It's pretty unsettling how much this song is an anthem for the end of a generation of people. Considering everything is linked to the 50's through the 80's, during the birth of the "Time is money" mindset, the cold war, the music video being set in a 50's period, plastic surgery becoming a thing during their generation...it kinda all works.
"The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the ‘Star Spangled Banner’, but in fact the message was this: So long and thanks for all the fish." - Douglas Adams
on facing certain death, the guide says this; "what to do when faced with certain death: consider that life has been good to you. alternatively, if this is not the case, more likely considering your situation, consider that it won't be bothering you much longer"
Saw (heard) this song performed in Knoxville. The people in my row were looking at each other like, "What the F is this crap". And the end, about 6 people cheered.
Still to this day a haunting call to action, or maybe a lament on the times. In short, it’s over and there’s no fixing it so make the best of what you have while we have it.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I lost my brother last August and I can't help but to hear his name in the song along with all the celebrities we've lost. He loved Tool and APC so much, it saddens me that he'll never get to hear this great song and amazing album :(
The song's music was originally written by guitarist Billy Howerdel, and intended for his solo project, Ashes Divide. However, he often presents music intended for Ashes Divide to band frontman Maynard James Keenan to see if he has interest in writing lyrics and vocal harmonies for songs to become A Perfect Circle material instead; Keenan chose to use the song because he felt that "People are going to hate me for this one, so let’s do that."
This video reminds me of my time in the Navy. We used to often observe dolphins swim in front of the ship like this. It always appeared that they were having fun racing with the ship.
I have such mixed feelings about this song, it makes me so happy and also it makes me feel extremely sad. So bittersweet, I madly LOVE it!!! APC keeps on rockin' my whole life 💖

But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man-for precisely the same reasons.”
Love the Hitchhikers reference, the feeling of this being a continuation of Ænema (my favorite Tool song), Maynard's dry sarcastic tone, those perfect sexy harmonies, everything about this song and the whole album. This song has aged hauntingly as I lost my friend Leia to suicide. The line about Willy Wonka, Major Tom, Ali and Leia has a new, more personal meaning.
I'm glad that this song and album mean a lot to you. Hopefully, whenever you hear this song, you are reminded of all the happiness you and your friend experience with each other.
Damn this song is so different but so good that is what makes apc amazing. They can make a song out of their comfort zone and make it one of their best.
I'll be honest, I clicked this expecting a cover of the dolphins singing in the movie, and while I'm slightly disappointed that it wasn't that, this song is amazing and more than makes up for not being what I thought it was
Same. Hadn't heard APC in a while. Having now heard the rest of the album, this is a real standout track. It's got a similar feel to MGMT's Time to Pretend.
I can't believe that i didn't know that it was APC doing this song. We watched the DVD (huge Adams fans) and the music video was on the "extras". Mind blown.
I am STRESSING THE FUCK OUT because this song was recommended to me by a friend months ago, and I just found the little slip of paper it was written on so I am listening to it for the first time now. A really great sadistic commentary on the ability of mankind to unwittingly and simultaneously destroy and entertain ourselves to a great fault. We will wipe ourselves out and be smiling the entire time because we’ll never see it coming. At the same time we know and we wish for it Haha was stoned and really felt the song when I first heard it. I feel like it highlights our species residing on the bleeding edge of our existence. Having discovered a weapon like a gun that could go off in our faces blowing mind and body away at any time while we sit with our fancy water and plastic smiles shouting hip hip hooray! what a radiant crescendo!! Douglas Adams is truly on a whole other level. Read his bit about the restaurant at the end of the universe. There is a chef there who has worked his entire life on a single sandwich. His life's work as he refers to it passionately. Doesn't surprise me for ONE second that Maynard is a Douglas Adams fan lol
Fucking love this. I love how Maynard can pack so much into what seems like a well meaning melodic song. Is it satirical? Is it referential? Is it in prediction of the apocalypse? Maybe all of those things? I don’t know but fuck if I’m not going to enjoy it. Not all songs need to be trippy whirlwind experiences guys...Lennon and McCartney proved that a long time ago.
This is brilliance, it's all tongue in cheek from the lyrics to music , Maynard and Billy at their artistic best in my opinion! The dark undertone and jagged guitar is where the real song lies! The album is going to be a monster!!
This song is blissful. There's no other word. . . Blissful. I can't wait for the new album. I feel like we're getting a cross between A Perfect Circle and Ashes Divide on this album with each new song I hear. I'm loving this so much. :)
This has been stuck in my head for days. The lyrics are so sarcastic. "Hip hip hooray. For this fireworks display. Mind and body blown away. What a radiant crescendo." If you are listening to it in 2021 you have an IQ above 80.
Howerdel's best guitar work on the album. Nicely woven into and between Keenan's vocals. Needed a little bit more of that dynamic elsewhere I thought. When the album does show a pulse, often in subtle unexpected moments, it's pretty fine)))
I heard this song on new years eve last year and ever since It has been stuck inside my head. And every time I hear it just reminds me of the good time I had that night and get chills .
Alvaro Cheherlian I completely don’t feel that same way but your comment is one of the few that is just positive. Instead of “if you don’t like this listen to nickelback.”
Seems like a lot of people always cloud their own personal opinions about a band's new album by letting nostalgia get in the way. There's way too many people criticizing stuff through comparison instead of looking at something as its own thing. Personally, when a band I like that I consider to have a lot of talent comes out with a new album, I'm hoping its going to sound different from their previous stuff. I don't want talent to be wasted on the same sound over and over, I wanna know what else they can do.
Zylph sure, but some of this album could have been edited or tweaked a little more to give it extra punch. There are some slower moments when you could be forgiven for thinking the tape has broken mid song. Maynard's vocals dominate the album, whereas guitars and drums generally take a back seat. The style of Puscifer can't be denied, and it is about on a par with Conditions for my Parole. The final track, Get the Lead Out, is a sleeper, especially with Keenan's knack for arching vocal melodies in that grey echo style of his.
I mean... get the lead out is my favorite track of this album. Sometimes in music, you get to a point where you can't really objectively say if something is good or bad. If you get into it and really start feeling the flow of a song, then for you its perfect, nothing needs to be changed. If you cant get into that vibe, then the song isint for you and that's ok. It's just a question of personal taste.
this is an awesome album worth the wait for music that is groundbreaking...Maynard never fails to deliver, when he is ready....you cant rush perfection people. thanks Perfect Circle.
When you get into the lyrics of the song you realize how genious it is. Its extremely cynical and dark and actually blends well with the pop sound and reinforces the message with sarcasm. Hes celebrating joyous hearts mind and body getting blown away in a nuclear end.
Exactly. It works so well... Just a bunch of plastic happy faces, glamorous and beautiful, as we are blown away, cheering how amazing we are as the flames and winds come to take us. Amazing song... in sound and spirit.
It took me a while to comprehend this song, when I did whoa, it all made sense. The entire song, melody, harmony, lyrics are an allegory to how society mask the nuclear warfare dangers and tensions with joyous capitalistic consumerism. I, didn't understand the first time I listened to, so it sure sounded weird, the 2nd time I captured better the melody and got interested in interpreting the lyrics, then I saw the blatant nuclear bombing references through the entire text, then I perceived that this song is beyond perfect.
Jon Benoit Thank you for not complaining like everyone else and taking the time to recognize what they are doing. I think its brilliant and the pop sound adds to the lyrics and someone makes it darker but i can get if someone doesnt care for the style
I love how so much of Maynard's vision bleeds through tool, apc and puscifer.
I love watching the dolphins swimming. They are so beautiful.
It's pretty unsettling how much this song is an anthem for the end of a generation of people. I'd like to nominate this as humanity's swan song. It's hauntingly beautiful.
Best comment ever, it fits so perfectly.

