Anxiety can significantly lessen to the point where it doesn't affect day-to-day basis.
I remember when I was young, I was afraid of going outside because I thought I was gonna get shot or something similar. However now after several years has passed, I feel confident of going outside and not let my anxiety get away from hanging out with my friends. :)

I have social anxiety and panic attacks and while I was in gym I was freaking out about running the mile because what if I wasn't fast, what if I fall, there were so many possibilities and I told my gym teacher I wasn't feeling good. He told me to take his class seriously and if I wasn't physically hurt I was going to run. All of my classmates called me childish and a wimp. Just because you can't see the illness it doesn't mean that it's not there

    • @navinut
      @navinut 8 років тому +15

Same.... I did that too - told my gym teacher I wasn't feeling well. She said that I needed to do it that day... That was the day I felt TOO pressured and I ended up throwing up before we started to run...

I had a debate in front of the whole class. While the other side was saying their opening statement, it got harder and harder for me to breath. Once it was my turn to talk, it turned into a full-blown panic attack in front of the entire class. The only thing you could hear was my rapid breathing and the awful choking noises I was making. It was terrifying.

    • @lanfriesen
      @lanfriesen 8 років тому +2

I have so much anxiety about PE, too. I have panic attacks. I eventually got into an easier class (long story), but I don't really want to tell anyone why because I feel like they'll think I just got some free pass. On the other hand, if I had a broken leg, people would probably be so understanding.

Well, it is a phase. Several year ago, half of my class say they have depression and cut themselves daily, but nearly all of them grew out of it. Mental illnesses like autism and Down syndrome are not phases, but depression and anxiety are.

+IT'S JUST A PRANK, BRO! CHILL! CHILL!!! Actually, depression, anxiety, bipolar, and the like can all be chronic life-long struggles. Some people suffer from situational depression and that may pass in time. Most people struggle with these illnesses their entire life. I was diagnosed with severe depression (now diagnosed as bipolar) and severe anxiety (generalized anxiety disorder) in 1995 when I was 12 and have been battling them every day since then. Please be aware that when you say to people with mental illness that it is "just a phase" that it is extremely hurtful and invalidating.

+IT'S JUST A PRANK, BRO! CHILL! CHILL!!! I have struggled with a few mental illnesses for my ENTIRE LIFE. I sort of understand what you mean, how sometimes you can overcome them with meds and therapy. But for people like me who cannot get help, these illnesses drag on and on.

I had a friend who had actually said that they though my asthma was all in my head (even leaving traps for me to fall into like spraying dangerous aerosol without my knowing and seeing if I'd react) - when I later got depressed and anxious for a very long time, I didn't tell them cause I didn't know how they act - when I did tell them, they just freaked out, making me feel worse, and then, less than a week later, kept complaining about how I had stressed them out in telling them all this and how it had messed with THEIR life and made it all the worse
I feel we don't teach people how to be people well enough, especially not to understand and support those with mental (or physical) illnesses

is everyone just ignoring the fact that they're taking a serious mental illness and putting it next to a cold or flu rather than a serious disease which can have the same affects if not worse to someone's health as its mental and physical.

I had all the signs of depression and anxiety but my best advice is to don't let them define you i.e. don't think you have any mental illnesses...think of them as your personality but a part of you that you want to change like if you were judgy or if you were rude. Secondly do things out of your comfort zone which are spontaneous so you don't worry and lastly COLD SHOWERS! I read up on this and it was a miracle when I tried it...in a month my depression had faded considerably and my anxiety lowered because it builds confidence in yourself (because of the mental strength you need). This also may sound vile but just pull yourself together and don't self pity. Good Luck!

What depression is like for sufferers: Constant, agonising feelings of nothingness, a complete sap of motivation to get anything done as well as physical energy, longing for those short times where you can actually feel something other than what you are currently, feeling like everything is completely pointless and worthless, literally severely harming yourself just to possibly feel something different, self loathing beyond what any rational being could imagine.
What non-sufferers think depression is like: lmao I'm too lazy to do anything now I'm gunna cut myself for attention lolololololol.

If you are still a student or you still dont have a job abd your family doesnt believe you, try telling you friends and ask them for advice. There are those few friends (in my case, two of them) who helped me scout the public hospitals for psychiatrist. Usually, mental help is not covered by perks from govt but it doesnt mean it is that impossible to seek professional help. Also, there are hope/help lines you can call varying from your country. Trevor Project if you are in the US or UK(?)

There are people out there that can help. I am a psychology major, and while it may feel that there is no one that can help, there are plenty of people that can just sit and listen. They can help you through whatever is going on, and help you find a way to get through it. While I do not suffer from any mental illnesses. What I have learned in my three years of college is that while you may feel that no one is there that can help, there are always people.

