being on twitter since 2014, the site has completely changed. in 2014 people were showing others how to cook crack rocks and nobody blinked an eye. This is why I’m against banning Twitter, I despise the people on that app but it serves as an effective containment chamber. The thing is, Twitter has more influence over people than Tumblr. Tumblr was used by teenagers while Twitter is used by celebrities, brands, etc; These people had to change for the new tumblr refugees so it just became the norm. If we stopped taking what people on Twitter say seriously, we’d have a less toxic environment. Seriously 4 years ago people on Tumblr complained about everything but we just ignored them, but they’re on Twitter now so I guess we have to care for them???? As someone who was a Newgrounds user from 1999 up until the Tumblr NSFW ban, I cannot emphasise how big of a disaster this banning was for smaller communities and websites like Newgrounds and Neocities. These people flooded into well-established but severely outnumbered communities and essentially forced us off of our own websites that we'd been using for decades. I absolutely despise Tumblrites and their culture.

The biggest problem that came from this is that Twitter is a lot more of a mainstream social media platform that what Tumblr was. A lot of big companies, politicians, and even Hollywood took to Twitter and these Tumblr displacements brought a lot of their "vocal minority" Unpopular opinions with them and managed to influence a lot policies that have been established in recent years. Why did we get a lot of unpopular box office bombs of films that were reboots of popular movies but featured All Female Casts, or a replacement of a beloved main character in favor of essentially a Mary Sue character? Simple because people on Twitter complained as passed off their unpopular opinions as Popular opinions. Why did Amazon suddenly pull certain products off their virtual shelves that came from Japan, claiming they were actually sexualized 15 year olds(when some are actually characters in their 20's), because Twitter. Why are Politicians trying to pass unpopular bills that go to extreme lengths like making a misgendering of someone who is nonbinary, a hate crime. Once again Twitter. These Toxic folks who proudly shared the #KillAllMen hashtag went to Twitter and tried to pass of this kind of stuff as if we all think Men are Trash when in reality the vast majority of women have no such opinions.

Tumblr used to be the best for art, both sfw and nsfw. I would just go on there, ignore all the bs drama, look at some art, and be on my my merry way. That's why the exodus to twitter was so annoying. Tumblr is much more convenient when it comes to looking at art, but on Twitter it can be excruciating because many artists I like (most just for the art) also just happen to tweet like 8 hot takes a day and scrolling through all that to get to any art is a special kind of torture.

As a current tumblr user, this video is unfortunately Very Accurate. Twitter today looks nearly exactly like Tumblr 3-6 years ago, and has left Tumblr- not dead, but somehow one of the chillest places left? Occasionally you see a discourse monstrosity pass by your dash before never hearing about it again. Sometimes people come from twitter to rain hate on "problematic" tumblr users who had a post screenshotted and posted on twitter. Tumblr hasn't been the same since the ban no, but the mass exodus wasn't as big a catastrophe as it looked from the outside. Everyone said they would leave tumblr, and then the next day they just kept on posting.
Also the porn bots are still here. They haven't gone away, they are still here. It is regular ritual to go through your followers to block n report porn bots. More keep coming. They do not know their time is over, poor things.
The worst part of the Exodus was the Explosion of Critical Roll and D&D in popularity at the time. My poor, poor /tg/...

i personally witnessed a fairly big artist getting rained on with hate like in 2019 for being "transphobic" for using the word "femboy" in one of their comics.
and i encountered a joke page full of "PC jokes", where literally all of the comments unironically believed that mansplaining was a thing
i encountered a lot of nasty people who would call you homophobic and claim that you hate them because you didn't like their ship.
and a hivemind of people that thought their gay ship was supposed to be canon and called the writers of the show their ship was in "idiotic" for not expanding on the romance the characters were supposed to have (even though those characters were friends in the show)

I had quit tumblr only because of the weird text post update that made it _super_ inconvenient for roleplayers. Had to work around it with an extension. But the last time I went back, the site had flagged two of my terrible doodles as nsfw because they had shirtless men.... but the nsfw roleplays I and others did were still up... and there were bots in my inbox... Rule enforcement's still as whacky as ever, I see lol

My rule of thumb goes as far as two things;
Is the art based on real people?
Is the artist in question committing similar acts or showing actual intentions with said art?
If any of those questions is answered positively, then there’s a problem with it, because inherently the mentally deranged aren’t because of the art in it of itself; they were already sick before that.

