Nena: "99 Luftballoons is the most cheerful song about nuclear annihilation ever written."
A Perfect Circle: Hold our towels.
"The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-backwards-somersault through a hoop whilst whistling the ‘Star Spangled Banner’, but in fact the message was this: So long and thanks for all the fish." - Douglas Adams
I have a million ideas. All of them point to a horrible death.
on facing certain death, the guide says this;
"what to do when faced with certain death: consider that life has been good to you. alternatively, if this is not the case, more likely considering your situation, consider that it won't be bothering you much longer"
"In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
This comment section just makes me so happy.
I know, right?? Let's upvote it as much as we can!
It's pretty unsettling how much this song is an anthem for the end of a generation of people. Considering everything is linked to the 50's through the 80's, during the birth of the "Time is money" mindset, the cold war, the music video being set in a 50's period, plastic surgery becoming a thing during their generation...it kinda all works.
Welcome to Art.
“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much-the wheel, New York, wars and so on-whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man-for precisely the same reasons.”
On porpoise!!

Writer is Douglas Adams.
I give this song a 42 out of 7.
ROFL! thank 4 that 1! oh sorry 42^^
I rate it a 46 out of 2
Saw (heard) this song performed in Knoxville. The people in my row were looking at each other like, "What the F is this crap".
And the end, about 6 people cheered.
Space cadet ;^)
@@blutaffi6213 I was gonna say that :(
I'd like to nominate this as humanity's swan song. It's hauntingly beautiful.
Best comment ever, it fits so perfectly.
@@erica9238 agreed
It is humanity's swam song.
I was thinking the same thing. The dolphins will long outlive us. As they should and the Earth can get back to healing itself again.
@@michaelmoore1386 name checks out.
More than 2000 Vogons disliked this song .... but we know what they think is good poetry ... ^^
I found someone whose poetry was even worse than Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings'.
That's so fucking funny best comment
The Vogons are still processing paperwork to figure out if they like this song or not.
I listen to both, elaborate...
Maynard is a lyrical genius.
I feel like this is the song that would play once humans get wiped out by an asteroid and the credits start rolling.
Or Stal
We can but hope
Yup. Fish sandwiches are good😅
😂🤣😂🤣
🤘
I can wait 15 years for that.
The Answer is 42
Yes! Finally! The answer for the great question!
But the Vogons blew the planet away before we found The Question
Hip hip hooray
Warga, jak to możliwe, że zawsze jesteś tu szybciej ode mnie? :|
He’s got an towel!!! Runnn away
I get chills every time he says "Now Willy Wonka, Major Tom, Ali and Leia have moved on"
hell yeah...
that would be gene wilder, david bowie, muhummad ali, and carrie fisher.
Makes me tear up a bit...
I just get sad
I'll be moving on too.. will you still have chills for me?
I love how so much of Maynard's vision bleeds through tool, apc and puscifer.
I love watching the dolphins swimming. They are so beautiful.
That upbeat intro is deceiving; what a powerfully mournful song.
Liberating Reality
Mournful. (Weeping)
The juxtaposition of the tone and the despairing lyrics is pretty powerful, definitely intentional.
I love it. It's medicine. Gotta make it sweet to get people to take it.

APC song in a major key?! Wow
Robby Millsap I liked your song “Smokey Mountain Rain.” Cool meeting you, sir.
Sounds minor to me.
That’s what I said lmfao!!!
2 Negative The intro and verse are very much in a major key.
Maybe im not "openminded"...not my favorite song...
Amazing how such a dark song can sound so upbeat
Never heard The Cure or Grandaddy, huh
The only song I need in my life right now.
The song's music was originally written by guitarist Billy Howerdel, and intended for his solo project, Ashes Divide. However, he often presents music intended for Ashes Divide to band frontman Maynard James Keenan to see if he has interest in writing lyrics and vocal harmonies for songs to become A Perfect Circle material instead; Keenan chose to use the song because he felt that "People are going to hate me for this one, so let’s do that."
I feel like Maynard is one of the inspirations for Rick Sanchez(R and Morty)... or at least could be with what you just shared, haha
Its a tone Maynards not foreign to tho. There are a few Puscifer songs that have a very similar tone.
I hope this is true cause this song is amazing.

