I bought MCO back in 2002, when I moved into an apartment and finally had cable internet. It was the first and only online game I paid a monthly fee for. On a broadband connection the experience was great. It was a really fun game, I had a lot of fun for a few months, and then EA pulled the plug on the servers. That was the day I vowed to never again pay for online-only games.
The car customization and building was a fantastic aspect of the game. It was a great game and plenty of people were still playing it when they killed the servers. I'm still salty about it to this day.

why they shut down the server ? what happen ?

    • @rars0n
      @rars0n 6 років тому +94

EA claimed that there weren't enough people to continue supporting the game, but I played it right up until they shut the servers down and there never seemed to be a shortage of players. My guess is that there were plenty of people playing it but they just didn't feel it was worth it to keep the servers running.
EA seems to be quick to shut servers down for games that are a couple years old.

I absolutely loved this game, especially during it's first several months.
The modifying and building up of your own car and engine with decently accurate component simulation, and racing for actual stakes (your car if ballsy enough), has never been done since.
I made some serious real life cash selling in game currency on ebay. Actually bought my first real car at 17 because of it. I owe MCO so much...

They Brought in the Toyota Supra at the very tail end of the game because of people losing interest, cost of servers and the rise of The Fast and the Furious scene. It was both loved and hated in the game, but kind of funny because when you modded it, it would have a V8 Blower sticking out of the hood.

Man do I miss Motor City online I used to play the shit out of this every afternoon until it was gone!
I remember the drag race was so competitive you could replace every part of the car and people were tweaking and modifying and everything was just out of experimentation until you got the perfect time. The 32 Ford Coupe was a great car for drag races, and I remember playing until I could afford the 1970 Mach 1 Mustang for sooo long. Thanks for covering this, sorry you didn't get to play online back in the day. I would be surprised if no one has ever made a personal server for this. Like I said people were super competitive

This game was ahead of it's time.. At least for me, I also didn't have an internet worthy of online play at the time.. not even close. My PC multiplayer endeavors in the late 90s and earlier 2000s was restricted to local network. Good times though because nowadays I think online gaming sucks... Having all your friends in the same room with a bunch of PCs locally hooked up together was 1000 more fun that it is today playing online with a bunch of faceless strangers... I rarely play any multiplayer now.

The real fun of this game was the auction house!! OMG I had soooo much fun buying and selling in the auction house.chat was insane you had to be incredibly fast to keep up.
And the amount of tinkering you could do to the cars puts GT and Forza to shame. Motor City online was the greatest racing game I've ever played and I haven't ran into a single online game since equal to mco.

This game was awesome at it's time. In the game you received a paycheck, i don't remember if it was a once a day thing or what. But you earn money that way and from races. You bought a junker, went on an auction house and bought parts to fix and beef up your rat rod! Parts from different engine blocks, camshafts, headers, exhausts....all which had an affect on your car. There was track racing and drag racing as well. I "think" you could race for slips, im not sure. They kinda redid this game and it was called Need for Speed World, but it wasn't the same, it lost a lot of what made MCO great. An that game is shutdown too. I wish MCO would get a proper remake.

I think there's something to be said about the incredible level of detail they put into this game. If you're going to create a game where's it's just racing, you might as well make it as immersive as possible. I was a tester for this game for a few month before it went online. The game was incredible for its time. You started out with a plain car then went to the garage and bought upgrades. The challenges were great. It also had an option to take pics of your car and save them as you upgraded. I was 45 when I did t he testing and have missed it ever since. I went thru many racing games but was never as excited by any of them. I may try and get the version you are running just for the nostalgia. Thanks for making the video it brought back memories.

The supra, and mitsubishi were special releases that I think were tied in with the Fast and Furious movie success if I remember correctly. They were pretty difficult to get and I think it came from winning a pretty big race that would be considered sort of 'late game' at this point. They were some of the final cars released before it was shut down. Sort of hinted to the community that something weird was going on.

