Sinix, I used to use a similar method for background removal, but then found something that works a lot better. It's stupid simple: take a photo of your drawing, then turn the page over and take a photo of a blank page. The two will have the exact same lighting, so what you can do is blur the blank page to remove paper texture, invert it, and add it to your drawing. This will make the background evenly white without losing any details.
Yeah, I actually remember a traditional painter who did a similar approach to capture his traditional paintings. Taking a photo of his painting on the wall, then taking a picture of the same spot without the painting and using inversion. It might have been slightly different, I don't remember exactly. Photographing paintings makes everything harder.
Seriously thankful. I'm not sure people realize what a gift this video is, 9 and a half minutes long of straight up gold, saving a lot of time for a newbie like myself googling, running into dead-ends, and generally wasting time trouble shooting image adjustments. This video is also incredible for someone who wants to upload their traditional portfolio but doesn't have a white backdrop with white lighting to color correct. Thanks again Sinix, this was great.
But really helpful video!! It's easy to settle with the best quality pic you can get on your phone (esp. if your tired or don't have easy access to editing software) but it's nice to put in the extra steps to present your work in the best way possible.
I caught myself saying ''damn that is so cool''. I never thought of doing this before. This is awesome Sinix, I just thought about some awesome things to make!
Omg, thank you so much for this video, seriously you made my day!! I can finally do great compositions and use my sketches for instagram without look like shiii
hey! I don't know if you read all comments but I practiced the faces in different angles with your video and what I really can't get right is the neck! It would be a huuuuge help if you could do an episode on neck. also thank you for all you share with us, it is so useful!
just a tips if you want to put traditionally looking letters in your sketches i have a hand written signature that i use as watermark and just set it to darken or multiply
i just wanted to say that if you're too lazy to go on your computer or if you don't have photoshop, you should try the app Polarr!! it has the gradient option and great lighting features, it's obviously not as good as photoshop, but yeah
hey Sinix! could you please do a video about drawing from imagination? and any excercises you might suggest to help with that! I love your videos thank you so much!
Thank you for the valuable information! I'm bookmarking this for sure. Now I just need to figure out how to translate that into Affinity Photo speak since I can't afford Photoshop!
I had a different purpose for my own methods which was to use real media for the line art of digital piece. Those methods could take hours, kinda ridiculous. I did find out however that brighter paper backed with other sheets of paper would improve the initial contrast quality of the scanned images.
Still almost everybody has a smartphone, so everybody can take pictures. Also everybody has some kind of lamp, which should be already enough to make sketches more presentable
You can get Photoshop Express for free on your phone. With that, you can manually adjust exposure, saturation, contrast, cropping, darks, lights, etc. You can't erase stuff, or do the gradient mask technique, but if you play around with the tools, you can get something fairly pleasing. Especially for sketches. Finished illustrations, however, should always look very presentable no matter what platform.
Gimp and Krita are free. They are everything you need. For quick mask in Krita (there's nothing called like that, but it's still a mask, I think): krita.org/en/item/how-to-select-areas-with-the-paintbrush-in-krita-2-9/ You can use gradient instead of brush, of course.
Nice excuse but you can always pirate one. I mean it is definitely ok to pirate if youre a learner and do not make money out of it, I guess on the ethical part you are good to go. Pirating is not the best solution but it is the only soloution if you want to improve learn some programs and find a job, in which you WILL buy the program :)
Any free more pro than MS Paint programs has layers, layer modes and gradients, and curves and everything you need (I think 'quick mask' can be absent for example in Krita, but in Krita there are "selection masks" and it works the same, I think. Here is a tutorial: krita.org/en/item/how-to-select-areas-with-the-paintbrush-in-krita-2-9/ You can use gradient instead of brush; it is just another layer, but in greyscale). Gimp, and Krita has curves, even FireAlpaca has primitive ones. So, you have no excuses, sorry.
I came here to learn but first thing popping up in my mind when he goes to open his sketchbook ...."is that a wedding ring, aww he must be already married :-( " Haha. Don't blame me ^^
Also Gimp and Krita has eveything you need to do as he said. For painting I don't recommend Gimp, though, only Krita, but Gimp is a little better to edit a photo.
Yeah, it could look a little complex for first use. But you can get used to it after a while. What brings you the most trouble? (Tip: don't use all that fancy brushes, just choose all you need (circle and textured, I think) and tag them "Favourite Presets" and in "Brush Presets" change from "All" to tag "Favourite Presets")
Also they are sketches, you shouldnt worry about composition and all this other shit like seriously. It doesnt really matter, like i said, they are damn sketches, draw, take a quick pic, then post you dont even need your computer
Christian Köhn NO I WILL NOT CALM DOWN. for real though i just want to see more drawings from sinix and i think he should go for quantity over quality because hes such a good artist.
I kindof agree, but its the artists choice, it does look nice on sinixs instagram, i never realized he cut it all up and organized it. Honestly im a little dissapointed he didnt actually draw his sketchbook pages so perfectly packed. Also i dont mind pictures of sketchbooks that include evidence of being in a sketchbook. But it this is at least good for when you just cant get a nice photo without a shadow.
I always wondered how everyone had such clean sketches while mine always looked like they were taken by a potato. You rock dude!