To those who weren't there at the time, the actual reason why Tumblr banned NSFWs was because Apple threatened to remove Tumblr from their appstore for lack of moderation.
Also, Tumblr is not going to recover form this because other than the """culture""" they had, there's nothing good to it. The layout is not easy to follow and their archive system is dogshit. Finding posts from a long time ago takes forever because you cannot just search them up. You have to pull up the poster's page and slowly scroll all the way down through all the posts they ever made until you find the one.
EDIT: Yes, yes, I know the few who remained on Tumblr are keeping it alive, but it will never be the powerhouse it used to be. Even if it is currently one of the least toxic blogging websites out there.
Also, Apple didn't 'threaten to remove' Tumblr from the app store, Apple actually did remove Tumblr from the appstore and banning NSFW was a damage control maneuver. I got it wrong the first time. My bad.

You can search by month. It’s only on desktop, but it has been there since at least 2013. Tags can be used appropriately, or used to converse without bogging down the original post. To me, it makes much more sense than Twitter or Instagram, but to each their own I suppose

I'm still unreasonable pissed that most artists went to twitter and Instagram... you know, those platforms TERRIBLE for sharing art, which use image formats that are not even real, where the basic user hates even mildly adult or daring content. And where people get cancelled for the slightest offenses. Instagram does not even let you upload images at a decent quality. Yet almost all artist fled to those sites. It's like abandoning the Nevada desert and moving into the abandoned Chernobyl reactor to escape radiation poisoning.

Then Elon Musk bought Twitter and people ran back to Tumblr. And soon after that, there was the Reddit blackout and even more people jumped back to Tumblr.
Now Tumblr just needs to unban porn, and the internet can find balance once more (even though some artists found workarounds hours after the ban…).

To everyone who are pissed about the whole Steven Universe thing don't worry 4chan taught them a lesson.
Basically after the whole harassment of the artist happened 4chan caught wind of it. They were debating on whether or not to actually get involved. Some people wanted to leave it be while other wanted to take advantage of the situation. After all Tumblr and 4chan were long time enemies of each other so it'd be a good idea to let the easily offensive bully the easily offended so they all decided to begin the trolling. Even though they all decided to troll the ever loving shit out of Tumblr they need someone to do the job. After hours of discussing one brave anon came forward and decided to be the martyr for this mighty cause.
The plan was simple: Create an account called "Steven Universe edits", come off as a Steven Universe fan account and attract the attention of SU fans, then start white washing every non white character and paint their hair blonde and their eyes blue, now let the feast begin.
The beasts went rabid as the account were soiling their beloved characters. The trolling went on for days and days as the sanity of the SU fans were rapidly plummeting. The account even went as far to edit Rebecca Sugar (the creator of Steven Universe) with blonde hair and even whiter skin. They even edited Onion as a black character but the twist was that he breaks into houses and steals things. Even the husband of Rebecca Sugar got involved but instead of hating on the account he was simply disappointed at how SU fans were so easily falling for the bait.
Then the rapture came. The day that would forever live on in infamy. The account did a face reveal and the identity of the user was finally revealed. It wasn't a straight white man, it was trans black woman! The SU fans back pedalled and they back pedalled hard. They switched from bloodthirsty and enraged to sorrowful and looking for forgiveness. Even though the account has long since went silent it's legacy still lives on.