It is humanity's swam song.
I was thinking the same thing. The dolphins will long outlive us. As they should and the Earth can get back to healing itself again.

That upbeat intro is deceiving; what a powerfully mournful song.

I feel like Maynard is one of the inspirations for Rick Sanchez(R and Morty)... or at least could be with what you just shared, haha
Its a tone Maynards not foreign to tho. There are a few Puscifer songs that have a very similar tone.

So sad that it should come to this
very moving and worth the wait most of all. maynards writing has become much more bold, i like it.

Same here!!! I’m stuck in a paradox of time with this playing on an eternal loop....

Bravissimo, hip hip hooray
marcelo Pupo I went the opposite way.
Not a fan of the music but I do like the lyrics and appreciate what they are doing even though it isn't particularly my style.
Jon Benoit Thank you for not complaining like everyone else and taking the time to recognize what they are doing. I think its brilliant and the pop sound adds to the lyrics and someone makes it darker but i can get if someone doesnt care for the style
I'm a black/death/thrash metal kinda guy but I can appreciate other genres and styles of art even if I don't particularly listen to them personally.
Always carry a towel!

I never expected Maynard to ever say "Willy Wonka" in one of his songs
C'mon, he's Maynard.
You can thank Gene Wilder, for moving on.
or "hip hip hooray"
Such a dark personage is not out of place in Maynards lyrics.
MJK actually quoted Wonka in a recent concert, which was really cool. "We are the music-makers and we are the dreamers of dreams."
Day one -1 listen
Day two -3 listens
Day five - 8 listens
Day thirteen - 21 listens.........

One of the best songs ever recorded for many reasons! Awesome
Sounds 30% like APC 40% 30 seconds to Mars, and 30% straight up pop.
Steve T when I saw them live they warned fans that it would be like 80s pop.... Like Depeche Mode. Haha so I was like... Bring it.