Seriously thankful. I love that sinix is uploading more, but I miss his streams. they were pretty great, but I can understand if he wants to stop.
hey! I don't know if you read all comments but I practiced the faces in different angles with your video and what I really can't get right is the neck! It would be a huuuuge help if you could do an episode on neck. also thank you for all you share with us, it is so useful!

You can select your sketch by selection>color range and take the shadows. You get selection only on the your black lines. Sorry for bad english..
Sir , could you pls share your brush u use in lining
this video saved my life
I love the video, but why is all of it flickering, say, between 1:35 and 2:55? Problems with your Photoshop or with the program you use to record?
hey Sinix! could you please do a video about drawing from imagination? and any excercises you might suggest to help with that! I love your videos thank you so much!
WOW. Learnt a lot from your video. Thanks!
Great video. The photoshop glitching at 1:45 was a tiny bit distracting though.
Sorry about that, I think the video speed messed up and caused that.
it was, as usually, an education, thank you!
i only have ms paint on windows 98
Thanks, can we have vid. For cleaning up in digital drawing?
Can I do this on procreate? Does it have the tools necessary?
Which software
is there a way to do this on Procreate?
Thank you for the valuable information! I'm bookmarking this for sure. Now I just need to figure out how to translate that into Affinity Photo speak since I can't afford Photoshop!

Can you use this method in color too??
This is really helpful, thank you!

I had a different purpose for my own methods which was to use real media for the line art of digital piece. Those methods could take hours, kinda ridiculous. I did find out however that brighter paper backed with other sheets of paper would improve the initial contrast quality of the scanned images.
I never tought about this. Thx

👏👏👏really impressive.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the tips.
that was amazing thank you!
A lot of people sharing photos of their sketchbooks don't have photoshop or other digital editing software...
Still almost everybody has a smartphone, so everybody can take pictures. Also everybody has some kind of lamp, which should be already enough to make sketches more presentable

Krita is amazing and free! It is what I use.
These tips are amazing (:
Magical!
thx man ^3 super nice video ^3
I think in this case, maybe a non-destructive leveling would be better.
you're living in 2017 while i'm just realizing i'm in 2000
amazing
hey sinix!
What pen do you use for your sketching?
ILY THANKS
Thank you!!
im so lazy that im contemplating on buying a 1k HD 1080p HQ can digital camera
Excuse #1: I can't afford photoshop.
You can do most of these things on any art program.
As for things like layer mask, if you really wanted to use that method, I'm sure GIMP has that
Nice excuse but you can always pirate one. I mean it is definitely ok to pirate if youre a learner and do not make money out of it, I guess on the ethical part you are good to go.

Mitro Pan
Did you just say Pirating is okay?
I'm not scolding you or anything. It was just hilarious to me if taken out of context.
Who actually buys photoshop?
God, someone just sketched all of my excuses away.
Incrivel!
or just scan it, makes the background white
1er like j'aime beaucoup tes vidéos
bandwidthzero pourquoi?

Make your stuff presentable! *proceeds to use a crappy smartphone for video*
So many tangents ;)
I feel called out and personally attacked.
I'm suing for emotional damage and trauma. You'll be hearing from my lawyer within 3 weeks.
Dont have photoshop
The fact that he has 666k subscribers😮
Woahh he sounds like Jeremy Schaeferr
Any tips for mobile, guys? Can't afford a computer yet. And I don't want crappy Instagram art. Or else Sinix'll screm at me for poopoo posts.
The art version of girls putting hella filters on their pics.

Low key wanna fight him now.
Papa bless
Personally I like it raw
4:00 am i the only one seeing a face?
I came here to learn but first thing popping up in my mind when he goes to open his sketchbook ...."is that a wedding ring, aww he must be already married :-( " Haha.
Don't blame me ^^
what if you are a poor ass student who can't afford photoshop?
Anna Leopardi Try Clip Studio Paint (Manga Studio). It's an excellent program that's cheaper than PS and has tons of great features.
Also Gimp and Krita has eveything you need to do as he said. For painting I don't recommend Gimp, though, only Krita, but Gimp is a little better to edit a photo.
thanks, I got krita a few days ago but I have no idea how it works actually

Just post ya damn sketches, people just like seeing good art, it doesnt have to look like its freaking digital
Also they are sketches, you shouldnt worry about composition and all this other shit like seriously. It doesnt really matter, like i said, they are damn sketches, draw, take a quick pic, then post you dont even need your computer
christ, calm down, it's just a helpful video :D
nice druggy music playlist btw ;)
Christian Köhn NO I WILL NOT CALM DOWN. for real though i just want to see more drawings from sinix and i think he should go for quantity over quality because hes such a good artist.