Andrew Giniewski To be fair you have to have a very high IQ to appreciate Rick & Morty...
the whole album is about something that is coming.. we are frogs in hot water and we dont even realize it.
Good god are you a prophet? Welcome to 2020
Are you? A God?
@@shedd45 ... nah, she just saw it on Reddit.... y'know, where all the frogs go... Reddit... reddit... reddit...... I'll get me coat! 🤪
Glass half empty view. It's about being thankful for this crazyness and just being here. It's about it being a load of nonsense, but who gives a fuck?
Love the Hitchhikers reference, the feeling of this being a continuation of Ænema (my favorite Tool song), Maynard's dry sarcastic tone, those perfect sexy harmonies, everything about this song and the whole album.
This song has aged hauntingly as I lost my friend Leia to suicide. The line about Willy Wonka, Major Tom, Ali and Leia has a new, more personal meaning.

My mom's name was Kris, but... ..same.
Sorry for your loss
I'm glad that this song and album mean a lot to you. Hopefully, whenever you hear this song, you are reminded of all the happiness you and your friend experience with each other.

Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and Maynard. The best combination.
When someone says Infinite War is the most ambitious crossover in history...
lmao you're actually proud that you made the reference everyone already knew
Yes it is! Right after the song I decided to watch the movie.
You would think so, all the things I love... and still... I am not thrilled...
Viktor Tunić I'm sorry dude what didn't you like about it?
I honestly think this song is refreshing. I'm actually glad they changed it up a little bit.
Steezy Shredz changed it up or changed it to Puscifer?
The Stormborn This song isn't really Pucifer. Maybe some of the other songs are heavily pucifer influenced... Even a couple songs seemed more Nine Inch Nails influenced, but art is about embracing creativity. Maybe if we embrace the new APC we will get hear a brand new Tapeworm album with Maynard James Kennan and Trent Reznor. How fucking epic would that be!?
Steezy Shredz This sounds VERY similar to Tiny Monsters by Puscifer I think.

Brilliant
The Anthem of 2020.
I'll be signing off Dec 31st 2020 11:59pm with the tagline _"So long and thanks for all the fish"_
I never expected Maynard to ever say "Willy Wonka" in one of his songs
C'mon, he's Maynard.
You can thank Gene Wilder, for moving on.
or "hip hip hooray"
Such a dark personage is not out of place in Maynards lyrics.
MJK actually quoted Wonka in a recent concert, which was really cool. "We are the music-makers and we are the dreamers of dreams."
Woah this was different!
Lie Likes Music I did not see it comimg from them lmfaooo
Agreed
Things got oddly happy sounding. Hahaha

Love your channel! I recommend people suscribe.
After about 15 years of fandom, I have just been able to see APC live for the first time. And this song was in setlist.
I am so happy I can't speak. Finally this day came!
I wish everyone has a great day too, I'm so full of happiness right now 💕
Sarpale666 oh god, me too! In June. It was amazing, I was SO speechless when he started to sing - his voice was beyond perfect, better than the studio version. And damn, I cried when they left the stage.
A few years back they were in utah on April 15, My birthday. I quit my job to be able to go to that concert.
So jelly my time will come
Seen them last Friday in Detroit. They played this and it makes you appreciate it that much more.
Caught them for the first time last winter, absolutley amazing
The intro sounds like those stock footage corporate soulless commercials until the lyrics kick in. So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish
Its a grower. And im into the super dark stuff.. it has a very sarcastic vibe to it. Very solid
Fine words...yes.
Maynard always liked to troll people.
And Now For Something Completely Different! 😎
Can anyone else not stop listening to this?
MrShortrohs yes me been on repeat all day been going threw a lot of shit and this put my soul to rest
I hope I don’t ever have to stop listening to it... I’ve fallen absolutely head over heels in love with a song.
I'll be honest, I clicked this expecting a cover of the dolphins singing in the movie, and while I'm slightly disappointed that it wasn't that, this song is amazing and more than makes up for not being what I thought it was
That's exactly what I expected (and hoped for) but this song is fantastic so I guess that makes up for it lol
Same. Hadn't heard APC in a while. Having now heard the rest of the album, this is a real standout track. It's got a similar feel to MGMT's Time to Pretend.
Perhaps. But a metal version of the dolphin's song would have been better.
"You may not share our intellect, which may explain your disprespect"
Maynard’s voice gives me such chills.
It's the autotune.
This has been stuck in my head for days. The lyrics are so sarcastic. "Hip hip hooray. For this fireworks display. Mind and body blown away. What a radiant crescendo."
If you are listening to it in 2021 you have an IQ above 80.
*slobbering on myself* I did it, ma!
Also if you like this, check out A Bad Think
Aw gee I feel so adequate. Thank you for confirming that I am barely a special or "r-word" person.
Thanks man but I have an IQ of 65. Nay nay bitches 'n' shit.
I don’t know if that’s high or not lol
A strangely upbeat song about extinction, I love it.

