2018 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder transmission removal and install to replace a leaking torque converter/oil pump seal without a lift. Pretty much any generation Camry will be a similar process.

Wow! For a solo performed and recorded transmission seal replacement (without a lift), this video is fantastic! Clearly this gentleman knows his business….and did both beautiful mechanical work and videography. Kudos!! Nice to know that Toyota had such well-trained technicians working for them. Dr. K.
Thanks man appreciate the feedback!
I do these at work with a 2 post lift. The fact that you did that all on the ground is unreal! I hope what you quoted for labor was well worth it, since it's extremely hard on your body replacing a transaxle on the ground.
i am a apprentice and i watch your videos all the time since i don’t really have time to learn at my dealership i come home and learn of you thank you so much
Damn! Much respect! No lift, and by yourself! 1st class job!
Been watching all of your videos lately & they’ve been 🔥 Keep the videos coming!
Thanks fam
Thank you so much for this Toyota Camry repair video.
That was quite a lot of work. Nice tutorial. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Great video, very detailed and the best one I've seen doing while leaving the motor in. Appreciate you posting this thank you.
Video was well descripted & perfect amount of information given so that I resolve the same issue on my aunts car
GOOD STUFF MAN!!
KEEP IT UP YO!!
Great video resolution. Great job. A lot of work
Keep it coming with videos
Great video, you covered all the bases and its crazy you did it at home !
a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do ! Thanks for watching!
A lot of trans are dropped in driveways using all kinds of crazy techniques! Lol
Great video . love your content . cant wait start training end of march
that isn’t easy to do and i give u major props brodie keep up the good work. i enjoy these walkthrough videos!
Great, how to video. It's a stark difference between a garage with a lift and working with floor jacks and stands. I applaude your effort in trying to show us all the details in your videos. I'm a diyr and today I dropped the trans on my 123k mile 2nd gen tacoma because of torque converter shudder. It took my brother and I two days. First time me doing any service to that transmission. Keep posting more videos. I know it's hard recording and then editing all to make it presentable.
Great video mate
Hats off for doing it on the floor.
I used to do that 30yrs ago but not now
Easier on a hoist
So glad to see a pro struggling the same way I did when I did my first FWD tranny on jackstands in my garage! Good video, thanks!
Thanks! Yea ive only dropped RWD trans on jackstands. FWD def is more work. but can be done!
you are such a good guy. great job😍
That garage is bangin! I need to clean and organize mine after watching that vid.
thanks man! love my garage still more to come!
Great vid.
I am parting out similar Mazda now. I got a 600 lb cart because I’m going to pull the whole cradle w/ the engine and trans together, in my driveway.
These vids are great thanks
If you have to drop more transmissions, consider the hb trans jack. I used that on my 240 clutch job and it made the job easier. The issue is that you have to jack up the car higher.
Great video very informative and great camera work.
That's crazy. I'm in Auto Trans class at TTEN and man uploads this vid.👍
haha nice! Citrus College by chance?
@@LetsDriftMedia Nah, another school.
My respects to you man!🤙🏻
Great video. Nice work !
I remember my younger days when working without a lift was a common trend. Those days are over for this kind of work, lol.
Good on you though, nice work!
I'm going to college to become a mecanic! Your videos are a aspiration. Hope to become half as good as you! Keep up the good content man!
Go to independent shop and start from the bottom up
Join the discord. Alot of helpful info for new techs.
Helped me a lot bro 😎
And here I thought we were having another day in the life of Toyota tech in the opening video 😂😂
Great job
Yessss, please more work to this car, need more knowledge on this car
Incredible!
Wow great job! I learned a ton from watching this.
Nice job!
People are acting like the transmission failed. It was a cheap little seal. Good Job none the less. I couldn’t do that on the floor with jack stands.
You can use a laser thermometer or scan tool to monitor the transmission temperature. I also use a magnetic level on the transmission pan and and jack up the rear so you it will drain correctly.
thanks man and yea I forgot to mention to have the vehicle level, again so used to doing this job on a lift.
