This film sequence was broadcast on television in my country back in the 80s, my father managed to capture it with his video cassette recorder, till one day I digitized it and uploaded it to You Tube, I really don´t know who has the entire original movie or what could happened with that original movie, there are some people ( who like to steal) who copied the video and uploaded it on facebook´s car pages !!!
52 years later, another race on the same track. So many legends here, Hill, Cevert, Pescarolo. Great footage!

L'époque des pionniers... les mécaniques paraissaient tellement simples.
The first Le Mans I followed on danish TV, 8 years old and a huge racing fan already, thanks in part to Mark Breton/Michel Vaillant.
Oh the grief when I learned in the morning that Jo Bonniers galant fight against the overwhelming Matra contingent had ended so tragically....still I was also happy for Hills win, the sound of the Matras so chillingly beautiful.

What an iconic association Matra-Simca... and the names of Pescarolo, Hill, Cevert, Jabouille... words of my childhood. Superb film and truly great score, they really capture the time. Time, the greatest of all enigmas. We only possess what we have lost.
Une épopée , des chevaliers hardis, passionnés et joyeux . Quelle époque avons nous vécu à rencontrer des héros aussi humains que le grand "Pesca" ! Pas besoin de faire la comparaison avec le mode de vie que l' on voudrait nous imposer. Eux étaient libres et heureux.

La Matra 670 longue queue, c'était ma préférée. Et en plus François Cevert au volant. Le début de ma passion pour la course...

Savez vous que la course en 72 s est décidée deux fois.
La première lorsque surpris en pneus slicks par une averse François avait prudemment lève le pied dans les hunaudieres et que Marie Claude Beaumont au volant de la grosse chevrolet Corvette de titi Greder
Sans visibilité avait heurte l arrière gauche de la matra 670 au ralenti.
Capot et surtout suspension endommagée la numéro 14 avait perdu du temps au stand ⁶et ensuite les consignes de courses avaient joué pour éviter un duel fratricide.
Mais ce n était pas le dernier coup du sort car le démontage du moteur de la numéro 15 a révélé une culasse fissurée.
S il avait fallu forcer la 670 01 ne serait pas allée au bout !! Donc les consignes de course ont permis le double.
A noter que celle ci n était pas dotée du moteur dernière génération qui equipait les 670 02 et la 670 03. La quatrième Matra celle de Jabouille était le châssis 660 03
Des 3 x 670 il n y avait que la voiture victorieuse au musée Matra et elle été vendue récemment..
La 660 03 qui ne courut que cette course par contre s y trouve toujours
Graham Hill était un pilote extraordinaire, d'une classe exceptionnelle!

Those guys were so brave, goinf 300kph in mulsanne on the wet, in the dark, on those aluminium cars (admitedly they didint know anything better) so awesome, so damn dangerous, so good. RIP Joseph Bonnier and Francois Cevert.

Dear Nano, I'm watching this at 5.30am in Oxford UK 3/9/21 and I've just turned 60. This is so so special. The awful death of Jo Bonnier, and the subsequent death of others, Graham, Francois etc. What a mix of emotions. As a Le Mans obsessive I am so thrilled and excited, and sad and on the verge of tears for time passing, and loss. Does this make any sense? Thank you so much for posting.

Document exceptionnel , on l'ont voit Sylvain Floirat qui suit le ravitaillement de près , moi je me contente d'ouvrir et de refermer le capot .Et , que voit t'on aujourd'hui , un connard qui vend une de ces autos .Les Matraciens , nous sommes tous boulversés.

C'est vrai mes d'un autre coté c'est se qui faisait le charme de l'époque.
I loved the Matra 670 , after the LeMans victory , I just had to see them , the following year my dad and me went to Watkins Glen to see them rare the Ferrari 312s Pescarola and Laurousse won , Cevert has electrical issue . His race later that year in F1 Tyrell was tragic .

Another thing:This would be the first of four wins for Henri.This was a great day for him.He was in a bad crash in 1969.