    • @trukr817
      @trukr817 6 років тому +26

The Supra and Eclipse were both in Righteous Rides at $1,000,000.00 each. Neither one had the first person graphics, so it looked like you were just sitting in the air above the road and saw the tire marks that the front tires left. They were both powered by Ford 351, the cars were rushed and lazy. On top of that, they felt out of place.

Sadly, with more and more games going to a 'Games as Services' model, this will be the norm. Heck, we will be lucky to be able to do even this with future titles. On top of that, with 'Cloud Gaming' being sold as the future, we may never even be able to play a game like this in the future period.
I am glad that there has been some effort to allow Motor City Online to be playable after it was long gone. I hope that the Destinys and Overwatches of today will get this treatment in the future so that they never truly go away.

Yea, I wonder what type of insane fan-made hacks and tricks are going to be necessary to play Destiny or Destiny 2 in 30 years once it's totally gone and replaced with other products... if it'll even be possible. And just because we often make fun of those games doesn't mean these issues of game preservation aren't important or that someone may actually want to play Destiny in the future. Once Destiny 12 (or whatever) is out and the old servers are totally gone, there should still be a way to play the old games though, ideally.

I played this game religiously as a kid, to this day it's the best car game I have ever played. It was like a racing mmo rpg. You could truly build cars in this game. It was all about power to weight ratios and car classes. Not sport, street, or racing "kits" but real branded individual parts and the selections was huge I believe it was over 2000. There were chat lobbies with different scenes like the diner, the top leveled players in the chat would get there cars in the parking places. I spent hours chatting with people watching cars pull in and drive out. Clubs would host car shows in these lobbies where you could pay an entry fee and everyone would vote on who has the coolest car and winner got the money. I hosted and participated in these all the time. Cam shafts, pistons, engine blocks, springs with different spring rates, super chargers, nitrous kits. and everything effected the way the cars drove from weight to rpm ranges the way it handled even the exhaust sound. I had a folder full of print outs with different build combination for different cars at different tracks and kept track of what works and what doesn't. It was everything games like forza horizon try to be today with so much more detail. Rare parts and cars with special modifications or paint jobs you could only get through online auction or trading other players. They even started adding player submitted paint jobs to cars and then auction them off. I used to wake up before school to check auctions and bid on cars with rare parts to get them cheaper than what they were worth on the open market. Then use those rare cars and parts to sell or to win top times on tracks for myself and my club. Stuff like chop tops that had better aero and top speed, convertibles, fenderless, bumperless, to decrease weight and different combinations of them all. Weekly leader boards to compete for the top times, bragging rights, and cash prizes. Turf wars that required people working together in clubs to get the best average top times. Everyone started with a rusty car, in the beginning you could barely afford to repair your car after races so you had to keep racing with damaged cars. or do sponsored races where everyone drove a predetermined car. Parts wore out and had to be scrapped. even car bodies wore out if you raced them long enough. Even with the game coming to an end it was a lot of fun the Dev's who were very active in the game and you could chat with them in lobbies or race them in events started giving out crazy cars. like cars with no hoods or other body parts. I was given a hoodless convertible gto. They started adding modern cars just for the hell of it. Oh and I almost forgot all the one time special holiday themed stuff you would get that would become rare. My favorite cars were my chop top reaper camaro, fenderless bumperless chop top skull coupe, sponsored convertible vette, and of course my formula firebird with rare parts that would dominate goose point with a setup so good people would give me their formula and pay me to put the same parts in it and trade it back. or I would lend it out to club members to post times with for turf wars. My dad even played, he got so competitive in it he bought a racing wheel and upgraded from aol dial up to our first broadband internet connection.

The Supra and Eclipse.. Let me tell you a little story... So a little movie came out in 2001 called The Fast and the Furious. What were the two hero cars of that movie? An Eclipse and a Supra. So MCO was getting stale, they didnt want to update it, no new cars, pay to win wasnt a thought of thing yet ect, so to test if the gamers wanted muscle cars or tuners, they used MCO as a guinea pig, injecting the car bodies in to see what would happen. Well...Since we hadnt had new cars in a very long time, they got bought by literally everyone. The hard core racers loved them because they were light and had a lower co efficient of drag, and the kids bought them because duh, imports. EA missread this data as, nobody wants muscle cars, and scrapped MCO for Underground. Thats it, it sucks, we wanted more old cars, tracks and an updated c=game engine, but were scrapped in the import craze.