I don’t even have a Camry and I still enjoyed this
Thanks man!
good you dont have one stay away sckotty kilmor said run
Big jobs like these are always great when your not on the clock. It's when I do my best work. You need to trench out your foundation and maybe blow out that ceiling to put an inground lift in. Life will be so much easier, especially if your going to continue to take on more home jobs. But on the ground electric HD motorcycle jacks come in handy for trans jobs (they have the perfect frame to secure entire trans and even engines under 600lbs)
Yea nice being able to take a break and walk into the kitchen for a snack whenever as well lol. I have 9ft ceilings in there and the big beam at the roof is a support beam for the 2nd story of the house so cant really do much about that. I am considering getting a bendpak half lift. basically a 2 post lift with half the height.
Great work Nick you make it look easy, I am a bit suspect of how easy the press was on that O.D .of the seal.
Yea was a little weird. Car hasn’t came back yet so assuming it’s fine lol
Love the epoxy flooring in your garage 👌
Stuff is holding up great and easy clean up!
@@LetsDriftMedia can't wait to do mine, thank you
@@cucolopez1942 reach me in the discord if you have questions when you get to doing it 👌
@@LetsDriftMedia it will be a minute I have a mess, but I Appreciate it homie thank you.
Great job brother nick
Thanks!
@@LetsDriftMedia Hyy brother nick you never replied to my message on the discord aap
@@carfreaks4793 the server is pretty active. @me next time so I can get back to you.
I love the confidence, keep up the good work. An also i can tell you miss some toyota action
Cool great job
dreading to fix my rear main seal on my older 2009 toyota highlander, but great job.
do you think you can remove the front sway bar with out lifting the engine like the manual suggests? thx
Damn son..... Enjoy being young, when you're able to do that work on the floor. If I did that, I wouldn't be able to walk for a week. Excellent video... Thank you
My hats off to you man, I don’t like doing side work especially if I don’t have a lift, I’ll admit I’m lazy and spoiled if I can’t do it at the shop I’m not doing it. My question is how is it not covered under powertrain. Technically that seal is considered internal lubricant an I can’t see that being considered a wearable item. Than again I’m a CDJR tech and warranty is a bit different for manufacturers.
Toyota didn’t want to cover it until they can confirm where the leak was coming from. So say the customer agreed and had Toyota do it. Had the seal not been covered. The dealer would then charge the customer for the labor of RR the trans.
It’s nick nakai !
Awesome video! Too bad you quit man, we need more pro toyota tech like you! I am worried about your nice looking flooring to take on this messy job....
Thanks. And when better opportunities present it self ya gotta go for it. So far no issues. I’ve left brake fluid, gear oil and ATF sitting in this floor for days without a stain it’s holding up great.
Wiggle it 😂. Good video man. 👍🏽
Didnt think a newer toyota would need this so soon.
Normally don't, it looked as though that seal wasn't fully seated from the factory. The job of putting that seal in on the assembly line is a boring, monotonous job. Maybe the person in that position just screwed up and didn't get it fully seated.
There are 11 BOLTS around the transmission bell housing not 10. Thanks for causing me to work extra hours to remove my transmission from the engine. And yes, I have the same set up as you do. Also, for your readers, there are 6 bolts holding the flex plate to the transmission. One of those bolts is darker to set the rest of the holes perfect for when you bolt them in on install.
Sorry if I mis spoke. But if it took you “hours” to figure out that there was an extra bolt holding the trans to the engine idk if you should be doing a job like this. Literally can look around and find what bolts hold the trans on in like 5 minutes…
What if you drop the converter bolts in the bell housing?
Hi what is the size of the Allen key used for draining the atf from the case? Forget to check the size before walking to the nearest oreilleys
I hope this is not a common issue for these Camrys 😬 Great job by the way 👍
Is it?
I heard harbor freight scissor lift will make subframe with powertrain removal easier
What the best Tim to service the transmission?and what all is done ?
When the transmission of the 2020 Toyota Camry breaks down, I wanted to know if the front tires were vibrating and how much it cost you to replace the transmission. Thank you very much.
Lol man this is so complicated but make it seem so easy!
It’s not that bad ! After you done a few there all not bad lol
My 2009 Toyota Camry transmission is going out. What should I be paying to replace transmission or any advise I need to be aware of . Thanks
I kinda hate torque converters lol. Last one I dealt with was on a nissan. Wasn't close enough to the flex plate so I couldn't thread in a bolt. Luckily, there was enough room to thread a longer bolt and yank the converter close enough to thread in the appropriate bolts.
