I'm reading through the Hitchhiker's series at the moment and I really enjoy watching your video after finishing a book. You give a great, quick summary of the plot, wich is nice before starting the next one , but more importantly, the really interesting background information, thanks a lot!
Thanks for the review. I really liked "So Long.." Partially because I am a sucker for a (mainly) happy ending, and really appreciated Arthur finally getting a break. It had a good bit of humour, and the story had a less mashed together feel than Life did.
I think my problem with Mostly Harmless stems from the fact that I *liked* this story, and I liked Fenchurch. I'm a romantic, and seeing Arthur find some measure of happiness after all the hell he's been through made me HAPPY. To then have Douglas throw it all away because he was going through a bad place personally just.. left me bitter. Also, I greatly appreciated that Marvin, possibly my favourite character, finally was allowed that moment of clarity and satisfaction before his death. Although I was happy to see him return in the radio drama's ending. I *really* like how they ended it, even if I found the whole "Arthur marooned on another world as the universe implodes around him" kind of a letdown after all had happened. As an aside, since you didn't cover it in this, I loved the truck driver who didn't know he was a rain god.
Thanks for doing this. I have to say this is my favourite of the books, maybe because it feels different. Don't get me wrong, I love the others (except for 'Mostly Harmless' for reasons that I'm sure are obvious) but the more personal touch and low key humour and above all character depth made this feel like not so much a departure but adding something. Also, having heard the radio version it amuses me to think that Arthur Dent and Arnold Rimmer have the same one true love.
Very good analysis. I've read the book twice and yet you managed to clear up a few points I was still kind of hazy on. I'm a big fan of Adams, but sometimes his prose is a little opaque.
This one is definitly my favorite out of the HGTTG series. It has a really cozy atmosphere overall. The feeling of coming home translates well to the reader. Keeping the absurd scifi elements low key and mostly in the background really works in their favor. Sometimes, less really is more.
Just finished this one! Damn, I did NOT think Douglas could write such an intriguing romance to be honest. SPOILER!!! I loved the flying parts, where they first flew together and he learned her feet were always inches off the ground. Loved it.
This book always felt to me like Douglas Adams was thoroughly sick of being expected to write _Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ books and was doing so under sufferance. The first two books were great but they really started to go downhill (in my opinion) from the third onward.
I hated this one. I don't think it's any good. Other books/phases present the uncaring cruelty of the universe in a way that is still funny. This story is just unfiltered cruelty. Between the horrible way Marvin was treated and how the punchline of the whole story seemed to be finally making Arthur happy, only to unmercifully rip it all away from him in the end was just gruesome. The real joke was the awful attempt at making Arthur's romance with Fenchurch believable. The whole thing was boring too. It felt like nothing actually happened.
So long and thanks for all the fish was my favorite of Douglas Adam's work. I truly appreciate you creating this.
I really liked it. But I just read it the other day. So maybe recency bias.
I love the way Douglas Adams looked at the world and at the facts he learned along the way.
Such a tragic loss and insight into our world.

So Long is actually my favorite of the series. I like Arthur coming home to Earth with wisdom from his adventure and finding happiness.
"Chinese Food when you want Italian"...I don't know why, but that anology now makes me want to find a copy of this book
Thanks for the review.

Wait, not Yvonne McGruder?
Ashley Tuchin No, Nirvanah Crane (Jane Horrocks played both her and Fenchurch).

my favourite of the books
I like the book, Chuck.
Because, for however short a time, Arthur Dent was happy.
I always loved this book, because it has so much heart. Look what a piece of egg shell I have found you.
That opening song makes me think of the cranberries every single time

Oh man. I just recently relistened to the Quandry phase of the radio play, which is essentially this I think?
I was searching a perfect circle lol song, same song title
Would you ever consider covering Anne McCaffrey and/or Marrion Zimmer Bradley's different series, Dragon Riders of Pern and Darkover, respectively?
Yay it's a reason to live
I remember when this book first came out, a good friend of mine said "I think this is the book where Douglas want's you to know he's fucked someone."
I gotta go reread this book, great review!

I thought this was the last book.. huh
It's a bit of a long trilogy.
Keep thinking that. I hated the next one(Book 6 was written after Adams died and is supposed tie up the loose ends. I didn't bother reading it.)
I feel as if this should have been the definitive ending to the series. Mostly Harmless ruined it for me.
This is the worst of the series. I remember it being such a letdown after the previous one, which was my favourite.
