As many of you know I’ve recently started Patreon, a subscription-based service that helps out the channel and in return gets you early, commercial-free access to weekly episodes, behind the scenes and full access to the #IronDuke Kenworth cabover build: / twinstickgarage
Special thanks to the almost 700 folks who have signed up so far!
As I’ve mentioned, I do plan provide the occasional Iron Duke update episode on UA-cam for everyone to enjoy and this is one of those weeks …
This Saturday was spent reinstalling the rebuilt differentials for the Iron Duke that the Gear Center recently put together. Once I got started, I also realized this was a great opportunity to try out the new Tiger Tool pullers to tackle the old crusty slack adjusters and let me tell you, that is my new favorite tool in the box. The diffs went in without issue and now I need to get a custom driveshaft built by Pat’s Driveline … onward and upward!
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!
Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts
Subscribe for notifications for future episodes that I do my best to upload new videos weekly on Thursdays.

Great episode Mark! We're glad to help you with the differential rebuilds and looking forward to your driveline project. Iron Duke is coming together nicely so far!
Thanks again and can’t wait to get the new driveshaft built 👍
what kind of wheels are you going to put on the Iron Duke?
@@Vigilance108these ones: ua-cam.com/video/H2lGVaMcRws/v-deo.htmlsi=PjcVh1bYKr7McRZK
those will look nice on it
My late father had a '70 White Freightliner COE that I traveled across the country many times with him and sometimes entire family. We later on restored it after it sat for yrs when he started his own trucking company when was in high school. Unfortunately both my father and that truck are long gone now but miss them both.
Love the fact you have such a great channel, vendors are sending you new tools to use. A win-win. Thanks Tiger Tools!
That gear center guy is a pro! No waisted movement…
I remember when I lost my short shaft in the US and the first place I stopped at looking for repairs told me they had to order it in. I asked where they would be ordering it from and they said "The Gear Center in Edmonton, Canada". I just locked up the front diff and drove back home to Edmonton. Once home I stopped in at The Gear Centre and got myself a new shaft and installed it.
I've worked on 12 and 10 bolt GM, 9" Ford, Dana 44, and 60, but this stuff is massive! You can tell the guy in the video is good at what he does, because he has all his fingers. Nice work.
I remember when did Little By little rear diff out in the cold snow and ice.
Please please Mark get all the suspension done before you get drive shafts made!!!! The angle of everything is really important, you'll never keep U-joints on the truck if it's not right!!!! Besides that, another awesome episode, keep it up!!!!!!!!
Don't know if Tiger Tool reads your comments or not but I have always been impressed with their specialty tools and I will be ordering that set myself very soon. Thanks for the real world demo
We sure do! We appreciate your support and look forward to your order!
Great Job, I think you should have done 3.36’s especially on a Non Working Truck.
This is how power divider works. Power came in the drive shaft, thru a set of spider gears which split the power equally to the front pinion gear and output shaft to the rear end. If you think the rear is the only one powered, remove one of the front axles to see if truck moves. If you think the front is only one powered, remove one of the rears. If I need to explain how a tri-drive works. I will be glad to.
Hi Mark, I love your channel. I found your channel way back in in 2020....? I found you when i started my "Covid-19" project.. a 1977 Ford C8000 cab over single axle tractor.
I want to clarify your interpretation of how inter-axle tandem drives work. With inter-axle differential active the power is fed equally to both axles front and rear simultaneously. if slippage is encountered at the front axle left or right wheels, the rear axle stops pulling. If the slippage happens at the rear axle left or right wheels, the front axle stops pulling. this is how tandem drives operate normally. when inter-axle differential is engaged, it locks the centre differential and only allows slippage between wheel set to wheel set (either front axle or rear axle). What I'm trying to point out here is the inter-axle lock doesn't engage one axle or the other specifically, it stops slippage between the front and rear axles and still allows left to right slippage of wheel sets. tough to explain in words...
My Pops' 81 Pete had the inter-axle diff lock AND locking diffs! I did get to use all that a few times over the years here in BC, with it all fully locked it ONLY goes straight with the throttle on!
Yea absolutely. When you lock them both in, it will push the steer tires sideways in some cases. 😂
The solenoid engages the planetary gears? Hilarious
Yeah I misspoke … they aren’t planetary gears … the solenoid engages the secondary gear set
The back diff is powered all the time. The front diff is the one that you can lock in.
the axle that has the least traction is the one thats powered
You're a gd genius Gump
@@ryandwyer4890which is usually the rear differential.