Great video. It just makes me sad that the NFS series will never be like this. The race tracks were really creative back then. It was like a theme ride. Today NFS race tracks are bland and boring. If EA is really serious in bringing this franchise back to life they need to bring back themed tracks.

This was the best car game I have ever played. The car builds were insane, I remember selling car setups for in-game money. You could choose engine compression, cam size, carbs, heads, rear gear ratio, transmission, springs, shocks, all brake components. If your car was not set up right, you would get destroyed in races. I was in a club called "Tin Indians", we were a bunch of Pontiac fans. We would also go into the file and change the car skins, like making a general lee and all types of special paint, only the person that changed their files could see it, but it was still amazing. The car and part auction were also amazing, once in a while, rare parts and paint schemes would pop up. The auction was also a great way to make money, I would get up at a certain time in the am when servers had fewer people and watch the auctions, buy special parts and then just relist them for more money.

The customization of the cars, the officially licensed parts, the community feel, seeing you car pull up to the diner in the lobby if you were high enough in the ranking. Since we're talking about older Need for Speed like titles here, I'll just put this comment here. I've dug up an old demo of NFS3 on the internet which is different from the regular one and also happens to be a demo I played back in the day. You race in Rocky Pass like in the previous one, but instead of Corvettes, here you race with Lambo Countach(with an engine sound of one from PS1 if I'm right). What's interesting about it how there are several different things that are actually borrowed from the PS1 release and even NFS2. For example the music is present, the flyby to your car is the same as the one in NFS2 for the knockout race, race countdown is the same as in NFS2/3 on ps1 with the same flying numbers and letters, police declare they're in pursuit of a Lamborghini instead of a Countach, the police speak on their police speaker while chasing you which is present in a PS1 version and cops have a different sound while ticketing/busting you. There might be more, but that's all I can remember from the demo i continuously played from my computer magazine's demo disc. Also I might be wrong, but this game could only be played in software render, as I tried playing on D3D and it didn't run. If anyone's interested, I can upload it and link it as well.
EDIT: I had tried it on my Win7 64bit laptop and it runs smoothly on a wide screen and it isn't even stretched. The only problem I came across was the mild sound cracking during the gameplay, but nothing too serious. Also the graphics are set to minimum and from what I can see, it doesn't look too different from the final release's software mode.
Now onto the newfound differences between this and a final version:
    - Countach you're driving actually leans while steering and steering seems more responsive but still stiff
    - the cops are all shown on the map as pink spots on the minimap and also, they have a significantly unfair rubberband. They can be dodged to prevent them from ticketing/busting.
    - if you enable the list of racers, you and your rival will be shown just below the upper HUD(below the speedometer).
Another EDIT: Tried to run the game again and the screen messes up badly. After this I had tried to run it in d3d mode. It actually ran without the screen break, but it still lagged in comparison to the first launch. It seems that one run messed up something within my drivers and what not. I actually deleted the file and transfered it from my virtual Win98 again to see if it's only the game's files being corrupted, but it doesn't seem to be the case.. I'll try to figure something out.

