I think it's hard for an american to understand how much French culture there is in this movie. A lot of time you seemed shocked by the dialogues but there is no flaming or moking him. He's just being himself; a street guy talking to a rich man.
it's just humour, no bad intentions, I think Philippe being intelligent guy really appreciated Driss's attitude, he didn't treat him like an egg but like a full-fledged person. I love this movie, great story and ESPECIALLY no cringe dialogues.
What culture lmao?

French movies are great. I love the movies where Louis De-Funes and Christian Clavier played the most.
В россии этот фильм очень популярен, что-то вроде современной классики
@@batmoon5675 yeahh
@@batmoon5675 Watch Leo's Carax movies :D
there is a thing i like : the joke "pas de bras pas de chocolat" has a realy good translation as "no handy no candy" (je suis Français)
A huge hit in Europe, this one. And deservedly so.
Saw a few interviews with the real life Philippe. A great guy. He died last week, aged 72. Rest in peace.
Foreign Film Friday might be a good idea. There's more than just Hollywood.
He lived the rest of his life in Morocco, right?
The man (Philippe Pozzo di Borgo) unfortunately passed away yesterday. May he rest in peace.
I adore this movie and I loved your reaction !
Oh fok
Oh my god rest in peace Philippe
As usual for American remakes of French films (with exception of a very small handful,) the remake messes up just about everything that's good about this film.
Agreed!
Agreed
That's the understatement of of the year.
Couldn't even finish watching the American version.
@@Rngd805. Me neither.
The subtitles truly don't do the humor of the film justice! Still amazing though, loved your reaction :)
One of the best movies I've ever watched! Isn't this the best example that there's more than Hollywood? We can make good movies, too, us Europeans, right? I think so. Merci beaucoup pour ce chef-d'oeuvre, la France! Very kind regards from Germany.
Historically I would even go so far as to say that the only reason why Hollywood became the worlds foremost moving pictures entertainment industry is the 3rd Reich. Because all the good german artists and film-makers fled the Nazis and went to L.A.
Without the 3rd Reich, UFA in Berlin would now probably be the place where the center of the film industry would reside.
\De rien.
Cinema was invented in France after all :)
Just saw the danish movie "Drunk" and it was great ! Great movies from Germany too, Das Leben der Anderen or goodbye Lenin were great as well
I took care of my disabled grandfather for years, so this movie and their real live stories mean so much to me. It's one of my favorit movies of all time and greatly underappreciated. More people should watch this ! Thank you for this awesome reaction :)
Well maybe for other countries but in France it’s a huge classic I mean really
This movie is a true hidden gem.
Not so hidden it was a big hit in europe😭and the top movie in france, the joke "pas de bras, pas de chocolat" ("no handy, no candy") is still an iconic line we use 12 years after (a little less than when it was out but it's like a big reference now)
Pas de bras pas de cholocat is an old joke, way before the movie, they just use it in the movie and that's the part of the joke.@@imnotenglish9838
imagine u made a perfect movie..and after some years hollywood is comin " oh no, we can do it better"...the original is one of best movies i have ever seen
I'm a French speaking person but i read the subtiltle 😂
This movie is a real masterpiece.
Ahaha moi aussi
I’m surprised you’ve tackled this and impressed in your attention to the clash, like fingernails on a blackboard, of cultures. Once getting past the initial confusion, the subject of this film is unique, but wears the badge of honour about people becoming a part of new families. As you experienced, the blood flows faster and the warmth of the story increases to the very end. Consider Amélie (2001, French) and Chocolat (2000, not French but set in France). Pick a cold night and let these gems warm your heart. As with all recommendations, check these with a trusted friend.
Yep as a french guy i was about to recommend Amélie haha
RIP Philippe Pozzo di Borgo (14 février 1951 - 1 juin 2023), he inspired the character of Philippe played by François Cluzet in the film
I think this film is surely one of those that will put it in the list of the best French films of all time.