You should seek more help then. If you let a mental illness fester, it won't get any better. If you are in school, try going to the counselors office or the nurses office. If you go to the doctor for annual checkups then tell them about it. The main idea here is that you need to tell someone so that they can help you.

Depression, anxiety, possible schizophrenia, and literally no one seems to understand that I don't LIKE being the way I am with this. People act like I'm just lazy, I have to have a reason to be depressed, that I can't POSSIBLY be schizophrenic even though I show very obvious signs like hallucinations, that my anxiety is me being 'anti-social', and more BS that I won't get into. People don't understand how we function and thus try to write it off in ways THEY understand. Sad but true, and all we can do is keep reaching out for support until we find something to grab on to.

For the commenters of this video saying that happiness is a choice, it's all your head, blah blah blah. You need to wake up and realize that some people have a different experience of life than you. I suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder & OCD and let me tell you that I have tried my hardest to just change my perspective but it is too damn hard. There are just too many awful things going on for me to be positive. So please understand that some people are too busy fighting to stay breathing on this planet before you tell them that they just need to think positive.

I had a panic attack, and I knew I was about to have one, but when I asked to go to the nurse they said you'll be fine. Later, I had my panic attack, and I stopped mentally functioning. Still, I was told I couldn't leave. I had to sit for 10 minutes in complete hell, because the teachers at my school wouldn't take me seriously. My friends had to step in and tell them that this was serious. I don't understand why having a cold is more serious than someone literally being unable to function.

    • @caketheory

Because mental illness is not a real disease is one reason, another reason is there is no cure so they can't do much, and thirdly you probably had a panic attack because you don't want to be in school. If going to school makes you feel uncomfortable don't go.

    • @collectorofmyst2107

I'm sorry, what? Mental illness might not be a disease, but it certainly is a sickness. And presently, only some mental illnesses have no cure. Others do. Insomnia can be cured through therapeutic meditation. Depression can be cured through psychiatric sessions. OCD and Anxiety can be calmed, by facing them and eventually conquering them. Medication will also work, but it is only for the extremes or by personal request by the patient, or their parent/guardian.

I have ocd and anxiety, and last week I had a couple of really bad days.
When I opened up and told my friend about how everything triggers my ocd, and I've had 2 panic attack just that day, she told me sh'es sure if I just decide to not let it happen it won't.
I told her that it doesn't work that way, believe me, and she just rolled her eyes and said the most condescending "whatever you say", as if I'm a child that's exaggerating about nonsense.
I can't start t explain how much that hurt.

TL;DR: Physical illnesses often aren't taken seriously either, especially for those with chronic illnesses. We also expedience ableism within the medical field, and should work to improve the entire healthcare system to better benefit everyone
Hi! I'm a physically disabled and mentally ill person, and while I like the message this video is trying to provide, the physical illness is actually only true for otherwise able-bodied people. Many people with chronic conditions spend years trying to get a diagnosis, or don't get one altogether. During that time, we're often unable to work and unable to get any mobility aids (due to insurance) or disability income, both of which we desperately need. We're constantly being told to "just take an Advil," or gaslit into believing our symptoms are normal. Once we do get diagnosed, at best we can start treatments to potentially reduce symptoms (not cure, in most cases). It might be a bit easier to get accommodations or disability income. Beyond that, it doesn't change much

Not to start a gender war, but one major advantage women have over men in our society is that if women show emotion it's just them being emotional and you are obligated to help them but when a man is dealing with serious mental illness he's just told to "Man up" or "Deal with it you are a grown man" like wth even is this reasoning.

    • @amandaflowers95

Except when a woman has actual problems she's often accused of being "hysterical" or it's all in her head. So it's a double edged sword.

    • @zhongven4ever

Just like Chris said, not often. I am a woman, and I do know well that men deal with a lot of expectation. Woman, just like you said, are hysterical, but when we truly talk about it, people listens and help and don't tell us to " tough up"
Woman can discuss their feeling to her own friend. But if man does that, he can be mock and call a "wimp"
If man ask woman for help, he will be mock by the society for being "weak"

So relatable. Please promise me that if you suffer you will stay strong. What I do in times of darkness is literally tell myself "I'm strong, I'm safe, I'm smart, I'm talented, I'm capable, I'm beautiful inside and out, I matter, I love myself" etc. over and over. It's so amazing what just telling yourself how to think and what to think can shake off the hopelessness. Even if you might be embarrassed id really suggest getting into self-help. Reading and watching videos full of positivity and enlightenment can be so useful. If anything a distraction. Your body feeds off of your mind, and always remember you are in control and you can put your mind in its place! I've been there and I strive to be proof that we can overcome it all, even as someone who once had not a speck of confidence and told myself I was doomed forever. If what is holding you back is others, just remind yourself that nothing anyone does is a personal attack but their own demons as well. 💖