Apocalypse pop with a covert christian theme
right, because mixing dark themed lyrics with bright and cheery music hasn't been done before. /eyeroll
Amir Frost not talking about this song but the doomed is the best example. The contrarian is another. Some say its about trump but " warm and calculated as heroin"? Thats so not trump. Good description of satan tho. "Hello he lies". Father of all lies. And then of course theres talk talk about hippocritical christians. I could continue
This song feels to me almost unlike any APC song before it. And it’s great! Extremely catchy and upbeat, but with some dark undertones. Love Billy’s guitar riff and the orchestral touches.
Um... Some dark undertones??? This plays right into the Dissolution theme. The take away I get is that we are doing this all wrong, but we have brought something hook line and sinker. What is being sold and glamorized/celebrated as progress is in actuality regression. I'm waiting for the day JMK takes off the mask and is shown that hes actually Morpheus. The Matrix is gonna be pissed...
Its WAY different than anything Maynard has ever touched. It almost doesn't even sound like him. It's interesting, but I can't figure out if I like it or not. lol
idk, reminds me of A Nurse who Loved Me. at least, in sound.
yeah that's the closest equivalent I could think of. This one's still more upbeat but it's a complete tonal shift between Doomed and Talk Talk in a similar way Nurse is between Outsider and Pet.
Dark Undertones indeed, did anyone do a double take when he said "Mushroom cloud confetti"? Or was that just me?
Fave off album
May your apocalypse come with the cheeriness of this song....
Perfect Circle new songs: 1st listen: weird, 2nd: interesting, 3rd: amazing, 4th: gold :D
I swear i have listened to this song about 50 time...i love it!!!
Bravissimo, hip hip hooray
marcelo Pupo I went the opposite way.
It took me a while to comprehend this song, when I did whoa, it all made sense.
The entire song, melody, harmony, lyrics are an allegory to how society mask the nuclear warfare dangers and tensions with joyous capitalistic consumerism.
I, didn't understand the first time I listened to, so it sure sounded weird, the 2nd time I captured better the melody and got interested in interpreting the lyrics, then I saw the blatant nuclear bombing references through the entire text, then I perceived that this song is beyond perfect.
Sounds 30% like APC 40% 30 seconds to Mars, and 30% straight up pop.
Steve T when I saw them live they warned fans that it would be like 80s pop.... Like Depeche Mode. Haha so I was like... Bring it.
This song is life changing
I CAN'T GET THIS SONG OUTTA MY HEAD! congrats APC you have brainwashed my mind!
This video reminds me of my time in the Navy. We used to often observe dolphins swim in front of the ship like this. It always appeared that they were having fun racing with the ship.
People complaining about APC not being the same as before. Let me tell you somethining Let the artist do the hell they desire to do, you don't own them.
I'm loving this
Christian Marin exactly if they stay the same then they won't be happy themselves!
Right?? If they're complaining, they clearly aren't fans of what Maynard has put out there the last nearly 3 decades now. Literally every album, regardless of which band, has been different than the one preceding it. But every album has been genius on it's own merit. If you're gonna compare new releases to older ones & expect similar every time, you're gonna be disappointed. And shame on those who do just that.
good for you. have your opinion. ive been with maynard since the beginning and I'm not feeling it. hopefully the album is better
Hey Ben Vinar, I didn't realise Hooker With a Penis was about you.
and picasso never painted in the colors i liked = ( lol your free to pop in one of the old albums thats the beauty of recording
So long and thanks for all the fish
So sad that it should come to this
Ahh..its a good week..just heard Fear Innoculm annd found out APC put out a new album a year ago.
My brother died on 2-13-18. We've been to several apc and tool shows. It hurts to know he won't hear this.
I'm so sorry for that....perhaps he hears it somewhere better than here.
Traveling Man that is my belief. Thank you buddy.
My condolences bud. Music transcends all boundaries.. I'm sure he's listening and enjoys it just as much as you do..
Miguel Calderon
Thank you. I bought his 13 year old daughter a copy of the album. He's definitely jamming to it with her.
I went to a perfect circle concert with my brother last year. I'm sorry for your loss.