And about the controversial discussion... there is no discussion, there is no controversy but only americans on need to understand the second degree and something else than their own story (yup ! there is a world outside your borders). Nice reaction :)
"Bittersweet" suits this movie perfectly. The 2 main characters are so raw. One deflecting with cynicism and the other with humor and somehow by interacting they reach a middle ground, some balance.💙
37:26 When he says "Bye guys" to Magalie and Frederique, it's more like "Bye dudes", to tease them :)
"benefit" is like some sort of foodstamp (521€) the french government gives you if your are unemployed and looking for a job, if you don't prove you've been actively trying to work you don't get any.
A great movie choice ! Of course, sadly the subtitles doesn't translate as best the dialogue's intentions (they deleted the 'bad words', expressions, the 'vouvoiement' like the spanish usted, which is used instead of a simple tu, references, etc etc). But it's really a nice-easy-to-watch movie.
You probably have a long to-watch list, but if one-day you want to see another French movie, here's a few list of cool ones :
Thriller : "Grave" (2016)
Excellent animated movie about one's youth in Iran : "Persepolis"(2007)
Indie movie street life in 90s France : "La Haine" (1995)
Absurd movie : "Mandibles" (2020, any movie by Quentin Dupieux is awesome and quirky)
Classic old school buddy movie : "La Grande Vadrouille" (1966)
All nice movies for each of their styles !
The original Driss is a Algerian man named Abdel. He stayed close friends with Philippe who married an Moroccan woman and lived in Morocco for the rest of his life. He just passed in June 2023.
i was a projectionist when this came out in europe. it screened for 9+ months, the longest of any film i've known. in european terms a major hit. it bombed heavily in the US tho, even the american remake
I'd be curious to see the success of non american/english movies actually do well in the US.
Fun fact : Idriss's painting is actually made by is son (omar sy's son) ✌🏻
I love so many things about this movie. The actor who plays Driss, Omas Sy, also played in ''Demain tout commence'' and stars in the Netflix series ''Lupin'' which are both awesome. There are so many excellent french movies. Look into it.
Merci 😊
He was also in the first Jurassic World movie, which was one of two highlights for me. Didn’t know he was in it, either, so I got a very nice surprise in the theater.

QUICK JUMP CUT to Nia Maki in the air paragliding.
This is one of my favorite French movies ever! Used to watch it a lot with my family when I was younger.
Not many people where I'm from know this movie exists and I for sure did not expect any channel to react to it! It's a pleasant surprise.
it's probably one of the best movie i ever see
it's funny yes but what i love there it's they both help each other ... both save their live
So great someone from the States reacted to this awesome European movie!! Actually, there are far to few reactions to this movie, so thank you very much! I hope others will follow your example.
By the way: I have to mention the beautiful music by Einaudi in this movie.
Thanks Beyoncé 😉 and warm regards from the Netherlands !!
For the thing you didn't got at 4:16, in france people who don't have a job still get money BUT you must prove you are searching for a new job. That's why he came, he wanted a signature to prove he wanted that job but didn't care at all, he only wanted the financial help
I loved how shocked you were every time Driss opened his mouth 😂
I remember watching this during my French studies. What a wonderful film.
I'm so glad I've found this video and your account : I've never seen anyone react to French movies before and this was really great to see you discover this amazing movie ! I just saw that you also reacted to Amélie, so I'm gonna watch this one asap too ! Thank you so much for the French people watching those kind of videos for having decided to try out French movies 🥰
They needed each other ... the one needed a friend, the other needed a guide
This is my mum‘s and my favorite movie, just such a wonderful story ❤️ glad you liked it!
I love this film, so I'm thrilled to see someone react to it. Spread the love!
Glad to see someone reviewing a non-anime, non-English language movie.
For more French language films try Amelie, Jean de Florette, Monsieur Hire, The Hairdressers Husband. Or if you want a brilliant and criminally underrated action flick, Le Pacte des Loups.
Trois Hommes et un Couffin, Taxi and Le Cage aux Folles all had English language remakes and they could be good to compare...
I remember when it came out in Italy.. and all were talking about it in a positive way like at the time was a 10/10 film .
