles like that Thanks for reading ❤ Edit: I believe slurping noodles as a way to show compliments to the chef is a myth, i think it simply stems from the fact that slurping noodles in Japan is okay and tolerated so many foreigners also slurp thinking it’s something Japanese people do be polite (keep in mind Japanese people are VERY polite, in Japanese they have an informal and formal way of speaking and the culture of being polite is INGRAINED into the culture)
You'll be judged for anything in white people's world or whatever the race is called, Not racist, Not ragebaiting, It is true, They even think tofu is gross

Actually they give zero fuks if u slurp or not. The reason for it is that japanese like to eat their noodles fast and quick which naturally makes them make the slurping sound. And also if the broth is too hot (eating ramen) the slurping cools it down faster 😊
The western must start to realize that there are thousands of countries and maybe millions of cultures. Appreciate all of them, not to judge by the "Civilized" Western POV.
Nah some cultural characteristics suck. Trust me I have lived in Japan for many years and it is gross trying to eat while people slurp so loudly around you. It is very reasonable to find it a problem.
Oh but you’ll go after Americans for being loud and obnoxious in public. Enough with the double standards. You’re just finding another excuse to rip on America
Thats a misconception, its not part of our culture, more of a choice. You can choose to slurp, the chef wont even know anyway because hes in the kitchen cooking food.
@@yamato5014 I think in some japanese restaurants, some kitchens are displayed in front of guest so they can interact with guest or if guest needed something.

The question should be why are those American foreigners in a Japanese restaurant complaining about the cultural norms IN ANOTHER PERSON'S COUNTRY. (Also slurping in Japanese culture is complimenting the chef that they are enjoying the meal). As usual Americans going abroad and expecting others to conform to them instead of THEY THEMSELVES ADAPTING TO THAT COUNTRY'S CULTURAL NORMS AND STANDARDS.
Two things: 1, slurping implies deliciousness, so if anything NOT slurping is offensive to the chef. 2, slurping cools it down so you don’t burn your tongue/mouth.
The second one is correct but not applied in this situation. I'm pretty sure that's somen noodles. These noodles and boiled then chilled, so he doesn't need to cool them down. Sorry if i sound like I want to offend you. Just trying to give my perspective.😁😁
The first point is incorrect. The chef won't care if you slurp or not, that means nothing to him/her. It's just how you're supposed to eat the noodles so you get the broth with it.
@@spiwolf6998 i think traditionally slurping can imply that the noodles were delicious, but i see where your coming from. Sorry if i sound incomprehensible.😬

This is misconception I've only ever heard from non-Japanese people. I've been to Japan several times and have eaten at multiple ramen shops, never have I ever heard people slurping on noodles this loudly. If people slurp it's to cool down noodles and to get as much of broth flavor, not as a compliment to the chef. Everyone would be ok with it? What’s your point? Different cultures criticize each other all the time. It’s a positive thing. That’s how we learn from each other. I think slurping noodles is incredibly obnoxious. Japan is a country that is known for being very polite and respectful and not bothering each other, but for some reason that doesn’t apply to food. You don’t have to like every aspect of every culture. Some parts of some cultures are dumb
@@Im-Skullex-fr I think you just MISSED the point. What you said doesn't contradict what I said at all. I think it doesn't make sense that slurping is respectful. Who are you showing that you are enjoying it? The chef in the back who doesn't see you? And even if they did see you, that's a single person. You're surrounded in public by other people who didn't cook the food who get to hear your obnoxious slurping noises too. What if you cooked the food yourself? Would you be showing respect to yourself, while you're still bothering everyone else? And how does being noisy show that you enjoy it in the first place? Maybe they don't taste good but you were just hungry. You see the point? It just makes no sense. There are many things about many cultures that don't make sense. You are allowed to criticize whatever you want. Humans don't make sense and therefore neither does human culture. Automatically accepting everything at face value is a weak thing to do. I’m American and I don’t respect it or the culture behind slurping noodles because I think it is dumb. Nobody has to automatically bow down to any aspects of the culture of another. In many ways, one culture can be better than another. You’re allowed to have an opinion on someone else’s culture. The way one group of people does things may be better than another. You can like or not like bits and leaves of it. For example, it is considered rude to have loud conversations on public transportation in Japan, but not in America. I prefer the Japanese culture on this, because I think being noisy in public is always rude. I apply the same reasoning to slurping noodles, so I would agree with the American culture perspective and not the Japanese culture. Nobody has to accept one thing or another.
If I was in a Japanese noodle shop in Sweden, I'd still slurp the noodles if it were delicious. It's the food culture not the location. Ofc I'd look like an oddball slurping Japanese noodles in a Japanese restaurant in Sweden, but I'd still do it as a sign of respect to the owner.

I've lived in Japan for 3 years. Normally noodles are cooked with the broth so we can silently suck it in. In Japan, it’s a compliment to slurp noodles loudly. It means that the food is good/ amazing and they purposefully do it to let the chefs hear it’s an appreciation to the chef.

Also its not 1 culture in America with 1 tradition America is of mixed or races, ethnicities & cultures. So exactly what culture do you get called racist for practicing it.
It's a Standard U S thing

I've lived in Japan for 3 years.
Normally noodles are cooked with the broth so we can silently suck it in. But in Japan, they dip noodles in broth while eating, so the broth is mainly covering the noodles from outside. This means if they try to suck it in, the broth will remain outside on their mouth and the noodle will taste bland
Are you inferring the way this man was eating is bad because he isn't chewing the noodles?
@@wildmoose3979 no. Japanese broth is oily and thick, that’s why they dip the noodles in instead of cooking them in it. And it means since it hasn’t had the time to simmer in to the noodles, if you silently suck it in, all the broth with get stuck on your lips and drip out like a filter.
Going to a different culture restaurant then complaining about it is wild💀
Yeah idk how tf people are getting mad about this, I'm impressed honestly
Slurping is a sign of respect and thx for the food let that man eat and be thankfull
In Japan, it’s a compliment to slurp noodles loudly. It means that the food is good/ amazing and they purposefully do it to let the chefs hear it’s an appreciation to the chef.
It's not an intentional thing that japanese people do actually, many Japanese people when asked literally don't have an answer to why they do. There are a lot of videos that debunk that myth.
Myth
In japan, if you slurp then it means that you are enjoying the food which makes the chef happy
The Japs over here at TME do it too.
It's the way they eat, it bothers nobody.
We bekgians eat tasty fries with mayo with our hands 😊. With greasy fingers 😂.
Grtz.
in America, you blow your Nose as hard as you can in public to assert Domination
In America, if you take your shirt off and whip the cashier you get a free meal
In canada whoever burps the loudest is the most appreciative of the chef. It's very respectful
@@randompersonintheworld232 - Vous êtes sûre et certaine de ça ? 😂
In Japan, if you slurp loud that means you love the food. So not slurping can be rude in japan
Not necessarily, some folks say their parents condone it. It's just ones preference on how they eat, because those are some practices that give freedom on how they live.
Slurping is just accepted. That's it. Doesn't mean anything.