HAHAHAHAHA
😂
*Whaow*
Lol
still with the fucking WOW shit Jessie... What are you evan watching this circle stuff for Owen aint in it, didnt I introduce you to Mr Maynard in the first place$ remember that bitch I was with that had a Maynard tramp stamp good lord huh
This song makes me cry every time I hear it. I lost my brother last August and I can't help but to hear his name in the song along with all the celebrities we've lost. He loved Tool and APC so much, it saddens me that he'll never get to hear this great song and amazing album :(
Bittersweet yes there couldn't be a more fitting and truly divinely-inspired antonym for the epoch of mankind to conclude with a sad smile

Like the song 'Free Four' by Pink Floyd
I think that was the intent
The album is getting more fire with every listen. This song is actually major lowkey genius
Humans, what a radiant crescendo in existence.
This song went from my least favorite thing APC has ever to done, to my top 3 in about a week. It's like a pop summer ballad from 2002.
It's very New Order covering Incubus, for sure.
@@CraigKeidel _What?_

Maynard is a vocal master. Those melodies are glorious!
Best. Song. Ever.
I have such mixed feelings about this song, it makes me so happy and also it makes me feel extremely sad. So bittersweet, I madly LOVE it!!! APC keeps on rockin' my whole life 💖
Ok.. this is different.
"Not sure" about this..
Third time listening..
SINGING LOUDLY 🎶
Time is money, moneys time.. ♥️

Ahah same hereeeee
BRAVISSIMO. HIP HIP HOORAY! 🎶
Hip hip hooray for our iminent death by nuclear bombs. What a RADIANT crescendo. Such glorious display.
HIP HIP HOORAY!
It's delicious 😉
Fucking love this. I love how Maynard can pack so much into what seems like a well meaning melodic song. Is it satirical? Is it referential? Is it in prediction of the apocalypse? Maybe all of those things? I don’t know but fuck if I’m not going to enjoy it. Not all songs need to be trippy whirlwind experiences guys...Lennon and McCartney proved that a long time ago.
What about a Melodic Pasquinade by none other than “Maynard the Apocalypse Bard “ !!
Just gies to show that God iIS in every detail,.
This song is the happy go lucky second cousin of AENIMA.
Indeed. Very thematically similar
ISMFOFbitches oh my god it is holy shit
AEnima is when you first find out the world is ending and you are still pissed at everyone for making it happen.
This song is what happens when you accept that reality, become OK with your fate, and realize that all those people you were pissed at are about to die horribly...
... and it becomes fucking hilarious.
@@moo8731 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
While ænima says fuck you to a ton of people, this song says goodbye to the poor souls who have left us.
Gotta love the reference to the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy; thx for all the fish! 🐬
This is actually a really nice song
It is.
It's about consumerism and nuclear warfare, it's about how the world is at war whilst the common folk is celebrating as if nothing was happening, that's why the melody and harmony sounds so joyous yet so sad. This song is an overachieving masterpiece.
"MELT our joyous hearts away under the MUSHROOM CLOUD confetti", astoundingly brilliant line.
Seems like a lot of people always cloud their own personal opinions about a band's new album by letting nostalgia get in the way. There's way too many people criticizing stuff through comparison instead of looking at something as its own thing. Personally, when a band I like that I consider to have a lot of talent comes out with a new album, I'm hoping its going to sound different from their previous stuff. I don't want talent to be wasted on the same sound over and over, I wanna know what else they can do.
SO well put !!
Zylph sure, but some of this album could have been edited or tweaked a little more to give it extra punch. There are some slower moments when you could be forgiven for thinking the tape has broken mid song. Maynard's vocals dominate the album, whereas guitars and drums generally take a back seat. The style of Puscifer can't be denied, and it is about on a par with Conditions for my Parole. The final track, Get the Lead Out, is a sleeper, especially with Keenan's knack for arching vocal melodies in that grey echo style of his.
I mean... get the lead out is my favorite track of this album. Sometimes in music, you get to a point where you can't really objectively say if something is good or bad. If you get into it and really start feeling the flow of a song, then for you its perfect, nothing needs to be changed. If you cant get into that vibe, then the song isint for you and that's ok. It's just a question of personal taste.
So you don't appreciate reggae ? =D
Thats because you're an individual. The others who basically just want Tool with a different name, are just part of a crowd. No individual thoughts.
This song will not stop rattling around in my brain and I love it.
DON'T PANIC! The answer to life, the universe and everything is 42. Never forget your towel.