The front axle wont pull untill its lock in. Power goes straight through it till its locked. Pull the driveshaft out between the rearends. You wont move at all untill you lock the power divider.
That actually depends on the make of power divider.
Some euro trucks drive front axle. Australian trucks drive both axles all the time in an open diff style. The right on the front axle and left in the rear will always wear tyres faster and you need to rotate tyres at 50 000km. Most Aussie trucks also have quad locks.
Jump in an Iveco Stralis though and the back axle will roll off a gutter but the middle axle will hang up.
Hey Mark, Aussie fan here! Another great video! Do yourself a favour and keep a glass cold in the fridge for your beer and throw those plastic cups in the bin where they belong!
Mark it's the rear drive that has the power not the front. I know because I broke the though shaft on my truck. But looking good
The Duke is about the length of one of our rigid units, which I used to work on a bunch back in the day. So I can confirm, your idea for the driveshaft, with the slip shaft at the rear and a straight up front, is the way to go. Just put a little drop in there to make the angle a little easier. That gear centre was awesome to watch, they do some very good work! Good to see the Duke coming along.
While you were applying the gasket dope, with the pumpkin hanging above your head..... that would have made a good meme for sure... LOL
Wasn’t above my head but rather off to the side past the rail … just an optical illusion - note the location of the chain 👀
Great episode. Kudos to Tiger Tool and the Gear Center group, too! 👏 👍
Dukes looking great 👍 Mark
Awesome episode Mark! I work for a company in New Jersey called Hydro Mechanical and the Gear Center is one of our customers we send parts to them when they need them and I am actually one of the guys who picks packs and ships there orders so when I heard who was redoing your diffs I thought how awesome is that. I’ve been watching you since the outside days before you had the shop and I love how far you have come you definitely deserve it you are a hard worker and are very knowledgeable I can’t wait to see more.
The patients this guy has is inspiring 🙌
Hay buddy good luck
Marc, you mentioned the power divider axel does the work when not on? I think it is the other way around. Rear axel is live all the time and the front rear only live when power divider is on. At least with all my trucks that is the case. I had my diffs all rebuilt too but I had them put in Detroit no spin lockers on front and rear and they are the bomb. No problem turning corners on dry pavement either. Never getting stuck on gravel or mud now with just running bob tail. All eight tires now spin together when power divider is on. Dallas
This is correct sir. Path of least resistance USUALLY powers the right side of the rear drive axle. Engaging the PDL makes the front differential join the party.
Love all your videos mark love from Jamaica 🇯🇲
I am liking the video before even watching it
15:57 a neat little trick mark if you see this comment, I work in the states as a transport truck mechanic, when I do the rears, I also use guide studs like you did but I cut a slot in the middle of them so you can unscrew them with a flathead as they sometimes get stuck. Keep up the good work and can’t wait to see your projects hit the finish line!
Boy having the tools for the job making all the difference. Keep jamming brother love to see this happen to the ol girl!
Another day in paradise with TwinSticks new video 😊
doing diffs, in my shaker this weekend
I remember my first job as a truck mech at a wrecker yard was taking out 40+ diffs. In the Phoenix heat. Lots of bent axles. Good experience. And now my back only hurts on days that end in “y”.
DD speed shop in Manitoba has a buddy named Dallas too .
Same guy 😂 ua-cam.com/video/gnpWB8YQICY/v-deo.htmlsi=lFMsrUqQMvwFOpl0
Simply beautiful job👍🇨🇦
Impressive work Mark...so good how they put the third member together...cheers down under and down Richie
Your rear axle is your main drive axle when you lock your power divider in it, ingages the front axle
that was nice to see
all you did an telling people .
enjoy them brews
👍👍👍👍
Great to see the Duke on UA-cam Marc, we appreciate it mate.
Love your content Mark, good stuff! Been a mechanic for a long time and am building an A model also. Built a few trucks over the years. I don’t want to dwell on a mistake but the rear axle always has power. Usually the right rear, tires wear faster on that corner most of the time. Locking the power divider gives you power to the for the axle. I also want to possibly give you and idea so you can keep that exhaust as tall as possible, because after all it’s one of a kind and possibly the focal point of this custom, eye catching build. Maybe look into air ride front spring kit so you can lower it as much as possible and still get in and out of the shop. Love seeing your weekly vids!
I appreciate the updates on the Iron Duke. Thank you
can't wait to see the Iron Duke finished and painted
Most Excellent video Dude!
The field trip to The Gear Center was fun!
Its a lot of fun seeing you enjoy what you love to do. Thanks for the uploads.
Really enjoyed the whole episode
it's great to see this project Mark !!!...
