    I remember finding out that the sound effects for R were loose wave files. I replaced "go" with a fart sound..."Ready, set, braaap"

      @EpicEmberOriginal 6 років тому +13

      But what about the actual music files? Could you replace the R music with, say, Sonic Adventure music? Or music from any Sonic game thereafter really since many of them had lyrics

      @@EpicEmberOriginal On that topic, I remember discovering that the music in Sonic Adventure 1's original PC port was just WMA files. I made a bunch of music swaps as a result. Some of them were fitting like replacing Emerald Coast's theme with Palmtree Panic's theme from the JP/PAL version of Sonic CD, others not so much like replacing Gamma's theme with Iron Man by Black Sabbath... (Get it, 'cause he's made of metal?... I was a dumb teenager...)

    I'm sure you've probably mentioned this on twitter or the like but, in current-year retrospect, Sonic and Knuckles Collection is even MORE fascinating with the context that some of the pc-ified soundtrack is taken from early prototype builds of the original game, before all the guest-musician shenanigins took place.

  • @SonicParadox
    @SonicParadox 6 років тому +735

    Some interesting facts:
    -Some copies of Sonic R PC didn't have music on the disc to manufacturing forgetting to add it.
    -Sonic & Knuckles Collection can be modded to add the original Genesis music.
    -Ecco the Dolphin has a mod that fixes all the bugs and adds the Sega CD music.

    There's this interview with one of the developers responsible for the port of Sonic CD, and on how his team managed to port the game to Windows before Windows gaming was mainstream and DirectX was a thing. It's a really fascinating read:
    www.sonic-cult.org/dispart.php?catid=1&gameid=5&subid=2&artid=2
    (Initial releases of Sonic CD for the PC didn't use DirectX, though the more common later releases do)

      In Italy we eat plain pizza without any sauce everyday! It's called "pizza bianca" (white pizza) and it's fucking good! It's the most common mid-morning snack, at least here in Rome.

    What a trip down memory lane. I totally forgot that I had The House of the Dead for PC back in the day.
    I didn't know they Virtua Cop, though.
    I hope to see a Capcom PC Games Retrospective from you some day.
    I see you have all the classic REs for the PC... I'm so jealous.

    I remember owning quite a few of the Sega PC games back in the day.
    Sega Rally 1 and 2.
    Sonic Collection, CD, 3D Flickies Island (awesome version of this on PC) and R.
    The House of the Dead.
    Enemy Zero.
    Daytona USA Deluxe.
    Panzer Dragoon.
    Good times. Sega really were still at their best during this era. I always wanted to get Bug and Ecco on PC but could never ever find a copy for sale in my local stores. I've since purchased both on Sega Saturn and Mega CD respectively.

    Is THAT why the music sounds different whenever I try to look it up? I had this collection as a kid and whenever I try to look up the specific music from this collection, the result always sounds different. And not different like "it's slightly different because of a warped memory", but different like it sounds like a completely different remix. Is everyone just uploading the MIDI songs online while I always heard the FM Synthesizer?

    • @stevethepocket
      @stevethepocket 6 років тому +1

      You're forgetting how panicked people were at the time that everything from their computers to the electrical grid would just straight-up quit working when Y2K hit because the average person knew jack squat about how computers worked. Probably a lot of people just slapped labels like that on their products in the hopes of getting people to distrust their competitors who didn't.

    the recent Sonic CD "remake" on Steam is particularly excellent
    ... incidentally made by some of the same folks involved in Sonic Mania
    and they stated its codebase started with the Win95 version of Sonic CD [or did it? Retro Engine]
    considering how they reverse-engineered the engine to use it in Mania, I'm wondering if they started with CD then

    had panzer dragoon demo for pc as a child, used to replay it a lot, amazing first level. and the music though, so nostalgic now. When you played that footage, I just feel such sadness, cause I can't return to that era, which seems to me as so pure and happy. I know it's not like that in reality, but it doesn't make it any easier.