When Maynard says Major Tom, is he referring to David Bowie?
Justin Barber most likely
Justin Barber He definitely is!
Willy Wonka - Gene Wilder
Major Tom - David Bowie
Leia - Carrie Fisher
Ali - Muhammad Ali
As song clearly referencing the poor souls we lost in 2016... Beautiful

Happy to help :D
Vince Painter lololol. Hilarious
And Muhammad ali also prince
Vince Painter Maybe replace Fisher with Prince. He contributed more to society.
Hip hip hurray 🤣❤️
I am STRESSING THE FUCK OUT because this song was recommended to me by a friend months ago, and I just found the little slip of paper it was written on so I am listening to it for the first time now. All that is to say, I desperately want to thank the person but my stupid ass procrastinated so long that I DON'T REMEMBER WHO IT WAS AND NOW THEY MAY NEVER KNOW THAT THEY CHANGED MY LIFE FOR THE BETTER.
When you get into the lyrics of the song you realize how genious it is. Its extremely cynical and dark and actually blends well with the pop sound and reinforces the message with sarcasm. Hes celebrating joyous hearts mind and body getting blown away in a nuclear end.
.... this guy gets it
Read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The whole thing is a comedic satire about the end of the world. He does the title justice.
If you can't enjoy The End, what's the point?
Exactly. It works so well... Just a bunch of plastic happy faces, glamorous and beautiful, as we are blown away, cheering how amazing we are as the flames and winds come to take us. Amazing song... in sound and spirit.
It's called musical irony. Coheed and Cambria are great at it.
This song is melodic and haunting just like the rest of the Eat The Elephant album. Job well done, MJK and A Perfect Circle.
This song has been in my head for weeks now and I have no problem with that at all.

The vocal tracks are amazing on this song.
This song has such a dark meaning that not alot of people know about
Except literally every commenter on this song
For the last time: musicians don't *owe* their fans anything. Artists don't create art for audiences, they create it for themselves. If you like it, you can buy it. If you want to see them perform, you can pay for the privilege. If you don't like their art, save your money. No one is forcing you to patronize them.
Bravissimo, hip hip hooray
Hands down - the best comment.
How dare an artist do something different to what they've done before!
XD
James Amaral you're right. Keep your negativity to yourself everyone. Hate has no place to be placed but burnt to ashes and left behind.
People are totally within their rights to say they don't like something. But acting like they're owed something is ridiculous.
Holy shit APC wrote something in a major key
I really like hearing his voice in tender songs. It still has a dark aggressiveness to it, and it keeps those tender songs grounded in real emotion
I had no idea Maynard was a Douglas Adams fan. In the long dark tea time of the soul, this song will keep me warm.
The fact this band only has 113k subs is a sin. Thank you APC for being there for me.

Derwelle Umbao I think maybe Melanin Monroe after he says hair and skin, play on words perhaps
Maybe only the first time the second time does sound like marylin Monroe
It's a reference to "Insignificance", a 1985 film by Nicolas Roeg. Marilyn Monroe talking to Einstein about the end of the world in a nuclear holocaust. A profoundly moving piece of cinema.
Yea the lyrics are definitely the best thing about eat the elephant unfortunately