Power divider is a differential between the 2 rears. It allows them to move independently. As long as all 4 corners are making traction, both rears drive the truck. If a wheel slips on either rear end, the power divider locks the them together. If you get 2 wheels slipping, you're out of luck.
Then why would a truck get stuck with power divider locked in ? Kicks the rock out from under the wheels and doesn’t move 2 inches ? Every thing locked in ! Nothing broken !
@@davidcatlette9697
Because it doesn't lock the front and rear diffs from side to side. The powerdivider is an interaxle lock, not an axle lock. All twin screw trucks have a power divider. Not all twin screw trucks have lockers.
nice one mark, that [puller most excellent, enjoyed the vid.
thanks dont work to hard just before xmas mt.
Love the channel and journeying with you
Iron Duke is coming along nicely.
Mark good work loving the videos 👍✌️
Love the build! Me personally would put a big ass camper on the Cab-over. A hitch on the back and drag a low bed with the other two to the truckshows😂
Mornin Mark, Awesome episode really good to see an episode of the Iron duke, that truck as you said has a long way to go but it is really looking good already. Have a great week my friend say hello to Mrs. Twin stix for us.
Nice work on the duke an the rest of dem old trucks good sir
Great explanation of how the diffs work 👍
He had it backwards though. Power flows through the front diff to the rear. The front diff only helps when the power divider is locked in.
Just a quick tip for cleaning out those diffs, if you spray everything out and want to use a pressure washer for getting the hard stuff out but dont want water in there, dry it out with a towel and use methanol to get rid of all the little drops of water. Works like a charm, we used it in my engineering chem labs to clean test tubes out.
Good work, Mark. I drove a few of those old Kenworths, including the Cabover.
Wow what a great episode so glad you encluded us youtubers on an big update on the Iron Duke always look forward to weekly twinsticks tv time
Morning Twinsticks garage family 🤎🇨🇦✝️🇺🇲❤️...neato...I have seen very few episodes with the iron duke...I enjoyed it none to less ..you do one hell of a that's for sure ...
Great video! The truck is coming along nicely!
I couldn't tell because of the time lapse, but a good idea when installing pinion yokes is to add a dab of silicone on the splines inside the yoke, as well as on the washer and nut face. That helps to prevent potential weeping of oil up the splines and around the nut. I'm sure you knew all that already.
Mark, thanks for the great video. I don’t have a vintage truck however I find the material relevant. Look forward to the finish project! Thanks.
Wicked tool set! Neat how they put the diffs together! Seems the job gets easier every time you have to do them Eh! Well done!
Hi Mark. Hey today I seen on face book. A Smokey and Bandit trans am. Replica or tribute. They are asking 23000. Or20000. Pics look nice . I am in Ohio. Keep up the great work
he's go one in the works.
A very good video 📹 👏 👌 🎉
Thanks for all the cool videos Mark. I just re did the rear ends on my 74 W900A that I truck every day. I like to use solvent when I clean out the diffs, expensive purchase but I think it’s cheaper than brake cleaner on a rear end job.
Well Thanks for the video, looks like your Almost Done with Duke😁 Hey A Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to You and your family!😊...........................see ya
Appreciate it but there’s a ton of work that still needs doin’ 😂
Take your measurements from the tranny yoke to the front diff & each cross-members to the drive line guys. They can do all the figures for the right one for you. Nice job on the install. Rear diff always drives & power divider kicks in the front diff.
Congrats Mark, on getting the Diffs put-in with ur lift without getting hurt. alot more stuff to put-on down the road..
That Gratz gantry is perfect for this kind of work👌
A great video again ! You make the impossible come to life . Put one of your trucks to 2 work . Twin Sticks goes to work.
Love the episode Mark, isn’t great to get a new tool and it works so good eh? Keep up the good work can’t wait to see it done.
Have you ever thought about doing a Mack like in the movie Convoy? The Rubber Duck?
Awesome channel, my girlfriend Jackie and I always look forward to watching it every time you post ,we're here in Winnipeg, I have a 1934 International 2 ton I'm trying to resurrect, I have a question about that Vevor buffer polisher is that the model W 1200 I want to try it on my fenders before I attempt to fix all the damage from so many years of hauling grain out on my uncle's farm
Greg
Great Job Mark The Duke is looking great far cry from mouse house
Watching from Webster NEW HAMPSHIRE
I'm a semi mechanic. The diffs aren't that easy when the cross members are in the way.