Boy this team takes me back. I don't know if Porsche withdrew from LeMans after 1971, but it seemed that Matra Simca dominated this race in 72, 73 and finally in 1974, when it not only won this race but dominated in what was then the world championship of makes. Ironically in 1975, when Porsche started becoming strong, Matra Simca withdrew from sportscar racing. Only Renault in 1978 and later Peugeot were the only other French teams to win their home race.
Rondeau won in 1980 it was a cosworth powered car

Il a été diffusé à la télévision argentine au milieu des années 80, je pouvais l'enregistrer avec un lecteur de vidéocassette VHS et la cassette a été conservée pendant des années jusqu'au jour où je l'ai numérisée et téléchargée sur UA-cam, je ne sais pas qui a le film entier ou ce qui aurait pu être est arrivé avec ce tournage de l'année 1972. Certaines personnes et pages se référant aux voitures ont copié cette vidéo et l'ont téléchargée sur facebook !! C'est l'original !!!

No. Steve McQueen's footage was from 1970. I was lucky enough to meet and talk with Steve in the Matra hospitality above the pits on the Saturday night with my dad. I was 12 at the time.

Seeing the 2 Matra's cross the line together gave me chills. Loved watching this. Real racing and real loud raw engines. They dont make em like this anymore :(

J ai connus. Notre famille était sous traitant en mecanique generale de Matra et à cette occasion ,,mon père et surtout moi du haut de mes 18 ans sommes intervenus sur le boîtier de changement de vitesse de la voiture de Pescarolo qui avait tendance à ce rompre.finesse dans l usinage et poli miroir avec papier poncé a s user les doigts,t avoir le droit de s assoir dans celle de Graham hill . J ai 68 ans et j ai toujours le frisson dans ma colonne vertébrale lorsque les mécanos dans la pièce d à côté faisaient rugir ce fameux moteur simca Matra alors que nous venions de livrer la pièce en 2cv. Merci à monsieur Lagardère qui suite à cette victoire nous a fait parvenir un document Matra technologie signé de ça main.

Jo bonnier was killed on a lola t620. You can see the fire (Ferrari of a privateer) on the road in the video. In 1973, a year after, Cevert was killed at Watkins Glenn

@@nanobastianelli Well, glad your father did this. This is a great upload. I much appreciate it. Graham Hill is the ONLY driver to ever win Monaco GP, World Driving Champion, Indianapolis 500, and the 24 Heures du Mans in his career. Mario Andretti was close. He and his son Michael were second, but never won. Fernando Alonzo is the only driver who could legitimately do it, if he drives at Indy again. Who knows? I would like to see it.
The era of mechanical fuel injection. I just LOVE IT! I'd like to see Mike Brady's Plymouth Satellite station wagon just TRY to catch that Matra!

A beautiful film for a great moment of a great era. All the champions are there, they bathed my childhood as well as the blue cars whose posters covered my room. It remains a great emotion today and a feat also because the means were ultimately low compared to those we see today on the circuits such as pit stops. I remember getting up at dawn on Sunday morning to turn on the television before breakfast to have a look back at the night. I remember these images with the headlights passing by, reflected by the soggy track. As well as the two Matras "waiting for each other" to cross the finish line together!

In ‘72 the rules changed for prototype engine sizes, this favoured Matra, Porsche fell victim to the changes after their stellar ‘71 season. Ferrari also dropped out of Le Mans having already won the WSC in the previous 8 rounds, and had ‘doubts’ about the durability of their superb Ferrari 312PB engine overs 24 hours. Ferrari would most lively have defeated the Matras otherwise, but they withdrew factory entrants in WSC from ‘73 to focus on Formula 1. In ‘72 Porsche only had a skeletal operation at Le Mans after the 917 was effectively banned but only in support of strong privateers (Joest) running legitimate but old 908s etc... Porsche also had other distractions like the Can-Am series.
It is the year when engines were downsized from 5L to 3L...
Great to see Graham completing his still unique 'Triple Crown' of The F1 Championship, Indy 500 and Le Mans. The crash was, I think, fatal for Jo Bonnier, Graham's long time close friend, more proof that nothing is ever truly perfect.