What's even harder is being both severely physically and mentally ill. I've been depressed/anxious for years, hospitalized, and am currently in an intensive outpatient program, struggling with suicidal thoughts/actions since I was 12. But I'm also ill physically, so even days I'm happy and motivated my body doesn't let me do the things I want to do. I have type 1 diabetes which has no cure and more recently moderate/severe chronic fatigue syndrome, I'm only 16 and already my body is falling apart from illness (and recovery is very slow, if even possible). Mental and physical illness are equally terrible things. They're both awful physically and mentally and drain you completely. I hope anyone struggling right now is able to seek help and get better soon. Most important part is a good support system. I don't know if I would be alive right now if it weren't for my mom.

Okay but I don't think you can compare mental illness (that follows you around for a very long time) with a cold that is over in a few days. Try comparing it with a chronical or long-time physical illness, things might look a bit different then.

Moospudding totally agree with you...Most mental illnesses are chronic conditions...mine is at least...I have a good happy and largely independent life but it's always there ticking away in the background...

sighs a lot mental illness does need to be taken more seriously, but chronic physical illness is treated just as poorly. i get the purpose of this but this isnt mental v physical illness this is mental illness v a minor cold.
when going to the doctor or friends for physical illness you still deal with a lot of dismissal and denial from professionals and friends alike.
the issue here is bigger than "asking for help", there needs to be a societal change where people stop teaching others to dismiss symptoms like nausea and pain. everyone needs to be treated equally whether their illness is outwardly visible or not.

  • @thetrianglewaffle

Thankyou so much for posting this video! I think the problem with mental illness is that not everyone has experienced the pain whereas everyone knows the pain of a cold or broken leg but fewer people have felt the pain or anxiety or depression for example. This is where the problem lies with the ignorance to how painful mental illness' really are.

I feel like I probably have ADHD, depression, and anxiety, but I'm a minor and don't really have anyone to ask for help because I can't ask my mom for reasons I don't feel like talking about publicly on the Internet, and if I try to ask any teachers, since I go to a Christian school, they'll just tell me to pray about it, like that'll magically fix it instantly without any other sources of help.

Its really hard when theirs no one supporting you but their are many help lines like kids help phone who will be willing to hear you. You may be a minor but you still have a say in your health maybe (if possible) you could tell your mom your feeling physically ill go to the doctor and on your own (because you have every right to talk to your doctor in confidentiality) talk to them about what you've been feeling and disclose that you think you have a mental illness, hopefully your doctor can help you take the next step to getting help.

It's awesome that Buzzfeed makes a video like this. Especially for the people who do suffer from a mental illness, know that you're not alone, even though only a few might understand what you are going through, you still don't have to do it alone. There are people out there that do care, that do want to listen to you, without judging or coming with advices and solutions that you didn't ask for. If you're reading this, and you suffer, please, find someone you trust, a friend, a family member, heck, maybe even your doctor, and tell your story.
Hold on, take your time to find a way to live with it, and please, have mercy on yourself.
I hope that you'll get to live better days soon.

I've been through depression 3 years ago. I felt empty, like I couldn't really feel any emotions. Depression is not feeling sad, it is not being able to feel anything, and it's difficult because sometimes people around you want to help but they don't understand what you're going through and sometimes they even make it worse. If you are going through this right now I wish all the power in the world to endure and overcome this. Most important of all, don't be afraid of seeking professional attention, mental illness is a disease like any other and should be treated like one, just don't jump right away on any meds, see a therapist! talk about what you're going through and try to keep your day simple. Keep around you people who understand you and are there to truly support you. Remember that you are unique, and you deserve to live your life to the fullest. I wish you the best!

What about the people with physical illness who don't recover? Or the people with physical illness who don't get taken seriously by doctors? What about people with physical illness who develop mental illness due to their inability to accept their bodies? What about people with chronic illness? Terminal illness? I'm not degrading mental illness, I'm just saying that not everyone is as accepting of people with chronic illness as depicted in the video - we don't get a 'get well soon' text, we get the 'why am I not surprised' text instead. Some of us don't get to recover. I think the comparison between a chronic illness and a mental illness would have been more fitting. A cold is a bad example.

The *Why am I not surprised* and the *Feel better soon!* hit a little to close to home.