It’s because Apple removed the Tumblr app from the App Store for containing 18+ content. In order to get the app back on the store, they had to ban all 18+ content.
The internet was so much better when there were no rules, then someone decided to let a bunch of silly billies have a say over what you could and couldn't do

Honestly, I actually like tumblr more now. Its super chill nowadays after all the toxic people there moved to twitter and the younger users grew up and matured.
You just made a light bulb go off in my head. Now it all makes sense. The banning of some of my favorite subreddits and turning Reddit into NeoTumblr, it was the Tumblr immigration that changed the nature of the site. I had never thought about that before but it makes so much sense

The funny thing is that tumblr is still alive? We're still fuckin here, chillling. In fact, after the whole shitshow with twitter turning into Elon's personally chewtoy and Reddit screwing over moderators, a lot of people fled TO tumblr.
The thing about tumblr is that you only see posts from people you *choose* to follow, unless you go out of your way to seek other posts. If you see people being toxic, it's SO easy to just cut them out of your life and move on. Just unfollow them or block them, or usually just ignore them. If you curate your experience well, it's pretty nice.
It's really surreal to see people talk about how tumblr is dead when I keep seeing Brand New Tumblr Memes being shared on other platforms. Like, I've been on the site through at least 2 events that were supposed to be the "Death of Tumblr"

I believe they removed porn because of Apple's anti-porn rule on their appstore. Apple complained to Tumblr and threatened them with removing their app. Of course Twitter and Reddit are still allowed to be on the app store and they allow porn too but that's a topic for another day.

Then in early 2020 my experience took a massive nosedive after someone falsely accused me of “Being a pedophile” just so that they can get some brownie points for canceling me. Ever since my experience with Twitter was a mix of “Pretty good” and “Miserable”. I’ve spent the last 2 years absolutely stumped to what caused my Twitter experience to be so terrible… But this actually explains it pretty well. Thank you.

As I recall, Tumblr actually banned NSFW content because Apple told them they wouldn't be allowed on their app store if they allowed it to exist on their platform.
That, and because Tumblr didn't moderate enough because of the raging NSFW (Illegal contents or otherwise) Bots bloating up the sites and sending spams to users.
And that was the flammable object that the spark needed to make tumbr end like this and affecting other social media in the process...

Just discovered this channel and subbed! This explains so much. I joined reddit in 2019 and one of the first subs I joined was the r/Fantasy community because I was also getting into fantasy novels and wanted recommendations. I loved that sub and got so much useful book info. Then in 2020, I was banned from it. Why? Suddenly there were posts about "social justice" stuff and it confused me because it really contributed nothing to fantasy discourse. I had an argument with another member about how N.K Jemisin used divisive identity politics that turned people of her books and I was called a white supremacist despite me being black. Next incident was when I posted about how the HBO Lovecraft country was wasting the potential of using H.P Lovecraft's lore by only focusing on racism and identity politics when it should be about otherworldly horror. One commenter just posted that I was a member of r/conservative and that made me racist. I just told her to post whatever she wants that I don't care. Afterwards, my post was deleted and I was banned from the subreddit.
Ironically enough, I still have issues with pornbots. Over the last month or so I've gotten no less than about half a dozen of them.
I get one nearly every day via text. I block and report them every time, and recently they've become a lot less common. Now I see them once a week or so.

Its amazing what tumblina artists draw as their self image and what they actually look like.
I used Tumblr extremely infrequently from like 2012 to '19, and I remember happening to log in right around the time the NSFW ban was announced. It was an absolute meltdown site-wide.
Tumblr had a lot of issues, but the less toxic parts of the site definitely had their appeal, and I've never seen anywhere that quite replicated it. The customization of individual blogs was actually insane and almost limitless. The UI was clunky but it fit the character of the site.
i think the main issue is how you cant search up specific posts. there are certain accounts that make the site worth it, like gaud and pukicho, but other than that, its kinda just the demo of twitter