BONEY!
@@LetsDriftMedia I almost never post in comments sections lol. I'm one of those people. Thanks for the video, really cool.
swear, I wish I was as good as a mechanic as you. I'm 20 years old and I'm going to start school in the fall to get an associates in auto tech, if all goes well 🤞
Go to school man . Forget what shade tree guys say . Even if you don’t complete it get a better understanding
Loos like some gravy :) doing one tomorrow
I do this onthe ground everyday gotten used to it I even have shortcuts to make life easy
First beer! 🍺
Great Vid bro!! Even tho your vid wasn't too technical the main tips you covered help us DYI mechanics. I did the same job on an old 2002 V6 Camry last summer no fun in the 120 weather🥵 wish I had a lift LOL. Suprised Toyota Warranty didn't cover it tho kinda odd, but hay more 💸 for you 👍🏼 OK never mind about warranty based on the comment I just read the car has over 90K miles on it so note to self always try to get a good deal on there extended warranty plans🤙🏼
Thanks man! Yea try to simplify most steps or else we’d be looking at a 1hr plus video. But 120 degree weather you are crazy man
@@LetsDriftMedia No worries. Your video came up and had to subscribe to the new channel. Yup I live near Palm Springs CA and the Summers here are brutal. I only have a Patio to work underneath of so the shade and a commercial fan help a bit. The heat feels the same after 110 you just get more soaked LOL the average is 117 or so. BTW I had to drop a few subframes last summer including a GMC Acadia not fun BTW whats that engine harnest model called? I use a cherry picker, but that's a pretty slick peace? Thanks
@@johnny4713ify thanks man and yea your right once it’s hot it’s hot and your just sweating anyways haha. I used to wrench in an uncovered driveway at my parents house having a garage to wrench in is a game changer. I got the engine support bar at Harbor freight like 80$
@@LetsDriftMedia Unfortunately no garage, but manage plus it keeps me thin LOL. Thanks for that info I didn't know they carried anything like that. Glad to see the new channel haven't been pulling up Impact wrench reviews since that's when I first saw your original channel LOL. Ended up getting a mix of Milwaukee and Ridgid top tier stuff. Anyhow appreciate your content 👍🏼
I have the same problem on my 2018 camry SE. transmission leak. Right where you said it.
What part number do i need to buy for fix the leak? im also getting quoted 1k for labor itself and any additional work
can you show where and how exactly you put the engine bar (support to hold up engine)
The car is already gone. But I unbolted the EGR cooler and threaded the 12mm bolts back thruough the chain into the holes the cooler was mounted to.
Not sure how the Toyota's are ,but I did a Nissan Altima transmission swap by pulling it through the top, factory procedure is similar to the carry by dropping subframe and trans from the bottom
Shotout. . Nice amazing sir..
If y’all ain’t in the discord, what y’all doing???????
What’s that?
i have camry 2018 2.5 like this one , i have problem , when i ride it a lot , transmission oil temperature heads up 150 digree, i change transmission cooler but dont change anithing , can you help me ? what can i do ?
I’m a Honda tech I Replaced an engine on my in-laws civic down in my hometown on jack stands. It wasn’t terrible getting everything undone but Never again haha if someone wants something that heavy done they can tow it up to my dealership and I’ll do it in a Saturday haha a job that’d usually take 3-6 hours took about a day and a half.
Yeah dude it's hard doing jobs on the floor when you're used to using a lift everyday lol
dam, and hell yea think this job took me about 9 or 10hrs at a casual pace, as compared to 4 or 5 hours at the dealer lol
Thank for this video.
Is that transmission has filter that we can replace it easily?
Does not have a replaceable filter
Good 👍
Am using Toyota 1998 sienna v6 engine but now I want to use four cylinder with my sienna transmission, so pls what Toyota four cylinder engine will march the sienna transmission.?
Nick, you're a badass doing a sub frame out tranny job on Jack stands. Hope you made some nice side job money on that one. Great job 👍
Was def worth the extra money but man did my back hurt the next day lol
@@LetsDriftMedia I hurt my lower back too for doing the side job few weeks ago. Then I still not getting better even though i visit physical therapy for many times. I hope you get better soon.