At first i was sceptical about it.. i wasn't a big fan of EU films, but at the end iv watch it and damn 10/10
I just noticed how they changed the names of some famous people that were mentioned in the movie, like comparing that white guy with George Bush instead Raffarin. They tried to adapt the names, to famous people American people would know.
this is a masterpiece... this movie was the reason i fell in love with classical (instrumental) music. still to this day i listen to soundtracks in this movie.. ''Una Mattina'' song is my favorite.. imo music tracks in the movie elevates the emotions to a whole another level.
Great movie and great reaction. Thanks for a good cut also, 'cause those types of movie are hard to keep on youtube with good portions of reaction.
I can't believe I didn't know Ludovico Einaudi before this movie. The piano help immensely set the tone and gravity of the topic and matches well with the top layer of humour and gags.
I love this movie. The story is so weird, but cool. The whole thing is based on a true story.
It was very heart warming ❤️
I'm french! This movie is sooo good. Loved your reaction :)
I'm so glad ur watching this. I haven't seen anyone watch this. It's such a beautiful movie. ❤
Glad you watched the original instead of the hollywood remake which is pretty sub-par. But that's usually the way.
You should see Amélie. It's my favourite movie and one of the greatest french films of all time time.
It's a unique film and I think you'll like it.
Yes! I was supposed to upload it last week and just been behind, hopefully I’ll upload some time next week
thank you for reacting to the real movie and not the american remake......they messed with perfection! this movie is perfect.....
I love how you react, you keep it about the content and not the reaction as intended, thank you ! :)
Excellent video, thanks from France 🙏
And great movie.
LOVE YOUR REACTIONS!
I am glad you watched this movie ,I am a French myself ,its a great movie😊
Thanks you for your video. I'm french and it's the first time that I see someone watching a french movie. I've also Seen your video on Amélie Poulain. Two great movies.
I loved them both! Very different but heart warming movies!
Great reaction! I subscribed and I'm gonna watch your other stuff now ;)
Another great French movie: Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis. It's absolutely hilarious. I'm not French, but that's my fav mainland European movie. For the UK I really recommend the "Cornetto trilogy": Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and The worlds end. I would start with Hot Fuzz :)
thank you Nia Maki , with the time the intricate power hidden in this film, on what is really important in life.
a feel good movie for sure, and lot more
thank you
Loved the movie, such a wholesome friendship between them!
I got emotional watching you get emotional !! I'm subscribing 😊
Thank you for subscribing!! It was an amazing movie!
I love this movie. I've watched this at least ten times. Greetings from Finland.
I watched this on Netflix some years ago. It’s a great foreign flick ✌️🔥
I don't know why this is the 5th time i'm watching your reaction in 4 weeks.
And +15th time i see the movie.
I really like it
This movie has brought tears to my eyes and still does. Based off a true story. Really good pick.
I am really enjyoing your reaction - and I LOVE that youre watching in French with subtitles!
I'm a big fan of doing that myself. My absolute favourite movies are Luc Besson's (he did 5th element as well) "Taxi" movies (called "Taxi" and "TaxiTaxi" - "Taxi 3" is an aquired taste ^^). I know them by heart and watch them in french as well even though I dont speak it, really.
If you like french comedy, those Taxi movies absolutely are for you. They have Marion Cotillard in them as well, if you like her :)
MASSIVE recommendation from me!
I remember the first I wanted to watch it I was skeptical given that it's not American but turned out to be one the greatest movies I've ever seen.
omg was a French Girl i'm so happy to see someone react to it
I’m french and happy for this react! 😃
Loved your reaction
Unfortunatly the real Philip (Philippe Pozzo di Borgo) died 2 weeks ago. RIP.
Being french I love to see foreigner reactions on french movies and I understand for you sometimes you get confused
This is why when I watch american movies or series even if I don't get it the reference, the joke or even the culture I try to keep my mind open even if sometimes it's difficult for me
I didn't know the version with Kevin Hart was a remake! I loved it because of how I relate on a personal level to some of it. I will definitely watch this version now
Love this movie! So glad you got to experience it. There is a Kevin Hart remake, but pails in comparison.