  • @BellaSnape

having a mental illness and watching this video really hits close to home. it's hard having a mental illness especially when people take certain reactions and emotions caused by this illness into a bad way, thinking you're being rude ect... It's so hard for people to realise that mental illness is just as bad as physical illnesses. and mental illness compared to certain physical illnesses, is usually worse, because getting rid of a scaring illness like anxiety and depression, it takes very long. you don't just get hurt and heal in a matter of time. you heal for years on end. and alot of the time, mental ilnesses don't go away, they are always there biting at you. plus, i wish kids with mental illnesses were taken more serious. theres days where i can't get out of bed, yet i have to still go to school and work because im not 'sick' ..

When this lands on my recommendation, I thought why not watch it.
My thoughts were it won't reflect about what I feel, then as I watched it I was like, "Oh my god... this is me..." I at first started crying, cause it reminded me so much of when I went to rehab for my MDD and Anxiety. How that going to rehab made me worse.
I'm sharing this with a few friends and family... in hopes that they will understand the differences between these two illnesses.
Thank you so much for making this.

+MiniBites if you are trying to downplay cancer in comparison to a mental illness then you are EXTREMELY wrong. Everything you just stated about cancer isn't exactly true especially when it comes to people's opinions on dying. Try telling that to someone who is terminal, had cancer for over 15 years, has had more than 100 surgeries, radiation treatments(which causes its own problems including internal bleeding, lack of appetite, weakness, etc), blood transfusions, and so much more. The truth is there are varying levels of physical illness just like mental illness and it was very ignorant of buzzfeed to try to compare the two. Simply making a video about how serious mental illness is would have done the trick but instead they caused a war in the comments. Typical buzzfeed.

    • @mariejohnson8925
      @mariejohnson8925 8 років тому

Simon I agree with you. Not a fan of this video. Mental illnesses and physical illnesses can both vary. To compare a mental illness to a common cold was not the best way to get the message across.

+ElleSophi I'm sorry if I insulted you that much, all I said was what I thought. Why call me an ignorant, disgusting fool? That makes no sense what so ever. Since there's a few comments here that corrected me, I would change my opinion/thought. It depends on what sort of mental illness or physical illness a person has. Also Elle, instead of insulting me, you could have just corrected me politely. I didn't mean any harm, but I appreciate you telling me more about cancer.

There are so many people suffering with these issues every single day, but there is a disappointing lack of social awareness surrounding the suffering of people with invisible diseases.

Yeah people definitely do that (pisses me off to no end since I actually have mental illness) but it's better not to assume. Because like they said in the video everyone experiences it differently so it can be almost impossible to tell. And people who are actually suffering don't need to be told they're faking it. (Trust me)

    • @karissaslife6950

This is really ignorant. Just because you haven't gotten it diagnosed doesn't mean it isn't real. Some people try to tell others about their mental illness and just get told it's not serious and not ACTUALLY depression or something else when it actually is and just hasn't been diagnosed yet.

    • @TWDaryl
      @TWDaryl 8 років тому +3

***** I know I know, but the idea that someone might be told their condition isn't real because of all the people making a false diagnosis... It makes me cringe and it can be pretty hurtful. People with clinical depression hate their lives enough; they don't need to be devalued anymore like that.

  • @Gingenus

saying that your "mental illness" is holding you back is just an excuse. if you want something then you have to work for it. these people who say "I can't work because I have anxiety" are just wanting a reason to be lazy. jobs aren't fun, nobody enjoys them, but don't use things as an excuse to not be a useful member in society

+Jackson McKagan not everyone suffers it the same way. I get what you're saying cuz I fight against it & go out & participate in my life. But some people just can't control that, I used to shut myself out & was just not able to do anything. It still happens sometimes but it's not very common.

"I have really bad depression that makes me completely exhausted all the time and leaves me with little motivation to do what I want, much less work. Plus my anxiety makes my chest hurt like hell because the smallest things stress me out. And when it's too much I break down hyperventilating and then suffocating and practically choking on my own throat, so I have to take it slow because that's really embarrassing to have happen in public. So it's really hard for me to do lots of things and that's why I'm not as energetic or fast about a lot of stuff."

This makes me so emotional. People need to understand how serious mental illnesses can be. They can be just as bad as physical thing's, and it needs time to heal and medicine. School nurses and teachers epically need to understand this! Anxiety and panic attacks aren't just for attention, neither is self harm, or anything you can't help. Just UGHH the feelsss

been suffering anxiety all my life...it's tough explaining it to other people without sounding like I'm crazy, because unfortunately mental illness has an incredibly negative stigma attached to it. I think a lot of people would find comfort in knowing that it is extremely more common than we as a society assume. I hated getting help- I felt defeated, but looking back it was the best thing I've ever done. No one should live like that- every human on planet Earth has the right to happiness.