Where are you located have you ever rebuilt a fried transmission for 2018 Toyota le
J have toyota camry1992 2.2 automatic transmitions but it ride only in reverse. Is it possible to change automatic transmitions with manual from toyota celica corolla or carina or some other model of toyota because toyota camry in Europe is rare
Great video man should I keep an eye on this on my car it’s a 2019 with 35k
No it’s not a common problem. I’ve never seen one just leak out of no where.
2019 camry xle 4 cylinder has a reduce engine do you know what that means
What song you blasting in the back tho, it’s lit 🔥
haha not sure which song you are talking about since I was blasting all day.
Love this channel! Question: I’m replacing the short block on a 2012 Camry and wanna make sure I’m installing the balance shaft assembly correct. The repair manual says to put piston 1 at TDC and then rotate engine 90 degrees. Then line up the dots with the markings on the balance assembly and install. I’ve seen people put the dots opposite of the markings..which is the correct way? The manual read it as line up the dots with the markings..
Thanks man I would follow what ever the repair manual says especially when it comes to that balance shaft. I didnt do enough of those motors to remember off the top of my head. What repair manual are you using? If its a legit website for repair manuals like all data or pro demand its not going to give you false information.
@@LetsDriftMedia thanks for replying! It’s a Haynes repair manual. Not the best but I don’t do enough of these repairs to pay for a good one.
@@LetsDriftMedia thanks for replying! It’s a Haynes repair manual. Not the best but I don’t do enough of these repairs to pay for a good one.
@@The.Car.Guru. no problem should be good just make sure the marks are still aligned after you install it, sometimes it moves a little when it mates with the crankshaft.
@@LetsDriftMedia thanks a million brotha you rock!
Nice tool cabinet setup at the background. How many hours to do this work . Thx
thanks, its a 15hr job. I got it done in about 10hrs
Haha never got a chance to take home one of my uniform when I quit Nissan. I did a lot of CVT transmission at nissan..
Did it fix it?
I hope you put sealant around it just in case
Would a 2016 corolla with a cvt trans be different? Fantastic video!!
Not really. All FWD Toyotas are pretty similar.
Have you considered quick jacks or a max jack lift for your garage ?
thought about quick jacks but dont think its worth the price 2ft of lift lol.
how many hour do u charge to take off transmission and put it on? camry i4
Good shit bro made that look easy!
How big is your garage bro I might be buying a house soon with “2 car” garage definitely trying do some big work in there lol
Just a standard 2 car garage. I wanted a deep garage or at least a 3 car when we got the place but honestly is plenty of room as long as you are organized. I could pull a motor in there no problem
@@LetsDriftMedia nice! do you know if it’s 19x19 that’s how big mine would be
You ever think of getting a quick Jack?
When replacing the transmission on a 2018 Camry. Does the car require any type of “relearn” or reset to the shift logic on the transmission ?
Yes a relearn for the trans ecu is required when installing a new trans, or torque converter, but if you skip that step it wont be the end of the world. Ive seen it plenty of times when I worked in the dealer.
A GoPro with a head strap mount is the best way to record wrenching work.
This video is awesome . How much did you pay for that engine support bar at Harbor Freight?
Like 80$ awesome price and tool to have
This is going to be me soon, except my RMS is leaking on a '14 Camry. May change the Trans seal also while I'm in there. Toyota supposedly changed the TC 50k miles ago.
Good luck hope this video will be helpful when you tackle that job.
Was there any ECU programming or reflags type work that needed to be done?
I just did a reset on the transmission ECU learned values then went for a test drive. I’ve seen people skip that step at the dealer before but never saw anything happen because of it.
I just bought a 94 lexus es300, california car, 45000 miles! Made in Japan, anything i should look out for? It thru a tranny solenoid code and an igniter code but i think my garage forgot to tighten the neg battery cable after replacing the timimg belt, fingers crossed code dont come back, where are u located, i am in NC, no doubt u could fix anything on my old Lexus
man i want to be a mechanic bad !!.. how did you learn your skill ? ive been watching lots of videos on youtube and learning alot about fixing cars but i need more hands on training where do you suggest i start?