Agreed 👍
Grt8 job Mark..... Like you say back in the truckers would get killed under there trailer messing with brake pod springs
I like how the park brake spring has a sealed ring now 👍
Hello Mark - pass along to Tiger Tools that I'll definitely be checking them out - seems like quality well designed gear that saved you time & effort. I don't wrench on anything bigger than my '01 TJ right at the moment but who knows? Wouldn't have known about them were it not for your channel, bud!
I think folks in patreon are getting a better deal (more interesting, content)
ITS JUST A BIG MECANO SET
but dang it its sore when you drop summit on your toes or hands LOL
G'day Mark ,
Nice job ,and the TigerTools sure helped.
I was a little concerned when I saw all the sparks from cut off wheels & bolt heads flying ,,hope you cleaned up after all the bits of carborundum & metal .
Still , another cool vid ,really enjoying this job .Can't wait to see how it turns out .
Respect...!
I blew it out with air one final time before installing 👍
Sure come a long way from working in muddy puddles Mark! Great work and vid as always!
🍻🇬🇧🏴
Been following since the beginning.l restored a77 kenworth. Wouldn’t mind chatting with you.
Hell ya.
Mark, after watching this video I had a flashback from Ghostbusters. "EVERYBODY CAN RELAX, I FOUND THE CAR. NEEDS SOME SUSPENSION WORK AND SHOCKS. BRAKES, BRAKE PADS, LINING, STEERING BOX, TRANSMISSION, REAR-END."
😂
I guess I'm one of the purists. I can say from experience your not gonna wreck the threads but you can make your day longer by breaking a tap in the hole by using a drill instead of doing it by hand. If it catches a bit when your doing it by hand you can feel that and stop with the drill youll only notice when the tap breaks.
Keep up the great work. After all these years of watching, you inspired me. I just finished up and received my Class A CDL down here in the states.
Congrats 👏
Don’t cheap out on the Cosby sauce!!!!
It is another Thursday!
Permatex makes a green gasket maker that is compatible with differential gear lube.
I Knew that you were going to do it but it was about 3rd time like rice n repeat 😂
I,see on the end, it,s easy to vind a trailer behind THE DUKE ,just a old FRUEHAUF, is what you need.
The right tools sure help make it easier 🔧🔧🙌🏼👊🏼👍🏻 and your garage is starting to look like mine 😂😂😂 you remember there is a huge empty trailer sitting right outside the garage 😂😂 some of your stuff you ain’t going to touch right away can go in the trailer to get out of your way 👍🏻👊🏼🙌🏼 ask me how I ended up with 6 semi trailers for storage 😂😂😂😂
Thought about it but then decided I didn’t want to store a bunch of stuff in there as it would all roll around when I start driving it again in again the spring 🤔
@@TwinStix your thinking about that wrong, you are supposed to have used it by spring 🤣🤣🤣 yeah right I know 🤣🤣👍🏻👊🏼🙌🏼🔧🔧🔧🔧
Just for fun, you need to bolt down a brake chamber and use put all your really long extensions together and undo the bolt.
I used to do it as a party trick. Some as setting off airbags. It's actually kind of disappointing.
You might take your drivelines in and get them all balanced
My name is mark I enjoy the videos.what if you could put hinges so the stacks fold?
Hey Mark are you going to put Dukes name on the doors and the Iron Duke logos on the sides and front? If not it won't look like his truck too much at all but it will be a sweet looking truck
Probably
My 2 cents👍🏽
another great video! im always looking forward to them! Also Milwaukee and Coors need to send you some goody bags for as much free advertising the get !!
40 Cases of Coors 😁
Ya idk about that..
Mark look at your other trucks.the back rearend should have the pinion on the bottom not the top. I did the same on my kenworth not paying attention.you will see a little slope on the case that’s the oil drain back passage.
Odd as that’s how it was when I took it apart 🤔 ua-cam.com/video/MQ4Cdog5z1E/v-deo.htmlsi=dq53CZaTZbYiN1QO
Greetings from New Brunswick ! Big fan of the channel, been following since the beginning. What about doing a solid mount deal for the 5th wheel on the Duke ? Super clean look vs them friggen ugly slider plates.
That's an interesting idea but I think I may keep the slider as I'll need to roll it all the way back to pull my camper then push fwd if I pulled the Snowman trailer
@TwinStix ok gotcha I never thought about that. Enjoy the vidoes and your passion on the all builds. Super keen to see the Pete all finished. I'm 2nd generation trk driver and the Smokey and the Bandit movie no doubt was the reason I followed in dads footsteps lol. Hope you and your family have a merry Xmas 🍻
See what Pat's say but you might be better off to do an even split depending on where you're steady bearing can be mounted