The upside was horrible, i don't understand why they can't dub the original for the people who hates subtitles.
If you’re a ready for a totally mind altering, world shifting, chaos reigning movie, please watch Incendies. It’s an amazing story based on real historic events in Lebanon and won multiple international awards but it’s an actually devastating movie. You won’t cry but you’ll definitely have your core shaken.
I'm glad someone is mentioning this movie ! I was indeed "shaken" after I finished it, that's really the word. It haunted me for weeks after that. I watched it several times again throughout the years. It's always a powerful moment. I would say "Incendies" is one of my favorite movies. It feels sort of weird to say "favorite" with the subjects this movie tackles and its tone, all of it being serious, deep, dark, tragic etc, but it's just an excellent movie. It's definitely among the movies that left the most memorable impression on me. I can't forget the story and what it deals with because the acting was top notch, the story was very well written (and the music/bgm is as excellent as the rest). It's one of these rare movies for which I can't find any flaws. Sadly too few people talk about it or even know about it. It deserves to be known and talked about.
Omar Sy is really good in Netflix's Lupin series too
fun fact Abdel Sellou is an Algerian born in Algiers.
The paragliding flight was directed towards my home in Savoie France
Really love this movie!
Me too!!! All the feels in the end!
the music in the movie is outstanding, the piano songs are by Ludovico einaudi.
There is no puritanism in France, thankfully. So, sex jokes, being direct with women, cannabis, and Hitler jokes are just fine. Plus, since adds for lawyers are illegal, nobody ever consider filling lawsuits for any such thing. I don't know anyone who ever filled a lawsuit for anything. This actually allows more freedom in speech, especially in media like cinema. This freedom is threatened these days, though.
The sentence "no hands, no chocolat" is pretty used and well know now 😂
This movie as be really, really liked in France ❤ It's talk to the heart and soul of many people, and the poor like the wealthy.
And it's... Real. I mean it's not useless drama, or forceful twist. There are something true, as much as the way the actor play it. As the story is build.
It's often crude, or even crass. But it's not cruel or malicious. It's only joking and dare to said the things. Some will find it's hurting ? Yet in reality it's saying "your human, your a guy, I respect you. You are not some brittle thing I have to take care."
It's respect...
Even if yes, I understand many will have a hard time to see it and understand it for what it is 🤔
It is absolutely necessary to watch the filmography of the directors (Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano)
The Specials, C'est la vie!
I have to admit that my most of my favourite movies are french. ❤ and this is one of them. I watch it at least once a month
Philippe Pozzo Di Borgo died in june, at 72.
So sad . R.I.P
The earth, wind and fire dance was the best scene
So glad you did this movie, especially the French version which is my favorite, i just love this movie:)
it was an amazing movie!
The French version is the original version
11:12 Me, a Frenchman, lighting a cig as you said this. Yup, you got a point lmao.
the greatest French sentimental film
He wasn't the friend he needed...he was the friend he deserved 🥺
So the friend he needed
@anriettecooper6935 it was a dark knight reference but if you want to get pedantic about it we can: he didn't need anything he was super rich and had all the things he'd ever want in the world. However as we see a lot in movies the rich have empty lives and live them as such. When he was hiring he was looking for more than a helper he wanted to find someone more. And in the end he showed how much he not only wanted him...but deserved a BFF such as him
@@danterengiil4448
He didn’t need anything because he was super rich ? He had all the things he would ever want in the world ?Lol what the f*ck are you saying.
He didn’t have his wife anymore , his didn’t have his body anymore and didn’t have a friend like Driss, but wanted a friend like Driss.
So he didn’t have all the things he wanted.
Money can’t buy everything
I love The Upside, the remake of this movie…unpopular opinion, apparently…but the original, man…I LOVE the original! Omar Sy is amazing.
And I appreciate your video this movie made. Is really good
I love this movie so much

but it was translated with "you're right"