This was the first game I ever bought as a child for PC at age 12, and luckily my mother let me use her credit card when we found out it had a monthly subscription after installing on the family PC because there isn't a game to this day that I reminisce about more than MCO. This video really doesn't do the game justice... It honestly only portrays about 15% of the actual game. This game had an entire car catalog of parts. There was no tier 1, 2, 3 upgrades.. You literally had to change every engine and suspension competent individually and each small change would have some type of affect on the car. Literally thousands of different configurations could be had. I remember making page after page of spreadsheets with different builds. An online auction house where you could not only buy and sell cars, but every hour new randomly generated cars would be listed. Some would have rare paint schemes, some fenderless, choptop, convertible or had rare parts. Everything had wear and tear, and had to be replaced at some point or your cars performance would decline. The DEVs were so close with the community too. Every week there would be community held events, made for and by the players in the community, and the DEV team would always donate one off cars (paint/fender combinations) to the winner of these events. Was just such a great time, and iv never been more upset about a game being shut down. I remember when they shut the game down, they offered everyone Ultima Online or The Sims Online... Lols. Not being much of a gamer at all, the very first night I had the game I was scammed out of my rusty noob starter car and I remember spending the next 3 days not knowing what to do, before someone showed me the sponsored car races, where you didn't need your own car to race in. SO MUCH FUN.

You can build a custom engine with every part. Different camshaft, fuel injectors, carburetors, cylinder heads, suspension parts, brakes, wheels, etc... on and on, and the parts store would have different parts. You could drag race for pink slips. This game was fantastic and the monthly cost was pricey for its time. but those who played loved it. You could swap engines into different cars. Great vid some nostalgia for sure.

I mainly liked collecting the rare paint cars and still have screenshots from playing. The ‘64 mustang and Vette were the best cars until the Supra was available. It went downhill after that. This game was fantastic. It's cool that you can still race but there was so much more to the game. You could swap pretty much any part of the drive line out, change pistons, cam, engine blocks, rear end differentials, shocks, tires etc.. There were rare versions of the cars, convertibles, runningboard less, fenderless, chopped tops, rare paint schemes. You could race tracks like you were or drag race for in game currency or pink slips. You started off with a rust bucket and race your way to fixing up your car up or winning/ buying newer ones. It was geared toward the 30s-70s muscle/hot rod cars. Then EA released a patch that added a couple newer cars, Mitsubishi Eclipse and Toyota Supera I assume trying to get a younger crowd interested. When EA decided to pull the plug they offered Ultima Online or one of The Sims games as compensation. I'm still salty they gave up on MCO. MCO was the greatest racing game of all! #MotorCityOnline2 Make it happen!

This is the best we can do right now. Unless you think you can do better and reverse engineer the codeand create a server, i wouldn't be complaining.

In the game you can do everything to the cars not just motors but pistons, cams, coolers, superchargers, didernt transmissions, tires and blah blahThis is the one the best games I have played online. The car modding was awesome. And they had a radio DJ playing music in game and you could request songs.

Didn't 2142 also have ofline? I remember playing that at a friends house once. I know 1942 and Vietnam had ofline.

You mentioned midnight club and I instantly got depressed. I was washed away to midnight club 2 and all of the nostalgia there was from racing motorcycles past the glass pyramids in Paris or jumping a huge bridge in Tokyo. And now I don't have it.
I've been getting this feeling a lot lately in regards to gaming. It's really getting to me.

This has been bothering my mind for a few years now, does anybody know the name of a racing game from the early 2000s where you race with regular cars but you have pickups like in Mario Kart (snowballs, force field, gaint front bumper etc)?

Blur does that, though it's released more recently: 2010

LGR yeah this seems to be right (just look’t at a clip) it's just that I remember it to be more Vivid in color and the tracks had a lot of jumps and shortcuts🤔...and like I said, early 2000s so it was probably on the PS2 or early days of Xbox 360

This is probably way off but I can only think of the game Twisted Metal, although I doubt it.
      ...Maybe CTR: Crash Team Racing
      Or Road Trip Adventure

I absolutely loved this game. The races are just scratching the surface of the full game. The online aspecct of it, modding your car with different parts, nos!, drag racing, racing for pinks, betting, auctions!!, the old timey music radio stations in the menus, chatting with other car people/gamers. It was all so amazing. I really got my hopes up around 2010 -2011 when Motor World Online (MCO clone) was in development and releasing gameplay videos that looked like a updated version of MCO. It had a lot of potential but it seems like it has also died. Will they ever replace this?
