Absolutely chilling delivery, really conveys the strength, experience and power of an ancient soldier. The voice actor for Friday deserves massive praise, some of the best monster voice acting I’ve heard in a long time.
“They could slaughter whole civilisations but weep at the crushing of a flower.” Love that line!

An equally sad and beautiful truth, for the greatest Warriors/Soldiers. They value and respect life and can weep at it's loss. Yet have the ability and knowledge to take it away too.

I liked this episode, it felt like a classic for the most part while delivering a groundbreaking premise with a twist I never saw coming. Mark Gatiss's portrayal of the Ice Warriors was definitely one of his strongest points.
Has anyone noticed that the portrait of Queen Victoria is Pauline Collins' Victoria from Tooth and Claw.

Yes. It turns out that George Lucas himself is a Whovian. It was in the early 80s when I first developed a soft spot for Doctor Who.
The definite first step was when I saw the movie with Peter Cushing in the role taking on none other than the Daleks.
Such an underrated gem of an episode!
I really enjoyed the quirkiness of what Mark Gatiss wrote, having Victorians on Mars! The red coats on the red planet, having a good old cup of tea.

CJ Bottomley that’s a shame, I enjoyed his stories, especially the ones with the Ice Warriors. Hopefully he works with Big Finish at some point.
He wrote several Big Finish stories and novels.
From the soundtrack to the monsters, this was a beautifully done classic throwback.

This is 1 of my favourite episodes of the new who era and possibly ever. It was a perfect DW story in my opinion. Pete deservedly got a few great stories in his final year

Don't see why anyone has issues with this episode. It's not the best of Series 10, and it's not the worst. I doesn't add anything to the overall arc, but it doesn't matter if it does. It's just your typical, plain-old run of the mill episode of Doctor Who, and that's all it needs to be.
I thought it was one of the best.

What is the Story about?

I want a season of Doctor Who where the main villains are the Ice Warriors instead of the Daleks or Cybermen for once. You could have a time war 2 with the Timelords vs the Ice Warriors set in the far future. The doctor arrives and sees battle Tardises and Ice warrior spaceships in battle, then lands on Mars to see do what he can stop an oncoming war.
One problem is that they overuse those 2 races non stop and downplay their power
Ice Warriors are my favourite Dr Who aliens. This scene sums up why for me.

Specially relating to the Empress of Mars episode, this might make you smile. Which Joseph Campbell only ever said would be the case to be fair. Worth a click.

I must be one of the only people who really liked this episode. Personally I find this era of the british history to be fascinating. I understand the terrible atrocities and etc commited by the empire. But the way they sought to expand and expand and discover more and more was somethign that I find very empowering

It's questions like that which have me saying

I lost count how many times the lady of the house called out my name, I responded and she asked "Are you awake?"
Ok. Now thinking about it, it makes sense that the Queen is a Whovian because Doctor Who is a British show.

+William Norton Yeah, I found out years ago that Lucas is a Whovian too. And I think so is Steven Spielberg as he once said the world would be a poorer place without Doctor Who.
The only thing I didn't like about this episode was the silly parcel effect the Ice Warriors' weapons had (guys, just show a body; it won't scar anyone for life).
The Ice Warriors are my favorite alien species in Doctor Who, and this scene partially illustrates why. As this Ice Warrior is explaining that he is old, tired, and spent, a fragile glass plate falls behind him. Without seeing it AT ALL, he spins around in a literal instant, catches it after it barely falls, and doesn't break it even though he is basically, including his armor, a living behemoth. It's insane how much depth the creators of this show can give to an alien race while only having shown them a few times at most (not including the classic series).

Alpha Centauri saves this episode completely. Question: why did they change the Ice Warriors' voices? They were much better as hissing creatures than the generic deep voice I felt.
Other than AC's cameo, I didn't like this story that much. It felt like every Mark Gatiss cliché we're already used to, but this time packaged up with an 'Ice Warriors on Mars' label. Good job I like Ice Warriors

I actually liked this episode. Until the ice warriours attack and the people get crumpled up into a ball.
The subtitles on this are atrocious, when the doctor said ice queen, they said ice cream. Along with a lot of other misspellings and Miss quotes

I feel like this story could have been better without the Victorian soldiers in it - I would have liked for the Ice Warriors to have more of the focus from this episode rather than them.

The first episode with the Ice Warriors of Mars came out in 1967, predating the Ice Pirates which came out in 1984.
Doctor Who wins this round of who did it first by a decent margin.

I hate it when an episode has nothing to drive the plot forward other than every character but the Doctor and sometimes their companion being stupid. Seriousely, if there was ever an episode of Doctor Who that fits the bill for an "Idiot Plot", it's this one.

great stuff. shame about Gatiss being all butthurt about a black actor being casted in it. Didn't think he was that petty.
They had to do a lot of historical digging to find even a vague justification for a black guy being there, so give him a break for not wanting to break history for PC's sake.
so so petty (and really, closet racist) to be so so concerned about something like that in a science fiction show with talking pepper shakers and shapeshifting aliens. Only one motivation behind something like that and it should never be ok to give it a pass. Brown people are everywhere in history, like it or not.
Its Doctor Who. Not a documentary. And if he cares so much about skin color in regards to science fiction storytelling HE should have done a lot of historical digging to find even a vague justification (ie possibility) for a 'black guy' being cast lol. The trigger was the black guy being cast. Had he said nothing, I would have thought nothing of it.

Where the hell have all the fans of this episode been lol, probably second worst of the series
While I'm not trying to sort out episodes, I really didn't like this episode and felt it was weak on so many places. I'm just completely blown away seeing everyone saying it's one of the best, in the comments. I don't see why, I don't see how. I can't understand, while I'm usually pretty good at analysing episodes and how people relate to them. (Well, "pretty good" sounds pretentious, but for the lack of a better word in my vocabulary (I'm french), it's the ones I'll use.)
Not really. Compared to Gatiss' last outing with the Ice Warriors (Cold War) this is leaps and bounds better. The Pilot, Thin Ice, Knock Knock, The Lie of the Land, and The Eaters of Light are all worse than this.

The thing is : the fact that something is better than something else doesn't make it good. As I said, I don't try to sort episode from the weakest to the strongest. Sure, Cold War wasn't the best episode, but it doesn't make Empress of Mars something to be crazy about. For me, many episodes that season had at least one or two good moments that made them worth watching (a speech, an idea, the filming, etc...) but this one, I can't see anything to keep. I like how they tried to create a classic "50's Mummy horror movie" vibes but with alien, but while the concept was great, I just didn't felt it was interesting or executed greatly.
For comparison : Knock Knock and The Lie of the Land are two episode with the same problem : I felt their conclusion were really weak and underwhelming (especially Lie of the Land, I'll have nightmare of that scene with Bill's mother, dragging for way too long with her hand in front of her, and the lights in her back shaped like wings... come on). But those episode had great moments. For Knock Knock, how the Doctor is facing the Landlord and Bill try to make everyone think he is her grandpa. For The Lie of the Land : Bill vs The Doctor and the reunion with Missy.
In my opinion this is not that bad as a episode
